As some of you may already know I quite like my holidays. Some may even think I go to Disney World in Florida too often!
As I have just got back I have started thinking about my next trip - probably California and Las Vegas and wondered what the rest of you had planned?

I use up all my holiday from work in going to tennis tournaments! Am already booked for Monte Carlo next year.
Well that's still a nice holiday :)
Monte Carlo is bad time of year for work for me, maybe if I change jobs I can go one day :)

It's a really bad time for me too, as I have to do a few payroll year ends and also the auditors come to the Yacht Club in April. But last year I decided that I really wanted to go so I would make the time, and I was really glad I did. So I'm going back again this year.

I'm not allowed to take that time off :( We always have the possibility of the NAO visiting! If I get out of in year management it might be possible...
Any Vegas tips for me J?leave your bank card in your room when you hit the casinos:)
seriously there is so much to see & do there its hard to pack it all in,genbrit would be your best bet for inside info she lives there
I shall ask Genbrit lots of questions nearer the time - probably won't be until next Sept but I have holiday planning withdrawal symptoms as I have nothing to plan! Can't even book flights yet :(

There's a surprise. ;)
Lizzim, can you post links to your latest blogs on here so everyone can read them?
I'd go to California. Love it there. We went to Palm Desert in January (where the Indian Wells tournament takes place) and it was awesome even if it was a bit nippy. The Joshua Tree National Park was brilliant.
I've also been to Santa Barbara, San Fran and Los Angeles and everywhere up the coastline.

Lizzim,
September is one of the best times to come to Vegas, weather wise. I would make it the last couple of weeks to give it time to cool down. This year we are still in the 90's but it feels nice. I love to people watch here, it is free entertainment!!
Let me know places you are thinking of staying and what you like to do and I will help as much as I can.
San Diego, California is really nice too. Good weather year round and I love Seaworld and the zoo there.
Lizzim, can you post links to your latest blogs on here so everyone can read them?
Did you read them all now RL? Don't suppose you have changed your mind about Disney?! You would probably like Hilton Head though :) Did you see my dolphin picture?
If Davech is around I have a challenge - look at the photos and see if you can tell which ones I took instead of Rob (not including pics of Rob!)
Genbrit,
Will likely be last week of Sept plus first week of Oct. Have to go to Disneyland, Grand Canyon and Rob is toying with the idea of renting an RV for a few days! Will have more questions nearer the time :)

Read the entire blog. Good stuff! Some really excellent photos altho' too many inc. Disney characters (kidding). When we were in Florida last year my hubby and kids did the dolphin boat cruise at sunset. They loved it, too!
Would love to go to Hilton Head. And Grand Canyon too.
So you want to go to Disneyland in Anaheim? I went there in '91 and it's much smaller than DW and much more manageable. It's like Magic Kingdom really.
Yes, Disneyland is an absolute must for me! I am a bit worried that it might be disappointing having been to Florida first but I love the Magic Kingdom so hopefully not!
Haven't been to Disneyworld but love Disneyland. With the addition of Californian Adventure I think it is just the right size. If you can afford to stay at one of the hotels in the park it is great. My family has stayed at Paradise Pier in a room overlooking Californian Adventure park, it was a bit cheaper than Grand Californian Hotel.

My family has stayed at Paradise Pier in a room overlooking Californian Adventure park, it was a bit cheaper than Grand Californian Hotel. We visited Disneyland when in California in the 80s. We also visited Las Vegas for three days. It was early August and so hot!! We saw a lot of places that year..Colorado, then Las Vegas followed by California. Loved every minute of it. Husband drove miles!! btw in Las Vegas we stayed in the Stardust on the Strip and in LA at the Westin Bonaventure. Loved the outside glass lift!!
SG - Las Vegas has changed a lot since the 80's - you need to come back & visit.
You can't stay in the Stardust now though as it was demolished or "imploded" as they say here in 2007 to make way for a condo/resort that unfortunately never got started due to the economy. Lots of other fun places to stay though!!!

Yes James. Holidays & tennis sounds like a winning combination to me. Would love to go to the Olympics as well.
I never have a summer holiday - 'cos I can't stand the heat! My only non-tennis holiday in the last couple of years was my winter cruise up the coast of Norway into the Arctic Circle!
ETA - I've just had to edit my post 'cos my typing is getting really bad! I used to be a very fast and accurate typist but lately I keep hitting all the wrong keys. I somehow managed to type 'ox' instead of 'cos'! I hope it's not the first signs of senility :sofa: and don't tell me that there have been signs for ages!

We have 3 (well almost - the 3rd is being baptised on the 18th Dec) all from the same family, and the parents are friends from school who would probably never take the kids without us - so we convinced them we should all go :)

A quick holiday related question for anyone that has been to California....
We were planning to do Anaheim (for Disney) plus Las Vegas and Grand Canyon on a 2 week trip this September/October. I have now decided that I should act like a grown up and do some things around the house - decorating and carpets etc :(

Oh!!! Hmmm, that is tricky. I say just do Grand Canyon and Vegas and leave out LA. I mean, how many Disney places do you need to go to?
That's the trouble though - I would rather do Disney and nothing else...!
Also, if I'm going to do Vegas wouldn't it be better if I have more cash to throw at it? So that I can properly get into the spirit of Vegas?
I think I would only want to do Disneyland once and then we could come back in a couple of years and do Vegas etc properly?!

There's just something about Disney...!
I've currently got the Grand Californian Hotel booked for 4 nights (refundable in case I cancel the whole trip) so was thinking 3 days in Disneyland/California Adventure. Rob wants to go to Universal Studios so that's another day at least then we could just do some sightseeing around LA. Unless it is feasible to do the Grand Canyon as well?
RoastLamb
17-03-2012, 17:11
Universal Studios is awesome!!! Much better than the Orlando one, imho.
That's what I am hoping - we have only done the Orlando one once and don't plan on going back...!
At the moment I can get flights into LA for £472 each...not sure if that is as low as they will go? It's a bit more than we normally pay to fly to Orlando but then that's too be expected as it is further!
I don't get the Disney thing either. But I should imagine that the Grand Canyon is well worth seeing - if I had the choice, that's what I'd go for. Although if I had the chance to travel to the American West just once, I'd go to Indian Wells for the tournament!
Might try Indian Wells at some point - the job I am in at the moment doesn't really allow it though as I would be out of the office at the wrong time of the month.
Trouble is - I'm sure the Grand Canyon is amazing but I still want to go to Disneyland once as well :)

Aw very jealous - would love to do that - I have friends in Salem - and have been to Boston and I loved it - would go back in a minute!
Lucky Lizzim - hope you do get a chance to go to the Grand Canyon!
I plan on spending 3 days at Disneyland/California Adventure - if I only make one visit I want to see and do everything so it'll take me a bit longer than some :) Universal will probably only take one day and we probably won't spend too long in LA so that leaves 4/5 days to do the Grand Canyon and maybe stop off at Vegas on the way :)

Isn't Disneyland the same size as the Magic Kingdom? Only needs a day surely?
We're going out west for our summer hol. Flying Toronto-Victoria (Vancouver Island) then onto Vancouver via ferry and up to Whistler then along British Columbia stopping at Kelowna/Kamloops then onto Alberta and the rockies, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper and finishing off in Calgary and flying home from there. I've been to all those places myself when I was single so this will be new and fun for the kids.
Disneyland needs 1 day minimum plus the other park needs a day. I can easily spend 2 days in the MK every trip :) Universal might not take a whole day but still....!
I would take the time you want at Disney. I didn't care for Universal but then I'm not a movie buff but I love Disney/Grand Adventure. Haven't been to Florida so can't compare. I love San Diego too - Seaworld and the Zoo are great and some time on the beach after all the walking, hmmmm.
Maybe Vegas/Grand Canyon on another trip but I would spend more time in Vegas than the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon is amazing, so many different colors but I think there is more to do/see in Vegas and of course the Hoover Dam between the two is a must. Lake Havasu is a little out of the way but it is where the original London Bridge is now, although I was a little disappointed when I went there as there is not a lot there apart from the bridge.
have fun, Lizzim. Sept/Oct is perfect time to visit Vegas actually.
Well this is my potential itinerary:
Sat 22nd - Fly into LAX - need to book a hotel (near airport or go straight to Anaheim?)
Sun 23rd - Check into Grand Californian for 4 night
3 days at Disneyland/California Adventure
1 day at Universal
Maybe try and see the Hollywood sign on the Universal day?
Thurs 27th check out of GC and travel to Vegas - stopping here for 1 night
Fri 28th drive from Vegas to Grand Canyon - stay here 1 night
Sat 29th - head back towards LA - stop somewhere on route?
Sun 30th - need to be in LA overnight
Mon 1st - Fly home at 1600 - see some local sites?
Would love any comments/advice especially from Genbrit :)
we went straight to Anaheim, found a cheap motel NP, motel was cool tho cant say i liked the area but least its handy for Dl
Ok, I'm only ten weeks away now....and so my Disney excitement is increasing (and my boss won't let me talk about it until a month before I go!)
The latest version of the ever changing itinerary is as follows:
22nd Sept - Arrive LAX then stay at Doubletree in Anaheim
23rd Sept - Move to Grand Californian Hotel (Disneyland) for 4 nights
27th Sept - Long drive to Grand Canyon - spend 1 night at the Bright Angel Lodge http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/bright-angel-lodge-408.html (This is the 3rd hotel I have booked - but think this will be the one I keep!)
28th Sept - Drive from GC to Las Vegas for 2 nights - staying at Aria. Really hoping to see Penn and Teller - but still waiting for tickets to go on sale!
30th Sept - Back to LA for 1 night before flying home the next day :(

We had a nice time in B.C. Weather was nice most of the time, not too hot nor wet. I have to be honest I love going hiking in the countryside, parks, trails, etc., and I really don't enjoy being in tourist traps. Vancouver felt really crowded as did Whistler but we managed some nice activities. Ziplining down Whistler mountain for example and treetop walking in Capilano. It takes half an hour to get up the mountain on a gondola. Unreal. We went through spooky clouds above the valley to reach the summit which was blue sky and sunny. The scenery is so breathtaking. Haven't downloaded my photos as yet but will soon. Saw some wildlife - seals and kingfishers in Van. Island, deers in the streets, bald eagle near the Vancouver ferry to Victoria and a black bear in the car park of a provincial park on Van. Island. Enjoyed afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel in Victoria which was fabby (but v. expensive). We stayed in five different hotels in total and only one was duff (downtown Vancouver). I couldn't get over how many Aussie students there were in Whistler working in the hotels, grocery stores, retail outlets, ski lifts, they were everywhere. I guess they wanted to get away from the Oz winter.
Sounds great! Looking forward to seeing your photos.

Just seen your posts Lizzim, yeah know you are looking forward to this. Good time of the year to come, should have coolled off a little by then.
Bright Angel Lodge looks nice, when we went to the canyon the first time we camped in a tent and it snowed in April!!! You will love it.
Aria is supposed to be nice. We haven't stayed in City Center yet but on our bucket list. We just stayed at the Golden Nugget at the Fremont St. Experience and I really enjoyed it. Under the canopy was cooler than outside on the strip and there pool has a water slide that goes through a tank full of sharks. Problem is you go so fast down the slide that you miss the sharks but a good view from the outside looking in at people sliding through. Can get drinks at lots of places in different BIG plastic souvenir glasses, which if you keep you can get refilled at cheaper prices during your stay. :)
Have you got your tickets for Penn & Teller yet? Looks like they are on sale now.
Have fun, let me know if u have any question re Vegas.

Just over 7 weeks until our New England in the Fall experience. Can't wait...have always wanted to visit that area. Our trip will include Boston, Cape Cod, Newport & Ocean Drive, Lexington, Concord & Salem. Then the coast of Maine inc Portland and Kennebunkport then through New Hampshire to Monpelier,Vermont. A visit to Burlington and a cruise on the River Champlain then back to Boston for more sightseeing and shopping. This is an organised tour by luxury coach so should be quite relaxing. Looking forward to seeing the coastline and the foliage as well as historic Boston and the Battlefields of the War of Independence.
Sounds wonderful SG. Do let me know how it goes - been tempted by coach tours to do this kind of trip but always chickened out as not sure how it would be.

Yes , Ive been there , the waits are horrible , thats why we always went over to Darien Lake , camped for a few days , so kinda like a combined holiday of theme park and relaxing camping . Our kids loved it , we made so many memories , they still talk about our times there :)

Wow, you certainly got around in your short time here. The gondola rides are really overrated imo. Haven't been on them either. Hubbie worked at the Venetian when they were getting ready to open it and as they filled the canal with water it had a leak and water went on the casino floor, which is under the canal. Fortunately it was before the casino had been completed and they minimized the damage!!!!
The show that is going around on the track at the Rio is supposed to be their version of a Rio Carnival.

I wouldn't mind taking my shoes off if they would make it clear that it was required. And I don't know why they can't put mats on the floor.....I hate getting wet/dirty socks!
Thanks for the blog Lizzim - really enjoyed it. :)
You were right to head home early. The traffic from here to LA on Sundays is horrific if you leave it later.
You have to take shoes off at most of the airports over here. I'm not impressed with LA either. LA & JFK are two of the worst airports I have been to. My first experience of the States was JFK airport, it was terrifying. The woman in immigration had a loud booming voice and heaven help you if you stepped over the line before she told you, even with a toe!!!! It was all metal doors as well, reminded me of a prison, although I haven't been in a prison just what I imagine and have seen on TV.When we moved over here my husband paid more money, $10 each ha!! ha!!, just so I didn't have to go through JFK, which was the military's choice, bless him. Came through Atlanta instead. It was much better.
Las Vegas has a lovely airport though. Virgin and BA both have direct flights to UK from here.

Of all the airports I've ever been to Mexico City has to be the worst. Had such a terrible time there in '07.

Supergran - you were looking for the holiday thread?
Did you know that if you want to find a thread it's quite easy.
1. Open the sub-forum - in this case Chill Out Zone and you'll see some headers.
2. At top left is Title/Thread Starter.
3. Click on Title and it'll sort all the threads alphabetically by title.
If you can't find what you're looking for start a new thread.
Thanks Sally! I didn't know that - I am always having trouble finding threads.

Thanks for that Sally. Just wanted to say that I have booked a cruise in May. We fly to Palma and then visit Gibraltar, Tangier, Portugal, and southern Spain. Supergramps has always fancied a cruise and I haven't so this 7 day one is a taster. Everyone we know who has cruised say we will love it so do hope so. I am looking forward to some relaxation in the sun.:big grin:

We cruised for the first time a couple of years ago with a bit of trepidation but loved it.
Have been on a few cruises. I think 7 days is about the right length of time. I'm sure you will enjoy being waited on and seeing some exciting new places. :swingin:
Saw a 11 day transatlantic cruise advertised for $399, about $200. Went from Miami to Barcelona. Can't really beat that price for food & board!!!! If it had gone to UK I would have seriously considered it, cheaper than flying although longer too!!!! Once retired though what does it matter if it takes longer. After I retire in June, I will look at these deals a little more seriously as it may be a cheaper way of getting home to visit and would only have to fly one way.

Only 26 days to our holiday cruising the Med. Have organised almost everything. Just need to sort out holiday clothes and stock up on sun protection. Do hope it will be sunny.
Have a fab time SG - we're doing a Med cruise in September after I retire. Which company are you sailing with?

Hmmm...Personally, I can't think of many country gardens that could hold anything like the Cuillins :big grin:
Hubby is looking at the Cullins.....his buckets list is getting higher instead of longer....

We went on a cruise two years ago, around the Med, weren't sure at all before hand. I had booked to go with my Dad and the kids. Dad passed away before it but we went ahead with hubby instead. We usually go foreign to climb mountains and see history and a cruise was almost our worst nightmare. We loved it! Was so laid back, got to see Sicily (mount Etna), Crete, Turkey, for Ephesus (amazing), Athens for the Parthenon and back to my favourite place in the world, Rome! The food was amazing and the only draw back was the coffee! Was with Royal Caribbean and just seemed wrong to be going around the Med drinking the worst coffee on the planet, they really needed to get off in any port and learn how to make a black coffee! Would go again if found one stopping at enough places we haven't already seen. :)

I'm sure you'll have a lovely time. We went P&O last time - fab and this time we're going with Celebrity which is an arm of Royal Caribbean - I've already heard the coffee isn't great but if that's all I'll be content.

Friend phoned me yesterday saying I must be on deck with a glass of wine to see the leaving of Palma.....Cathedral lit up and the port beautiful. Feeling rather excited now, just need to get over my all-over tan on the 23rd. Standing in pants only at my age is a little worrying.

The mind boggles!!! By the way you can't call it an all-over tan if you keep your pants on !!:red devil: ;) :shamed:
You'll love your trip --I went on a Med cruise from Palma last May for my 70th birthday. It was good fun!!:shelebrate: :wino:

I'm off to the Lake District tomorrow to bring my daughter home from uni :) taking her friend as well as a surprise so there will be a lot of cream teas eaten! Can't take much with me as we need the space to bring all her things home but I have everything from shorts to thermals packed. They had hailstones today but the forecast is good for Saturday and Sunday so we might fit a mountain in too! Dropping hubby at Penrith train station and he is then off hiking across the Dales. Really looking forward to it.
