Andy is entered in the doubles with Zimonjic and they currently just miss out on being seeded although that could change if Zimonjic improves his ranking this week in Rotterdam and Rojer/Tecau don't. Unfortunately for Zimonjic, he and Nestor have drawn top seeds Mahut/PHH in the first round.

The second round wont be a pushover either. Both Troicki or GGL can be tough opponents on their day. But just what Andy needs to get him back in competition mode. 5 weeks off - wow - when did he last have that (without birth traumas that is)
Really looking forward to seeing him out there again....bring it on Andy

Well, of course Andy's back surgery has to be factored into that stat, but nonetheless resurgent Fed is the player who concerns me this year. One post-2013, fair and square Fed win was the Wimbers SF 2015. Terrifying, and Fed is beginning to unleash that kind of ultra aggressive tennis again. I actually want Andy to face Fed in Dubai so we can see how they currently measure up. As I put on Fed's thread, I have a sneaking suspicion that he might skip RG so he can really target Wimbledon - Fed is going to be an enormous threat on the grass and I want Andy to be ready for him, so I want them to face off several times before then, starting in Dubai. Go Andy!

Because of the rain today in Dubai the final qualifiers will take place tomorrow. Federer due to play 3 p.m. UK time, so Andy must kick off on Tuesday. Playing dubs tomorrow on Court No. 1
I'm sure there was a statement last year from the ATP/TennisTV that there would be coverage of double's matches at 500 events in 2017. There certainly hasn't been any coverage in Rio and I don't remember any in Rotterdam. Will it be different in Dubai and we get to see Andy v Evo?

I too understood that Tennis TV was going to show an increased number of doubles in 2017 as part of its 'new look'. It did show a couple of matches, and is covering the doubles final at Delray Beach now. But I was really disappointed when Jamie's matches were not shown and I think it's unlikely Dan and Andy will be shown tomorrow...there is no sign of it on the schedule of play! Maybe it will come up later!
Confirmation...Tennis TV will not be showing Andy's doubles tomorrow! :grrr:

Good news. In Andy's words 'I'm fine now, and have been training flat out for the last few weeks' . If he has been fine for the last few weeks, I would not be in least bit surprised if Andy was going down with the virus in Aus, which is why he never really got going down under (although, of course, he would never say this himself).
And agreed - just cannot wait for this tournament and hopefully a strong showing - Nole took the bragging rights in Doha  and Aus was (understandably) disappointing ..... but it's OK, I have filed all that under "Fake News" ;)..... 2017 starts......NOW. I watched it Jerry and certainly from the beginning of the second set Rosol was flexing and shaking out his left leg quite frequently. He did have treatment on it and had called for the doctor, but retired before doctor came.

Another disappointing result for Berdy though Hasse can be challenging on his day,Nando certainly had good win 7-5 in 3rd over Bautista Agut and Dzumhur followed up the Stan upset with a straight sets win over Granollers. Federer's match going pretty much to plan, though Donskoy got one of the breaks back in 1st.

Had to get back to work at 5-5 so didn't see the end of this match. Donskoy looked to be playing well though and I am pleased for him on what might be the win of his career so far. I'll be cheering him on in the next round
Not many sports where players have to face the press after a loss, Federer handles it as well as anyone. Interesting about playing someone for the first time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9ewSPgPfSs
What annoys me about this interview and many he gives is that regardless of a few words mumbled later he always starts by suggesting he let it get away, he beat himself, he can't ever accept being beaten by anyone. Yeah sure he had his chances and lost them but what about the credit to the 26 year old ranked outside the top 100 who found a way. What was the comment minimising his opponent's winners for? it annoys me when players forget there opponent was even there. Then the suggestion that it was because he got an injury in OZ, then didn't train even is Switzerland, then didn't know the guy, then that he felt heavy. The other guy was better today, he won by beating fed, unless he stood up and took his own chances and tried to be solid no amount of mistakes from the other side would have let him through. Federer played better here than djoko did in his match in Acapulco. Yet somehow djoko got through, mainly because his opponent couldn't take advantage of the chances given to him. So the idea that fed beat himself, it just annoys me.
Goodness me! What a day in Dubai! I had been away all day, and was keeping myself away from the scores as I wanted to watch the replay of Andy's match when I got back. After watching that I checked the other results and could hardly believe what I was seeing! First Berdy :surprised:, then Federer :yikes:, not to mention Bautista Agut and Granollers!! Sorry about Dan. I watched the replay and I thought he did himself great credit...at least he managed to take a set off Gael. H'mm. All very interesting now!
It's one of the many things I dislike about Fed. It's all about him. He never ever credits his opponent for playing better. There are always excuses. He always gives the impression that every loss doesn't really count because there was something wrong with him. He never accepts that somebody else just played better than he did on the day. He is always trying to diminish their achievements.

Twice in a five min interview he said that Donskoy played well, but obviously when players give interviews it is about *their* perspective of how *they* played (in other words, exactly what he was asked about) so this will be his main focus. It makes me laugh because he can't win - when Fed says he played well then he's being 'arrogant', and when like today he is being self critical he's being an 'excuse-maker'. Of course he will beat himself up about today's performance because he had chances that slipped away. For my money Fed is the mentally strongest player I have ever watched and fundamental to that skill is knowing when to say 'too good' and when to say 'I'm angry at myself' - he would not have such success in the mental fortitude dept if he didn't get the balance right.
Donskoy understandably hyper after his win today. "Nobody don't like him[Roger]", obviously hasn't been on this forum. :big grin: He mentions playing Pouille before at the US Open in 2015 but modestly doesn't say won in 4 sets. Nice guy.

Andy and Pouille now the only seeds left in the draw. This has certainly panned out to be a much weaker tournament than Acapulco, let's hope Andy can take advantage.
It will be awhile yet :rain::rain:

Players are on court. Go Andy!
Hey - just finished painting the guest bedroom - what good timing is that?

Most of the seeds out. Andy must not go the same way!
Gutted monfils lost, I would have liked to see him get back into the top 10. Didn't see the match but it seems from that stats at the ATP that verdasco was serving well.

If Andy goes out, I will lose interest in this Tournament and support Rafa in Acapulco!

Verdasco's weapons proved tough for Monfils who was still a bit disappointing, pity Gael is out and has not been great tournament for some of the big names.

Gael can be very hit and miss, it's a shame. He has had a number of disappointing matches. Thanks for the update James.

I love La Monf but happy for Nando :) always remember his lovely smile to Andy at WTFs years ago, it was during an award for someone but don't remember who.
I always remember Nando at the net after he lost the close five setter to Andy at Wimbledon 2013 - he gave Andy a big smile and said, 'Now, go on and win it.' Classy!
Donskoy to serve for the second set.

Pouille looked to have the measure of Donskoy not so long ago, all to play for now!

Whoever wins this will be nice and tired tomorrow. Nearly 1 a.m. in Dubai.

Pouille regained momentum in the 3rd thus far, up 3-0.
Donsky has just broken back. Can he hold? Currently Murray has played 1.5 hours more. Nothing to him.

Donsky hanging tough and Pouille under bit of pressure, holds though for 5-4. Think Andy should be fine with either particularly as such a late finish (though not taking it for granted)
I feel a bit sorry for these two - there's hardly anyone watching them. Not surprising really as it's 1.30 a.m.
What a shame. 2 mps for Pouille.
They are both looking knackered. Pouile now has match point.
Well saved. 1 down, 1 to go.
Well they can blame Kohlscreiber for the previous match going on so long......!!!

Gritty from Donsky as he saves 2mps and holds for 5 all, tough encounter at this hour.
Now two break points for Donskoy. You really couldn't write the script for tonight in Dubai!
My word it's late there for those guys to still be on court!
Back to deuce .............. and Pouille saves to go 6-5 up.

It's all happening, Pouille now saves 2 bps for 6-5, Donsky up to the challenge and perhaps fitting it's breaker to decide it.
Andy and Kohli were taking the court just about this time in Madrid two years ago finishing after 3am. ;) Gritty from both players saving MPs & BPs.
Love hold for Donskoy and we're into yet another tiebreak.
TB! Who do we want to win? Andy has such a brilliant record against Pouille, I think I'll go with him.
Donskoy, makes the victory over Federer look less like a flash in the pan.
For me I'd go with donskoy just to back up his win over fed and get some more success. I'm a softy
Cue the kiss of death collapse...
Donskoy's got Pouille where he wants him, 5-0 up in the TB. ;)

Pouille leading 5-0 in tiebreak, Donskoy will do well to recover this one

Should have kept my gob shut. Or not typed. Blimey I forgot about that Madrid match!

Pouille with fast start in breaker as he goes up 5-1, think Andy matches up well against him and so fairly comfortable if he is the semi final opponent (however remember Fed's match) No comeback this time as Lucas takes it 7-2. Still great run for Donsky and another good match here.
Andy's 6 sets against Pouille last year, 6-2 6-1 6-3 6-1 6-3 6-0. More of the same tomorrow please.
Pouille takes it. Poor Donskoy. Although he has taken a set off Murray, whereas Pouille hasnt in 3 meetings.
Well to everyone who wanted pouille to win, you're welcome :rolling:;)

Donskoy isn't entered in qualifying for either Indian Wells or Miami and is due to play challengers in China both weeks. You'd think he would warrant at least a qualifying wild card in both.

In the other semi, Verdasco takes the first set but Haase a break up in the second.
I couldn't decide who I wanted to win the match but yesterday picking a side resulted in the collapse of the guy I picked, poor donskoy so I will support both lol

Hoping Fernando will get the win here. Not a fan of Haase.

Haase takes the 2nd set (eventually 7-5) and the decider is set to begin.....
Looks like hasse has been broken at the start of the third
JAMES4578
03-03-2017, 15:34
Two close sets but Nando just stormed away in the end taking the decider 6-1, a deserving finalist. However whilst I prefer Verdasco probably tougher opponent should Andy join him.
Really wasn't expecting the third to be one sided. I'm glad he came through though :) hopefully Murray can just two sets to be better prepared for the final should he get there
