View Full Version : MONTE CARLO 2017, R3: Andy v Albert Ramos Vinolas ESP - Thursday 10.00 am

Andy's next opponent is 15th seed Albert Ramos Viñolas ESP WR 24 (=CH).
They've not played each other before so the H2H is 0-0.
So what shall we call the Spaniard?
ARV
Vino?
I think I know which gets my vote ...
:wino:
First match on Court Rainier III
Whereas this will only be Andy's second match on clay this year, Ramos Vinolas played the full South American swing on clay after Australia. Reached the QF in Ecuador, QF in Buenos Aires, SF in Rio (losing to Thiem) and the final in Sao Paulo (losing to Cuevas). He also played Marrakech last week losing to eventual winner Coric in the QF. He's 11-5 on clay this year. At age 29, he's at a career high of 24.
Another possible banana skin then.
To quote Jamie who had a mini rant on twitter about underestimating players
Jamie Murray @jamie_murray
Why are people (many in tennis) incredulous at thought of player rank 45 competing/potentially winning vs top player? These guys are good!
Any player playing on the @ATPWorldTour these days has an amazing ability to play this game we like to call...tennis.
The Very Best of Luck Andy!!!:thumbup:

Quite anxious about this one. Not been able to watch so far this week as we've been entertaining the grandchildren. Love them to bits but need Andy to win so I can watch live tomorrow. Going to be a weekend of binge catching up already plus hoping Fed Cup is available somewhere.
I would like to see Sir Andy win this in another straight sets victory, but I think it might be a bit of a toughie. But, Sir Andy should come through it.
As to what we should call him, I would also go with Vino.
All the best of luck, Andy

Looking forward to this one. Vino has lots of recent experience (and success) on clay as Bardot lists above. Should give us a further insight into Andy's recovery and form.
At least we no longer have to dread Andy's lack of success on the red mucky stuff, compared with a couple of years ago......
All the best Andy! I'll be watching.
Tough opening game. Good hold. 1-0
On the 5th BP Andy takes it. 20 minutes for 2 games! 2-0
At least it was a short game to be broken back. 2-1
A volley of Fs at the changeover from Andy.
Such a lot of hard work for so little reward so far Stay focused Andy!! Slog it out!

*** Pedant Alert *** The commentators keep referring to the tournament being held in "the principality" referring, of course, to Monaco. In fact the Monte Carlo Country club, where the event is held, is just outside the Monaco boundary in the French district of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France... (I've been there, lovely place....)
Back to the tennnis!
No distraction from the spectator, as Sir Andy wins the first game.

Ah well. A useful match practice after injury and preparation for the big one in Paris.

Ramos Vinolas was tough opponent on the clay, however most disappointing Andy lost from 4-0 up in the decider, still sure he will improve as the weeks progress.
I only got a stream working 5 minutes ago so didn't see enough.... physically struggling? Injured?
Vino was too good, but Sir Andy should have won it.
A fine win for ARV in his first match against our no 1! He's a good player (although I'd never heard of him before today) but feel Andy let it slip at 4-1.
Andy not running for the drop shot at 15-0 in the final game was so unlike him. Remember Andy being 4-0 up against Haase at the US Open and then losing the next 4 games but then he went on to win but I doubt he's ever lost from that position before.
Losing from 4-0, something went wrong....what?

20-04-2017, 11:58
Only saw it from 4-4 in the third set so can't comment a great deal but certainly disappointing to have let a 4-0 lead slip away. Andy seemed quite frustrated in the bit I saw, presumably because he had let the lead slip away?
Isn't it about time Lendl showed his face? He hasn't been seen since the first week in Melbourne?
 Scratchy head time! How did that one get away!! Kudos to Vino...he hung in there and played some amazing shots. Sorry Andy is out, but on the other hand, a couple of much needed match play situations for him and a chance to further rest the elbow before his next campaign. Strange match..so many service breaks but many great shots too. Third set was brilliant but very :nailbiter:.
How many points is he defending? Just listened to Annabelle Croft who was actually talking sense for once. She thinks it's linked to him being rusty on a match court. Given he didn't know until a few days ago if he was going to be fit enough to play, it might be a blessing in the long run.
As for the No 1 ranking. I actually don't care. He has reached it. He will forever be a former WorldNo 1. Nobody and nothing can ever take that away from him. To achieve that in the era of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic is no mean feat.
Disappointing, but undoubtedly for the best. All those double faults show his serve is still not 100%.
4-0 up in the third set??
He should have won that. Pity
Onwards Andy!!

Couldn't watch, still out, sad but not totally unexpected, though seeing he lost a 4-0 lead a bit of a shock
The 360 points from the MC SF last year came off on Monday so Andy has added 90 points this week. Play and win Budapest would almost make up the difference. Budapest is a 28 player draw with the top 4 seeds receiving a bye in the first round so 4 matches to win the title.

Is Andy playing Budapest? Couldn't watch the last few games as I could see what was likely to happen. Wonder what he said in the Press Conference.
He didnt play badly , ( apart from the serve ) but to lose from 4-0 up in the third is unlike him
not quite back to 100% yet
I heard Sir Andy was looking for matches on the clay.
Commies suggested a smaller tournament would benefit from Andy's early exit. So maybe he will play somewhere else to get more practice. Think that's what he needs and confidence building, rather than rest.
Onwards and upwards Andy. Disappointing loss after being 4-0 up.
Hope Andy does find a smaller tournament to build up his confidence on clay.

Isn't it about time Lendl showed his face? He hasn't been seen since the first week in Melbourne?
Was thinking that myself.
This is a google translation from an Italian website who always break the 24 hour curfew on press conference transcripts. ;)
You started well, then what happened?
I have not played well in the 4-0, he gained confidence and started playing it faster. I had other opportunities, then I played very badly towards the end.
What feelings do you have?
I'm disappointed to have lost, considering the score in which I found myself. 4-0 in the third, it hardly ever happened to lose in such situations. I had a chance at 5-4. I'm disappointed, maybe tomorrow or the next day we will reflect and think that compared to a few weeks ago I'm fine.
What you think you've had more problems today?
I have not played badly for most of the match. I was hitting well, but again, it's not my area, I have not played much lately, and they happen to lose control. The tactic is an important part of my game, if the match I slipped out of the hands is a problem. Today I made bad decisions often.
Have you thought about going to Barcelona or Budapest?
No, I have to decide whether to go play more matches possible or keep me physically fit and work to the maximum. If I did well in Barcelona or Budapest, I could not train much before Roland Garros, and maybe I would need. I must talk with my team. If I do not play these tournaments will arrive soon in Madrid and I will see.
How were you with your elbow before Montecarlo?
I would not have played if I was not able to serve. I started serving at most only Friday and is statopositivo, perhaps the best message that I bring home from here. Today is better than yesterday and it's great. I was not sure to come here until last Thursday, then I tried and decided.
Serena is pregnant and has said he will return next year. Will she succeed?
Yes why not. It will be difficult but if she wants, is an extraordinary athlete, perhaps the greatest tennis player of all time. It depends on what she wants to do.
Do you think that today the problem can be mental state?
Towards the end I felt a little 'tired, but at 4-0 I was fine. It was not physical the problem, of course. I spoke with my team before the match, reminded me that the red can be a bit 'swing, since the service does not affect. Yesterday I was down 4-5 and then won something like seventeen points in a row. On the red I happen, but I should have done more.
I only saw the first set and Andy was hitting the ball well but his service was certainly nowhere near his best. Maybe he will go and play a smaller tournament. It does seem that he needs the match practice but then perhaps he will decide to have a training block in Barcelona as he has done before. I'm sure Andy and his team know what's best for him.
I just watched Andy's interview and he certainly didn't seem to be too disappointed with the loss - in fact, I felt he was quite up-beat. Certainly, he was disappointed that he had let the lead slip in the third set but said that if you had told him ten days ago that he would be in this position, he would have been delighted. The best news is that he feels his elbow has held up well over the last two days.
Sky interview (http://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/tennis/10844062/murray-confident-despite-defeat) with Andy.
Well the pain, I thought I was having a run of bad luck so that Andy could win. I only saw the first set and had intended to watch the rest when I got back but my sky box crashed for now apparent reason (down with this week!) and so missed a huge section of the match. Just caught the very end. Hopefully he will come back stronger and better in Madrid

Disappointing - as is ever an Andy loss - but only the second run on clay after injury problems. It was the serve that let him down - he broke so many times but had so little power (and indeed his normal accuracy) on the first serve that his confidence dropped. When ARV broke back a second time in the third I somehow knew what the outcome would be.
But I agree with a few comments above. Come on Down Mr Lendl and prove your worth
It's just crossed my mind, that is it possible - that whilst he didn't set out to lose, he might have got what he came for - i.e. a couple of matches, which might be enough at this stage of his recovery?
Andy always knows what's best but if 10 days ago I'd been told Andy loses in the third round to ARV having been 4-0 up in third, I'd have said give MC a miss this year. :p We don't need that level of anxiety. ;)

Andy explained a lot in his interview about where he was in progress and fitness. Although he hates losing he was very sanguine and bearing in mind he wasn't sure he'd play will probably not dwell too much on the loss. He did need matches and had two quite testing ones so whatever tournament he enters now I wish him good luck. Hopefully his serve etc will soon be back to normal.
I wasn't able to watch (as always in the week). I had planned to watch the whole replay on TennisTV when I got home from work but I heard the result so didn't bother watching the whole thing, just the highlights. I was not too surprised to hear Andy had lost but letting the 4-0 lead slip ... that did surprise me! I can't remember that happening too often to Andy, if ever ...
Totally agree about Llendl ... where the chuff is he?! Still can't warm to him I'm afraid but have learnt to accept (through gritted teeth) that he's good for Andy.
Agree with pabbers, probably a bit more match practice is the way forward now we know the elbow is feeling good. Hope to see him playing somewhere very soon.

According to Russell Fuller, Sir Andy's going to play in Budapest next week.
Stell (and others) - if you make a post like that you need to back it up with a quote or reference please.
Nowhere that I can find does Fuller say Andy is definitely going to Budapest next week.
Information MUST be accurate in case it is mistakenly re-quoted by others.

Murray not yet decided on Barcelona/Budapest. Might do training block instead and also support father-in-law Nigel Sears at London Marathon.
And his BBC article (extract)
BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller:
Even before this match, Murray was talking of adding an extra tournament to his schedule and heading to Budapest next week.
He needs more matches and the time to rebuild trust in his serve and elbow: the French Open begins just five weeks on Sunday.
Murray has at least had four and a half hours of competitive clay-court action this week and won't be pressing the panic button just yet.
He reached the semi-finals in Monte Carlo last year, but struggled badly in the early rounds, and still went on to dominate the rest of the year.
Difficult choice I would think - match practice in Budapest or a training block in Barcelona. Andy attributed his turnaround on clay to the latter last time he did it - was that 2015?

I'm with Mrs P, who suggested entering smaller tournaments, a course of action which worked very well for Andy when he was coming back after back surgery and trying to build confidence. Andy has said that, with hindsight, his off-season training block might have been too strenuous after an unprecedented (for him) amount of tennis in the second half of last year. So rather than another mini training block I think, and hope, we will see Andy playing a tournament.
From Andy's press conference, asked where he would do his training.
Q. Where would you do that? Back home?
ANDY MURRAY: Good question. I'm not sure. If I don't play a tournament, I definitely would get to Madrid early. So I would do some of that there.
My father-in-law is running the marathon on Sunday, so I may be at home for that. But, yeah, I'm not sure. I mean, I haven't spoken about that with my team yet, but we'll talk about it tonight or tomorrow morning. Obviously I need to make a decision whether I play next week pretty soon, by Friday evening.
