View Full Version : DOHA 2017 R2: Tuna Melzer for tea anyone? Andy thought so: 7-6 7-5
Andy is 3rd on, play starting at 12.30 midday. So approximately 3.30-4.30 pm start UK time.
The Very Best of Luck Andy!!!:thumbup:
Very best of luck Andy. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
Not played each other. G Melzer's normal home is the futures circuit, when he has won quite a few titles - mainly on clay. Famous last words, but this one shouldn't be that stressful.
All the very best of luck, Andy
Melzer is at a career high of 68 with nearly all his points gained at challenger level, winning 4 tournaments last year and in the final of two others although he did reach the SF of Kitzbuhel. At age 26 he's played only 1 slam main draw, the French Open last year where he was beaten in the first round by Bedene. Definitely in the nothing to lose camp but then so was Jozef Kovalik ranked #117 who has just beaten top seed Cilic in Chennai. ;)
Djokovic has just won, so Andy out soon.
Just in time for me heading home from the dreaded first day back...
Almagro awaits the winner of this match in the QF having beaten Kohlschrieber(7) 7-6(5) 7-6(6).
3 break points to Melzer - gulp.
Anyone on Livestream? Happy New Year to you all btw!

Ha ha! Too true, but commentary not bad and reasonably minimal.
Melzer still on all out attack. 4-3

Melzer an impressive 80% first serves but he has been broken twice. 4-4

Andy holds to 15 for 6-5. Let's do it this time please!
Melzer has won only 1 point out of 8 second serves so it would be nice if we could see more of them.
another two set point
cmonnnn
one set point left
cmonnnnnn
Make that 2 points on his second serve. 30-40
You have to give credit to Melzer - he's playing a blinder. That was a fantastic point he played to win that game.
Unbelievable, he hath no fear. 6-6
Unbelievable, he hath no fear. 6-6
........... but no-one expects him to win so he has nothing to lose. C'mon, Andy - show him who's boss!
Haven't read previous comments so apologies if repeating but Melzer is positively Rafa like. Which underscores everything the commies have said about how slow the balls and courts are these days. Melzer has little experience of hard courts!

78 min set v Melzer, never would have predicted that but he got over the line, now for a straightforward second set .......Please Sir
I hadn't realised that Melzer is 26 - I thought he was much younger.
That the key point isn't it though, Melzer played way above his grade, but still lost the set, it's what sets the like of Sir, Feddykins and That other player apart.

Melzer's first serve percentage dropped considerably but still holds, saves BP. 2-3
you just know andy will spend changeover gripping about over rules from umpire
Looked as if Jamie D said the ball was out that Andy challenged successfully. I'm sure Andy won't remind him of it later. ;)

Melzer saving BPs, SPs, MPs for fun, crazy stuff. 5-4

04-01-2017, 18:30
Fair play to the Austrian. Makes Andy serve it out after saving two MPs.
Well, I'd take my hat off to Gerry if I was wearing one.
Melzer on fire and Andy lacklustre. Not really seeming to be attempting much shot making. Apart from the odd passing shot it's back and forth. When Melzer gets a short ball he's using the angles.
Melzer's launching himself at every ball and it worked. 5-5
Having never played him, I think Andy has perhaps had a struggle sussing Melzer's game.
always happens whem I'm waiting to cook dinner, and I'm starving
Just break again and then close, Andy!

Imagining the icy Lendl stare, if he was there.

Well done, Andy, now serve it out pleeeeease!!!!
Can he serve it out this time? This is reminding me of a match last year against Raonic (I think), when neither of them seemed to want to win.......

What an amazing battle hats off to both players. Amazing performance from Melzer.
Andy to Melzer at the net "you're going to get up there I swear".

Total points, 97-84 - seemed closer than that. Melzers' tactics were to just hit the ball as hard as possible and it brought him some success. Andy knows how to keep patient and win these type of games though. Well played!
:dance::dance::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::dance:: dance::dance: Well done, Andy and well done Gerald Melzer. I'm glad Andy gave him words of encouragement at the net - he certainly deserved them.

Whoohoo well done Andy :clap::clap: Gez is another one we'll let be in the other half in Aus (along with young Goffin) :)
well least andy was happy with his level of play even if others weren't ;)
I know he admitted he wanted the matches, whilst Jamie and Bruno were interviewing him, and he certainly got one.
One way of looking at it is.............Good Preparation for Australian Open........hopefully!!!:skippy:
Whoohoo well done Andy :clap::clap: Gez is another one we'll let be in the other half in Aus (along with young Goffin) :)
I think he will be fine against Goffin, and he will have worked Melzer out next time they meet. A tough match and Melzer Jn played out of his skin, but still lost in straights.

If Goff plays like he did today, he's welcome to join Andy at any stage. ;) Apparently young David has caught flu and had difficulty breathing.

Agreed - was only kidding really - I never fret any draw - after all Andy's no 1 for a reason, people need to fear him not the other way round :)
Well if Andy was looking for a workout he certainly got it from Gerald! What a good attitude he had, as well as some amazingly powerful shots. Here's hoping he hasn't given Almagro grounds for optimism tomorrow. ;)
:bravo::knight::thumbup:tomorrow:boogie::clap::cla p:
Had to miss the last few points - meal couldn't wait any longer as I have a meeting shortly.
Well done Andy!
And well played Gerald!

Caught most of the second set when I came in from work. Never seen Gerald play before and was pretty impressed with him, as was Andy if the exchange at the net at the end is anything to go by. Two tough sets but as is the way these days, Andy gets the job done :bravo:
I really enjoyed that match today. I love watching Andy overcoming difficult opponents who refuse to go away (and well played too Gerald). Whilst watching today, like y'day, I always felt there was no way Andy would lose the match even though he prolonged it at times!! Love it!
