The 32 seeds as it stands. Andy will be drawn to meet one of seeds 25-32 in the third round and one of seeds 13-16 in the fourth round.

Dangerous first round floaters: All of them ;)

Seeds 13-16 look significantly more beatable than a number of those in the 25-32 camp.

Ideal draw: Simon, Pouille, Raonic, Wawrinka
Nightmare Draw: JMDP, Monfils, Thiem, Nadal

I'm not going to hope for anything apart for Andy to start playing well. If he does that virtually nobody is a problem, if he doesn't then, sadly, anyone and everyone will be a threat to him. Horrible that a slam is here and I feel more nervous than excited for it, but I guess you never know, maybe the thought of moving towards his career slam will get Andy's motor running :peace::peace::peace::peace:

One match at a time - lets get the first round over, breathe and look up the next opponent. Good luck Andy - lets hope Ivan has found the right words

This video was posted last night of Andy practising with Pouille yesterday and it doesn't make great viewing as most points end with errors from Andy and he does seem concerned but it being practice I thought nothing of it however from these tweets it would seem the practice session was discussed in L'Equipe this morning.

Mark Nixon‏ @markalannixon
In l'Équipe today: piece on Murray practising with Pouille. Murray got a bit of a 'spanking'. Murray has had a bit of a cold the last couple of days, 'but that's not enough to explain things.' Emmanuel Planque, Pouille's coach, on Murray: "He didn't serve very well, he missed in neutral rallies, which is unusual. He doubts, thinks too much and is less spontaneous. When he as a half-court shot, he hesitates."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0pCUBUjDq4&

This is what practice is for, right?

Worrying too that he has picked up another virus - albeit a cold.

Teresa
25-05-2017, 14:16
I am wondering if he has simply had enough? He has achieved so much, more than any other British tennis player since Fred. Sophia is getting older, he is missing her childhood, perhaps there will be another child soon. Other than Grand Slams - what else is there left for him to achieve?

He is getting older and with his back and the long standing knee problem, his body might well be starting to flag. I have never thought he would go on anything like as long as Federer.

If that's the case I would say - go for it Sir A M - he has nothing left to prove.

themass15
25-05-2017, 14:22
You have a point there Teresa. I was thinking along the same lines this morning. He has achieved so much and has nothing to prove.

Josephine

I hope that Andy retires when he feels he has really reached his limits and I think he would hate if that were now when he was only 30 when so many players have played and are playing a lot longer than that.

themass15
25-05-2017, 15:13
It might be he needs some time out.

Alis
25-05-2017, 15:34
Andy definitely has nothing left to prove but somehow I don't think he is ready to quit yet. He has said several times that he would like to go on for a few more years and, selfishly, I really hope he does. For me, a lot of the fun will go out of watching tennis when Andy finally hangs up his racquets. I do agree that he probably needs some time out to recharge his batteries. It is worrying to hear him say that he is lacking in motivation and struggling to set new goals - that just doesn't sound like Andy at all. I would love to see him do well at RG but I won't be too disappointed if he goes out early. It would give him time to go home and rest before gearing up for Queen's and Wimbledon. I don't know what Lendl would think about that though - I can't help feeling that he won't stay around unless Andy starts winning again soon.

Agreed Alis, a lot of enjoyment will go for me too. The only plus point is I will save a huge amount of money!

Oh dear poor Andy. Nothing seem going right for him yet this year. Hope he recover. Think he need long break get rid all illness and injury keep popping up!

I am not expecting he last long Federer carry on playing tennis cos I think Federer carry on few more years. Not looking forward time both Andy and Roger retire cos I be like who I cheer for???? Nothing new generation make me want cheer them. I watch much I can on normal TV but not same like Andy and Roger. I very glad Andy come along when Tim Henman near retirement so I don't need wait. I feel the piece in the paper was rather unfair of Poulle's coach as I am sure none of Andy's team would say this. Sour grapes maybe as Andy always beats Pouille easily.

I agree with all you have said in your post, Teresa

HoopGirl
26-05-2017, 06:15
Andy still has so much more potential to give - he's not peaked and then suddenly that's it.
Where he is right now as world number one - requires new goals and a reworking of his motivation - and has unfortunately coincided with a spell of ill health and injury - provoked probably by his intense work last year and his intense training off season. His motivation will also be affected by his health - we go back to his sub optimal physical wellbeing - if you aren't feeling great then it's hard to motivate yourself - especially when that requires new goals that haven't really been imbedded yet. It's a real shame he's become number one and then had this bad run of issues because it's compounded his lack of belief in himself. The stats that are out about his performance being so poor compared to - blah, blah, blah just reinforce all of this. I expect Andy is acutely uncomfortable about being number one right now. He clearly has motivation - he's there practising in Paris. If he was really sick he'd be in bed. But it's this chicken and egg scenario - he needs practice and wins to play his way into form, and he needs to feel - not just better - but as a top athlete - he needs to feel sharp mentally with his decisions and physically strong - and have the confidence that his body will do what he needs it to do. Which with Andy can be a lot of running and hustling to get the ball back. Let's hope by some sort of miracle he gets some easy early matches and plays himself into form. Otherwise he'd be better taking a break and going to the grass. Hope to see you in the semis at Queens Andy!

4th Round:

Murray-Berdych
Zverev-Nishikori
Wawrinka-Monfils
Tsonga-Cilic

Raonic-Dimitrov
Sock-Nadal
Thiem-Goffin
Pouille-Djokovic

Andy's prospective route:

R1: Kuznetsov
R2: Lokoli/Klizan
R3: Del Potro
R4: Berdych
QF: Nishikori
SF: Wawrinka
F: Djokovic

Rafa looks straight through to the semis from the draw. Haven't seen Djokovic's.

From BBC

"Last year's runner-up Murray has won his two previous meetings with world number 85 Kuznetsov - in the third round of the 2014 US Open and again on hard court in Beijing last year.

And he told the assembled media in Paris that he feels "much better", following another bout of sickness earlier this week.

The world number one has been struggling with illness and injury so far in 2017, but insisted he is ready to make a real challenge at Roland Garros.

"I will be ready, for sure," said the Briton. "I just wasn't well for a few days. It happens to lots of players during the year just because of what we do.

"We are in the locker rooms with lots of players, lots of sweat, lots of germs, you know, in airplanes all the time. It happens.

"I practised for three hours today, and I feel fine."

Since then Andy has met the media.

Evening Express (https://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/pipe/sport/andy-murray-embraces-the-struggle-ahead-of-french-open-challenge/) - Andy Murray embraces the struggle ahead of French Open Challenge

Murray cut a frustrated figure in practice on Friday, shaking his head and throwing his racket, and made no attempt to disguise his difficulties in a thoughtful press conference.

He said: “The last few months have not been good, obviously. I haven’t played well. I had a few issues, as well. I need to accept that I’m struggling and then find a way to get through it.

“I will get through it, I’m sure of that. When that happens, I don’t know. Hopefully it happens in a few days. If it doesn’t, maybe it happens during the grass.

“But the only way to get through it is to work your way through it, keep working on your game, try and understand what’s not been going right.

“Although it’s very frustrating, you have to try to enjoy this part of what we do as well because the struggles are part of what make the good times so enjoyable.

“I need to enjoy my struggle a little bit just now and that will help me get through it quicker, I believe.”

I like what Andy is saying. He doesn't avoid the truth. He knows he is struggling, but he is equally clear that he can turn this around...if not now in Paris, then perhaps on the grass. I still think that it's a good sign that he wants to play in Paris and is up for the challenges of RG. We all know now not to expect too much from him and we will certainly still be cheering him on no matter what. And if he does make it deep into RG, happy days and a wonderful bonus for him and us. I see more positive signs than negative ones.

He did! Straight sets win! And Schwartzman, after being handed a bagel in the first set by Rublev, went on to win a tight 5 setter, 9-7 in the 5th.
And Mischa is out. Beaten in 4 by the Italian Napolitano.

Scenes at the Klizan/Lokoli match. Lokoli not happy with Klizan's celebration after he DF'd to give Klizan the break. Slanging match at the changeover and the umpire had to get down and keep them apart. Lokoli refused to shake Klizan's hand at the end. Klizan plays the winner of Andy/Kuznetsov in the 2nd round.

The resumption doesn't reproduce last night's drama. They play a single game and Olivio breaks JWT to get the win. Congrats to him on the match of his life, and while always sorry to see Jo leave any tournament, he did himself justice in the contest rather than go out tamely as I feared after the first two sets.

What about all the other French players?? Kyrgios and Stosur at the AO too. However, I really like Jo and I too feel for him. Very hard to come back from 2 sets down anyway but to have to come out and serve to stay in the match cold must be a nightmare.

I forgot about those. I think it's more that whilst it's not been as long as 77 years, it's heading into decades now since a Frenchman won the FO. I also think of the current generation of French men, he has had the best chance. Kyrgios might get more pressure, now he has started to get his act together. The French crucified Jo a couple of years ago when he lost in the semis (I think). It knocked him off his stride for months.

I feel for Jo. It was not only in that match that the French turned against him, but also at the 2012 French Open when he played Novak in the quarter finals. I seem to remember Jo losing the first set and then taking the next two sets. In the fourth set he had two match points. Novak typically came back to force a tiebreak which he won. In the deciding set Jo lost after playing his heart out for more than four hours. It seems to me that Jo never fully recovered from that loss, and he has never been the same player since. A career that started with so much promise has definitely resulted in so much disappointment. He has had his moments tho beating Roger in Wimbledon after being two sets down and I was really happy for him when he won the Rotterdam title earlier this year. He has also won the Paris and Toronto Masters titles.

Jo is one of the characters of the sport and definitely one of the nicest.

Well... winning Masters Titles in the era of the big 4 is still something pretty special! Only happened 11 times in the last 10 years (and two of those to Jo).

He is one of the small group of players who would certainly have won more if the big 4 had not been performing at the levels they have mostly at the same time (or certainly times when two, three or all four were mopping everything up!).
