Sir Andrew of the Murrays kicks off his Ozzie Open campaign with a R1 match against Ukrainian Ilya Marchenko, world ranked #95.

They've only met once before, at the Ozzie Open in the R64, with a 3 sets 6'1, 6'3, 6'3 victory for Muzz. More of the same would be nice Sir!

It'll be an early start for mad AMFF'ers. The match is due 3rd on Rod Laver Arena after 2 WTA matches starting 11am in Oz; so 3/4/5pm over there is any time 2-4pm over here!!!

NB, post drafted with lots of blanks before I went to bed Thursday night - hence the dodgy time!

Marchenko did get to practice on RLA today as Lesia Tsurenko picked him as a hitting partner. In the same vein, Nolefam are furious with Andy for having Verdasco as a hitting partner and giving him RLA court time. :big grin:

Out of respect for my fellow road users and long suffering pupils I won't be up for this. Though as I've heard they are planning honouring Andy on his no 1 status I will record it as my treat after a day at the chalk face. For those of you who can get up to watch- enjoy and give him a cheer from me.

I see that Marchenko has tweeted his annoyance that he hasn't been allowed to practise on RLA - and Jamie has tweeted in agreement with him.

So begins my most frustrating two weeks of the year, no way I'll see it live so will make do with replay/highlights. Even night matches prove difficult except at the weekend. No doubting Andy will march over Marchenko :skippy:

I'll be getting up to watch (I spend Oz and US fortnights in a Red Bull laced daze) but completely sympathise with folk who can't watch at unsocial hours - must be very frustrating as you say.:grouphug: Will give Andy a cheer for you, Hawkeye & Westie :cheer: GO ANDY! :GBflag:

Sally you must have still been tired, play starts at 11am (Midnight here) and 2pm there (+11) is 3am here, so reckon 2-3 pm there which translates to 3-4 am here, unlikely to be 2 unless we have 2 super quick ones earlier

Marchenko played Doha last week losing in the first round to Karlovic in 2 tie-break sets but then lost 3-6 3-6 in the first round of Sydney qualifying to the Australian O'Connell ranked 231. He had a good run in the US Open last year reaching the fourth round where he took a set off Wawrinka.

The Nolefam paranoia is boundless. They're now claiming Andy has given Verdasco his notes on Djokovic. :rolling: I do hope it's true. :big grin:

IMHO he is not serving well and would be better to do 3/4 serves out wide - his opponent does not like hitting out of position. Better than so many serves down the T.

In all honesty I think Marchenko doesn't deserve to be 2 sets down. But Andy has played the crisis points well enough and we had some signs of a few good serves. They were sadly missing in the early service games.
Hopefully he can pull his game together and get off court sharpish having nailed the third

A straight sets win is always good.  Let's not forget the first round at RollyG where Andy came back from 2 sets down to beat Stepanek and he didn't do too badly there. It was similar to the match against Melzer last week who played freely but hasn't carried that form forward.

I don't think it matters, he has worked damned hard for it. Above all else he has picked himself up time after time, and thrown himself back into the fray. Let him be embarrassed. I love the shy smile he has when the subject is broached. It will ease off. The BBC report has gone back to AM.

That match was no more or no less than I expected. I expected Andy to win but I also expected it to be a challenge. First rounds in a slam can be tricky and when Andy hasn't played an opponent very often it takes him a wee while to figure things out. Combine that with the brutal heat and I think Andy did everything he had to do to get himself into Round 2. I don't think it matters if he wins pretty or wins ugly in the earlier rounds, we all know he gets better and better as the tournament progresses. Feeling very good about him. All is very very well! Loved his on court interview! He still manages to pay tribute to Roger, Rafa and Nole. Well done Andy! Great start.:clap::clap:

Watched my recording on FF. Bit unimpressive from Andy in first 2 sets. Third a lot better. I really hope he starts hitting some harder, more aggressive shots consistently soon as not every one will be as obliging as Marchenko.

Still first match safely over and on to the next :knight:

Advantage of watching recording - you only hear a few odd words from Wilander and co. I did hear Christmas and wondered what they were talking about!

Well that wasn't an easy watch but Andy got there in the end which is what counts. I know he was nervous but have to admit to being concerned about his poor first serve percentage, lack of power in his shots and (by his standards) comparative slowness about the court. Here's hoping that the real Andy will turn up in the next round as his young Russian opponent also will try to hit him off the court. I hope he gets the evening match on Wednesday.

I was a bit concerned too anor, for all the reasons you mention, but felt much better after listening his post match interview. Andy admitted he played poorly for the first two sets and said the reason for his slow start was that today's conditions were very different to those he had been practising in, the ball was flying very differently etc and it made him feel uncomfortable until he started feeling his way in. He seemed positive in the interview - he was asked if he would like an evening match next but he said he wasn't too concerned as the rest of the week is forecast to be cooler. I'm very hopeful that the true Andy will show up on Wednesday.

16-01-2017, 19:15
Today was definitely a :phew: moment - I'm not sure "marches past Marchenko" is quite the right description.....more like muddles his way through Marchenko. Notwithstanding what Andy said about the conditions, it was the same for Marchenko and Andy really should have finished him off in short order in that first set. Should have been 6-3 not 7-5! Marchenko was aggressive and when his shots worked, he was basically hitting Andy off the court and making clean winners. Andy on the other hand reverted to his very defensive self (where was the Lendl aggression we've become used to......what will Lendl make of it?) only showing us a glimpse of what he can do towards the end of the third set. He relied too much on Marchenko making mistakes which he obligingly did.

We really need the A game to turn up soon. Saying that, Andy had some slow starts in tournies before Xmas but got steadily better round by round, so fingers crossed but my main concern is that he shouldn't empty the tank too soon. He needs to get off court in short order against the lower ranked players.

rimarli
16-01-2017, 19:35
This is not unusual for the top players as they have everything to lose if they go for their shots like the opponents who have nothing to los. At least he did it in straights, which is more than the others. To start slowly is better for the end of the tournaments, which other top ten players have often said

-J-
16-01-2017, 19:38
don't know who this andy murray guy you lot follow is but the one I have followed for years has never been about blowing guys of court but he figures a away to win and has got rarther quit good at it, besides I really don't think any of us have a clue how much temperature, conditions make in matches, and I get the feeling andy specifically went to Doha to prepare for the cooler night matches which will hopefully payoff in the tougher matches to come knowing full well he would suffer a little in the daytime

I agree entirely. That's why I say when he plays a new opponent, be prepared for a 'slow start' (for want of a better expression) until he figures a way to wear him down! When Andy goes deeper into tournaments he encounters players he knows and has already figured out how to handle them! And as for the conditions...I think today was brutal. As I watched them all play, I marvelled at how they did it in those searing temperatures. They must have been drained when they came off court.
