I think JerryD will delighted, as it's being held at Liverpool's Echo Arena. Andy might get nominated, but I think Jo Konta might get on the shortlist.

Doubt Andy will get nominated - not as things stand - unless he does something extraordinary in 2nd half of year - not looking too likely with the hip injury.
I would have an issue with Jo getting nominated if Andy didn't. He's still spent the first half of the year at WR1, and reached the same stage at Wimby as she has. Andy is still doing amazingly well. It would be to me like we were taking him for granted now.

I don't think Jo will be nominated, and nor should she be in my opinion. Need to set the bar higher than reaching her second slam semi. I feel she has a slam win in her, she can be nominated then.

He was rewarded last year for reaching No1 - don't think that can carry over when so far at least he has really won nothing major this year.
Jo was first woman to get to Wimbledon semi in 39 years (Andy only got to quarters), so it is quite an achievement, but I agree with RB that it is not yet enough for a nomination. But there may not be much else of note in the year and they certainly want to have a number of women on so you never know.
Jo will be nominated for the same reason as the new Doctor is a woman, blimmin' BBC political correctness. :pirate:
Think about it though, we are half way through the year, and does anybody stand out yet?

Jo may be nominated but she doesn't stand a chance of getting it unless she wins the US Open.
He has got it 3 times. Regardless of what he does or doesn't achieve for the rest of this year, I would hope he has let it be known that he doesn't want his name put forward again. It's somebody else's turn. The 3 he got were richly deserved, but you can have too much of a good thing.
Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski got nominations for getting to the Wimbledon semis.

World Athletic champs bound to throw up a few nominees. Maybe the Open - or Lewis Hamilton.

Well unless he wins the US Open or goes on some incredible streak again to finish No1 (surely impossible) he won't need to let anything be known as he wouldn't be nominated anyway!
Hopefully Laura Muir will be the clear frontrunner (accidental pun alert) by the end of August.

I have to disagree with this sentiment. For me that's like saying 'I've won Wimby 7 times, so I won't try again because it would be greedy'. If he's better than the rest (and I'm not saying that he is at this moment this year), then I'd be happy to celebrate that again and again.
I sort of agree with you Helen but Andy is also fortunate that he is successful in a very popular sport. There are a lot of very deserving British sportspeople out there who will never be able to command the votes Andy gets just because of the relative popularity of their chosen sport.
The Wimbledon analogy isn't really comparable as it is purely for the best player in a particular sport (at that moment in time), SPOTY is subjective across many sports.

I'm sure Andy would be nominated again if he achieved something major one year - but it is a bit presumptious for him to say he doesn't want to be nominated again!
That's assuming that he would be nominated some time which is not very modest and therefore not like Andy at all!

I am not saying anything about what his views on the situation re SPOTY might be. I haven't a clue. I have just said what I feel about it. It's been going since 1954. It's quite a prestigious award. He has deservedly got it 3 times. I would just like to think he would withdrawn himself from future contests. He might think differently.
If he was going to withdraw himself, to be even halfway modest, he'd have to do it in his winning speech, which means leaving things as they are until he wins again.
Could see him being missed out this year although there aren't any outstanding candidates so far.

Hmmm, fair point. :)
I wasn't really questioning his nationality in my head, more the SPOTY rules and regs. I know they have an overseas award.
I think they might give the overseas award to Federer or Bolt.
I think, as he's now retiring from the track, Sir Mo Farah might win it.
I think Chris Froome should be nominated, although he is not that popular. Looks as though he is going to win Le Tour de France yet again.
Absolutely deserves it. i couldn't believe how many boos he was getting around the course though!
As I said on the cycling thread, the French won't accept that he isn't cheating.
As for SPotY, http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/40692045
I think Chris Froome will get nominated. I also think the women's cricket team will get nominated for team of the year and, maybe, one or two of them might make it as well.
I think the problem with Chris Froome is it looks like he is competing for the UK almost as a "Flag of Convenience" (although I have no idea why that might be beneficial). His parents might well be British, but he has never lived here. Most British people see him as a plastic Brit.
Adam Peaty has to be in the running. Every time he gets in the pool he seems to beat his own world record.
I agree, so far I think Peaty is my frontrunner.
............. and Tom Daley. In winning the World High Board Championships for the second time, he scored the highest ever recorded number of points in both the Olympics and the World Championships.

He also won a silver with his partner - Grace ? - in the Mixed Synchronised.
I heard about that, I thought it should put him top 5, but WRs top that for me.

Strange that so few women suggested. I would vote for Heather Knight, hope she is on the list.
Notwithstanding the fact I had to look her up, singling out an individual in a team sport never usually works.
Anthony Joshua is currently favourite with the bookies

I'm hoping that there will be more names to add to the list - both male and female - after the Athletics World Champs. I'm rooting for Laura Muir.
I am hoping it's at last Mo Farah's turn this year after all he has achieved and in the year he retires.

I think the women's football team, the women's cricket team and the men's 4 x 100m relay team will all get nominated for team of the year.

I will be voting for Mo this year (I would think unless there are drastic developments in the meantime). I'm currently reading his autobiography which is a nice easy read. Very amusing chapter on when he went to live with Kenyan athletes and suddenly released what was needed to win - train, eat, rest, repeat - every day. It takes a very dedicated person to reach the peak of many sports that's for sure.
I think the women's rugby union team will also get nominated.
I should think Lewis Hamilton and Chris Froome will make the shortlist, as they have done the last two or three years. Soon, we would have to be thinking about who will be on that shortlist and who will be in the top three.
Anyone thinking who is thinking of going, tickets go on sale tomorrow at 9am at £45 each (maximum of 6 tickets allowed per peron).
I heard, on radio five live last night, Lewis Hamilton's odds on him winning it have been shortened.
Not surprised. Various pundits are declaring him the GOAT.

It will be between him and AJ although Chris Froome should also be in the running.
Lewis's odds will surely lengthen now that he's been exposed as one of the many tax cheats!
Doubt it. Saw a poll today where the majority of those polled didn't have a problem with people playing the system.
Hadn't seen that. I thought public opinion would be the other way. Blatant lying about the public/private use of a personal jet is more than "playing the system" - it's fraud.
And yes, I know others will have done similar, Lewis just happens to have been exposed most publicly.

Doubt Andy would've done that well anyway had he somehow been nominated, Contenders (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/sports-personality/42100015)
I have to say there are several on the list that I've not heard of. Not really bothered who gets it. Nice to see Johanna included - but I think she'll have to have an even better season than this one to be in the running with the general public!

I agree, it's abit of a nothing to me this year. I'm glad Jo's been nominated, I think she'd have to win Wimby or a slam at least to get the award. I'm glad she's in the mix though and this should get her more into the public consciousness, and hopefully more support in slams.
I think I did say that I expected Jo Konta to be nominated, as I was going on what happened at Wimbledon.
I wouldn't be surprised if Eddie Jones, the coach of the England rugby union team, wins Coach of the Year at the Sports Personality. He recently won the world coach of the year at the rugby awards.
Rag 'n' Bone man will be singing at the ceremony.
I think Federer will win the Overseas one.

Agreed
As long as it's not Tom Brady!
Ellie Downie, Phil Foden and Millie Knight have been shortlisted for the Young Sports Personality award.
Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will open the show.
Anthony Joshua is still the favourite to win on Sunday, but he won't be there. Neither will be Chris Froome or Sir Mo Farah. Sir Mo does have a good excuse, as he and his family are still in the process of moving back here.

I'm pretty much indifferent to Anthony Joshua and Lewis Hamilton who seem to be making all the running, would much rather it was Mo Farah or Chris Froome. Whilst glad Jo Konta nominated not a strong contender this time.
Chris Froome's chances look like they've taken a dunt...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/42335916
No idea who I'd vote for if I wasn't too tight to spend money voting (even when Andy's been in the running) but I'll be surprised if Anthony Joshua doesn't win.

Mo wd be my choice.
I heard this morning, on radio five live, Federer had won the Overseas award. No surprise.
I've read Anthony Joshua might now turn up, tomorrow. Because of what is going on with Chris Froome, the BBC probably won't even do a live link up with him.
Bradley Lowery will be honoured with the Helen Rollason award.
Jo Konta looked very good in her dress.
The BBC have just made the tongue in cheek comment that Andy Murray had a less successful year to give someone else a chance to win. Glad he got a mention.
Is he going to be there to present the trophy or is he still in Florida?

Congratulations Mo, certainly deserved:cheer::cheer::cheer: A bit surprised though and wouldn't have predicted other placing either, well done Jonathon and Jonnie! Well done to Jessica Ennis in winning Lifetime Achievement too! :cheer::cheer:
If Andy had been shortlisted for his one slam SF (like Jo Konta :p) then he would have walked this. ;) Incredibly close and incredibly low vote for SPOTY this year. Andy won with 361,000 in 2015 and 247,000 in 2016.
Sir Mo Farah 83,524
Jonathan Rea 80,567
Jonnie Peacock 73,429
Anthony Joshua 73,411,
Adam Peaty 63,739
Lewis Hamilton 60,627
Chris Froome 47,683
Harry Kane 18,759
Anya Shrubsole 15,237
Bianca Walkden 13,962
Johanna Konta 7,591
Elise Christie 6,504
That's really interesting Bardot. Speaks volumes about Andy doesn't it? And proper order too!
How many people voted this year? I didn’t get around to it. Those figures show how popular AM actually is.
Andy won with 401K in 2013. The total votes this year is about 550K.
Maybe there should be separate awards given the 4 women on the shortlist finished in the bottom four places and by some distance.

the booing could be because of the fact the incompetent bbc lost the link. Pleased for Mo and Jonnie.
I'm very disappointed that Adam Peaty did not win that award.
At the World Championships Adam retained his 100m and 50m breaststroke titles, breaking his own world record twice in the shorter event and becoming the first man to swim the distance in under 26 seconds.

My daughter, Bubblebee, (who was a competitive swimmer) wanted Adam Peaty to win but I think swimming is not shown enough on television and lots of people I know don't know who Adam Peaty is but do know Mo.
Is it my imagination or is the length of the program shorter than it used to be several years ago. It seemed quite short last year too. I wonder if it is because the Apprentice final is straight afterwards.

I wonder if it bothers Lewis Hamilton that he can't even finish higher than a swimmer (no disrespect to Adam) in a popularity contest when he competes in one of the highest profile sports, of which he's just become champion for the 4th time. Probably not, but it should. The great british public do like some-one who seems genuinely humble, and who can embrace defeat as well as victory.
I too thought the programme seemed shorter and 'leaner' then I realised I'd only switched on 45 minutes after it started !
They interviewed Mo with all the audience there so must have cut it short on TV.

I think the programme is a bit shorter, used to be 7.30-10 but now starts earlier, was 6-45 this time. Rarely watch the Apprentice myself due to the presenter :) Certainly think Adam Peaty more deserving than some and excelling in his field as much as Hamilton (who has at least won before) but then swimming fan (even though don't swim personally :) and not that interested in F1) Hadn't previously heard of Rae the motorcyclist in 2nd place prior to nomination. Whilst it was good for Peacock a paralympian to be recognised no doubt Strictly was a factor. I thought Johanna Konta would've done a bit better, whilst obviously many achieved more she did have a high profile at Wimbledon even if 2nd half of year was poor. whilst the sportswomen had poor year in the public vote they've had 6 top 3 placings since win for Zara Phillips in 2006, Kelly Homes also triumphed in 2004. The press Sport awards have different categories , this year Chris Froome took it ahead of Joshua and Peaty whilst Hannah Cockcroft won over Tammy Beaumont and Konta.

I know the transmission failed. But they could have waited for it to be restored before ending the show,or at least moved it to the red button. It definitely was restored for the audience, as the audience looked full for the video of the interview. In the past they used to spend a bit longer at the end and run over a lot if necessary.
