View Full Version : Acapulco 500 and São Paulo 250 25th Feb - 5th march 2017
Two of the tournies on that week, not including Dubai here as it has its own thread.
Djoko joining Raffa and Delpo in Acapulco next week http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/djokovic-acapulco-2017-wild-card raonic and goffin will also be playing.
Theim is also down to play, he will be looking to defend his title from last year but it's a tough line up.
São Paulo - unlike Acapulco which switched to hard court in 2014 São Paulo is played on clay.
Looking forward to seeing Casper Ruud in action again after his great week in Rio. He worked his way up to 133 so it will be interesting to see if he can get a new carreer high next week. It is on red clay like Rio was.
Acapulco - Jamie and Bruno are playing doubles in Acapulco. Their first rounds opponents are Croatians Cilic and Mektic. Jamie and Bruno are seeded first.

Johnson v isner getting under way now in Acapulco now on sky sports 2. Borna coric is the first winner in the men's today against Gomez 6-1 6-1
São Paulo results olivo d Cervantes 7-6 6-4
Pella d clezar 6-2 6-3
Elias d o Luz 6-2 7-5
Acapulco - currently watching Johnson v isner whilst waiting for a call from KevD in Boston before bedtime. Johnson took the first set 6-4, isner's performance was full of errors and double faults. He received a racket abuse warning after smashing it over his knee in a very Stan-like fashion. He hit his 5th double fault to drop serve in the second set. His play is now improving but Johnson is still playing well so I don't know if he can come back from this. He had a comfortable hold at 3-1 to go to 3-2
Acapulco further results
Johnson d isner 6-4 6-4
Goffin d Robert 6-1 6-2
Sadly it was another loss for Lopez who doesn't seem to be having a lot of good days together at the moment. He was defeated by LL thomson 2-6 6-3 6-3
Mannerino d fritz 3-6 7-6 6-4
Escobedo d kozlov 6-1 2-6 6-0
http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/goffin-coric-acapulco-2017-monday
São Paulo http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/olivo-sao-paulo-2017-monday
Whilst Edmund is down a set to querrey :( djoko v klizan is underway on centre. A bit early to get a sense how either is playing.
Thankfully after facing break points at the start of the second set, Kyle pulled it back and managed to hold serve :)
Djoko on the other hand not doing so well a couple of terrible errors and he's 40 -15 down on serve
Like Kyle before him in his match djoko did manage to defend the break points and still on serve in the first
Well firstly gutted for kyle who lost his match in 3 sets with querrey taking it 6-2 4-6 6-3, secondly though djoko did get the win, his match was telling. He was hot and cold, he was good in the first set but hit and cold in the second. He hit a lot of shocking errors and made bad choices. Klizan also was on and off. It wasn't a great match. It showed how far Novak has to come, he isn't playing at a high or more importantly, a consistent, level. If it is Delpo he meets in round two he won't stand a chance. I hope he can find his form. He won 6-3 7-6 http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/djokovic-cilic-acapulco-2017-tuesday
Thank you for all the updates JerryD .... Do you ever sleep??! ;):rolling:
Thank you for all the updates JerryD .... Do you ever sleep??! ;):rolling:
Not so much at the moment lol, KevD is in Boston again and the difference is making for late phone calls, also I injured my hip and thigh which means 6 hours is about the maximum I can stay in bed for before it hurts again.
Acapulco updates:.. Raffa d Zverev 6-4 6-3 the first set was closer than the second but it always felt as if it would his way. He hit some great shots and is playing despite taping on his knee. (I'll have to get some of his magic tape for mine)
young d tomic after tomic retired at the start of the second set having lost the first 7-6. What was odd about it is having retired citing nausea, tomic then played in a double match pretty soon after. I guess he didn't feel he could come back and win his single but though it was worth a try in the doubles. Certainly raising some eyebrows. He lost the doubles too.
Simon was in action which is also odd as he announced last week that he was withdrawing from Indian wells for personal reasons. I forgot he was till down to play here. He lost to theim 7-6 6-3
Delpo d tiafoe 6-4 3-6 7-6 tiafoe got better at the match went on but it never felt like he was going to get the win. Djoko will be pleased Delpo went to 3 as he plays him in the next round
Cilic d dolgopolov 6-3 4-6 6-0
Kyrgios d sela 3-6 6-3 6-3
Nishikoka d sock (champion last week) 3-6 6-2 6-1
Lorenzi d lu 4-6 6-3 6-4
Jamie and Bruno won their match but there is a separate thread for that one :)

I am recording it and then getting up earlier tomorrow to squeeze as much of it in as possible for getting on with my day lol
One of the most anticipated (at least by me!) matches coming up in Acapulco in the middle of the night...Djok and Delpo. Really would like to watch it to see how Delpo handles Djok this time around, but I think it will have to be the replay as it will be 4am before it starts! I wonder will Djok cry this time if he is beaten! ;)
I might just have to get up to watch this.

Good luck to Delpo tonight. Do hope he can pull off the W!
Kyrgios comfortably beats Donald Young 6-2 6-4 in Acapulco and is through to the QF which means we are on the verge of a Kyrgios v Djokovic match at last.
This is Nick after his match yesterday exchanging words with the boisterous Israeli fans and being confronted by wee Dudi Sela. :big grin:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5Z625_QUHU
He likes to make headlines. He was always going to get the win over young, but I hope djoko or Delpo get the better of him.
Cilic took the first set in the all Croatian tie. I suspected Coric wouldn't get the win today but I was hopeful, maybe he could still turn it around
Disappointed that querrey beat goffin today too. 6-2 6-3 and not much over an hour :( I guess goff will stay outside the top 10 next week
Delpo takes the first set against Djoko.
Delpo with break points in Djoko's last two service games but unable to convert. The crowd like a Davis Cup crowd but pretty much 50/50. Now Delpo serves up two double faults in his service game to hand Djoko the break point ..................... and Djoko breaks!
.., .............. and from 40-0, Delpo has another break point.
Delpo has had break points in the last three Djokovic service games but Djoko survives - absorbing match. Well worth getting up for! 5-2 Djokovic.
Djokovic serving for the set. 17 ball bounces before serving - shows just how tense this is. 0-40!
................ and Delpo breaks back! We're with serve again in this set. 5-4.
Now Djoko has two break points on the Delpo serve and he takes the set!
Comfortable love hold for Djoko to go 2-1 up in the third. The momentum certainly seems to have changed - Djoko with the edge now.
Love hold for Delpo take is to 3-3.
Now Delpo has 0-40 on Djoko's serve.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and Delpo breaks to go 4-3 up. Can he hang on though?
Break back point for Djokovic.
.............. and Djokovic breaks back!
Love hold takes Djokovic to 5-4. From being a break up Delpo now has to serve to stay in it.
30-40 - match point Djoko!
A huge serve to save match point.
................ and Djokovic takes it. Fascinating match - great to watch. I could do without the love in at the end though!!
Delpo is going to be a real danger in the Majors this year.

Oh Delpo - you could have helped us out there!
These match stats are so confusing - I do wish they would bring back the old format!
Djokovic not at his best yet but getting better with each match and his attitude was definitely better tonight.
Insane match, incredible level from both players. Djokovic to comeback from a break down at 3-4 in the third to win the next 3 games and the match was very impressive. Now finally we get Nick v Novak. :shades: Maybe the tough draw is what Djokovic needed to find his groove. #Nolefam are revolting about how easy Andy's draw in Dubai is in comparison. :big grin:

Very disappointed I couldn't watch Novak/Delpo - a total thriller by all accounts and pleased for everyone who did get to see it. These guys have developed have a very special rivalry - well done to Novak on coming through this time  Cannot wait for Novak/Nick's first encounter - should be a fun match in a lot of ways.

Me too, but after Delpo struggled in r1 I think I was resigned to it but obviously it was more disappointing after winning the opening set and being up in the decider

Not too surprised Djokovic got the win this time, however seems it was a really competitive match with Delpo causing him trouble again.
I managed to watch some of that match and it was obvious that Djok's game plan was to attack (relentlessly) Delpo's backhand. And it worked! It set up the ball nicely for Djok to go boom down the lines! A good match but I am disappointed for Delpo, though I suspect and hope there will be many more matches between these two.
And yes James, Djok had to work hard for the win!
A wee afterthought...Djok bounced the ball 14-18 times before every first serve! Began to get a bit monotonous after a while!
Recorded this match last night and avoided seeing the scores so I could squeeze it in about my day, some in the morning some at lunch time lol. It was a fantastic match. I was happy with the result but would have been happy the other way too. I love depo, but I also like it when djoko is playing well, he needed this win for his confidence far more than delpo. It was obvious from how nervous he was when he walked on to court, he was so fidgety at the bench too. In the first set djoko had twice as many unforced errors that. Delpo though only a couple more winners. Delpo really deserved the first set, he was so solid and hit some amazing shots. Then djoko improved in the second, playing from behind seemed to suit him. He did deserve the set but it was close.
I was glad it went into a third the match had been so close and so thrilling, it was fitting. I cared more about it being three sets than I did about who took it in the end. There were some bad shots from both but also some amazing ones. I kept changing my mind about who was going to win. I loved their embrace at the net too, they were both smiling and happy, their seemed to be a lot of respect there, as well as friendship. It was great to see a genuine moment like that. Though these guys are not strangers to great matches against each other. I really look forward to more matches between them in the future. Indian wells maybe?
Other results ... nadal was brutal against Lorenzi, 6-1 6-1 in just over an hour. He was on top form. Regardless of the great Delpo/djoko battle, nadal looks like the winner here. I am hoping for a nadal djoko final. With nick in the next round though, a long match and a late night, I wouldn't be surprised if djoko doesn't have it, but I'll be crossing my fingers. I was looking forward to a Murray fed final in Dubai though so I'm not lucky lol.
Theim d mannerino 7-5 6-3
Johnson d Escobedo 7-6 6-3
Cilic d Coric 6-3 2-6 6-3
Nishioka d Thompson 6-4 3-6 6-0
The schedule is up and it's another late night for djoko, though not surprising as it is the most anticipated match.
Cilic into the Acapulco SF with a walkover as Steve Johnson has withdrawn.
Johnson did injure himself during his match against Escobedo, I used assumed because he continued that it was less painful than it looked. It's a shame for him but I think Cilic would have been too strong anyway. Tougher for nadal who I would imagine will be his next opponent as he will be less rested than Cilic but I guess the argument could be made that nadal would be more match ready.
Nadal v nishioka - and it looked like it would be another long match, he was playing really well. It was a close match, but he has collapsed a little in the tie break at the end of the first set. Nadal was leading it 5-0 but niski got back into it a little 5-2
May be too little too late though as Raffa has 4 set points
And he only needed one of them he takes the set 7-6 despite not playing his best and nishioka playing great tennis. Some good tennis from Raffa but lots of errors. He was broken but got it back and got back on track despite 20 unforced errors
Update on Johnson, the injury sustained during the match yesterday was a twisted ankle. It happened early on in the match and he played through the pain. The real trouble this morning was with swelling and pain. I guess it's easier to ignore it if you stay on it but it's often worse the next day.
Nishioka got the break in the second set but was broken straight back leaving nadal serving at 1-2
Nadal gets a break at is serving at 3-2 he needs to back it up here
A hold each and its 4-3 nadal serving
Raffa held for 5-3 and then broke again to take the match 7-6 6-3 he had some great shots and some bad errors. I think he will look to improve for the next round. Nishioka was great though, he played really well! 31 unforced errors for nadal and not enough points won behind 2nd serve. He will need to be better against Cilic
Kyrgios beat Djokovic 7-6(9) 7-5. Immense serving from Nick both first and second and with 25 aces, 41 winners, only 14 UEs. Djokovic played well and didn't face a BP until the last game when he just collapsed with 3 weak FH errors to give Nick 3MPs and he took the first one. Nick has beaten Nadal, Federer & now Djokovic in their first meetings :shades: but not Andy.
Acapulco Semis:
Kyrgios v Querrey
Cilic v Nadal
Just got up to see this. Great news for Andy's ranking points
Excellent news. I love Sir A being No 1, and want him to hold onto it as long as possible. Plus I don't like Djokovic, but do like Kyrgios, so it's a win win for me.
not particularly a fan of Keven the teenage brat, so shame nole lost but agree its good for Andy and at least noel did the decent thing in dumping dull potro out the draw before losing

Nick certainly got up for this win in a stunning display of power tennis:,25 aces, 41 winners and just 14 unforced errors. Remains to be seen if Kygrios can grow up a bit and become more committed/consistent but obviously has the talent. He has now though beaten Nadal,Federer and Djokovic in their first meetings. A blow for Djokovic and assists Andy obviously.

Well done Nick  I know he's a bit of a brat, but I can forgive that because I just love his self-belief. So many times we see Djoko (and previously Fed and Rafa) get a cheap win because the oppo plays the aura rather than the ball and rolls over. Kudos to players like Nick who refuse to do that. And anyway, just as it takes all types of people to make an interesting world, it takes all types of players to make an interesting tour - I love angelic Goffin, but it would be pretty boring if all players were like him - there's room for nasty Nick :big grin:

Well done Nick!:cheer::cheer:
Don't mind going against the grain and say I was really disappointed and for a number of reasons. Firstly I wanted a djoko v nadal final. Secondly it wasn't a great match to watch, firstly the faster courts see a lot of aces and not much chance for either to get into the other's serve, personally I prefer the slower ones. These courts do benefit people like nick and Sam. It was rough for the whole match to come down to an unforced error from djoko on the breaker (I don't like breakers because they often feel a bit like a chance), and 3 unforced errors in one game at the end of the second. Though I am glad nick won the point that won the match rather than it coming down to 5 unforced errors.
But more than the loss, I'm disappointment that djoko collapsed under the pressure at the end. It's so sad to see that his confidence is still low. I prefer the game with all players playing well, and that service game suggests more tough times ahead for Djoko, he very nearly double faulted to lose it. At least it hit the tape because that would have been worse.
I was happy to see that despite his loss he waved and thanked the crowd and stopped to sign autographs. I wanted a win for nadal here before so though it seems most matches aren't going my way (lost theim last night :( ) hopefully the semis and the finals can go the way I want for Rafa. Hoping for sam and Raffa in the final.
So Young Nick beat Old Nick! ;)
I've just watched the replay of Nick and Nole. Some awesome play from both of them and I couldn't quite believe how Nole simply folded in the final game to lose his serve and the match. Up until then, it was a very close match. I am glad Nick won as I do like him and I would love to see a Nick/Rafa final (sorry Jerry!). :flowers: :sofa:
Audio (http://www.abiertomexicanodetenis.com/audios/2017/conferencia_Ndjokovic_Mar_02.m4a) of Djokovic's press conference, all 25 seconds. He is not happy and understandably so as on that form (other than the last game) he would have beaten anyone else in the field including Nadal plus he had a stinker of a draw in comparison to his.
He is right that nick deserved to win. Yes Novak made mistakes but nick was able to benefit from them by not making any of his own. Sometimes it does come down to just that, waiting for the error and not making your own. I guess it seems it was frustration that got to him in the end rather than lack of belief. Doesn't make a difference to the result but maybe to the rest of the season.
#Nolefam are revolting after Nick's latest instagram post. ;)

That's really clever. Took me (thicko that I am) a few moments to work it out!
Nick couldn't repeat his blistering form, losing to Querrey in the semi to set up a Rafa v Sam final. Given his annihilation of Cilic in the semis, my money's on Rafa for this one.

I saw this match and say, Sam deserved it as he played very well, not just with his serve, his winner count was quite high.
Watched the second set, Sam played well, as he has done all week. Certainly deserved to win.
No disrespect to Rafa but very happy that Sam got the win. Had all intentions of getting up to was this match but overslept grr! 😁

Agree with you. It's been a good weeks tennis, wins for both Murray brothers, Federer, Wawrinka and Djokovic going out early and Nadal not wining either, keeps the rankings in a healthy state.
pleasantly surprised well done big Sam
Of course, Andy could draw him in the second round too!
But it wouldn't be "another" second round. Delpo in the second round followed by Querrey in the third, that would be brutal for anyone. :nailbiter:
It's been forgotten (although not by Andy when he talks about the AO) in all the handwringing over the defeat by M.Zverev in Australia but worth recalling how brilliantly Andy played in beating Querrey in the third round in straight sets. Sam was serving big and hitting huge FHs and BHs but Andy's defence that day was incredible even by his high standards. Dip into the thread for that match to see some of the comments, several "King of the Lobs". ;)
Nadal 0/6 on BPs in the second set, ouch!
I just think we should move on from the AO. There were clear reasons for that loss. He was physically and mentally shot (I still believe that), then if he was incubating shingles as well, it's a wonder he won any matches.
This comment from the BBC report has really riled me. Goodness help us if for the forceable future, any loss is going to be the start of a malaise. Murray has always lost the odd inexplicable match, and probably always will. In Norfolk we have an expression NFN - normal for Norfolk. In AM's case it should be NFAM
"Murray's form in Dubai this week suggests not only has he got over his bout of shingles, but also that the defeat to Mischa Zverev at the Australian Open is no indication of a deeper malaise."
Sorry if this comment is in the wrong place.

Simon and Ferrer have both withdrawn but that still leaves DelPo outside at #33 since he will drop to #35 in the rankings. Of course there is still time for another withdrawal before the main draw at 11pm on Tuesday
