Worth bouncing this up to the top as we're playing tomorrow. Turkey, Portugal and the biggest test to come from Latvia (two players ranked in the 30's) in the group stages. Win the group and a likely play off against Croatia to be promoted to the world group. With Konta available, this should be attainable.
Is this being shown on tv in the U.K.?
Hev is going well in her first match vs Murta (Portugal).
6-1 *3-1

Not as far as I know.

Hev serving for the match *5-1 in the second.
I'm out for the rest of the morning...
Go team GB!

Chatting to some ladies out in Ottawa, BATS members, they were flying back to Gatwick transferring directly to Heathrow and then out to Tallinn to see the Fed cup. Hope they made it in time! BTW 6-2 in doubles

Well done ladies :clap::clap:
Well played the girls - a great start. Does Naomi not play Fed Cup?
So who we got next? Turkey? - lower level Fed cup baffles me we seem to play 3 or 4 matches in a week and if we don't get to the next group we have to wait a year to play again?

I think we play Latvia tomorrow.
Yes - I think that's how it works!

Watson is currently playing the World 307 Marcinkevica, Konta to play Ostapenko afterwards. This ought to be another victory (as the whole week should be).

Well played the girls - a great start. Does Naomi not play Fed Cup?
Mr Broady Sr fell out with the LTA years ago over something Naomi posted on social media and LTA disciplining her, then a couple of years ago Liam Broady started working with the LTA again and farther didn't speak to son, whether that's still the case???? if it is don't think we will ever see Naomi in a GB vest, so sad for everyone but especially her trying to maintain a relationship with her brother, be loyal to her farther and concentrate on her tennis
(this I have gleaned from interviews with her over the years in different media)

09-02-2017, 08:45
and while I was typing that Heather went from serving for the 1st set at 5-1 to having to try again 5-3
* better, love service game 1st set in the bag 6-3
** wow she's in a hurry serving for the match 5-0 in the second
*** wraps it up in just over an hour 6-3 6-0
this should do her the world of good hope she can take the confidence she has surly gained from this out on the tour
Heather wins the match :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

I did think that when Laura was picked
Jo wins the first set 6 - 2 and leads 4 - 1 in the second
Jo wins the match 6 - 2, 6 - 3.
JAMES4578

Quick wins for both again, well done Johanna and Heather!:clap::clap: Ostapenko is ranked 35th and so scoreline there looks impressive.

09-02-2017, 11:58
And already a set up (6-0) in the doubles. Pretty much guaranteed to be through to the Final, might be worth giving Jo a rest tomorrow and letting someone else (Robson?) a go in the singles?
Robson and Rae take the first set 6 - 0
JAMES4578
09-02-2017, 12:39

Looks like Estonia win i think?
So what happens with the 8 teams that are through?
Are they drawn again?
Sorry for my ignorance..
Only group winners go through. Looks like GB only need one rubber against Turkey.

Sorry for my ignorance..
GB will play the winners of Croatia/Hungary in the play offs tomorrow (probably Croatia). Win that (which they should) and then it's another proper play off tie in April in a Davis Cup format I think.
Heather leading 5 - 0 in the first set
Hev gets a bagel for breakfast

Jo is on court and with an early lead 2-0

Croatia won the first match against Hungary, but Babos is a set up on Konjuh so this could be going to a decider.

Cmon ladies, two more wins and we could be playing in maui like Germany. That could have been a trip and a half if the ladies had made it last year, Ottawa... followed by Maui lol .....A bit better than Tallinn!
Jo gets broken back 5-5
Go Jo!
JAMES4578
10-02-2017, 10:50
GB through anyway after Heather's emphatic win, however surprising Jo struggling-come on
sir coolerking
10-02-2017, 10:56
I really don't know why she's playing, the last thing she needs is a tough 3 setter before the play off tomorrow. Might be better just to lose and get off court.
Jo takes the second set 6-4
2-2 in the decider.
Jo fought off a couple of break points.
JAMES4578
10-02-2017, 12:01
Still a battle and suppose not ideal preparation for play off, whether Jo should've played another matter but for confidence a win would be good-Konta beaks for 4-3!

Meanwhile Croatia and Hungary are into a final set decider in the doubles for who gets to play GB.
Juarak and Konjuh beat Babos and Galfi 7 - 5, 3 - 6, 6 - 1.
Jocelyn and Laura win the first set 6 - 2 :yahoo: :GBflag:

10-02-2017, 14:00
So that's 9 out of 9 and only lost 2 sets in the process. Must be massive favourites to beat Croatia tomorrow. No idea who we could meet in April after that, but apparently we've not had a Fed Cup home draw since 1993.
JAMES4578
10-02-2017, 14:02
A clean sweep again, well done Jocelyn and Laura!
Well done the girls!!:GBflag::clap::GBflag: Good luck for tomorrow.
Will there be a stream tomorrow anywhere?
Heather Watson wins the first set against Donna Vekic 6 - 2.
Heather was broken when she served for the match, Vekic at *4-5.
Heather then blew 3 break points to seal the first rubber...
A fourth break point... gone.
Now a fifth... taken! Heather wins 6-2 6-4!
Heather wins 6 - 2, 6 - 4 on her sixth match point.
Heather wins the match - 6-2, 6-4 well done - :yahoo: :yahoo: :GBflag: :GBflag:
Well done. That's the sort of match she would have lost if she was playing for herself, but because it was for GB she kept her focus and won. That's 4/4 for her this week. Well done. Try to take this week into normal play.
Jo lost the first set 4 - 6, but is leading 2 - 0 in the second

Argh!
She was up 4-2 when I last looked but obviously lost the next 4 games.
And from being 2-0 up she's now lost 3 games and is 2-3 in the 2nd.
C'mon Jo, you can do it!!!

It's Konjuh who breaks for 5-3, come on Jo!
Konjuh is no mug but still a disappointing loss. A big call for who plays the deciding doubles. I'd go with Heather & Joss Rae.
JAMES4578
11-02-2017, 11:30
Certainly disappointing and wouldn't have expected that , however Konjuj is a prospect with a few good wins. So all down to the doubles, come on GB!
there's also a live blog https://www.lta.org.uk/major-events/international-events/fed-cup/fed-cup-news/2017/fed-cup-live-blog/
The scoreboard says it's Heather & Jo playing doubles against Konjuh/Jurak.
Oh dear - I thought this was done and dusted after Heather's win. Jo will feel she's let the side down, especially if we lose the doubles. At least with playing the doubles Jo will feel she has a chance to redeem herself. Go girls!
Heather & Jo have played together several times, most recently at the Olympics where they lost in the second round. They played the Australian Open last year losing in the second round to Joss Rae & Anna Smith.
First set to Croatia 4 - 6

I'm wondering if someone can explain - I'd love to understand how the Fed cup works and where Team GB fits into it all?
heather to serve, 4-3 up, maintaining their break
ooops! dropped serve, Croats now at 4-4
The "serve dot" on the livescore is wrong. It's 5-4 to GB on serve.
Second set to GB

1 set all. Even if GB come through this, I still think it's poor captaincy.
JAMES4578
11-02-2017, 13:46
Great, hopefully a strong start in the decider for Heather/Jo-come on!
broke off to eat. heather/jo won set2 6-4, but they're now a break down in set 3
The "serve dot" is now in the correct position on livescore although it might not seem so since that's 4 consecutive breaks of serve in the third set. ;)
JAMES4578
11-02-2017, 14:19
Quite a few breaks, hold would be good now!
break back, now Croatia serving at 3-4
somehoww the blog is ahead of the LS substitute
yeah!!! break, Jo serving for the match now, with an insurance break too
Jo Konta to serve for the match at 5-3, nothing can go wrong now. ;)
Phew! By the skin of their no doubt shiny white teeth.
and she does it! GB win dubs 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 2hrs 8mins

At least once if not twice Judy captained team GB through this stage to World Group II play-offs. 2019 is the earliest GB can play in the World Group.

Really pleased. A bit like with DC in Canada with Dom Inglot being the crucial player, it's really good that Heather Watson has been the stalwart this week. She has won all her matches. Also good that Laura Robson was back in the game. Well done to them all.
My mistake - I thought they were through - wishful thinking I suppose. I never have understood the structure of the Fed Cup - can someone explain it to me in words of one syllable please?
JAMES4578
11-02-2017, 14:45
Certainly was a challenge but Heather and Jo get the win in the end, well done!:cheer::cheer::cheer: Might be question mark over some choices the past few days but on this occasion didn't backfire.
Fed Cup format. GB are now into the World Group II play-offs which will mean a home or away tie.
Fed Cup is structured with an eight-nation World Group and eight-nation World Group II, while the remaining countries are divided into three regional Zones depending on their location.
In 2017, 107 nations have entered Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, making it the world's largest annual international team competition in women's sport.
Fed Cup is structured with an eight-nation World Group and eight-nation World Group II, contested over three weekends during the year. The remaining countries are then divided into three regional Zones depending on their location.
Groups
World Group
The four nations that win their World Group first round ties progress to play in the semifinals and subsequent final, at which the winning team is crowned champion. These nations are all guaranteed of a place in the top tier the following year. The four nations that lose their first round ties have to contest the World Group play-offs.
World Group play-offs
The World Group play-offs decide promotion and relegation between the four first round losers from World Group and four first round winners from World Group II.
World Group II
The four nations that win their World Group II first round ties progress to play in the World Group play-offs. The four nations that lose their first round ties have to contest the World Group II play-offs.
World Group II play-offs
The World Group II play-offs decide promotion and relegation between the four first round losers from World Group II and four winners from Zone Group I events.
Zone Groups
The Zone Groups are divided into three regions: Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe/Africa. Within each region there are two divisions, Group I being the higher and Group II the lower, except for Europe/Africa Zone, which also has a Group III.
Zone Groups are week-long events played at one location. Each Group is initially split into round-robin pools, with play-offs then deciding promotion and relegation. The exact format of each Group varies according to the number of participating teams.

Bravo Team GB :bravo::clap::clap: I would just add the play off is for the equivalent of the men getting into the world group in DC i.e. the top 16 teams in the world, it's just that in Fed Cup World Group I and World Group II each consist of 8 teams.
Edit: ooops, just seen that this point is covered in Bardot's post above - just keen for the girls to get full credit when they make in into WGII :peace:
I'm bouncing off the ceiling!
Also now torn, the next tie will be in April - Can I afford both? Can I get tix to both? - will we get a home tie?!!
Well done girls
I think the last home tie was about 24 or 25 years ago. So, we must be due one.
Oh please please please - I soooooooooooooooooo need to do a Fed Cup tie
oh, blush etc so not like davis cup, no 3rd day matches, no first player v first, no tense fifth live match???
No clue, I'm really confused as to the play off format and dates. Also, how is it decided which of WG II we play?
The draw is on Tuesday we will play one of these
Russia/Taipei Romania/Belgium Ukraine/Australia Italy/Slovakia
Do we know the dates of the Play-offs in April?

That doubles match was the most frustrating one I have ever followed on live stream. Hardly any holds of serve from either side and you can't see why!!
That 3rd set! they were exchanging breaks for the first 4 games LOL annoyingly - hope the WG II Playoff tie is on the TV

Someone has tweeted a reply to me that it's 22/23 April i.e. 2 weeks after the DC weekend.
And guess who is doing the Wimbledon tour with her Mother in law on the 22nd April! wonders if I can re-arrange that! or can we play the tie at Wimbledon? ;) LOL
Thanks for the explanation, Bardot. When the draw is done, how do they decide who plays at home and who plays away?
Thanks for the explanation, Bardot. When the draw is done, how do they decide who plays at home and who plays away?
Its like DC - if we have not played them before in the WG (which of those 8 nations we havent) then it's drawn by lots
The draw takes place on Tuesday
Thanks, Glenys - fingers crossed for a home tie.

The draw is on Tuesday we will play one of these
Russia/Taipei Romania/Belgium Ukraine/Australia Italy/Slovakia
Russia, Belgium, Ukraine and Slovakia all won so we can't play them, they will play the Group1 losers
GB options now are therefore Taipei, Romania,Australia and Italy
on paper Romania are toughest with Halep + 3 others all ranked higher than Heather, Tapei home would be the best option
Italy almost the same having Vinci, Errani and Schiavone, all previously top10, Vinci/Errani a top doubles pairing
Australia Stosur and Gavrilova but if either of them doesn't play everyone else 150+
Format 5 over 2 days with the doubles last
Apparently (according to twitter) Canada can overtake Taepei in the rankings (how?) so they could be there instead? I don't understand
I'm badly wanting a home tie, then I can see if I can move the Wimbledon Tour visit with MIL and see if she fancies the Fed Cup tie that weekend instead! all can't really be done until Tuesday as an away tie will be out of the question

Sounds highly possible that looking at current rankings Canada 17th could be seeded instead of Taipei who are 16th since that is before points added for this round
Canada have Bouchard but nobody else , next is Albanda who is about 15 places lower than Tara Moore, GB #4
When will the seedings be out? assuming that must be before the draw on Tuesday! Away tie and Italy or Romania would be the "nearest" but probably out of the question if I want to do the DC QF in France the same month too!

If Belgium can beat them in Bucharest without Halep who had a knee injury(Begu, Niculescu, Cirstea), it's possible, certainly more possible if Halep doesn't play
Maybe worth a trip just to see the Romanian coach, Mr Nasty...sorry Ilie Nastase
Hmm
I had almost promised myself tickets had it been a home tie.
If we'd got a home tie, I probably would have gone.
At least the tie is in Europe so Jo is likely to commit rather than if it was in Asia or Australia. Presume the tie will be played on clay.

Only direct flights to Constanta i saw from Luton only on tuesdays and saturdays (wizzair)
Unsurprisingly, the team to face Romania is unchanged.

I read, in Russell Fuller's BBC article, about the Fed Cup might become like the Davis Cup. They're thinking of having sixteen teams in the one group.
Good luck to the girls.
Am out in the morning but hope to see some tennis when I get back.

Poor Anne Keothavong!
Just my thoughts.
I heard what Nastase said about Serena Williams' baby on radio five live last night. A Romanian reporter, supposedly, thought it was a joke.
I heard radio five live sports extra will be doing live commentary on today's matches from 9am.

Good effort from Heather but Halep takes first 6-4,hopefully she can keep challenging in the 2nd.

Nastase sent off! No idea why - didn't see it.
Konta looks really upset. She is crying. Romania has to be defaulted surely?
Josephine

Play suspended now. But what actually happened?
Nastase - racist, sexist dinosaur.
My goodness! Have we ever seen the like of this before?? I was really enjoying that match too. Distressing to see Jo so upset.
To be honest I think that GB should make a stand, and refuse to play. If Nastase or the crowd said something offensive enough to make Jo cry, (and she is hardly a wilting flower), and has had to be removed from the court, then either the Romanians need to be defaulted, or GB need to resign.
This is horrible.
What is the situation when a captain has been sent off? I really don't think anyone should take his/her place. Who knows the rules? And should the captain be allowed back the next day? Once he/she is off that should be for rest of the tie IMO.
They are back on court, but Jo still looks really upset.
Girls back on court again!

They will come back after a break which seems fair enough.

shocking, apparently insulting comment from someone in crowd , Nastase reacted in bad way-making resulting in his removal after deregatory comments to Jo and Anne (Johanna was pretty upset)) and then following disturbance match suspended. Nastase of course recently made totally unacceptable comment and ITF investigating. They're back on court now though.
Followed by an even better "put that in your pipe and smoke it" response.
And a hold. One game away.
Three match points, just used two to bring home the rubber. Well done, particularly after that. I still think the Romanian's should be defaulted though.
Jo wins - very well done in the circumstances!! :GBflag: :GBflag: :GBflag:

Fabulous from Johanna Konta as she responds in perfect fashion taking 5 successive games to level the tie, well done! There was strong case for GB to be awarded this rubber though even if satisfying to do it on the court.
Really nasty from Nastase. The full saga is on Simon Briggs twitter feed. Suffice to say if I quoted it verbatim Pabbers and the Mods would have a complete apoplectic breakdown.
This tie should have been defaulted.

I agree that the tie should have been defaulted. Nastase's behaviour on court was absolutely disgraceful, as it has been all week and was, seemingly, at the last tie against Belgium too. I do feel very sorry for the Romanian girls though.

Well Nasty is no longer the Fed Captain, so hopefully things will calm down both off and on the court. I do hope action will be taken against him.

He had already acted sleazily towards AK at the draw yesterday, grappling her and asking her room number as well as making the Serena comment

Yes that will be interesting to see what the ITF 'do'. According to Simon Briggs on his Twitter account the ITF has already bottled it by not defaulting the match!

I still think that the ITF have bottled it. In its way I would say it was far more serious than the incident in the Canada tie. That was an accident born out of the frustration of a young player. This was calculated and nasty, and followed previous comments.
The ITF are gutless. Had there been an immediate default, it would have reminded the fans to keep it within appropriate boundaries.
I have to hold my hand up and say that I used to love watching Nastase play - I was a real fan.
But his behaviour today was disgusting, and sadly now that's what people will remember of him.
disgusting , and a really bad example for womens tennis

I have to say the same too. I adored watching him, cried for days when Stan Smith beat him in the '72 Wimbledon final! But I too am totally disgusted and appalled by his behaviour. Makes me wonder why I ever supported him! (Probably looked at it all then through very youthful rose tinted specs I guess!) He has let not only tennis down, but himself in a big way. Don't agree with Bouncy who says he was worse years ago...I think he has got worse as he grows older!

That's not nasty it's just plain stupid.
Think he should change his name by deed poll to Richard Head.
He was probably as bad years ago but I don't things were as widely publicised then. He most certainly has not improved with age.

I am glad to say that I supported Stan Smith in the 72 final. I was very young and had a crush on him! Not my taste in later years at all. But I'm glad some instinct guided me to support him - he was an honourable man who stood with the other players in the 73 boycott rather than defend his title. I also saw him in the Arthur Ashe doc in which he came across as a true man of integrity.
I remember a story told of DC in Romania in the 70s - Smith v Nastase - when the whole crowd were baying for Smith's blood - absolutely no respect - making huge amount of noise - and he stood up to the line and served a booming ace and went on to win the match. Well done him!
Nastase is a throwback - sexist, racist bully. And the suggestions to Keothavong - what could she do in public? - laugh it off. If not you might be called humourless or a feminazi. But it is sexual harrassment, and he showed his true colours on court - a nasty man who has no respect for women - who thinks he can swear at them and make derogatory comments. So the playful 'joke' comment is no joke at all.
Sounding quite familiar in some ways...
So shocked at Nastase's behaviour. I loved him when I was young - although he was always a bad boy and nicknamed 'Nasty' by the press. But I had no idea he was so sexist and truly nasty.

Certainly most annoyed by Cristea's comments though give credit to Halep for her interjection to the crowd , hopefully action will be taken against Nastase! Never seen him at his peak but have a video of the 1972 Wimbledon final (later transferred to DVD)Hopefully Jo can play well tomorrow!
Cristea did herself no favours - she just came across as having a huge chip on her shoulder. Halep seemed genuinely upset and embarrassed.
I heard about Konta crying and walking off for about 25 minutes yesterday. The ITF, I heard, would be investigating into what happened. Later, I heard Nastase has been banned from the stadium for today's matches.
I wish Anne and the team all the very best of luck today, and trust there will be no more "nastiness" from the crowd

Great game from Jo to make it 1-1 in the 2nd set. Was out all of yesterday so missed the disgusting drama, but watched the footage. Good to see Jo bouncing back today. Hope she can level it up to take Halep to a 3rd set
Cirstea's comment "we treated you guys so nice". A section of the crowd this morning to Jo.

Must admit it did make me smile. :big grin::shamed:
Oh dear - Jo lost. :crying: :crying:
I feel that she did not get a very good sleep after yesterday's events
Ballsy interview from Halep. Clearly feels Romania were hard done by yesterday.
It was interesting that yesterday Halep asked the crowd to behave otherwise Romania might be disqualified and yet today she said the crowd had been very fair today and yesterday! I can't see why she thinks they were hard done by - they could have been defaulted. As it was they only had a 25 minute delay and an abusive captain removed from the court. I was full of admiration for her appeal to the crowd yesterday but she has gone down in my estimation today.
Ballsy interview from Halep. Clearly feels Romania were hard done by yesterday.
So their captain sexually harasses our captain, is verbally abusive to journalists doing their jobs by reporting his racist comments about Serena Williams and then is verbally abusive to the umpire, and the whole British team - aggressively so and Romania are hard done by? I am obviously missing something........
As for that picture - sorry that's just plain nasty. How many of them would cope with an out of control bloke using sexist and threatening language towards them? This tie should have resulted in The Romanian team being defaulted. It's to the ITF's eternal shame they haven't been.

Wasn't too impressed by Halep today. I know she wants to defend her team and town but... yesterday they were clearly in the wrong and she could've left out the thinly veiled digs.
From what I've read and watched it would seem neither Cirstea or Halep have acknowledged that Nastase's disgusting behaviour was unacceptable. They conveniently claim that they don't know what he said and their focus is on the crowd behaviour which they deem acceptable as in a "we know it happens, just deal with it" way. Nastase is such a huge figure in Romania and not just in sport that maybe there's pressure on them to not comment.

Disappointing Jo outplayed but yesterday's events obviously had an effect and dismayed by Halep's comments today, just hope Heather can give GB a chance!
Perhaps there is a cultural difference here that we don't appreciate. Maybe that sort of boorish, sexist behaviour is accepted in Romania - I wouldn't know. I did think yesterday that Halep seemed very embarrassed but she certainly changed her tune today.
WimbledonWestie
23-04-2017, 11:24
Possibly- but Halep and her team mates are well travelled, they must realise that these comments are not generally considered acceptable world wide. And Cirstea saying jo should have put up with it because it's happened to her? Two wrongs don't make a right.
I agree WW - nothing can condone Nastase's behaviour.
Begu serving for the match and the tie - c'monnnnn Heather!
JAMES4578
23-04-2017, 11:58
Unfortunately Romania take it, Heather had chances but Begu wins 6-4, 7-5. Certainly a frustrating tie for GB to put it mildly!
So sorry that neither Jo nor Heather could pull it off today to at least give them a chance in the doubles. Our girls did their best but it just wasn't to be. I'm pretty sure that they will be glad to get out of there - it hasn't exactly been a pleasurable experience for them.
I thought Heather played a great match...full marks for effort Heather! At the end, Begu ran straight over to Cirstea and I didn't see any handshake at all! I thought she should have shaken hands with Heather first, then celebrate! Remember Andy in Ghent!! He was very aware of that. Perhaps the hand shake simply wasn't caught on camera, but it must have been very brief!!
I agree about the handshake but, after all that has gone on, it's probably par for the course.
Speechless ....
