Hi everyone,

I'm picking up the hints, so here goes - new thread for possible evening meal on Saturday 8th April. I am happy to have a go at organising this assuming there is enough interest and that already appears to be the case. Please let me know in this thread if you are serious about joining in so I can see how many people I am catering for. That's not me personally, of course, as I certainly won't be cooking. I am not really acquainted with restaurants in Rouen so will need to do some research, hopefully in person, but won't be there for at least 10 days so there will be a slight delay in naming a location. I would appreciate any hints from past organisers and hopeful participants on anything I need to consider and I wil do my best to meet everyone's needs. Ample wine and beer are already top of the list. OK, ready, steady, go - sign up now

Hi everyone,
. I would appreciate any hints from past organisers and hopeful participants on anything I need to consider and I wil do my best to meet everyone's needs.

:GBflag: :party::party::GBflag:

We went for a set menu as that made everyone's food bill the same - and one with lots of choice to ensure we suited a range of food tastes (last 2 UK meals have been in Italian restaurants so that seems to go down well- though you may want to sample something of a more local flavour as part of the experience. Each table sorted their bill for ease of payment. Ally kept a spreadsheet of who was going.

goldfish - I know you have some knowledge of the area and I just wondered if you could provide an estimate of cost for basic stuff in Rouen ... eg. a cup of coffee, beer, glass of wine, breakfast / dinner out etc. Just trying to work out spending money which is tight. Thank you.

Hi, this gives some idea. It includes Paris, but it would be too complicated to separate it out.

Caro, sorry not to have replied earlier but been busy. I'm hoping Teresa's post following yours answered some of your questions. I am going to Normandy at the weekend and will note the prices you've requested so I can give you an accurate answer.

If anyone else has any things they would like me to check out for them in the very limited time I have there, post on here and I will do my best.

Hopefully everyone has sorted their DC tickets now and will be able to confirm their participation at the forum meal in Rouen.

We have investigated a large number of restaurants in the city and have chosen a French bistrot, reasonably priced with our own private room. This is located on the first floor but there are toilets on this floor so I hope this isn't a problem for anyone. The restaurant is situated in the old market square by the Joan of Arc church.

http://english.lesmaraichers.com/

There are 3 course set menus for groups and I have opted for the cheapest one at €19.50 (£17). If we include drinks - an aperitif, a bottle of wine for 3, coffee or tea - that will be €29.50 (£25.75). We can decide whether to do that on the night but they do require confirmation of numbers and our menu choices a few days beforehand. I will coordinate that nearer the time. I am currently discussing a vegetarian main course option with them, hoping for something more interesting than the plateful of vegetables that was initially suggested. This is the link to the menu in English -

http://english.lesmaraichers.com/index.php/cards-menus/menus-of-group

Agreed it is not extensive but none of the restaurants we looked at offered more choice for such a large group and some restricted us to just one option. There are plenty of places nearby for pre/after dinner drinks.

I hope this is OK. We are currently a group of 40.

Don't think the French really get vegetarianism - years ago on a uni field trip the vegetarian option where we were staying was to remove all the meat leaving a plate of mashed potato! We took the poor girl out for crepes afterwards! After a few wines she was even less bothered.

Hope it gets sorted though!

As promised a few price guidelines in euros for Rouen -

Espresso 1.60
Americano 1.80 -2.90
Café au lait 2.80 - 3.20
Tea 2.80 - 3.40 (nb they tend to use Liptons yellow label, very weak, suggest taking your own if you care)
Hot chocolate 3 - 3.30

Fruit juice 25cl 3.30 - 3.50
Coke 3.30 - 3.50
Lemonade, still water 25cl 2.70 - 3, 1L 5.70
San Pellegrino 25cl 2.9, 1L 5.70
Heineken, draught/1664 15cl 2.30, 25cl 3 - 3.20, 33cl 4.40, 50 cl 5.20 - 6
Stella 25 cl 3.10 - 3.30, 33 cl 4.10, 50 cl 5.70

Cider 37.5 cl 5.20

Breakfasts - didn't see that many advertised but French often just have an espresso + plain croissant or pain au chocolat
So a few samples -

Express + croissant 2.60
Hot drink + croissant + pain au chocolat 4.50
Hot drink + croissant or pain au chocolat + juice 4.50
Cafe de la gare breakfast 5.30

Nice place for more expensive breakfast Restaurant le vieux carré 9.90 or 12.90 with cooked breakfast
http://www.hotel-vieux-carre.com/
Lots of boulangeries for buying croissants etc from 90 cents

Filled baguettes from boulangeries e.g. Paul 3 -5

Menu prices
Basic 10 upwards
Croque Monsieur/quiche/omelette/burger + chips + salad 8.70 - 12.50

Café de la gare - opposite Astrid, simple but was OK for a cup of tea, waiter served on Sunday when the city is so much quieter (shops and many restaurants closed) breakfast 5.30, salad 12, sandwich 5
Bistrot Gourmet near Astrid 2 course menu 13.5, 3 course 16.90

There is a small shopping centre opposite Kindarena with some eating places and places to buy filled baguettes but on Sunday these are closed. I think there was a small supermarket near the Astrid but certainly a few small shops/cafés. Small supermarket near the Joan of Arc church plus others but can't remember where. Plenty of eating places on the main shopping street and all adjoining roads.

Hope this helps a little.

It's make your mind up time - I'd like to fill in my spreadsheet for meal choices so I can notify the restaurant by the end of March. Here's the English menu as a reminder - Retour du Marche 19.50 choices only please.

http://english.lesmaraichers.com/index.php/cards-menus/menus-of-group

I have asked the owner to give us a suitable vegetarian option for the main course and she responded that she will speak to the chef who will prepare something. However, the actual dish wasn't given so I'm afraid you might just have to trust me on this. I will sort any problems on the night, if that's OK.

It might be useful if you could indicate whether you would prefer drinks to be included or not although I am pretty sure we can decide on the night too.

I have removed stell from the list assuming that she is definitely not coming now and also have a ? for Roy and party. We will be either 38 or 42.

Thank you.

Hi goldfish, sorry to be a pain but I know you said the restaurant was looking at a vegetarian option for the main course, does this also apply to the starter? Camembert is not vegetarian so I'm wondering if that means no starter for the veggies

Not if it's made with rennet.

JerryD

A lot of cheese is. But traditionally to be classed as Camembert it is made using animal rennet which comes from the stomachs of calves, lambs or goats

Our final number for the forum dinner is 39. Thanks to you all for getting me your menu choices by the deadline as that has enabled me to send them off to the restaurant in plenty of time. I've already received a reply accepting the list, no questions asked. Just to show how indecisive I can be, I couldn't work out whether to go for 7.30 or 8 so opted for 7.45 with the proviso that we can meet and greet in the room earlier. As noted previously there are plenty of places nearby for pre-dinner drinks if required.

Looking forward to meeting new faces - I have met some of you already - and to having another great DC weekend. Allez les rouges :GBflag:
