I watched the pre-match chat this morning on ITV 4. It was really good to see Marion Bartoli looking her old self again and ably taking on Inverdale to boot! And Marion called it when she predicted that Makarova would beat Kerber today. She was exactly right. It was really interesting to hear her comments on the women's game in general. 3 women's seeds out today...Kerber(1), Lucic-Baroni(22) and Vinci(31).
Just when I manage to get my tongue round Pavlyuchenkova and Arruabarrena, along comes Andrianjafitrimo!! She is French and will be playing on Court 17 tomorrow. Let's see how you manage that one Inverdale!
Couldn't agree more about Marion Bartoli - great to see her back to her old self. Really good, too, to see Petra Kvitova back on court again.
Intrigued by her name(!) I just had to watch the French woman Tessah Andrianjafitrimo play. She is a very beautiful young 18 year old of Malagasy descent only 5'7" tall. She lost her match to an equally beautiful and elegant 5'10" 20 year old Canadian, Francoise Abanda.
I don't know how far they will climb up the rankings...I would say they are a work in progress...but loved watching them.
Incidentally, Andrianjafatrimo isn't as difficult to pronounce as it looks! It rolls off the tongue quite easily. The German ump had no problems!!
Strycova winning 6 - 3, 1 - 0.
Strycova wins 6 - 3, 6 - 0.
Ozaki wins the first set against Bouchard 6 - 2.
Caro Wozniacki double bagels poor Canadian qualifier Francoise Abanda.

C'mon Aga. Big opportunity for her, with absence of Serena, Maria and Vika. Would love to see her or Halep win the whole thing.
17 year old Vondrousova in tears after losing, the same player Inverdale called emotionless and joyless as she has a big serve yet he waxed lyrical about John "The Big Man" Isner. Inverdale is the worst.

Good Aga fought back well for the win but the French has not been the happiest hunting ground and not great results lately, however hopefully can turn it around. Halep I think though with the better chance, was good to see Kvitova back and whilst pity edged out by Mattek Sands going to take a bit of time.

Aga loses to Cornet pretty tamely  Shame. She's having a slow year, but hoped she could find something here and take advantage of noticeable absences. Hopefully better form on grass.:peace:

Certainly disappointing performance from Aga,hopefully she gets going on the grass. Good win for home player though.
Hsieh gave Garcia a good run for her money. Garcia wins match 9-7 in the 3rd set.

Kiki v Mugu up now. Should be a good one, as long as Mladenovic has enough in the tank after a few tough battles to get here. Like them both, just hoping for a great match.

Mladenovic takes the first set 6-1 in barely half an hour. Mugu just not turned up. Very disappointing.

It will be a new women's champion, Muguruza fought back but still went down to Mladenovic 6-3 in 3rd, earlier Wozniacki put out Kusnetsova (another former champ) 6-2 in the decider. Former finalist Stosur lost out to Ostapenko 6-4 in final set.
Mladenovic's win means that, despite doing rubbish so far in the WTA pick'em, I still have my four semifinalists!
I just can't take to Mladenovic. I've watched her play the IPTL for the last couple of years and I thought she came across as an absolute diva who loved to be the centre of attention. She has been playing very well this season though and played a good match today but I would rather that Muguruza had gone through.

I don't mind Mladenovic, though cert prefer Gabrine-however her comments she was glad her 2017 French was over didn't sound too positive (notwithstanding the pressure)

I think Garbine's comments referred to how she felt she was treated by the crowd, that they strayed from supporting Mladenovic into disrespecting her. Also she was very upset when asked about KM shouting 'forza' and celebrating her mistakes. Mugu said she felt like she was making enemies. Felt very sorry her  but also maybe she was a little emotional about not defending her title. Hopefully she bounces back soon because she's really a wonderful personality.

................ and she's had a pretty rotten season so far. I really hope she bounces back - I like her.
Does anyone know what the spat between Garcia and Cornet was about?

Hope it works!
Thanks, Lynne. Reading between the lines it does seem that maybe Garcia has been bullied by the other French girls. It appears to have started when she decided she didn't want to continue to play doubles with Mladenovic but who knows?
Garcia just can't seem to get over the line .................... c'mon Caroline!!
Well, she did it in the end - well done, Caroline! A kiss and a smile at the net - through gritted teeth maybe but it was nice to see.
Very nice at the net...good handshake!!
Goodness! That was a dog fight between Pliskova and Cepede Royg! CR very tenacious...and very noisy! She was actually verbally exploding before she even struck the ball! Pliskova scraped through in the end! Interesting line up now in the women's QFs.
I have to confess I had never heard of Cepede Royg...
I have to confess I had never heard of Cepede Royg...
You may not have heard of her, but she can certainly be heard!
During the rain break ITV4 showed the match on Lenglen between Wozniacki and Ostapenko. Osta is one tough cookie. I remember her having a spat with Naomi Broady in New Zealand a couple of years ago. Today she queried SO many line calls...the umpire was up and down from her chair like a yoyo! That got me thinking (again!) about Hawkeye being used on clay. It doesn't seem right that on clay a player can seemingly challenge as many calls as they like, whereas if Hawkeye were to used that would be reduced to 3 challenges per set. I think if they don't introduce Hawkeye on clay, (and I believe there is a good case to do so) a player should still only be allowed 3 chances per set to query a line call. It might also help reduce the confusion between player and umpire as to the correct mark. It was just Osta's numerous calls today for the umpire to clarify calls that didn't seem right to me!
I agree absolutely, only three challenges should be allowed on clay. I understand the reasons that they are reluctant to use Hawkeye but I still think it would make life much simpler for all concerned.
Why are they reluctant to use Hawkeye on clay? Is it something to do with accuracy? Can't be any worse than an umpire trying to read a mark on the clay!
They say that the margin for error might prove difficult on clay when Hawkeye has the ball out and the mark clearly makes it in or vice versa. I still think it should be used though.
I'm so glad that Timea went through - not just because I'm not keen on Mladenovic but because Timea's story is so inspiring. Ostapenko played a blinder but I wish Caroline had found a way to go through. There's plenty of time for Ostapenko but this was a great chance for Woz to win a Major when so many of the big hitters were missing. I've always been a Woz fan. I wouldn't like to put any money on who's going to win the women's title now - the bookies have Halep as the favourite but I'm not so sure.

Hawkeye is less accurate than looking at the mark.

Svitolina takes first set 6-3. Slow start from Simona, went 5-0 down and left herself too much to do. C'mon Simona :cheer:
Simona down a double break in the 2nd.
Astonishing defence from Simona - 3 points to level the set at 5 all.
Has Halep always been so loud !!!! ?

I haven't really been conscious of it before. She is very loud today and getting louder by the minute.

Hat's off to Simona - that was a great fight back. Svitolina must wonder what on earth happened.

Certainly great fightback from Simona as title hopes were hanging by a thread, Svitolina though will be gutted as her chance slipped away. Should be interesting semi with Pliskova.
This has been some match between Ostapenko and Bacsinzky - a great advert for women's tennis. It looks as though the twenty year old is going to take it now though.

Really good match and what a lovely birthday present.
dont usually follow the women to much , but this young Ostapenko is something else !!!
So aggressive , lots of fun to watch !!
( she hits her forehand harder than Andy ? ):faint:
RosieBear
08-06-2017, 15:59
Preferred Timea because feel like she's paid her dues a little more, but congrats Ostapenko. She has a huge game - she hits 44% of her shots within 2 feet of the lines; Stan only manages 31%. Staggering power & accuracy:faint:
I would have preferred Timea to win too - only because Ostapenko has plenty of time and Timea has an amazing back story. Having said that, Ostapenko certainly deserved the win - seemingly, she hits the ball as hard as Andy!

They said her forehands were faster than Andy's.
Im with you there SG !!! makes it so much better not knowing who will win
However , I think if Ostapenko plays in the final like she did today , she will beat either of these 2

Hard to see who will win. Wonder if Ostapenko can go all the way. She has already leapt up the rankings.
Haven't watched much ladies tennis for years (Serena put me off) but thoroughly enjoyed the Ostapenko/Bacsinzky match; not enjoying the Halep/Pliskova as much (the noise Halep makes is off-putting!). Both Osteopenko and Halep appear to favour the same outfit; if Halep wins (as it appears she will) what will happen in the final? - both will regard it as their lucky outfit!
I didnt even notice they were wearing the same thing
Halep takes it , so the final is set , should be interesting
think Ostapenko may take it if she can hold her nerve .

Well done Simona and very best of luck for the final. Hope and think she'll do it; she has been here before but it's unchartered territory for Ostapenko. But we shall see.
It would be amazing if Ostapenko won because she has never won a title before. Imagine winning a Major as your first title!! I hope Halep does it though - Ostapenko has time on her side.

Their outfit seems to be Adidas standard issue this year.
I watched and enjoyed both matches today. Ostapenko is awesome, and as Petch said, "she's not afraid to defend her corner" when it comes to line calls. However, I think she would be capable of throwing a tantrum and I would like to see her mature a bit before she starts winning majors. It's going to be a very noisy final with both players shrieking loudly and also dressed the same as they are both sponsored by Adidas! Only difference is that Halep tucks her top into her skirt and Ostapenko doesn't!!
yes it will be very noisy , but Ostapenko has made the final and if she wins it she deserves it , whether shes mature or not

Ostapenko certainly has the weapons and now an intriguing final set, Halep up 2-1.
Ostapenko has come back again - she certainly has fighting spirit. She now has two break points to take the lead - c'mon Simona.
............. and Ostapenko takes it on a lucky net cord. If she can keep her head and cut out the unforced errors the trophy is surely hers.

What a great final. Must confess I don't watch much women's tennis. The style of play and often predictable nature of it puts me off but this was a ding-dong of a contest and what an absolutely nerveless performance from Ostapenko. Well done :bravo:
Hope she keeps going. At the moment I tend to not hold my breath with these young players
That match was hugely entertaining! I have to confess to not being a fan of Ostapenko due to her previous histrionics on court, but I'll not hold that against her anymore. She is the sort of character that women's tennis really needs and her style certainly has the wow factor. Looking forward to seeing her on the grass. And she did behave very well today. I'm also sparing a wee thought for Simona. She is obviously hugely disappointed. And I used to love watching Frankie Durr too Maureen! Her unorthodox style completely fascinated me!

I was hoping Halep would win mainly because of watching her push Sharapova so hard in her previous RG final but losing it. (I'm not so keen on her very extended shriek though). I felt sad for her.
I found Ostapenko a bit precocious. You could every so often see the tantrum nearly coming. But credit to her, she controlled herself and if anyone is hitting that amount of winners, then they deserve to win, so well done to her! It is really refreshing for women's tennis to have someone new bounce on to the biggest stage like that. Who missed Williams, or Sharapova or Azarenka? It all felt much more open and exciting.
And interesting that Ostapenko wins her maiden slam title at RG with an average forehand speed higher than Andy's.... I feel there is a lesson there.... ;)
Wow , a great match , you guys have said it all
I am so happy for her !!!!
Bit miffed because I missed what was obviously a good match. ITV4 had racing on when I put it on, couldn't seem to get it on my normal Bet365 stream and then when I tried ITV4 later it was men's doubles - ah well!
The ladies' singles was on ITV. Just watching the men's doubles final and the stadium is virtually empty and there is absolutely no atmosphere. Such a shame - it wouldn't happen at Wimbledon!!
Silly me - see it now in the magazine but just assumed it would be on ITV4 - really need to go to Specsavers! Same with men's tomorrow.

Well done Jelena. Good to see a competitive women's final and a young player to win a grand slam as her first title.
Sorry for Simona as I'd like to have seen her win the title.
