View Full Version : MADRID 2017, R2: Andy Cops Copil 6'4, 6'3
More horrible clay stuff.
They've never met before, so let's hope for a stress free afternoon!
The Very Best of Luck Andy!!!:thumbup:
All the best Andy! I'm really looking forward to seeing you play again!
All the best of luck, Andy

RBA v Karlovic just gone one set all. Looks like 4 p.m. (our time) start for Andy!

I was just going to post the same
This is Copil's 6th wild card into Madrid, benefiting from billionaire Ion Tiriac owning the tournament. He always looks after fellow Romanians. Cirstea also received a wild card. Copil is the player Aljaz beat twice in Budapest, first in qualifying and then in the first round when he got in as a lucky loser.
He's just tweeted this. :big grin:

Now down for 16:30.
Could be even later if the women have a close 3rd set.
Thank you Dr Ivo and RBA for having such a long match!! It means I am now home from my dental appointment in good time to watch all of Andy's match! I was nearly going to cancel dentist! But now it's all done and dusted and over with. Looking forward to this! Go Andy!
Halep levels the third set 5 - 5.
TB time - go Roberta!!
I can only presume that Halep won the tie break, as the WTA live scores had Vinci winning it 6 - 1. Then, they had Halep winning it 6 - 1. Anyway, Sir Andy time.
Set it to record as I have an appointment with the dog in about 15 minutes. Thought it would be done and dusted by 17:00.
GO ANDY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
( gonna watch some of this before I have to go out & buy a new shower :crying: )
Copil won the toss and elected to receive. He has the look of Rosol about him. ;)
Copil saves 2BPs & holds. 1-1
Andy to his box saying he's "got the wrong information". Sounds like whoever did the analysis on Copil got it wrong.
I'm always nervous when Andy plays someone he hasn't played before - it often takes him a while to suss them out.

Jamie Delgado was watching the Copil match......eeek!
Andy asking for 2 racquets to be re-strung. Whose fault will that be? ;)

Hope Andy can get this done and dusted with the minimum of fuss.
Come on Andy! Don't let this guy get confident. 3-3
Andy's mutterings include "It's not right, hates it" and something about "honesty".
Solid on serve He just needs to get his return game going now
Come on Andy!
Big serving from Copil, both first & second. 4-4
Good serve, holds to 15. 5-4
C'mon, Andy, break and start serving the next set.

This is being a fan. Going from matches history will remember to grinding a match like this out. Would like Andy to finish this set off with a bit of class. C'mon Andy!
First set to Andy:yahoo: :yahoo:
Despite spider cam Andy takes the set like a pro. 6-4
Well played, Andy - class will out!
6-4 WooHoo Andy!! :yahoo:
The BH volley from the baseline to bring up SP was genius. :shades:
Excellent time to come back. Well done World No 1.

I can see all the shades of the real Andy but somewhere the consistency goes a bit haywire. Gradually looking better though.
Come on Andy....wrap it up in 2
I have had to resort to live pause. I am tired today, and so find it more stressful than usual.
Good lad. Two more games please. Preferably one of yours and one of Copil's.
Andy finding his first serve. 5-2

Your pain threshold must be extremely low. ;) Andy didn't face a BP.
All done and dusted
Onwards :knight:
:cheer::cheer::cheer: Classy match Sir A!

Commies said Andy congratulated him on reaching the top 100. Class!
A win is a win and good enough today but I think the next match will tell us a lot more about where he and his elbow is at.

Andy congratulated him on getting into the top 100...nice touch!!!
Snap David....:big grin:
Painful but a win is a win
Why painful? I have hidden for most of it. It looks like the easiest match he has had for a while, given it's his first one in this tournament, and he is usually slow to start.

And on clay, all done and dusty! ;)
I thought Copil played very well and a nice gesture at the end from Sir Andy.

Painful but a win is a win
Was it really that painful ? Andy was always in control and signs of much more confidence in the serve.
If that was painful it could get excruciating later on
Andy congratulated him on getting into the top 100...nice touch!!!
Snap David....:big grin:
Oh thank you all for letting me know.
Sadly my stream was in Spanish!!
:clap::clap: Good job Andy....in less than 90 minutes!! Copil is a decent player and gave Andy a pretty good workout in 1st set. Steady all round performance from Andy today....he didn't need to do any more. And of course the exchange at the net was lovely. Bravo Andy! :bravo:
Painful but a win is a win
??
He gets a day off tomorrow, as Coric has to play his second match, against Herbert or Pouile. Looking likely to be Herbet.

A bit tougher than I envisaged but still comfortable win and Andy should get stronger, well done!
:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :knight:
An efficient win for Andy with some positives. His serve seemed more potent ( Tennis TV showed figures that his serve speed was averaging 197kph this match against an average of 187 throughout '17). Also his groundies had more power to them as the match progressed. Pleasingly, he pounced to gain the break in each set.

Good win by Andy tonight, nice and stress free. Will be the only match I see as off to Italy first thing Thursday morning until 22nd May. If I am lucky they may have some of the Rome Masters on Rai TV.

But I kep;t being frustrated by his inability to get the job done and serve better!!

But his serving was better than it has been for a while. He didn't face any break points. He also looked more comfortable out there. I would suggest progress?

Can't remember reading anything so ridiculous after a routine match (erm, he got the job done so the 'inability' bit of your post is totally incorrect).
:grrr:
He won in straight sets 6-4 6-3, faced no break points and he's working on match fitness following time off with a serious injury that affected his serving arm!!! What did you expect? 6'0,6'0 and blood?
Thought Andy played ok in the 1st set & and won it
thought he played alot better in the 2nd set & and won it
Job Done , Bravo !!!!!!! ( and its so nice to see him on court again )

Enjoyed it - first matches are always difficult, especially against an unknown opponent but Andy handled it well, especially in putting his foot on the gas at the end of the 1st set. Well done Andy

Well done Andy. Needs to get the speed of those groundstrokes up now.
Did you guys notice the handshake & the nice words from Andy at the net ?

Watched my recording when I got home from hospital. Enjoyed the match and thought Andy played well for a first round against someone he hadn't met before. Lovely, classy gesture at the net, so typical of our champ.
