Most of the matches above have been long close ones! So I reckon we are in for a humdinger on Saturday! Go Andy!
Great match for the middle Saturday !
I'm expecting Andy to win. If it gets shown between 12.30pm and 4.30pm, tomorrow, then I will watch it on ITV 4 and have radio five live going as well.

Good luck Andy, you can do this. I'm backing Andy to come through because I think he wants this year's French BIG time. He'll be keenly aware that Stan will be eye-ing a career slam at Wimbledon....Stan has never done anything of note on grass, but Stan can also suddenly come alive.... Andy won't want to be chasing the FO on the wrong side of 30 for his career slam..... C'mon Andy, make this year your year.:cheer::cheer:

Looking forward to this one.....and dreading it at the same time. My nerves will be on edge from the start.
But ..yes..it's a match and a barrier that Andy wants to break through , and he can, I think he will
Probably the toughest (on paper) 3rd round match at a slam Andy has played since he beat Roddick (who was 5th seed) at Wimbledon in 2006. Some might say it's even tougher.

Absolutely love Delpo the man, but as a player...ugghh...c'mon Andy, counter the one-dimensional ball bashing with your genius!
Huge serving from 0-30. 1-3
The trouble is their matches are always attritional- and given their respective health problems neither of them need it.

Unfortunate Andy behind but hopefully can get right back in the set-come on!
How to keep it away from Del Potro's FH? Seems impossible. 2-4
Josephine
03-06-2017, 11:25
Right now Delpo beating Andy up. He needs something a bit more.
Andy's average forehand speed 70 mph. Needs a lot more. He is thinking too much about his opponent not his own game.
Now that FH I like. :p 3-4
Big serving saves 2BPs. Deuce

Think Andy is going to have to trust his automatic pilot and stop thinking so much. Delpo knows that ground strokes are going to the backhand and - unless Andy sends a few down his forehand line - he is so ready.

For the first time this grand slam, I am going to look at the draw. Not because one match makes the tournament, but Andy himself says that he is getting better in each round in a way that suggests to me that is a comment not just about striking a tennis ball.

Brilliant match byAndy, nice to see our no 1 again. Possibly the only one of his matches I'll see this tournament so a good one to see. Felt surprisingly calm throughout, got the feeling even when he was behind in the first that fighting Andy had come to play and that he was ready to do whatever needed to win. Can't really explain but was getting a different feeling from matches in Rome etc. Just felt like the real Andy on court.

Oh my didn't our man play well!! Andy proved a big point today by showing he is well and truly up for this! Not all the tennis was bash bish boom! Was so good to see Andy step it up in that match and finally start to play with some aggression and confidence after a rather tentative start.
First set was so crucial - I was in all sorts of knots. Delpo knew he had to win it and it was so tight. Think Andy would have come through anyway but winning that set after such a battle obviously allowed him to open up and play more freely.

Whilst delighted and pleased to see Andy knuckle down to do the job today, I do think it's early to say 'the real Andy is back'. Good signs, but he is not quite there yet.
It was the devastating forehand which made so much difference to his play last year and it's not quite back yet. But at least he's not rubbing the elbow so maybe not too long. MEanwhile I am so happy to see hi in the second week

Andy got better & better as the match went on !!!!!!!
Some of those angles he was creating were fantastic !!!
on he goes :jitterbug::jitterbug:
Del Potro's ranking is not going to be higher than 30 after RollyG and could drop depending on how well Verdasco & Anderson fare. He's scheduled to play Hertogenbosch and Queens so it would be good for him (and the top 8 seeds) if he could do well and increase his ranking before Wimbledon. He's going to be a dangerous first round floater at Queens.

Been out so kept up on live score now watching Eurosport French Open Today. Andy looked pretty dialled in to this match & flashes of Murray 2016. Really hope this is the kick start we (& he) wanted for 2017.
Cmon Muzz!
Was a brilliant match, not simply for the 1st set tension but to see Andy so concentrated when it came to a match with a top player. I think lately he has struggled to find that conviction when playing players he normally beats but when he plays a top notch player, the champion within comes out.

Thanks for the link to the highlights Bardot! Have recorded the match for when I get back home but it was lovely seeing part tonight :) A great solid win for Andy and a bit to think about for Nole and the rest..............
watch out, number 1 is about!
I put ITV 4 back on, after the match, and found them showing Andy's match again because of the rain.
Was travelling yesterday so missed this. Will have to subscribe to tennis tv again to get tennis out here in Portugal so hopefully will be able to watch replay of this match.
Andy really did play a smart match yesterday. Three key words from his presser stood out to me..."I WAS THINKING...."
He really was. I love his analysis of his play after a match and I thought his explanation of his conscious decisions to play into the Delpo forehand was very clever..... " I played quite a lot into his FH today..." As many players with big FH's like to hit their FH from their BH corner.."It's a bit harder to read where someone is going to hit from that side." And this is where the smartness and the clever thinking comes in..."you need to pick the right moments when to go into that stroke...." I think he did!!
Andy also reckoned that playing someone as good as Delpo meant his focus was higher. Possibly explains why he wanders a bit in the earlier rounds? I'm sure if he THINKS like yesterday, he will soon figure out Khachanov.

Just noticed from the highlights the many empty seats in the stadium.
So surprised that there were so many empty seats for such an amazing match such as that.
Was travelling yesterday so missed this. Will have to subscribe to tennis tv again to get tennis out here in Portugal so hopefully will be able to watch replay of this match.
Tennis TV don't cover the slams pabbers. It's on Eurosport.
On another point altogether ... what an amazing first set in particular. This is the Andy we know and love, not 100% back but getting there. I hate to say I told you so .... but I told you so ;) I always believed the extra motivation for a GS would kick start his resurgence :big grin:

I couldn't be more delighted that you were right on this occasion, Caro - kudos to you!

You were absolutely right, my dear:thumbup: Andy's looking seriously motivated ...and this is not just any GS, it's one he hasn't already got. I can't put into words how much I want a career slam for Andy. Omg, the exclusivity of that club not just in terms of its members but also the legends who couldn't make it. I want Andy in BIG time. He so deserves it because of his versatility - better on clay than Fed, better than Rafa on grass, and as for HC, just genius.
(just to be clear about the above, it's not an expectation or demand or suggestion that he's somehow failed if he doesn't get a career slam before retirement, simply my deeply held wish for him).

Still thinking that was one of the best, if not the best, opening set in a slam, that I have ever seen, so vital that Andy won it as well, otherwise could have been a whole lot more complicated.
