A bit of a disappointment for Laura Muir as she was edged out by Kenya's Hellen Obiri in the home straight, nonetheless a PB:cheer: but still behind Zola Budd's British record in the mile. Great from Mo again, well done!:clap: Andrew Butchart done well to take 3rd place. :cheer: Great also with wins David Weir in last ever track race and Chris O'Hare in 1500 :cheer::cheer:

I'll be there. I've got tickets for the 4th, 5th, 6th, 9th, 12th, and 13th August.

I'm looking for any accommodation, between 3rd and the 14 August, near to London for up to £300. Because I'm going by myself and it's in August, everyone has to put their prices up. I can't seem to find anything and it looks like I'll be sleeping in my car.

At the London Anniversary Games Tom Bosworth set a new world record in the rarely-raced men's mile walk, beating the previous 17-year-old mark by five seconds in a winning time of 5:31.08. :bravo:

Sad to see David Weir in his last track race. He won the T54 800m in two minutes 2.37 seconds. He will now turn to the road for the last stage of his fantastic career.

“Obviously, I’ll be thrilled to receive that medal that’s rightfully mine but it’s also bittersweet.

This is today's Guardian article (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/aug/04/doping-hotspot-ethiopia-drug-testing-epo?CMP=share_btn_tw) which Gabby Logan referred to during tonight's coverage about over-the-counter availability of EPO in Ethiopia which she described as horrendous.

Mo certainly was awesome in the 10,000 in an exciting race where he was put under a bit pressure but responded magnificently. Some will still see controversy but just don't accept he is under a cloud.

Brilliant in the stadium watching Mo last night. For me it matched our "Andy's best wins" and that says something indeed. The noise was phenomenal. You thought it was loud and then it ramped up a notch or two more. Unforgettable evening. Both Mo and Andy share something (apart from impending sword malarkey) - they both have huge pressure on them to win and go out there with the weight of the nation's expectations on their shoulders and perform perfectly. :GBflag:

How annoying for KJT - I was expecting huge points for her in the high jump. The height she jumped in the heptathalon in Rio would have won the gold medal in the High Jump. Such a shame that she just doesn't seem to be able to put it together on the big stage.

JAMES4578
05-08-2017, 14:57
Disappointing KJT had a bit of a flop in high jump and difficult to come back from that, though commentators thought she stiil had a shot at the Bronze if all went to plan-seems unlikely though. Hopefully Katarina can improve her mental strength in the years ahead but now has a bit of history in that regard.

Alis
05-08-2017, 18:14
It's interesting that Jess Ennis's former coach has been very critical of KJT's performance so far. Maybe that's sour grapes on his part because she chose to go to France to train this year and didn't ask him to coach her when Jess retired. She is such a good high jumper though - it makes you wonder if she wouldn't be better just to concentrate on the high jump - she does seem to find the heptathalon a real challenge mentally.

A bit sickening looking at the winner. How many times has Gatlin been caught (twice...!!!)?

Somebody obviously not happy.

Alis

Rats! Why couldn't the athletic's Gods have given us a happy ending? A 20th title would have been a fitting ending to an amazing career but for Bolt to be beaten by Gatlin is so ****!! Gatlin just shouldn't have been there.

Completely agree because he did it twice and got his eight year ban reduced to four by.... cheating on other drug cheats.
Coleman beating Bolt would have been the passing of the flame... what message does this send to the next generation of would-be athletes.

JAMES4578

Bit disappointing from Bolt but can't take away from great career, though was sometimes a bit OTT for my liking. Not best result for athletics ,Gatlin's last offence was in 2006 for testosterone , first one was for amphetamine contained in attention deficit disorder medication. Bolt gave credit to Justin and didn't show any disappointment in public. As far as Ayana goes an such an overwhelming victory and whatever doubts about Ethiopia programme can't really make accusations without evidence. At least KJT was confident in 200 but still lot of work to do.

Paula Radcliffe almost went there this morning when she said "people need to know there is the same level of testing where ever you are in the world, whether you're Ayana in Ethiopia or Laura Muir in Scotland. Not quite as blatant as her "EPO CHEATS OUT" placard protest during the 5000M race in the 2001 World Championships. ;)

One of those interviewed - possibly Derek Redmond - suggested that the crowd should boo or perhaps be silent whenever any athlete who has served a drugs ban is introduced. That would certainly make a point. The problem is that, unless a list of those who have served a ban is published before the event, most of the crowd wouldn't know. Gatlin is high profile because of his rivalry with Bolt and the media has portrayed their rivalry as good versus evil.

Inside the stadium where I was, everybody though Coleman had won which wouldn't have been so bad, but when Gatlin came up, shock, silence watching replay then massive boos...and rightly so. I'm really enjoying the athletics. I'm so sad for KJT and Holly Bradshaw - they were so close to a medal and the whole Bolt/Gatlin saga is drama on a grand scale. I know, this will be contraversial but, dare I say, I wish tennis crowds would have the bottle to boo drugs cheats as they have done at the athletics in London this week. Maybe that would make the authorities wake up - tennis seems to welcome the cheats back with open arms.

Close for Holly 1 jump failure cost Bronze..... but for KJT her medal chances were realistically gone yesterday, after the high jump (unless she could manage a couple of massive PBs), however, a good high jump would probably have yielded silver, so yes the one event cost her, it was a massive loss of expected points.

Who would have thought that the high jump would have cost KJT a medal? She is such a good high jumper - the height that she cleared in the heptathalon in Rio would have won her the gold medal in the High Jump event - what a shame that she couldn't replicate that this weekend. I am really enjoying the World Champs but I do think it was a mistake to axe the flag hoisting at the medal ceremony. The hand held flags just don't seem to have the same impact and neither the athletes nor the crowd have anything to focus on during the playing of the anthem. It just seems to devalue the whole medal ceremony for me.

Another problem in athletics: testosterone levels in female athletes. If they don't allow para athletes to compete in non-para competitions due to extra spring etc, why aren't they harsher on this testosterone issue. Feeling Laura was robbed :(

At one time it was decreed that Semenya should take testosterone diminishing drugs before competing but then it was decided that that was an infringement of her human rights. I really don't think there is an answer that is fair to all.

Pity for Laura Muir but unfortunately not quite strong enough at the end, not sure tactics were quite right though. As far as testosterone levels in athletes such as Caster Semenya at one point they indeed were mandated take medication to reduce the level and then the rule was suspended after challenge by Indian Dutee Chand. Whilst obviously concerns all athletes have rights and some of the abuse they face is uncalled for.

Disappointing with a few just missing out now, however wouldn't have expected Kyle Langford to medal anyway and he done well with a PB. Mind you a bit of a quicker start may well have seen him there. Even a few more medals (Mo should be virtually guaranteed) will be below expectations and recent standards . Target was at least 6 medals though possibly a bit optimistic.

The situation with Makwala does seem a bit chaotic and Botswana's Medical team account differs from the findings of the IAAF (no blood test taken though-was said to have the same symptoms as others suffering from the virus) In the event it was pretty straightforward for Niekerk in the 400.

If Makwala turned up to race last night he must have been feeling better. I'm not a medic, but if he was on the mend, would he still have been infectious? I would have thought the risk of spreading the virus would have been higher just prior to his falling ill? Whilst the virus was incubating? (do viruses incubate?) I do understand the need to curtail the virus, but have been wondering if they were shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted?

I doubt we will ever know all the details and who is telling the truth, but apparently they say he had not been told that he was to stay in his hotel under quarantine. The Botswana team had said the only time he had vomited was once on the Sunday, but his medical report apparently said he had vomited later on the Sunday evening and over a period of several hours (but at this time on Sunday evening the Botswana team claim he was receiving physio and feeling OK and could prove this). Apart from vomiting once they claim he was feeling OK and not feeling ill (on Monday temperature and heart rate etc were normal). Makwala was feeling 100% all right apparently on the Tuesday and was passed fit by his medical team, so he was more than "on the mend" as he says he wasn't feeling ill in the first place. In fact a 48hour quarantine from when the Botswana team claim he had vomited on Sunday could possibly have expired or nearly expired before the 400m final.

Obviously some athletes missing out on medals have performed very well (such as Mitchell Blake) and in some cases above expectations, however still a bit frustrating not another medal yet. Good race with Guliev holding off Van Niekerk, no fairytale for Makwala in 6th. Bit of a battle in the triple Jump with Christian Taylor victorious but Jonathan Edwards record still intact. Whilst great Muir and Mccolgan in 5000 final likely be tough for them there (it was Laura's first outdoor race over the distance this season and she struggled in last lap) An achievement for Asher Smith to reach 200 final when she fractured her foot early in the year, Shaunae Miller-Uibo was back on track after pulling just before finish line in 400 yesterday in race won by American Phyllis Francis.

Exciting steeplechase and surprise with only one Kenyan in top 3, Americans taking top 2 places with great performances. Well done Chris O'Hare in qualifying for 1500 final, bit of controversy as Lynsey Sharp initially disqualified from 800 final after locking arms with American Lipsey (who qualified in any case but was later reinstated (both being fastest losers)

I was thinking exactly the same thing. We have had our disappointments with so many fourth places but compared to Australia, Canada and many other European countries, we seem to be punching above our weight. If you look at the placing table rather than the medal table, we are actually fifth behind USA, Kenya, Poland and Jamaica - not bad going, I would say.

GB certainly finish with a flourish and just reach medal target which looked unlikely not so long ago, great performances in the relays with silver/Bronze added tonight. Still could've done more individual medals though even if a few were mighty close (can't always bank on the relays) ) Noticeable winning performances from Barshim(High Jump), Obiri(5000), Semenya even if predictable (800) and Manangoi(1500). In the circumstances a good performance from Laura Muir in 6th, though Chris O'Hare a bit disappointing (pace became too much for him though).

I saw earlier this week, it was likely to be in somewhere like Gateshead.

Tickets for the Anniversary Games in Gateshead will be going on sale on Tuesday. Hopefully, it'll be back in London next year.

For anyone wanting to watch the British Athletics it is live on Youtube. Not being covered by the Beeb.

Shame about Mo Farah but perhaps his time is over

Yes pity Mo did not qualify, perhaps he would have better sticking with the Marathon though.

As the world athletics championships, Commonwealth Games and the European athletics championships are all next year, I would have thought the people behind the Commonwealth Games would want Laura Muir and Josh Kerr to turn up: http://www.scotsman.com/sport/other-sport/why-laura-muir-and-josh-kerr-may-be-told-to-skip-2022-commonwealth-games-3339949

I think that article looks worse than it reads because the Scotsman has focussed on Scots athletes. My personal preference would be the Commonwealth Games and the Worlds but they are very close together.

I watched some of the British trials on the Red Button, yesterday. It was nice to see Laura Muir do a practise in the 1500m. She jogged the last 300m or so and the rest of the field still couldn't catch her.

That was very odd, at first I thought she’d pulled up injured.

No, it felt like the other female athletes in her race were amateurs. I did think Laura would win yesterday's final. I wasn't surprised to see Jeremiah Azu get emotional after winning the 100m final. If I'd won and beaten those kind of people, I probably feel a bit emotional as well.

Congrats to Laura Muir for a well deserved bronze medal in the 1500m at the WC in Oregon.

It was a great run! Not many realistic medal contenders left, apart from perhaps the relays.

Keely Hodgkinson was so close to Gold but just edged out by Mu, still great to have another 2 medals and 7 in total.

Thought the Swedish pole vaulter was impressive breaking the world record. He cleared it with a lot of room to spare so can probably go a lot higher.
