Didn't take long in 2017 for an extended match before Andy... Jo-Wilf easily won the first set 6-1 against Kuznetsov but the latter has just won the second 6-4 so on to a third set.
Trivia fact: Stepanek's doubles ranking (according to protennis live) and age are the same: 38!
All the best of luck, Andy

Just gives me time to clear out my car in daylight ... thanks JWT.
:no worries:
Just home - assumed I'd missed this!
Andy wins the toss and elects to serve.

And we're off for 2017! Andy wins to 30 for a 1-0 lead. A successful challenge at 15-30 was crucial.

quick as a flash it's 3-0. Nice play from Andy.
Watching - well I say watching.........
There's some white in Jezza's beard & he's only 29, the stress of playing Andy. ;) 4-0
What a difference in serving from yesterday. 5-0
First set to Andy - 6-0

There we are! 6-0. Not a bad start to the year......
I'm sure I saw 18/1 for Andy bagelling Chardy (he was 500/1). 6-0

Remember Roddick's comment at Queens one year when (our) Andy was demolishing him? "Keep it social." That popped in to my head... ;)
After about 20 minutes, Andy wins the first set 6 - 0. He's playing much better than he did against Goffin.

Andy hitting the heights with the bagel-great stuff. Chardy not really got going though, needs to not give him any hope!

I remember that. It when I first started following him. I think Roddicks comment was "play nicely".

Oops, Andy drops serve at the start of the second....
not really a surprise after winning first set with a bagel lol

I only remember Roddick saying "keep it social" ... and then (after a few points won by Muzz) saying "that's not social"!.
;)
Chardy gifts the break with a DF. 1-1

I defer to your wider knowledge. I might have a look later. I think I bought the DVD of that match, along with his brutal dismantling of Raonic on this way to the US Open title.

A bit more of a competitive set, now 3-2 to Andy.
Pointing to his box with his racquet after losing a point is something new for 2017. ;)
3 huge serves from BP down from Chardy. 4-4
Great serving from 0-15. 5-4
break round about now would be nice
Chardy finding his first serve when needed. 5-5

Andy clutching his groin area after that last point.

Second serve ace sets up 4 mps for Andy.... One is enough, and it's all over!
Get in Champ!
Bit of a test in second, but solid play overall!!!

Well done Andy. Always good to win the first match of the year, no matter how good the previous year was. In the end, a useful workout!

Certainly a tale of contrasting sets, a challenge in the 2nd but Andy stepped up when it counted and a good performance in first competitive singles this season! Great stuff Muzzah and a lot more excitement to come!:clap::clap:

Bravo Andy - looking good  And nice little post match interview with an unusually good interviewer (pleasant, sensible questions). Yes indeed Andy, you did what true champions do and used tough losses to become stronger and a true, undisputed no 1

Ever criticism of Simon Reed's commentary at the Olympics still applies. :p He seems obsessed by Andy's performance at Abu Dhabi.
Good match to start the year. Motorsports commas did acknowledge that Abu Dhabi was only an exho and so called this as his 25th win in a row

Having beaten the world #69 today Andy plays the #68 in the next round. The #67 is not playing Doha. ;)
I think Frew McMillan? is very jealous of Sir A. He has sounded very sarcastic in his use of the title.
Well done Andy! Onwards and onwards!! Haha. You're at the pinnacle.

Glad to hear Andy won. Off to find highlights on Eurosportplayer after having to return to reality today (aka work!)
Sir A is currently 187 in the Race to London - one slot above Alijaz Bedene. Mr Djokovic is about 50 places higher for some reason,
How so? Surely there can't be a 'Race' until the first tournaments of the year are over.

Agree Bardot - I must have dreamt that Andy beat Raonic there cos it never gets a mention. Reed is not the only commie who just refers to the loss to Daveed G.

I don't know - it just amused me for some reason. L Vanni is currently leading the race.
Where did you see it, Teresa? There doesn't seem to be anything on the ATP site.

Vanni probably got his points in challengers after the tour finals ended- - bit like Andy having DC points at start of 2016. Think Novak ahead if Andy purely on alphabetical order. My theories anyway.
Thanks for all today's match comments everyone. Was travelling today but managed to watch the 2nd set of Andy's match in a coffee shop in Cambridge. I liked very much what I saw! Thought Andy did a good job. There was never any doubt he would win but Chardy did very well to bring 2nd set to a TB. No way was Chardy ever going to break Andy's serve (after the 1st game of the 2nd set). In Bury St Edmunds now and here for rest of the week. Hoping to be able to watch Andy tomorrow but I always have here to fall back on!
