Thiem was leading 5-2 in the final set then proceeded to lose the next 5 games in which he had 4 MPs. Quite the choke. I bet he can't wait until the clay court season starts. ;)

Is this the thread about the tournament? Fantastic third set tie break between Monfils and Nishikori which Gael won in his usual flamboyant manner. Amazing as Kei had match points.

Not Shapovalov at the moment, just won opening set 6-3 against DelPo

Magical Monfils but an oscar winning choke from Keith. Not only was he a set and 5-2 up in the second set only to lose 5 consecutive games (sound familiar ;)) but he served for the match at 5-3 and then was up 6-2 in the third set TB only to lose 6 consecutive points. Great scenes.

Bardot

Maybe he has an injury otherwise that was a shocker of a performance from Del Potro. He'd a tough draw but this match wasn't part of it and now Nadal's path to #1 just got much easier. Still a great result for Shapovalov.

patlowe
09-08-2017, 20:37
Yes, I thought Delpo was very lack-lustre too. No 'bite' to his game. Good for Denis to hang in there and get the job done.

A.Zverev v Gasquet was yet another match with an incredible ending. Zverev served for the match at 5-4 in the third and was up 40-0 with 3 MPs only to be broken. Serving at 5-6, Zverev saved 3 MPs, one after an incredible 49 stroke rally. Zverev won the TB 7-3. Great scenes.

So much for Nadal's tough draw. Shapovalov and either Mannarino or Chung stand between him and the SF and #1.

Looks like it was an amazing performance from Shapovalov, well done! Possibly Nadal not quite on best form though. Of course means Fed may not face great challenge now, lost first to Ferrer but dominated in decider though spaniard has never beaten him. It was pretty straightforward for Sacha over Kygrios, whilst a positive for Andy only delays the inevitable.

I didnt think Nadal played badly at all , some of Denis's shots were hitting the lines and the better he played , the more unsettled Rafa became, I actually think Rafa was a bit surprised at how much power he had

If Roger wins this tournament he will be just 10 points behind Rafa in the Rankings and #1 in the race. He would need just one more win than Rafa in Cincy to be the new #1. Odds of Rafa being the next #1 must have plummeted.

Shapovalov reaches a Master's SF in only his third ever ATP tournament. For context, I believe Cilic has made only one Master's SF (don't mention Cinci last year :grrr:) having played over 50 Master's events alone in his career.

Interesting for sure Pat. My feeling is that even if young Sascha plays as well as he can it still won't be enough if Fed is on form. Sascha has great movement for such a big guy and huge serve and groundies, but little variation so no element of surprise, Fed will know exactly what's coming so unless Sascha can blast him off the court (which is not a style I particularly enjoy), I sense a Fed win. Will have to wait and see. Would be interested in comments afterwards, as sadly can't watch . Hope it's a good match for those tuning in and let the best man win

Nothing was mentioned on Tennis TV about an injury as far as I know.

Must have been the Sky commies that were talking about it - saw some comments on Twitter about it, and Stuart Fraser & David Law both tweeted about it too. Speculating there was something amiss with him - but sounds like Sascha played great anyway so will be annoyed if they are just taking away his glory

JAMES4578

Great win for Sacha, well done! Didn't expect that and certainly not in straights, can't comment too much on their respective play as didn't see it (watching end of athletics) however will view later. Looks like Zverev coming of age but may still take bit of time to truly break through. It may not be prove to be that significant for Fed's US Open hopes but we'll see.

Alis
13-08-2017, 22:02

patlowe
13-08-2017, 22:18
Whether or not Fed is carrying an injury, Sascha did play well and kept the pressure on the whole way through. He served very well and never backed off. I think Fed was simply out-gunned tonight.

Genbrit
14-08-2017, 02:14
Fed wasn't moving as well from midway through the second set, although I didn't see the game that the commentators were saying he suddenly seemed to be having trouble with his movement. All credit to Sascha as he didn't let it affect his play and he truly deserved to win.

patlowe
14-08-2017, 06:50
The first 3 games of the 2nd set were amazing. There were some terrific rallies and equally terrific retrievals with the crowd oohing and aahing throughout. It is possible Fed did some damage then but I wasn't particularly aware of it at the time.
