The Japanese are thinking way ahead, as they are now looking for Japanese people who can speak English. I've read, all the future volunteers, who can't speak English, will have learn our language by watching Fawlty Towers.
Ticket prices will, probably, start at about £175.
The Japanese are using wood from the trees of Sarawak, Borneo, to build their new Olympic stadium. They've now been accused of deforestation and human-rights violations, because of it.

As Paris and Los Angeles got confirmed as hosts for the 2024 and 2028 hosts by the IOC, yesterday, fresh claims emerged surrounding the alleged buying of votes by bid teams for the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The IOC has now changed the bidding process. For the 2032 Olympics, and onwards, two or three cities will be chosen from a shortlist. Each of those cities will then have a one year campaign to win it. The IOC won't decide the 2032 winner until 2025.

The 2020 Olympic and Paralympic organizing committee will be trying to make sure that ticket scalping doesn't happen, which often leaves to empty seats and the fans either miss out or have to pay more money. Tickets are expected to go on sale during the spring of 2019 and, though the prices haven't been released, the average price is expected to be Y7,700 per ticket (about £51 per ticket) and between Y25,000 and Y150,000 per ticket (about £167 to £1,005 per ticket) for the opening ceremony.

The Faroe Islands want to break away from Denmark and become a country in their own right and try to win medals for themselves and not for Denmark. They're hoping the IOC will recognise them in time for the Olympics.
North and South Korea have now confirmed that they will compete together at the Tokyo Olympics and will be bidding to host the 2032 one. Thomas Bach has welcomed the news.

I know plenty of other sporting events have taken place without spectators since covid first hit us. But the Olympics are such an iconic event, where spectators play such a major part, that I seriously wonder whether they should take place. Can you imagine London 2012 without fans?
JAMES4578

Even if not the same spectacle, would not want to lose the Olympics all together and see some potential medalists miss their chance. More important for some sports like athletics ,swimming cycling and Gymnastics for instance. Not really the pinnacle in tennis even if there have been some great olympic matches and obviously important moments for Andy. There may be some spectators but will need to see on that one.

I'm really torn over this. I completely agree that it's such a carnival of sport and spectators so important to that atmosphere but then also agree with James that it's the pinnacle event for many sports people who have to wait so long for their shot at glory. Ugh. Such a shame to be in this dilemma. Maybe the Japanese can come up with some innovative way of creating a special atmosphere without fans. Feel sorry for them that they've had expense of games but not the ticket sales and boost to economy.

Sadly Jade Jones went out in R1, defeated by Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin, the bronze medallist in Rio, from the Olympic Refugee team.
Briton Lizzie Deignan finished 11th in the cycling road race. Gold to Anna Kiesenhofer, who takes a surprise victory by more than one minute from Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten, who collects silver, and Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini is home in third for the bronze.

So that is all for the most successful US gymnast of all time in today's team final.
We'll let you know as soon as we get confirmation of exactly what has caused Simone Biles to pull out. Biles leaves the arena after scoring 13.766 on the vault in the first rotation - her lowest score on that apparatus in her Olympics career.
All three Russians who vaulted scored higher, as did her USA team-mates.
Simone Biles is out of the all around team final. Was this massive vault and botched landing where she picked up a competition ending niggle?
More from@jrflipfest (https://twitter.com/jrflipfest), who says Simone Biles' scratch is not physical injury related. “The coach has apparently said it’s a mental issue Simone is having.”

Fabulous Gold in the freestyle, some great results!
I am loving the radio commentary in the mornings. Jonathan Overend and Steve Bunce in particular are so entertaining and informative in the taekwondo and boxing,[not disciplines I normally follow.] But what I like the most is hearing the backstory of the athletes, the dedication, hard work, commitment and sheer devotion that goes into their preparations and the support from families and coaches. Bradley Sindon {boxing}and Charley Davison {taekwondo} are 2 names that come to mind. I end up almost feeling as if I know them and I'll seek them out when they are in action. The sheer joy of the winners is so uplifting, but equally the despair and desolation of the losers is gut-wrenching, both scenarios always reduce me to tears. Charley is boxing tomorrow, she's a mum of 3!
I can't agree about Steve Bunce, he's the Jonathan Pearce of contact sport commentating.

Fantastic to wake up to another golden morning, huge congratulations to the triathlon and swimming teams. I'm loving these new mixed events. It gives the competitors another shot at a medal and are really good to watch. In the pool, the male and female swimmers can go in any order, men can do a leg against women, so never really know how things are going to even out until the very end, so exciting and have to get strategy just right. Hope the new mixed 4x400m in athletics is same format.

Team GB are absolutely killing it!!!!!!!!! Very cool to see.
Team Canada had their first "male" medal yesterday, bronze in 100m sprint, but all the other 10 medals are by women. We've got two teams vying for beach volleyball so fingers crossed for them, and the women are in the footie semi but face the US - boo!

It's understood that Simone Biles will be taking part in the Beam Final, her last chance to go for an Olympic Gold at these games. Fingers crossed all goes well for her.

I was wondering what had happened to all the Beeb channels during the Olympics. It will be the same for Paris Olympics too. It sucks.
Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/jul/25/bbc-olympics-coverage-misses-events-after-selling-tv-rights) - BBC Olympics coverage misses events after loss of TV rights
During the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, the BBC was able to offer dozens of free livestreams of different sports, revolutionising the way British viewers watched the games and providing much needed publicity to niche events that would not normally have enjoyed their moment in the public eye.
This is no longer possible, however, after Olympics organisers decided to sell the European television rights for the games to the US company Discovery in a £920m deal. Discovery has in turn put the vast majority of the coverage behind a paywall, accessible only through their Eurosport channels or on the new £6.99-a-month streaming service Discovery+.
Although the deal with the BBC was announced in 2016 (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/feb/02/olympics-bbc-discovery-deal), this is the first summer Olympics where it has come into effect, meaning much of the British public was not aware of the changes until now.
Under the deal with the International Olympic Committee, Discovery is still required to make some of the coverage available on a free-to-air channel. Discovery decided to stick with the BBC for this element in the UK, in part to avoid a public relations disaster (https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/oct/12/bbc-olympics-discovery-rights-eurosport), allowing the national broadcaster to buy a limited amount of coverage.
As part of this sub-licensing arrangement, the BBC can show a maximum of two live events at one time, through one television channel and a second feed provided through the red button service and online. Everything else requires viewers to switch to Eurosport or Discovery+, meaning many sports are simply not covered live by the BBC.

The coverage has been dreadful, Cazza. It's not as simple as just getting Discovery for a month (which I have). When the BBC covered the games they would show things with British interest/medal hope in an organised way, whereas hunting through Discovery + is a nightmare. Even if you do know what you want to watch, scrolling through is a real pain and there's often no commentary. I think it's diabolical that the IOC have sold out the games, totally goes the spirit of making the event accessible, especially to youngsters. I fear this is the future, however - £920m for the rights - national broadcasters can't compete. It's a disgrace.
Yup, the BBC covered the games so much better in an interesting way. Crazy that they are only allowed 2 channels in the deal. Hopefully with all the complaints they can get another channel or two for Paris.
I tried to watch a sport on Eurosport player, and it would not let me fast forward to just view part of it. There was no way I wanted to wait 2 hours to get to the bit I wanted!!!! Have managed to go back with a live one today. I have found others on Eurosport player with no commentary too.
I am wondering if they have put the swimming finals on in the morning Japanese time for US TV. They are usually later in the day in other Olympics and were put in the evening in Rio specifically for US TV.
edit. Yep early swimming finals due to US TV - https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1067674/fina-back-holding-swimming-finals-in-morning-at-tokyo-2020-olympics

First Team Eventing Gold for GB in 49 years, well done to Oliver Townend, Laura Collett and Tom McEwen! Tom has also taken the silver in the individual event, great stuff! Gold went to German Julia Krajewski.
Whilst I have Eurosport and a free deal with Discovery plus not everyone has the opportunity and pity BBC can offer so little live coveage, does not look like that will be changing soon though. Whilst I can navigate Discovery Plus ok not ideal with the commentary and felt that the picture quality not as good as on the Eurosport channels. The commentators I think better on BBC but obviously do not always have your favourite.

Fab silver for Keely Hodgkinson in the 800 metres behind Athing Mu of the States. Unfortunately though Jemma Reekie, having looked set to win Bronze, faded at the end and was 4th. Even if not what she might have hoped for and some others possibly expected still great in the circumstances for Simone Biles to win the Bronze, well done!
Fab for GB to get the Golds in the sailing, whilst maybe a bit disappointing for Laura and Jason the Silvers still impressive in the Team Events!
Jack Laugher performed pretty well to win the Bronze, even if he could not match the Chinese Divers - now has the full set of medals from 2 Olympics, well done!

How are GBR doing?
Great Britain now have 59 medals following Galal Yafai's boxing gold, with another medal guaranteed to come through team-mate Lauren Price.
For comparison, Team GB had 60 medals at this stage in Rio and 58 in London. Only London 1908 (146 medals), Rio 2016 (67) and London 2012 (65) have produced more medals. The 19 golds won so far fall short of London's 25 and Rio's 24 at this stage.
There are more opportunities in the last 2 days - Tom Daley, team show jumping, 10,000, Ladies 4 X 400, Cycling Mens Madison, Keirin and Sprint.

Laura Kenny will carry the GBR flag at the closing ceremony which begins at 12noon BST.
BBC Sport website will have live coverage of the closing ceremony from around midday, TV coverage of which begins at 11:55 BST.

Just to clarify (because in my previous but one post the medals table hadn't been updated) per the BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/olympics/52501716):-
The gold medals won by Jason Kenny and Lauren Price this morning have taken GB's total haul to 65 medals, equalling their performance as hosts nine years ago and making Tokyo their second-most successful overseas Olympics after Rio 2016.
Britain won 67 medals at the Rio Games - finishing second in the medal table - and UK Sport had set a medal target range of between 45 and 70 medals in Japan.
In 2016, GB became the first country to improve on its medal tally in the Olympics after being the host. Now, they've become the first to equal or win more medals at each of the next two Games.

What a marvellous achievement to finish 4th. Only superpowers and host nation did better. I'm so pleased the games went ahead - different to other years but still so much to enjoy and admire and I'm sure it's boosted people's spirits. The cherry on the cake would have been a medal for Andy but just seeing him so animated and pumped up was fantastic - there's still plenty of fire in that belly.

Great Jason Kenny had a win in Tokyo after some earlier challenges, real pity Laura had that crash but both finish with a Gold and a Silver. GB certainly done well in the circumstances and a few hopes had injury woes. To match the London total no mean feat, though 7 more Gold in London. Beyond that enjoyed watching a number of top performers the Games (obviously a few stars retired since 2016 but some new ones), whilst obviously it was not quite the same certainly enjoyed the games and glad they went ahead too. Know there was a fair bit of opposition in Tokyo but commentators seem to think attitudes changed somewhat. pity that there was another covid wave in Japan of cbviously, Paralympics start 24 August.
one benefit of course for Paris 2024 will be the time zone for Tv vewing.

A great games of course for Sarah Storey winning 3 Gold and taking 17th medal overall ,once of our new stars was swimmer Reece Dunne who won 5 medals. Seen a fair bit of it myself. Whilst bit of a disappointment was a silver for Hewett/Reid whilst Gordon edged out Alfie to take the Bronze in the singles. Unfortunately Hewett's future uncertain due to elegibility rules.
