Think Rafa's hair transplant has done him some good. Was walloping Berdych off the court in first set. Second set closer.

Very vain of Rafa really - the hair transplant, I mean. But it was obviously causing him psychological trauma ;)

Alis
29-12-2016, 17:08
Berdy just doesn't have the game to counteract an in-form Rafa - Goran looked distinctly disenchanted! A Rafa v Andy final would be much more interesting.

Andy plays Goffin at 13.00 on Friday.

I know, I know, but he has to set out his stall for 2017. We don't want any young upstarts getting ideas. Plus wuzzdom is an ongoing condition:-)

5-4 - c'mon Andy a nice little break now would go down a treat.

Certainly tougher than I was expecting but entertaining tennis and Goffin impressing, however sure Andy can step up-come on!

Goffin wins the first set 7 - 6 (7 - 4).

Hello everybody. Forgot it started at 1:00. Andy OK - lost first set because...?

Alis
30-12-2016, 14:07
Goffin's playing at an incredibly high standard - is he going to be able to keep it up I wonder?

rimarli
30-12-2016, 14:09
Goffin seems to be on a mission. After the abysmal match in London

Alis
30-12-2016, 14:12
Wow - what a rally. It doesn't look as though Goffin's going off the boil.

Alis
30-12-2016, 14:18
The first chink in Goffin's armour - put the foot down now Andy.

Stell

Alis
30-12-2016, 14:39
Goffin gets the break back - just break again Andy.

david1610
30-12-2016, 14:40
Mmm... 5-4 Goffin.
Andy needs to (i) stay focused and (ii) try and step it up a bit more for the next ten minutes just to show his class. C'mon Andy!

JAMES4578
30-12-2016, 14:41
Andy seemed to be gaining the upper hand but a few missteps coupled with Goffin's resistance puts Murray under bit pf pressure again at 4-5, come on!

Jane
30-12-2016, 14:46

The dreaded 40-0 on serve.... sometimes Andy goes off the boil...

Teresa
30-12-2016, 14:47
Is that it - just the one match?

david1610
30-12-2016, 14:48
Is that it - just the one match?
No, he plays a 3rd v 4th place match.

30-12-2016, 14:48
Oh well. Off to get ready to go to hospital.

Stell
30-12-2016, 14:49
Andy certainly did not play like he's the world number one, today.

Alis
30-12-2016, 14:49
Whoops! Goffin played brilliantly - Andy not quite at the top of his game. I'm sure he would rather that he had won but he didn't seem to be too bothered about it.

Teresa
30-12-2016, 14:50
Goffin had already played a match, and it showed.

rimarli
30-12-2016, 14:52
He has lost here before and it made no difference to the rest of the tour tournament. I think he uses these exhos for practice. He lost to legions last year but beat him easily when it really mattered. Disappointing all the same. And as has been said Coffin has already played a match. Andy did say he has never been so tired at the end of year as he was this year. Perhaps he should have gone straight to Doha where he would meet an easier opponent

JAMES4578
30-12-2016, 14:53
Disappointing how that set turned but in the scheme of things unlikely to be that significant and they are only exhibitions,Andy wasn't at best but never seen Goffin in quite this vein against Murray and he had match in hand. Andy will still play the 3rd place play off against either Raonic or Nadal but this at least wasn't scheduled to be televised.

rimarli
30-12-2016, 14:57
Sorry I keep putting Krygios and it keeps changingit

Alis
30-12-2016, 14:59
I hope they do televise it - they televised the 6/7 play off today although it wasn't originally listed. Didn't Andy say that this was a good opportunity to try out new things? Maybe that's what he was doing.

rimarli
30-12-2016, 15:03
He has said that he uses the Holman cup to try out new things

lovetennis
30-12-2016, 15:32
High quality match from both, sorry Andy did not hold onto the break in the second set as that would have put a different slant on the match. Still a good workout and don't see it having much significance in the big scheme of things

Nessie
30-12-2016, 15:36
Does that halt his winning streak or do they not count exhibition matches?

Teresa
30-12-2016, 15:41
It's interesting that Raonic who is also playing his first match, is being slaughtered by Nadal who has already played a match 6:1 to Nadal.

Jane
30-12-2016, 15:44
Eurosport are scheduled to show live tennis at 9.am tomorrow, with the final scheduled at 11.00 am, so it looks like Andy will be on at 9.00 am - probably against Raonic, who has just lost the first set against Nadal 1-6

harriet
30-12-2016, 15:59
expect Andy will play Raonic, again, and the final will be between Nadal and Goffin

Nessie
30-12-2016, 16:09
Don't count your chickens yet!, Roanic is coming back.

harriet
30-12-2016, 16:15
raonic has just won a set, so all outcomes up in the air

JAMES4578
30-12-2016, 17:07
It did become interesting but Nadal still too strong in the end and early break in 3rd was significant, so Andy plays Milos at 9am Uk time and it will be on Eurosport2.

Caro
30-12-2016, 17:07
Just home in time to see Rafa beat Milos. I'm happy to see him back playing good tennis. I was at work earlier so didn't see any of Andy v Goff so just watching a bit of it now. I'm not disappointed, not really bothered about exhos and from what I've seen so far of the match, Goff played an absolute blinder so fair play to him.

RosieBear
30-12-2016, 17:32
I'm not bothered by the loss either. Sure a W would have been preferable, but what a tough first match back for Andy after weeks off the court - how many second serve returns did Andy miss? That's his bread and butter. Just hasn't found his range yet, which is entirely understandable. Goff looked great - he has always been nimble, athletic and talented, but today his game looked significantly more muscular and aggressive - a supercharged version of his game. Good for him - he's a fantastic player and it's great to see him develop - he's also done away with the floppy, boyish locks so I get the feeling he really wants to show he means business this year. But I'm not in least concerned for Andy - as good as Goff is, on any other day Andy would have (and will) win.

david1610
30-12-2016, 18:14
I also feel that Andy won a lot of matches at the end of the year where the desire to win and get to number 1 meant as much as his actual tennis. Clearly, that feeling cannot be sustained in an exhibition! PS Next week will be interesting and I also think nobody will want to play Rafa (currently ranked 9) in the last 16 of the AO!

Have been out all afternoon so didn't see any of it. I know it's only an exho but I'm a little surprised at the result.

Seen bits & pieces on phone through my lunch break...not in the least bothered about result either. Will watch tomorrow though as ive missed seeing Andy play, would have rathered it was someone other than milos again tho. I still have nightmares about that o2 semi final :hide::eek:

Bardot

I thought it was a good match and Goffin played very well with just a few points which made the difference like at 4-4 in the first set TB, Andy netted a fairly straight forward FH on his serve. I might be wrong but I did get the impression Andy wasn't chasing down some balls he would have otherwise in a more meaningful match. Goffin has been in Dubai/Abu Dhabi for 2 weeks and maybe more used to the conditions which did look humid especially in the first set.

When Andy was 4-2 up in the second set, Goffin was 12/1 to win the set, if only Andy had let us know what he was planning. ;) Wawrinka finished last here 3 years ago and three weeks later won the Australian Open.

Play has just started - Andy serving - 30 - 30

suttontennis
31-12-2016, 09:25
Pre-season, there is always a big difference between the first match you play, and subsequent matches. Fitness and match sharpness are so different, Goffin had the one match already in the tank and I think that was the only difference between the two. Plus, Andy's got a bigger target on his back now that he's no.1

Good final and Nadal was the stronger as expected, however pity Goffin couldn't make more of the chances.
