WSOpen (http://www.wsopen.com/news/andy_murray_withdraws_due_to_injury/?CategoryId=12618&Year=2017&pg=1) - Andy Murray withdraws due to injury.

“Unfortunately I won’t be playing in Cincinnati as I continue my recovery,” Murray said. “I always enjoy playing there and I look forward to returning next year. I’m continuing to work hard on the court with the aim of being in New York.”

Not unexpected news really.

Looking for positives, at least he's saying he's working hard on court and not just rehabbing in the gym which does give some hope for the US Open.

Bardot

An even more positive sign would be if Andy asked for a wild card into Winston-Salem like Djokovic did at Eastbourne before Wimbledon. He'd have to decide by next Friday and his first match could be delayed to the following Wednesday, two weeks today.

I doubt Winston Salem is on the horizon , still wonder if Andy really will be fit for the US Open but he'll presumably take the best advice.

He says he is "aiming" for New York, not that he will definitely be playing there. Just fingers crossed he will be OK by then.

It's not the end of the world if he doesn't play though. Just think how few points he will have to defend next year - always a silver lining.

I did expect this, like Canada before it but it's still a shame. Having said that I haven't been able to watch any tennis lately so I guess it doesn't make a huge amount of difference to me. I'd be sad if he was playing and I couldn't watch.

Delpo v Berdych  also Goffin v Kyrgios in the first round.

Unfortunate for Nishikori but it's happened again. He injures himself (right wrist) during practice but after the draw has been made and Tipsarevic is the lucky loser who receives a bye to the 2nd round. Keith drops to 9 in the rankings and could be outside the top 10 by the US Open where he's defending SF points.

Qualifiers have been placed and Kyle plays Sousa later today.

Federer has withdrawn (another lucky lucky loser benefits) with a back injury so Nadal will be ranked #1 next week and Andy will be seeded 2 in New York if he plays.

Weird scheduling. The match of the round, Del Potro/Berdych starts at 11am and the other big tie, Goffin/Kyrgios is on Court 3 also at 11am. :barmy:

Delpo has beaten Berdy in three sets, 6-0 in the third. Although the last set was a bagel, it was hard fought and Delpo had to work hard for his breaks. Pity it was a first round match. Dolgopolov has beaten Anderson, Kyrgios has beaten Goffin and wee Diego has been beaten by Khachanov. Aw! Commies were saying Raonic has withdrawn.

Bardot
15-08-2017, 17:48
With Raonic's withdrawal, there are now four lucky losers (Tipsarevic, Fabbiano, C.Harrison, Ramanathan) with byes through to the 2nd round.

They get better players in some of the 500 events. I am off to Italy for 4 nights on Thursday morning very early. Don't feel I am missing anything now but would love to see DelPo or Dolly win.

Certainly weak field for Masters but could still be some good encounters, good win for Delpo over Berdych in pick of the opening matches. Kygrios had easy win over Goffin,Dolgopolov got the better of Anderson whilst Ferrer came through in 3 sets over Johnson .

Nishikori has announced he's out for the rest of the season with his wrist injury.

Based on their points totals, the year end rankings could be 11.Wawrinka, 13.Djokovic & 23.Nishikori.

Am I imagining this, or is it real, but I don't remember such a string of casualties like what we have now? Is it a coincidence or is there a reason or a pattern? Most of them are out for very long periods.

It does make you think with only 3 of the current top 10 playing. I know a few of them will be considered veterans in tennis terms but I have never known so many withdrawals before a major tournament.

No I don't think you're imagining it Pat. I can't remember a time when so many of the top male players were out injured. While you kind of expect a number of injuries as the season end approaches, we're nowhere near the end of the year. I do think the game is so physical now, their bodies are paying the price even though they train so well. Can't see any tournies getting dropped though, too much money involved for sponsors etc

Sascha loses to Tiafoe in 3 sets. Back to back tournaments are always hard

patlowe
16-08-2017, 21:23
There is one very jubilant Tiafoe in Cinci tonight! The result didn't surprise me as Sascha really had very little turn around time. It must be very hard to readjust after a big win. Gives him more time to prepare for US Open.

JAMES4578
16-08-2017, 21:24
Think Zverev was definitely jaded, though strong play from Tiafoe. It mat turn out to be better for Sacha's Us Open run though (had already won Washington before the Montreal Masters)

I remember some 4 years ago when staying with my cousin in US, Tiafoe was being heralded as a player destined for the top. A good win against Sasha but still with a lot to prove; let's see how he does against big John.

Best of luck to Dimi later today against Delpo. Tough match but I'd really like Dimi to take advantage of the depleted line up and finally break through. If he could win one big title maybe he could kick on. He's got such a tremendous all-court game, soooo much talent, imo he is the player who should have been unsettling the big 4 most over the last few years, but too fragile between the ears when the going gets tough:sad: C'mon Dimi, now is your chance.

Grisha is definitely a casualty of the era of the Big 4.

Dimitrov won 6-3 7-5. Delpo was a break up in second but then suffering from dizziness, comms thought because of humidity, and also saw him shaking his wrist a bit.

A very quick turnaround for the winner of Pliskova/Giorgi unlike for Nadal who will have several hours rest between matches.

Sorry to see Dom go out, he needs to get his mojo back  but Dimi happy made short work of Sugita, as he should. Great opportunity now for Grisha to go all the way and finally fulfil his undeniable talent. Come on Dimi.:cheer:

Tremendous performance from Kyrgios especially in the 26 minute first set when he was all over Nadal. He was on his best behaviour with tweeners, SABRs & 141MPH first serves yet the crowd were revolting, booing him and cheering any errors he made. This is what Nick wrote on the camera after the match.

I think the semis are the other way round, Lynne - Kyrgios v Ferrer and Dimitrov v Isner. A Nick v Grigor final would be interesting and, I think, either would be a first time Masters winner, wouldn't they?

Can't believe that the 4 semi finalists in the masters are all ranked out of the top 10.
Strange times for tennis as the old guard gives way

Perhaps one of those moments where, coincidentally, a lot of the top players' bodies have been telling them they need to have a bit more rest than they are accustomed to being given. The Paris Masters, being at the very end of the season, was the one in recent years that perhaps had the most uncertainty and with the top four all in their thirties now, perhaps that will extend to Cincinnati, "Canada" and Shanghai.

RosieBear
20-08-2017, 09:57
I agree, I feel the "changing of the guard" narrative that commentators love to spew is simply lazy, and more than a bit disparaging to the top players. The same guys go deep in tournaments time after time, play more tennis than anyone else so it's quite natural that there will come a time when they start feeling it. BUT these guys got to the top for a reason, not least the depth of their character, which often makes the difference in their results rather than talent. To write players off makes me fume. Hated when they did it to Fed, and loved that he put them in their place. Kei, Stan, Nole and most importantly Andy will be back with a vengeance, mark my words!

In the meantime their absence provides a golden opportunity for either Dimi or Nick..... should be a stunning final, both incredibly watchable. Dimi squeaked to a win in their only other encounter (IW 2015) and expecting another close one. I like Nick a lot, but am sticking with my original pick for the tournament, Dimi. Watching a player beat themselves is one of the saddest sights in tennis, and I've seen the hugely talented Dimi do it too often. C'mon Dimi, believe in yourself and get the win

I did a bit of checking and in the 54 Masters between 2011 and 2016 only four were NOT won by the big four - 50/54 were (plus the WTF so 56/60 if that is included). Tonight Dimitrov or Krygios will make it FOUR Masters in 2017 with still two to go this year. I think we are seeing the changing of the guard regarding Masters events as those bodies need more looking after!

I was glad Dimitrov won as I'm not a fan of Kyrgios. And interesting that the commentators were making so much of Dimi's use of the sliced backhand, which Kyrgios did not cope well with.

Think that goes some way to explaining Andy's success to date against Kyrgios. And of course Dani Vallverdu will have seen that and encouraged Dimitrov to develop that shot more.

I've read in a couple of places that Dimi emulated Andy's tactics Josephine. Nick loves to crunch shoulder height balls, but Dimi took a leaf out of Andy's book and kept the ball low. Didn't see much of the match, but apparently Nick wasn't too special. Was probably frustrated. I believe Andy's the only big 4 player that Nick hasn't beaten, so Dimi owes Andy one for showing him the way!
