Match point Berdych. Not something you write very often these days. Lost both of them now.

Match point Federer:-(

Fed stole that in the end!!Turned out to be a good match after all. But Berdych must be hurting!

Caro
30-03-2017, 21:50
Oh Berdy :crying::crying: Had a match point too and to end like that

That crowd though ... disgusting! I actually don't dislike Fed the way I used to but it's the utter unadulterated worship from crowds and the disrespect of other players that I really can't stomach

Bardot
30-03-2017, 21:52
Berdych hit a brilliant 2nd serve to save MP at 4-5 but lightning didn't strike twice and it was a horrendous 2nd serve on the second MP and sadly everyone watching knew it was coming.

JAMES4578
30-03-2017, 22:06
Same old Berdy, a bit of a choke at the end! To be fair some impressive tennis from him when he got going but ultimately not when it mattered, though Fed did give him a bit of a lifeline at 5-3 .Wasn't really Roger's most consistent performance but was still able to produce on some key points and make Thomas doubt.

Federer agrees. ;) This from his press conference.

On the last point i thought wow, DF, really Tomas? You are too nice, I don't deserve this

JerryD
30-03-2017, 23:40
Seriously? Well that's not even funny mr fed. Way to rub salt in to berdy's wounds. Well I came back just in time to see a nice moment of sportsmanship, in opposition to Fed's remark. Rushed in put zverev v kyrgios on. It had already started. A few minutes into half watching it form the kitchen whilst unpacking i saw sachsa hit a serve that was called out. Nick immediately told him to challenge it. Sachsa s did and the court was overturned. He thanked nick and gave him the thumbs up. It was a nice moment. And a different side of nick to the one we are always shown. I have to admit, it surprised me.

JerryD
31-03-2017, 00:11
Well tiredness and fast serving and unreturnable serves have made this a tough match for me to get into. Shopping is away KevD should be enroute to the airport and im going to bed.

There wasn't much in it until 4-4 in the first set. Nothing really specially but nick got the break and took the first set 6-4 second set has been more interesting. Less short points and unreturnavles so far. Sachsa not playing his best tennis but saved break points to hold at two all in the second set. It's 2-3 on serve in the second and I'm off to bed

Sascha saves two match points but Nick takes it. A very friendly exchange at the net which was nice to see - these two are certainly the future. So we get the Kyrgios/Fed match that we were denied at Indian Wells.

Kyrgios wins 6-4 6-7(9) 6-3 and what a match it was! Hot shot after hot shot after hot shot, so many highlights and there were plenty dramas (Zverev saved 3MPs in the 2nd set TB and each one brilliantly). The future of entertaining tennis is assured. :shades:

Only downside was Nick appeared to be flexing his knee towards the end of the match.

Fergus Murphy gave Kyrgios a time violation.

Kyrgios hit two tweeners in the one point which he won.

Enjoyed the second and third set much more than up to 4-4 in the first in the nick v Sachsa match. Great to see the future of the game. Though Andy & co will hold them off do a while yet.

Nadal absolutely storming through fognini. Took the first set 6-1 and at deuce on the first game of the second set it looks like he's going to break at the start of this set. Only 33 minutes played

Raffa was incredible on serve. Lost about 9 points on serve the whole match. He held his nerve even when he failed to take opportunities he had created. At one point he even kicked off his shoe running for a ball but it didn't distract him. So great to see him playing this well again. The second set was a long one but a good one. I really hope that Raffa can take this tournie for the first time :)

Was an awesome match.

I admire Fed for how he has changed his game and the way he is playing BUT his fans........

I really wanted Nick to win but the fans got to him. He seems to be trying to act better and so I hope this doesn't put him back a step. He lost the match because of the disrespect given to him by the fans and his reaction to it. Well maybe he would have lost without that, but we will never know. He deserved to have silence as he served and during the rallies but thats never going to happen with Fed fans, especially when the match is so close. Ugh!!!!

This smacks of Djokovic fans at RG in the final. Neither Federer nor Djokovic would have the grace or class to ask them to be quiet as I have seen Andy do to his fans.

Arggh, so disappointed I couldn't watch this - I knew Fed/Nick would be a show stopper. So hacked off that their IW encounter, which I could have watched, was cancelled. Oh well, hopefully many more battles between them to come - 2 of the most breathtaking players in the game, love watching both. Congrats to Fed for finding a way through, and better luck next time Nick. Can only see Fed winning the final - he's a new player in his matches against Rafa - high loopy shots into his backhand no longer hurt him. Tbh only players I can see stopping Fed are Andy and Nole once they are back to their very best - fingers x'd that's soon. (and E. Donskoy, of course ).

I've just watched the highlights through again and hadn't realised when I was watching live just how pro Fed Peter Fleming was in his commentary. 01-04-2017, 11:44
It was a great match (just watched it this morning after recording it). Both played really well, such a shame for nick that it went the way it did. I wanted him to come through it. The crowd were awful (again), they were bad during the Berdy match but this one was worse. Probably because this one felt closer, maybe no one really believed Berdy would come through. Still not the worst I've seen. That was the US open final in 2015 between fed and djoko. There were truly awful. Djoko was getting booed everytime he won a point. He really got my respect that day when he just held his nerve despite a crowd that made tennis in general look bad. They even booed when he won. Wonder if this one would have gone that far i the result had gone the other way. Really hoping for a nadal win tomorrow, he has never won here before and it would do wonders for his confidence. Leading to a more competitive clay season. When hopefully Andy, djoko and milos will all be back on form too.

Odd answer from Nadal. Is he questioning players honesty about injuries? He doesn't have a monopoly. ;)

Q. Fabio seems to have some injuries or pain on his elbow. In this tournament we missed Novak, Andy, Gasquet, Monfils, many top players. Do you think it's coincidence or some explanation on these injuries?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know if Novak is injury. He's playing Davis Cup this week. I'm not sure if he's injured.

I don't know if Fabio is injury. You can ask him later. I don't know.

Gasquet is not injured. He had appendicitis. Happens to a lot of people. It's not an injury. Happened to me, too.

Yeah, Andy, I don't know what's going on. Is obvious that he is not playing here, a tournament that he likes, so something is going on.

But at the same time, is obvious that it's coincidence today, but overall is not a coincidence. When you are playing most of the time on hard surfaces I think it's tougher for the body. It's more aggressive.

Odd answer from Nadal. Is he questioning players honesty about injuries? He doesn't have a monopoly. ;)

I don't think he's questioning the injuries, he's listing them and then adding that it's a result of playing on hard surfaces so much (not sure how hardcourt gives a player appendicitis, so he's just thrown that in for good measure). Whatever do you think his proposed remedy would be? - I'll take a wild guess at playing more on clay ;) He's obviously not content with just the 3 dirt masters compared to nada on grass. If hc is as tough on the body as Rafa claims, it's definitely the grass season that should be extended as an alternative (and not just because it's Andy's best surface :p)

Or be responsible for elbow injuries. Nadal has also suggested that the net should be raised to combat big servers. So all matches should be played outdoors, on clay over a volleyball net, perfect for moonballers. :p ;)

Knew this would be the result so at least made money out of it. Fed has to be a robot, he's rampant

I'm not writing Andy off yet! I can't see Fed keeping this level up for the whole season.

I wouldn't bank on it. He will pick and choose when he wants to play.

Fed looks like he could beat anyone at the moment. He seems to be playing better than ever.

Fed wins 6-3, 6-4 and in some imperious form, thought he was likely winner but only real question was if he was fresh enough and certainly answered that. Nadal had fleeting chances but just couldn't do enough. Certainly agree that Roger looking main threat to Andy no1 ranking right now, hopefully up for challenge!

Fed on a roll, that's a scary thought. Not expecting to see too much of him in the clay court season though, he's gunning for another Wimby title so I don't expect him to be getting much red stuff on his socks

Oh Lordy, did he do that? Must confess I switched off the minute he won. Whilst I will always admire the tennis he plays, I'll start to get grumpy with him if I watch his "modest" speeches

Roger Federer to Brad Gilbert: "I probably won't play any clay court events except the French. I need a rest. My body needs healing."

I wasn't writing Andy off, just stating the challenger in the strongest position and on form at the moment is now Roger, what happens of clay will be very interesting, can Andy Nole or Rafa win multiple titles

Feds so modest isnt he

Usually I watch , no matter whose playing or where , but havent felt that way so far this year
Cant wait for Andys return , have never been so disinterested in tennis

Yes, and talking of plans for the next couple of years, I thought it telling that Roger did not make any promises or commitment to come back to Miami next year...instead he 'would see all his fans somewhere in the world', or something like that. I may be wrong, but that's how it came across to me.
Although it was a good match, I felt it lacked much of the thrilling tenseness of old. The Kyrgios match was way more exciting.(IMO anyway!) It seems the 'next gen' v the 'old timers' are producing the really tense, close fought matches now.

I just can't see Fed keeping up this blistering form for a whole season. I think he will dip in and out as it pleases him but probably not enough to take him to the number one ranking - unless both Novak and Andy have a very lean year, which, of course, is always a possibility. I'm sure Fed would love to be number one again but I think his main focus is on winning Majors, particularly Wimbledon.

themass15

Absolutely Wimbledon will be top of his agenda

I agree - I found the Kyrgios/Fed match much more exciting than the Rafa/Fed match. Probably because I thought Nick had a realistic chance of winning while I didn't really think Rafa had.

Both my OH and I feel the same. This was meant to be with a quote about not being interested in terms most of the time at the moment

Me too. I trust my dis-interest has not disappeared long term. I get depressed when Andy loses but nothing compared to how I feel when Fed wins right now; I know he's amazing and I should be able to embrace it but so hope Andy and Novak (or anyone!) can come strong to knock him off that cocky grin off his face! It's a tall order!!

One would assume that Becker has had a heavy night on the sauce. I also assume he is hacked off because Murray has beaten him for weeks at No 1. Some of these former players are coming over as real tools.

Becker always did - come across as a tool, I mean!

Yep, I never liked Becker when he was playing and that hasn't changed!

As for Fed, utterly amazing what he is achieving, he seems to have completely re-invented himself and improved his game still further .... BUT the world no's 1 and 2 are both injured and haven't been at their best so far this year. Now I'm not saying either of them would have beaten Fed in this form but we'll never know will we? He certainly has turned his rivalry on its head v Rafa which doesn't make me happy!
I have to say the crowd were despicable especially against Kyrgios, not Fed's fault of course .... but he does need to have a serious word with his wife!

I know! She actually heckled nick when he changed his racquet even though they often do at certain times. But then she heckled Stan and called him names in London one year. So I guess it's no surprise. Though it is one thing to support your favourite, it is disrespectful and it only makes the crowd worse

Well class and Becker are not two words that often go together these days.

But Classless and Bobo now that's a different matter.

I can answer that for you Boris listen very carefully He's busy gently exercising his torn elbow.
Polishing his T_W_O Olympic Golds......
And basking in the warmth of being at No.1 longer than you ever did while doing it.

By the way you about as good at tweeting as you are at Poker.
Rubbish.

Ps. I don't have a twitter account but anyone who does please fell free to copy and paste.

"Each to their own?" Is that the best he's got? The irony is he was coaching a player we call Djoker.
Although there are usually two jokers in a pack I guess.
Just can't wait until he's sat at my table again. Boy will I get under his skin.
The other ironic thing is Lynne and I have just got in from playing poker, and....
We came 1st and 2nd.
Oh boy I still can't believe that's his best shot.
Thank you so much if there's anything we can ever do for you just ask.
