Seems reasonable draw for Jo though Cibulkova potentially tricky and tough having Serena in her quarter (though depends on the American's form if both progress) Quite a tough one for Heather against Stosur though Australian doesn't have great record at home, challenge for Naomi.
I thought Hev had drawn Sam Stosur....

Good match between Bencic and Williams, would love to see Bencic win
and now she will have to do it the hard way 1st set Williams 6-4
Williams now 5 - 0 up in the second and it's all one way traffic.
.......... but Serena fails to serve it out and it's now 5-3. C'mon Belinda - it would be great if she could take it to three.
Serena takes it 6-4, 6-3.

Delighted to see our women through - particularly Heather W. Can Naomi Broady join them in R2?

wow went to bed at the start of Heathers match and just WOW
Niami Broady 4-3 up in first set and on Eurosport 1 now.
Naomi won first set but lost 2nd. Still on Eurosport 1 on serve 3-2 Gavrilova in the 3rd. Come on Naomi!
Naomi is giving Gavrilova a match, now 3 - 3 in the third set.
Watched Naomi's match. Very close. A pity she couldn't hang on in her last service game. Her serving was generally very good...lots of aces.
Aggie has just lost to Lucic-Baroni.

Sharp intake of breath! ANOTHER shock!!
Crikey - didn't see that one coming either! I'm really sorry to see Aga go - she is so good to watch. I would love her to win a Major before she hangs up her racquets.

Certainly surprising not only that Aga is out but was beaten so convincingly, disappointing. Whilst would also love to see Aga won a major as has attractive game think chances declining now.

5th seed Karolina Pliskova had a scare, 5-2 down in 3rd to Ostapenko but comes through 10-8 in 3rd, Daria Gavrilova put out higher seed Timea Bacsinszky 6-4 in 3rd,so another good run for her and they will play each other in last 16.

World#1 and top seed, Angelique Kerber, out of the AO losing 2-6, 3-6 to American Coco Vanderweghe.

Big win for Coco and Kerber struggled somewhat with the attacking game. Whilst disappointed thought it would be challenging for Angie to retain title.
The number ones in both the men's and and women's draw have gone out today. Who'd have thought it?

So Andy not the only No. 1 seed to go out today
Indeed - who'd have thought?
Well, another unexpected result - Lucic-Baroni puts out Pliskova. Let's hope for the unexpected in the next quarter!
Serena vs Venus final - completely surreal.

Would've have predicted it at the start of the tournament but was pretty sure they'd both win semis,Venus had more of a match though. First meeting in Slam final since Wimbledon 2009 and whilst great story for family have to say not match up I would most look forward to. Many others favoured to possibly make latter stages fell by the wayside.

Yes when they play each other you are never sure whether or not the result is decided beforehand.

Some have that suspicion, though really don't think that's the case. Just think it's difficult to have the same intensity and their games are similar. Since that Wimbledon final which Serena won, she's also taken 5 of the last 6 matches and must be favoured.
i think they genuinely hate playing each other.

Well, when it got to the semis was expecting it, couldn't imagine it at the start ! A win for Serena would take her back to #1, whilst a win for Venus would take her to #8 and knock Jo out of the top ten. I find it hard to cheer for either of them, will probably give it a miss.

There are not many tennis matches I would miss, but this is definitely one of them.
Can't see Venus holding a candle to Serena these days. It will also depend on her health on the day.
Vandeweghe once tweeted "I'm not a Murray fan". In unrelated news, thank you Venus for taking out the trash. ;)
Im glad Venus took her out , find her really arrogant !!

Me too.
Have to confess I'm not really bothered about this final.
On balance I think I'd quite like Venus to win, but I'm not sure I'll be watching.
I think the result is a foregone conclusion.
Venus leads 3 - 2 - Serena about to serve. Go Venus:thumbup:

Whilst would've preferred Venus to win didn't think she had much chance, so Serena takes 23rd slam and passes Graf-whilst not biggest fan great record. Margaret Court still ahead at 24 though these were not all in Open era.
Playing as she is, Serena will pass Margaret Court's record - of that I have no doubt.
There should be a huge asterisk against Margaret Court's 24 grand slams especially the early Australian Opens when there were only 32 player draws and very few other top players competed. She would win by beating only fellow Australians. However her 13 titles in the open era are definitely legitimate.

Serena is an amazing athlete- and to compete against her sister for the final at the ages they are is quite superb.
We should celebrate and acknowledge the Williams sisters, and their achievements especially given the background they had. And their great female power - strong women at the top of the game - something that people find threatening sometimes!
Serena is the greatest ever female tennis player in my opinion.
And she's got more to come!

Whilst I recognise both Serena's and Venus'achievements (the more remarkable considering background)and longevity in the game (despite a few illnesses/injury) at times they have been controversial. Have to say I'm not the biggest fan of Serena's game style even if effective and her personality not always appealed ,though think she's mellowed a bit in recent years. I know many may think she's the best ever but I'd argue it's not that clear cut and stats don't always tell the whole story. She's not really had a consistent rival other than Venus earlier on and maybe Justine Henin for a time. I think some other champions had more competition.
Didnt watch it , but not surprised at all .
She is a great athlete for sure , but agree with James .

As with Fed - I think it's so difficult to say that anyone is the greatest of all time. So many other elements come into play, not least the standard of the competition. Whether you like her or not though, without doubt Serena has been the outstanding female player of this century.
