View Full Version : AO 2017, R2: Andy reels off a 3-setter, 6-3 6-0 6-2

Next up for Andy is 19 year old Russian Andrey Rublev who is currently ranked #152.
The Muscovite plays right-handed, two hand backhand, just as Andy does.
They've never played before so the H2H is 0-0.
Hmmm! Another player Andy hasn't played before. Brace yourselves until Andy figures him out, and once that happens Andy will wear him down.

He is supposed to go for big shots.
It should be a fun match as Rublev is the ultimate drama queen. This from his match today (https://twitter.com/doublefault28/status/820861860144627713). :big grin:

I really want Andy to blitz this match. I do get that Andy always starts a bit slowly and of course he mustn't peak too soon etc, BUT this is Andy's first slam as no 1 and therefore things should be different. He should be bringing an air of authority that sends the message that he is the man now. So much of Nole's dominance involved beating opponents before they even stepped on court through an aura of invincibility. This is what Andy needs to try and cultivate now to help stay no 1. Some convincing wins and Andy can really build an intimidating form for the later rounds. Go Andy, be your ruthless best, you can do it! :cheer::cheer::cheer:

So pleased Andy is the 2nd night match tomorrow even though I will be working, the TV will on. At least it means I won't have to get up at 3.30 a.m. again!
I have to be out tomorrow morning...oh well.
Do we know what time tomorrow morning?

Yes but 2017 has a 7 in it - Andy's lucky number - and if you add up 2 + 0 +1 + 7 = 10, then 1+0 = 1 - it points to Andy staying No 1 !!
Rub away Rublev, Andy! :cheer::cheer:

Perfect :) time to go into work and be out again before someone tells me the score! Phasing back is a wonderful thing! Hubby would lose it if I said I was getting up in the middle of the night to watch, although there is something great about it!

Good thinking. Let's hope I.L. is thinking the same way
Oh pants! Tomorrow morning the only morning all week I have to be out! And can't wriggle out of it either! Will be itching all day to get home to watch replay. I will try to avoid hearing result before I get back but if I do will still enjoy watching it anyway. However, glad for Andy's sake he has a night match. I think he enjoys night matches.

Stuck in an office so just following scores for me. But as much as I enjoy watching the World Number 1, I'd be sticking with Evo for the time being, that's where the story is.
As Andy said, Rublev likes to let rip. Good hold. 1-0

Will be watching Andy and recording Evo. Match just started but Eurosport not showing it yet-Kygrios/Seppi still on 1 right now.
Got Andy on Eurosport player and Dan on tv - what fun!!!
Rublev holds to love. 1-1
Andy holds to love, looks focused. 2-1
Gonna be a horrible morning only get connecting in one little corner of the course
Considering their rankings, I had Sir Andy winning this one very easily.
He is an up and coming player
"King of the Lobs". 15-30
Excellent. I am out shortly. I had hoped it would be over by now. Between Kyrgios and Seppi, Dan and Cillic and Murray, I am in a state of confusion.

Rublev may have a few big shots but Andy a step ahead and keeps him at bay to take 1st,keep it going!
One thing all the commies seem to forget when they talk about the Andy/Djoko head to head is that they were fairly even until Andy had his back surgery. After that, for eighteen months or so, they just weren't on a level playing field. I don't think Andy is given nearly enough credit for his tenacity in coming back as he has from the surgery.

Andy threatening to run away with this now, a few too many errors from Rublev now and Murray showing his class!

Only 25% first serves from Rublev. 5-0
Don't be too downhearted young Andrey. You're playing the best in the world and you're still only 19.

Mac doesn't half talk some rubbish. Just said players should be able to call for psychologist during a match like they can call for medical doctor.:barmy:Gave Rublev and Nick K as examples of players who would benefit. You cannot be serious Mac - it's on them to be able to work it out for themselves.

Interesting to think of the 19-year-oldl Andy playing himself now... this opponent is very regular but does not have the power of shot to consistently trouble Andy but give him time... C'mon Andy!
Andy saying "it's not good". ADV
DF and Andy on one leg breaks. 2-1
It can't be that serious, otherwise he wouldn't be able to walk on it.

Throbbing ankle.

If it was serious he wouldn't be able to walk let alone play and it seems he's not so worried.;

Whatever it was hopefully a couple of days "treatment" will resolve the problem.

The Eurosport team especially Greg Rusedski are being ridiculous. I have no idea why they get paid so much!!
Agreed Josephine. Mac so loves the sound of his own voice but just grateful it wasn't Boris as the "star" addition to the awful Bradman. Anyway, a very good concentrated effort from Andy today and conserved energy to boot. Just hope that his ankle is ok for sterner tests ahead.
Wel done Andy!

McEnroe predicting a burn out from Andy. Eurosport killing tennis with its commentators.
Mac is a nightmare. I wish he would go back to coaching - it would give us all a rest! Kyrgios' comment on whether he had pain in his knee or not - 'Don't know mate. Ask Johnny Mac - he knows everything!' Perhaps Mac should coach Kyrgios - now that would be interesting!
Nice straightforward win, putting the young gun firmly in his place. As I'm at work I had to make do with the BBC website to follow, but will try and catch up later. Really hope that ankle is fine, hopefully the magic hands of the physio and some ice will do the trick.

So pleased Andy won! Have only managed to see highlights so far, bit disgruntled with Eurosport Player for not providing a full replay (yet). Will watch full match later. But I couldn't wait any longer to know the result so watched highlights then came on here. Thanks for all the comments everyone. They really are great when you haven't managed to watch the full match. And some of them made me giggle!! Glad to learn Andy played a good match, though I find the ankle thing a little disconcerting. By Friday it should be ok. Well done champ! :bravo: :swingin:
Nice from Rublev and also he was antics free today which I think also showed his respect for Andy.

Hadn't picked up on the antic-free element, Bardot which I agree was probably down to his respect for Andy. I did think at one point that Andrey was going to burst into tears so maybe that would have been a tantrum moment against a lesser opponent. He is certainly one to watch for the future.

Not been able to get online while Andy playing but have been livescoring & watching highlights (have signed up for Eurosport player £19.99 for a year till end of month). Good effort today, hopefully no after effects from going over on ankle. And what about Dan Evans. According to tennis podcast on twitter, Andy was very keen to find out if Dan won after his match & beamed when he found out he had!
Cmon Muzz!
McEnroe predicting a burn out from Andy. Eurosport killing tennis with its commentators.
I heard that too, thought to myself if he was gonna burn out surely it would'av happened at the WTF end of 16?
When this was pointed out to him he sorta back tracked and said more of a mental burn out.
Eh. This is Andy we're talking about not Joker.
Next time I'm at a tennis match and Macca should be there and close to me. My post on here will read thus.
I came within a stones throw away from McEnroe, but for the life of me couldn't find a sodding stone anywhere.

I was never a fan of Mac when he played (couldn't forgive him for beating my idol Borg at wimbly - well I was a stroppy teenager!), but grew to like him with his Wimbledon commie duties. However, he does seem to have quite a downer on Andy, always getting a dig about something, which makes me dislike him again.
Kyrgios made me laugh in his press conference when someone asked him about his knee and he said they should ask Johnny Mac, he seems to know everything! Because Mac had been making comments apparently......
If Mac and Bradnam are commentating on Andy's match tonight I shall have to watch with the sound turned down.
