Not quite sure how Andy turned that around! Best serving saved for the TB? Think Andy the fighter won that one! Hope that will kickstart his clay season now!

Well done, Champ!!!!!:dance::dance::yahoo::yahoo::yaho o::dance::dance::dance::bravo::GBflag: That was an important win for Andy's confidence I feel.

Phew. That was tense. Andy didn't serve well, (46% first serve) and made far too many UEs, but he still had enough to take out a very talented clay courter in top form.

ARV goes long in rally and Andy through, certainly was another tough encounter but gritty determination and improved clay court tennis/better serving got him over the line. Close margins at times though, well done!:clap::clap:

Didn't get to see the match but sounds like it was a Murray coaster. Congrats Andy!!

RosieBear
28-04-2017, 15:19
Huzzah for Muzzah! Not the convincing beatdown I hoped for but Andy lives to fight another day, and build more confidence and concentration, which is the most important thing. An ugly, ugly win - 49 UEs - that's 12 games/ 2 sets - but Andy can take a lot from the fact he played horribly but still found a way. He's on his way back, folks!

My goodness - that was a quick tiebreak. I had allowed half an hour for it. Well done top man. Not sure I will have the stamina to re watch the whole match. That was a superb fighting performance - from AM not me. Mind you after the break in the 3rd I would usually stop and delete the recording, but for some reason I didn't today. Well done our man.

Andy's record so far this year is 13-4. It shows how far he's come that most of us would think he's had a below par start to the year!

Another marathon match defeat to ARV would have been hard to take. He may be a grinder but he's flipping good at it. I hope Andy gets to play him on grass sometime just to put the H2H in the positive. Andy used all his guile including the ugly moonball to get through. NID.

One of the biggest Murray coasters in a while! How to win ugly, but hey, a win's a win! So pleased Andy came thru that! Vino is one tough cookie. Love the way Andy grits his teeth and finds a way to win. How rewarding was coming into the net! Well done champ! :bravo::clap::clap::clap: and also :phew:

I still think he don't get the same kick out of being/winning at the net that he does slugging it out.
It's the only thing that makes sense to me for him not doing it more often.

To me if you can win a point more quickly , coming forward at opportune times would be a no brainer. Though it's not Andy's natural style and risky doing it too often on this surface, obviously you do need to mix it up. Mind you commenting as an observer, haven't played the game at any level for years. Obviously great Andy in semis but still bit away from A game and at this point wouldn't be too optimistic if he were to face Nadal.

Alis
28-04-2017, 15:54
Maybe this match will kick start Andy's season in the same way that the Paire match did in Monte Carlo last year ................... let's hope so anyway! :knight:

Too true RB! He was right to be chuntering but he never gives up. Have to confess that when he went 0-2 down in the 3rd set I went off to cut the grass but I couldn't stay away from the tv - tense or what! Andy did say that he needed match time; well he had it in spadefuls today so here's hoping for a master class from him tomorrow.

Well that was a nailbiter, wasnt it !!!!!

I was on the edge of my seat thru that tiebreaker !!!
Happy he came thru that one , but like James said , not too optimistic if he faces Nadal ( really hate saying that )
Hope he proves me very wrong !!

Alis

Nadal has had his work cut out winning this first set against Chung. Chung has been toe to toe with Rafa all the way through but is now 0-5 down in the first set tie break.

Shame he couldn't maintain his play. Will Chung fall away in the 2nd set?

Didn't see any of the match as at the hospital shop all afternoon. Came in at 16.45 and went straight to flashscores (even before I let the dogs out for a pee); relieved he'd won so settled down to follow the match on here. Wow, unbelievable, he's certainly not firing on all cylinders but still got the win. Perhaps as well I missed it, I might have needed a hospital bed!

Yesssss! Just watched the recording. Phew......that was close. Andy was hitting the ball crisply but not necessarily in the right place! Rather a lot of UEs but he got the job done and I suspect no way was he going to let RV beat him twice in a row.

Wow! A very exciting match :yahoo: Andy really seemed to change gear when he needed too, although might be good to step it up before that!

Well done...........now for the semi!

Well done Andy. A bit messier than we would like but you found the the big points when it mattered and the win. Theim will be interesting but not impossible.
Rafa is playing out of his skin but that a discussion for another day..Sunday hopefully

That turned out to be a great match in the end, but I wonder if Andy would have won more easily if he hadn't been in such a foul mood. I wonder what the problem was. He was like it right from the start - not just the normal chuntering like yesterday, but also the sarcastic smiles as though he were being asked to play with a ping pong ball. Hope he is a better mood tomorrow. Ramos was very impressive, was the more agressive player for most of the match.

Just finished watching the recording, what a scrap. I must have jinxed Andy yesterday by saying his serve was looking better against Lopez. He couldn't buy a first serve in the first set today, but at least he turned things around. All good for the confidence. I do think Andy is ready for some Ivan Influence - the chuntering usually diminishes considerably when Lendl is around

Rosalind
28-04-2017, 20:39
what a saga! Have been watching in fits and starts - bit like Andy's playing! I'm not going to say any more - I'm glad he won but he's not in my good books. Yes, what a scrap!

Had to dash off immediately after Andy's match as I was having folks in for dinner, and because the match was so long I was really under pressure as I hadn't anything prepared! I couldn't wait to get on here again to read thru all the posts...when Andy wins I get such a buzz and I can't get enough of reading all about it! On reflection, as that was only Andy's 4th match on clay while Vino had already played something like 23, that was a great match to pull off when not playing at his best. But he knew what he had to do and did it when it mattered most. So proud of him.

Somehow Andy is not flowing on all cylinders. Something is bugging him somewhere, somehow. Being no 1 ? Being a Sir?
Lack of Lendl ? Elbow? Lasting effects of shingles ?
Or is it that he just can't get into a playing rhythm . The shots are there but not constant.

Whatever it is, sending positive vibes to sort it...for his sake and all of our nerves
