SHANGHAI MASTERS 2011, SEMI-FINAL: Andy nabs Nishikori 6'3, 6'0

Andy is into the Semi-Final after a workmanlike win, 6'3, 6'2, over Australian Matthew Ebden.

His opponent will be Kei Nishikori of Japan who, by winning his QF today, has ensured he'll be the highest ranked Japanese player ever on Monday 17th October.

The 20yr old has had some injury niggles over the last few years but has risen through the rankings and is currently at #47 (career high #46 in May 2011). Based in Bolletieri's Academy in Bradenton, USA, he's coached also by Brad Gilbert who might well be passing on some tips to his young protegee. Expect many tweets over the next 24hrs between Brad and Neil Harman!

They've not played each other before so it's another 0-0 H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=N552).

Andy might have to up his game tomorrow to get the win but his experience and tactical skill will hopefully stand him in good stead.

The match is scheduled for 8pm in Shanghai, 1pm in the UK.

I rate Nishikori. He's going to go to a career high after this event. Highest ever for a Japanese player. Had a big injury a while ago, but back better than ever now. He's only 5'10 though, so not going to hit through Andy. Hopefully Andy can pull through.

Andy admitted he didn't feel his best today but overcame it so he should have enough skill and know-how to take on Nishikori. But it wont be easy when you are clear favourite - it never is !

I can't see Andy having much trouble against Nishikori. Kei has been beaten by a number of players Andy has beaten comfortably recently, including Ferrer, Nalbandian so, in theory, Andy shouldn't be troubled too much. I know it doesn't always work out that if player A can beat player B and player C can beat player A, then player C can beat player B, but that's all we have to go on given the 0-0 H2H.

I watched some of Nishikori's match today and we should not underestimate him. It is Andy's to win or lose but I think he will need to expend a lot more energy tomorrow than he had to today, and the question is how much is left in the tank. If this were Thailand SF, no problem, but I hope Andy gets off to a good start and can win in style. Good luck Andy!

I really am having some difficulty getting used to sitting back relaxed in a chair while watching Andy cruise through his service games - doesn't seem like the guy I used to watch through my fingers at all.
Tomorrow may be a little different but....dare we hope... the H2H is 4-0 on hard courts. The way he is playing he seems pretty invincible so.....come on Andy Three in a row --- and number 3

Missed it. Thought I'd catch some of the match and was amazed to hear them announce the result on the radio as I drove home. That was a very quick match! And I can't watch any of tomorrow's match as I'll be in church - I'm on Sunday School duty tomorrow. I've hardly seen any of this tournament at all, as I've been at work during most of it! :sad:
