View Full Version : MADRID 2017, R3: Andy v Borna Coric - Thursday 15.00
The Very Best of Luck Andy!!!:thumbup:
Love it when it's an Andy match day! Go champ!!
All the best of luck, Andy
I'm looking forward to seeing you play Andy! All the very best
Coric won his first ATP tournament in Marrakech last month beating Schwartzman, ARV and Kohlschreiber (saving 5 MPs) in the final. He's since lost in the first round of Monte Carlo, Budapest and Istanbul and lost in qualifying in Madrid to Kukushkin. No need to mention Dubai 2015. :p
Coric walks out, closely followed by Sir Andy.

Never. :p 5LiveXtra (Mike Dickson/Russell Fuller) suggesting Andy threw the match to concentrate on Davis Cup. As if.
Coric holds with an ace. 1-1
Big serving from Coric saves 2BPs & holds. 2-2
A pity Andy couldn't have converted one of those break points but it's early days. Andy now 0-30 - c'mon Champ!
A great serve but then goes too long for 15-40. He doesn't quite have his length yet. An ace saves one of the break points.
BH long & Coric breaks. 2-3
................ and Andy goes long again and hands Coric the break.
Coric won 8 of the last 10 points from 15-40 on his serve.

Come on Andy, he doesn't belong on the same court as you.
Serving well to start with...lets get things going
Andy forces the errors from Coric and breaks to love. 3-3
.............. and Andy breaks straight back to love.
5 FH errors & Andy's broken again. 3-4
Andy really not on his game yet and he hands Coric another break. C'mon Andy!
Andy asking his box why he's missing all these FHs. Not sure there was an answer. ;)
Coric isn't doing anything spectacular - Andy's just making too many mistakes.
Coric holds for 5-3. C'mon Andy!!!!
He is still struggling isn't he?

Oh Andy - to lose one service game lamely is unfortunate, to lose two....
Come on, you can do this :cheer:
Andy seems to have gone to pieces at the moment - he serves a double fault and then follows it with two forehands into the net for 0-40. 3 set points to Coric.
Eek! Anyone got a livestream?
Saves 2SPs but not the third. Cripes. 3-6

Oh seriously Andy, I love you but come on. You're world no 1 and this is a lucky loser. Remember who you are FGS!

Andy really needs to regroup - only 11% of second serves won. C'mon, Andy, switch on!
Yikes , did I hear 15 UE in that 1st set ?
I think Alis said not to have any expectations this clay court season. I think she was right. He has lost his edge somehow. Whether the elbow injury is still a factor, or whether it's confidence who knows, but there is something not right.
A long exchange goes Coric's way and he's growing in confidence all the time.

Andy's game fell away somewhat in the middle of the set and couldn't capitalise on the gifted break, can step up though-come on!

Come on Andy, for heavens sake get going. Haven't seen one good Andy shot
This has the feel of the Dimitrov Wimbledon match about it:-(
Another forehand goes wide - deuce.
Saves BP & holds, tough. 1-1
Andy holds serve to steady the ship ............... c'mon, Champ!
"Come on" shouts Sir Andy as he makes it 1 - 1.

Hope he can get going now - c'mon Andy
Meanwhile, Coric really is beginning to believe that he can win this match. C'mon, Andy, break now and put his gas at a peep!
Break point .................... c'mon!!!
Saved with a good serve - back to deuce.
Did I see Nastase in one of the boxes?
Another break point .............. c'mon!
................ and another good serve saves it.
Good serving saves 2BPs & Coric holds. 1-2
Coric holds - Andy's smiling! I may just have to take the dogs for a walk.

Hello everybody! Late arriving! How is Andy playing? Coric playing better? Andy having an off day? Close match?
Not the best we've seen Andy play...by a long long measure
Andy not getting into Coric's serve. 3-4
He still just isn't finding his range and missing shots he would usually make in his sleep. Of course, Andy can still do this but it may just be one of those days!
Two shots go long to give Coric 0-30.
0:30 - it's definitely not going to be his day.
.
Unbelievable, broken to love. 3-5
.................. and it's wide and Coric has the break and will serve for the match.
This is like a bad dream I'm off to feed my dog!
Very disappointing - know the youngsters are coming through but I expected more from our champ. If this form continues we could be in for a lean year.

This is just so unbelievably sad :crying: Andy is a shadow of the player he was last year. Andy's got a lot of pride, and I can't bear to see this - 12 years of graft and dedication to get to number 1 but since he seized the crown I can think of 1 performance he has given that is worthy of it (Dubai/Kohli). I accept he's had injury and illness this year, but there's far more to his woes imo. I'm not criticising him, I'm desperately sad and frustrated for him. Everyone eventually loses the no 1 spot, but I want the player who takes it from Andy to have to work as hard as Andy did to get it. ...so far Andy's offered a massive helping hand to his successor. I rarely get too demoralised, but I just want to cry for him.
Never thought I'd have two horror defeats by Coric to contemplate.
Maybe time for Lendl get his backside over here.
Strange..... he knows something we don't.....he didn't seem at all bothered about losing that.

Ouch, a bad, bad day at the office.
................................... and there it is - Coric wins. Heaven knows what's wrong with Andy - he just wasn't on the court today. Is it because he didn't have his training block on clay, I wonder? Maybe we do just have to write off the clay court season this year.
Strange..... he knows something we don't.....he didn't seem at all bothered about losing that.
Mmmmmm .............. I really hope that isn't the case - not being bothered I mean. That would worry me more than the unforced errors.

If the bit I saw was typical of the match, I am starting to think that Andy needs a lucky draw at the French Open and a VERY friendly draw at Queens if he is going to kickstart his 2017 (unless there is a deeper problem to emerge later). I just hope it IS a case of writing off an indifferent clay court season, but hopefully he can play himself into form against two or three easier opponents in best of five setters (already writing off Rome). If the indifference continues after the clay court season then there really is serious cause for concern and I hope it is psychological and not physiological.

Glad I didn't see it (now in Italy). A SOS should be put out for Lendl!!!!!
Of course Andy will be concerned by that performance but he's a professional and his response was just that, congratulate your opponent, let them have their moment and return to the locker room where he can vent his frustration.

I wish he'd been a bit more concerned on court.m He just didn't get down to winning the match
Andy's press conference will be interesting...
Sitting here in a daze of disbelief! Finding it difficult to process this one. After a comfortable first few games, it all went downhill very quickly for Andy. Coric was relentless...he simply didn't miss, and although Coric played very well, I think if Andy had brought his A game with him, he could have beaten Coric comfortably. I'm not going to search for a reason right now...I don't see the point of that, all I know is, and this is stating the obvious, there is something not right at the moment (and I am usually loathe to openly admit that) but I sincerely hope it can be addressed sooner rather than later. Dare we hope for Rome?? All the best Andy!!
Novak has, supposedly said, he would like to be world number one again. The way Sir Andy's been playing, since his injury, it won't take much for that too happen.

Well don't have much different to add, but just a very disappointing and frustrating performance from Andy and certainly not playing like a world no1 lately. Worrying that that there just didn't seem to be much resistance today, needs to kickstart his season soon. Obviously Lendl is not full time but in the circumstances thought he would've made an reappearance by now. Barcelona did offer at least some hope but a step backwards this week, there may still be physical issue but confidence seems to have taken a knock. Need to give some credit to Coric who played well and kept the pressure on but clearly was given a head start.

Agree with you James about Lendl. I know he's only part time and they are in phone contact but that's not the same as being there. Andy always seems to benefit from his presence. Hopefully he will appear soon with RG around the corner
At this stage in the year Andy has almost the same number of race points (1200) as 2014 (DC points also counted) when he was returning from back surgery. It meant he was chasing points at the end of the year to make the O2.

That was pretty depressing. Not much positive to take from it. Coric played well - that is all. Andy was pretty dreadful - no aggression and it felt like no idea.
I think it is a loss of confidence as Nadal suffered, so I hope he can get it back - but there could be some more quick exits before then.
Just wish Andy had been a more attacking player earlier in his career - too late now to rely on defence and movement, with his confidence shot.
Come on Mr Lendl - earn your fee and help Andy out!
Feel sad for us and Andy.
Not sure what's going on. Is his body starting to fail him? His style of play is very attritional. After 12 years on the tour has he had enough? Does he want to be at home watching Sophia and the next one growing up? Only he knows.
Wawrinka the World No 3 went out in straight sets to somebody of similar ranking. Raonic went out in straight sets, as did Berdych, but Murray gets all the flack (not on here I might add).
Personally I am not bothered about the No 1 ranking. What was important to me was he got it. After last year anything else was always going to be a bonus.
Onwards to the next tournament.
In looking for positives, I can only find excuses like Kukushkin not losing to Coric in qualies, Gasquet's bad back forcing him to withdraw and let the lucky loser in, bad weather in Madrid meaning the roof was closed and Nastase siting in the stands trolling all Brits. :p ;)
Well, hubby and I are sitting in a state of shock at the Caja Magica. Lovely man surprised me with a trip here for my 60th birthday and I was over the moon as you can imagine. Felt a bit anxious about today after Andy's less than impressive performance on Tuesday, but nothing could have prepared us for this. Bitterly disappointed and very sad for our boy. Something is very wrong. Unfocused, disinterested, and just plain poor. I know we will see some good tennis for the rest of the tournament, but right now I feel like getting on a plane home tomorrow.
aww odds , what a shame
Never mind , enjoy the rest of the tourny & time you have away . Better Days ahead for Andy I hope !!!
I do think we should give him more credit than we are giving him. If he is playing poorly then there must be a reason. He is not doing it deliberately. We might not know the reason, but sure as heck there will be one.
If he is looking disinterested it might be because he knows there is sweet Fanny Adams he can do about it at the moment, which must be as frustrating as heck.

Murray said what's concerning is manner with which he loss not the loss itself. In Barca v Thiem he fought, in Madrid v Coric he couldn't change anything. Murray mentioned the moonballing at the end, says he was trying to change anything but was last game & it was too late!

It sounds like this is some sort of mental anticlimax in response to achieving all he did last year and then compounded by the physical issues he has had.
Andy doesn't have the same integral confidence as the others have and perhaps the string of losses has made him doubt himself. Saying that Nadal went through a really long period of poor confidence and slow return of form and he's back at the top of his game.
Or maybe he's wondering what his next goal is and somewhat running out of steam in creating a new one that motivates him.
I hope this is very temporary.
I heard, recently, Sir Andy didn't have a good start to last year either and we all know what happened from Rome onwards. Still hoping the same happens again.

I really think you've hit the nail on the head, HG. Andy has always played better when his back is against the wall. He simply isn't a great front runner in matches. I think it's because he's a very determined person but not a very ruthless one. He'll fight like a tiger to get himself out of hole, but often struggles to crush home an advantage. Being no 1 is the ultimate frontrunning challenge in the game - to be the hunted rather than the hunter and I'm not sure it sits comfortably with Andy's personality. I really hope Andy can develop into the role, just because I want to see him do himself justice, but if that doesn't happen, if we have to wait until he has slipped back down to see his very best tennis again then I can make my peace with that - I love Andy for who he is, and at the end of the day nothing can ever take away from the fact the he made it to the very top. Beyond proud of him and to be a fan.
Actual quotes from Andy's press conference.
”I definitely think I need to be concerned about today. It’s not always the worst thing losing a match, but it’s sometimes the manner of how you lose the match is what can be concerning or disappointing,” said Murray.
”Whereas my match, like, against Thiem in Barcelona, I was disappointed to lose, but I felt like I competed really well. I did some good stuff in the match, found a way to turn it around and make it, you know, a tough match for him.
”Whereas today I didn’t really do any of that stuff. That’s concerning. So I need to think about exactly why that is, what I can do about it.”
”You know, things can turn around quickly in tennis. Borna lost in the qualifying here a few days ago. Now he’s in the quarters playing very good tennis. Things can change fast,” Murray noted.
”But you need to have the right sort of ideas, correct ideas, understand why you’re in the position you’re in. Hopefully I can do that, you know, with my team, and play better in Rome and Roland Garros.”

Thinking about it, ...everyone said that it was quite understandable that Novak lost his focus after winning the French as he had wanted it for so long.. Worked for it as a goal.
Well...didn't Andy work for two aims. 1. To win the ATP world tour finals
2. To become number one
We have to cut him the same slack as Novak was given

Completely agree. He has also had to grapple with the shingles and elbow. The number of times I have thought with AM, that if he has given all he is capable of - then it's still been a great ride. Yet he then pops back up again. I am not writing him off quite yet. By all the laws he shouldn't have been able to come back after the back surgery, but he did to claim another Wimbledon, defeat Nadal on clay, pick up another Gold Medal and grab the No 1 spot. It's all been mega bonuses after the back.

Actual quotes from Andy's press conference.
"I definitely think I need to be concerned about today..."
Today was the first time I expressed open concern about Andy (in an earlier post) as I always knew he couldn't win every single match he plays etc, but today's loss was very concerning and Andy himself admitted that. Those particular words from his presser really stood out to me. But I have no doubt he will sort out what he thinks is the problem and come back very strongly...I will always believe that. Better times ahead folks! Chins up! We always follow him through thick and thin so here we are! We're with you Andy!

Absolutely! Andy hasn't suddenly lost his talent or his motivation. He hasn't suddenly forgotten how to play tennis. He was emotionally and physically exhausted at the end of last season and he has been both ill and injured since then, but he is a world class player and will definitely find his form again. He has been here before - we have been here before - he will bounce back just as Fed and Nadal have. Without a doubt Andy will hit the high spots again and we will be there to celebrate with him! It would be great if he won every match he played but it would also be very boring and Andy is anything but boring!
Like SG feeling pretty depressed after the match (sorry Andy isn't doing anything to cheer you right now SG), the manner of his loss was so odd. Some weird results coming up and certainly a surge from the younger guys, with Coric seeming Andy's bete noire, but another chance next week to go further before RG and then back to our favourite surface and all will be well (fingers and toes crossed). Don't know if anyone watched Supervet tonight but Noel utilised a hyperbolic oxygen chamber (as per Novak) with some success! Andy looked so down in the press conference, bless him, hope he doesn't lose any sleep over it and perhaps Kim - and Lendl - will be around very soon.
Don't know what to say but something definitely not right.
I know it takes a while to recover from Shingles and then he has the problem with his elbow. I find it really sad, as I wanted the other players to be intimidated by him after he reached #1 and now that won't happen. Feel a little guilty feeling like that. After all he reached #1, and by winning the World Tour Finals, has stayed there. Will, always be glad that he has achieved that, along with everything else.
I have to wonder if Lendl is going to bow out again, just as he did when things went downhill and Andy had his back surgery. I think that would really upset him and I hope it isn't the case.
Anyway Andy, for your sake, I hope you can resolve whatever is troubling you and get back your fighting spirit. Will always support you and what is best for you.
I have not posted as I could not watch this match and every thing I would say has been said. Something is wrong and great play doesn't go away for no reason.

One of Andy's strongest traits is working things out and his refreshingly honest after match comments and realistic assessment of his own game means he's half way there already. He can work it out. (No Liverpool reference lyric intended )

I didn't see the match, just 'highlights' (were there any for us Andy fans?!) but I agree with everything said in these posts.
Ups and downs have always been trademark Andy. He wins big, achieves a new goal and it has often been followed by a lean spell throughout his career. He'll be back strong everyone, #AlwaysBelieve
I think the elbow is still troubling him. In Barcelona, in the first few games of his match against Thiem, he kept holding it and shaking it. I really expected him to retire from the match as he seemed so troubled by it.
Mmmm - I think you may be right, Linda. I thought Jamie Delgado looked uncomfortable from the outset of yesterday's match. It will be very interesting to see if Lendl puts in an appearance any time soon. I would love to be wrong but I think he may well prove to be a fair weather friend.
Fair weather friend ?
Hes a well paid coach , and I think they have agreed that he would be there for slams , not on a full time basis

Very true & I am sure that that I read somewhere that Jamie Delgado is in contact with Ivan regularly by phone.
I'm sure you're both right - I just never have quite got over him quitting when the going got tough after Andy's back surgery.
I'm sure Lendl has been consulting and communicating with Andy & Jamie as was agreed with Andy.
Andy obviously felt he needed him back on the team and it obviously worked. Although Andy has been quick to give praise to Jamie as well, as he is there with him every week.
As I said before, I just hope there is not trouble brewing with Lendl that is causing Andy to be distracted. Hopefully he just needs to get back into the swing of things after his illness and elbow and regain his confidence.
EDIT: Just read on other thread that it seems Lendl will be joining Andy, so I'm really happy that my fears are unfounded. :)
Coric has withdrawn from Rome (where he would've been playing qualies) with a shoulder injury.

Yes he had shoulder treatment during his match with Thiem. But also the commies were saying that due to the lateness of his match last night in Madrid, he was never going to make it (to Rome) on time anyway!

I don't think Lendl quit - my understanding is that he could not do the number of weeks Andy wanted but he did offer a lesser amount. That didn't suit Andy and they decided mutually to part. I felt at the time that Andy might have been better to take the number of weeks Lendl offered.
your right Elizabeth , dont know where the rumour started that Lendl quit and left Andy when he was struggling , but its been debunked a few times , and by Andy himself i think
Did Greg, Marcus and Barry not say that Lendl would be back with Andy for Roland Garros?

Hope these people are right.
