The USTA breaks ranks and gives Maria Sharapova a wild card for the USO.
Well, that's not a surprise but it is disappointing.

I reckon the withdrawal of so many top men is partly behind this decision- it generates a lot of chat about the event and she will be a big draw in terms of crowds regardless of folks opinion.

Whilst potential for bit of a classic may not turn out that way, Halep has yet to beat Sharapova but Maria is probably not in the best of shape.
A good match between Halep and Sharapova but not the result I was hoping for. I really hope Sharapova doesn't go on to win the title.

Big win for Sharapova in quality match which I didn't really expect (6-4,4-6,6-3), when Halep came back from 1-4 down in 2nd to level the match wondered if Maria would be affected mentally but got early break on Simona in 3rd and held on to take it 6-3. Think unlikely she can go all the way though.

Disappointed for Halep. Think she should have taken up the suggestion of competing in 1 round last week to get her the few points she needed to reach no 1. If only for a week, it would have been an achievement and how many more chances will she get? Should be plenty but she's fluffed 4 so far this year.

Very disappointing match from Jo, she seemed really uptight and snatching at her shots. I haven't seen her play like that for a long time.
Kerber joins Konta and Halep out of the exit.
JAMES4578

Kerber the defending champion (even if few seen her as top contender) was never even in the match, going down to Osaka 6-3,6-1. Thought the Wimbledon match with Muguruza which was tightly contested might have given her some confidence but obviously hasn't been the case.
Poor scheduling wasn't the reason Wozniacki lost last night but respect to her for saying this. "Someone who comes back from a drug sentence and performance enhancing drugs, and then all of a sudden plays every single match on centre court." (https://twitter.com/CWTennis/status/903203313965031424)

Not a huge fan of Caro but I 100% agree with her on this.
I have nothing against Makarova but I'm sorry Caro lost last night - I like her and think she is an asset to the women's game. What she says about Sharapova is absolutely correct - giving her a wild card was bad enough but to compound it by giving her preferential scheduling is disgraceful in my view. What does that say to the other women on the tour? The cynic in me wonders if she would get the same sort of treatment if she wasn't leggy and blonde.
Pliskova now a set down to Nicole Gibbs.

It's not the cynic in you but the insightful person. Especially in USA where a stereotypical look predominates.

To be fair the Sharapova/Halep lived up to the billing and certainly deserved to be on Ashe, does not justify her being there so often but with the lack of some big names the organisers are obviously going for pulling power for as long as Maria is there. It wouldn't have been so much on Wozniacki's mind if she had got through. At least Pliskova avoided the casualty list after being outplayed by Gibbs in the first.
As number 2 seed, Halep deserved to be on Ashe whoever her opponent was - I have no argument with that.

If being "blonde and leggy", as others have termed it, was enough to get a place on AA then Caro would be on there too. Think it's more to do with the fact that Maria has five slams to her name and is a megastar of the game. Personally, although not a fan, I don't have any problem with Maria being treated the same as she was prior to her ban, ie on AA for the majority of her matches. Her punishment was the ban and she served it. Her punishment was not the ban plus x,y, z (eg poorer scheduling upon return to the game). If/when Dan comes back after his ban I'm sure everyone would, quite rightly, expect him to be treated as he was prior to his offence and not experience 'punishment creep'.

Well said, Rosie. Maria has served her sentence and should now be given a chance to make amends. As you say she has won 5 grand slams and is a megastar who will draw in crowds to see her.
Maria is not a bad person as witnessed by this article
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/mariasharapova/7952877/Maria-Sharapova-returns-to-her-roots-in-the-wasteland-of-Chernobyl.html
Certainly if Dan returns to the sport then I'm sure we will be glad to see him back on court and be prepared to give him another chance.
We are all human and as such make mistakes in our lives.
Some people and players view the 5 slams Sharapova won as tainted as she was taking Meldonium which is now considered a PED. Of course this view can be dismissed by the fact it was perfectly legal at the time but it's understandable why people may believe this and question her credibility. Sharapova winning a slam whilst not taking Meldonium would go a long way to restoring her reputation.
This anecdotal article is from someone who took Meldonium. Sounds amazing. ;)

It's not about being further punished, it's about being rewarded after serving a ban, which is the point Wozniaki was making. Why 3 times in a row on Ashe?

3 times because with Andy, Nole, Stan, Serena absent there is a dearth of big names to go around esp with Roger and Rafa in same half. If people pay AA prices they want to see a superstar - that is Maria. Had so many big names been missing at a tournament before Maria's ban we would have seen the same scheduling, in other words however much Wozniacki resents it, it's not a case of changing anything in order to 'reward' Maria for being banned, simply the status quo. Wozniacki may dislike the scheduling, but I bet she likes the big pay cheques that are subsidised by the box office superstars, so I'm sure she'll get over it.;) My only sympathy is with Halep; the real controversy is not the scheduling once Maria was in the tournament, but the fact she was given a wildcard.
Bottom Half R4:
Suarez Navarro v V.Williams
Kvitova v Muguruza
Georges v Stephens
Sevastova v Sharapova

Well they could easily have put Wozniaki on Ashe - she is pretty well known too and former US Open finalist. Half the people in Ashe can't see the match and spend the time chatting and going out for hot dogs anyway. So I suppose they need someone they have heard of to even stay in their seats.
Presumably they have all bought their tickets in advance, though.
A great match earlier between Zhang and Pliskova followed by a great match between Radwanska and Vandeweghe. Sadly, it looks as though Vandeweghe is going to win - I'm afraid I just can't take to her at all.

Two tough and entertaining matches,Pliskova saved mp against Zhang and another challenge for her. Looked like Wandeweghe might take it in 2 but eventually went through 6-4 in the 3rd after a few breaks exchanged with Radwanska. Wanted Aga to go through but wasn't really that surprised (got it right in pick'em) though Marion Bartoli didn't think much of her chances initially -Radwanska had held at 5-1 H2H Advantage. Coco seemed to be losing it mentally at times but was able to regroup with her weapons and Aga not the most confident right now.

Looks like Sharapova may be going out, pretty impressive set and a half but once didn't get break back at 4-3 in 2nd faltered and error count mounting, Sevastova the 16th seed 2 breaks up at 3-0 in 3rd.Now Poor service game from Latvian though and Maria holds for 2-3,however responds well and gets another break for 5-2 and finally closes it out. Sharapova faded somewhat in 3rd and not enough first serves but Anatasjia stayed with and was strong in the crunch, mixing up the play well.
Sharapova goes out to Sevastova - well done, Anastasia!
Yayyyy! Well done Anastasija! I can now settle down and really enjoy rest of ladies tournament! Sorry but that's just how I feel.
Pleased Shrieky is out. Was a good match from Anastasia, kept her nerve.

I like Garbine's game a lot but I don't like the noise she makes either!!! Very off putting I agree! Petra makes NO noise except for a wee shriek when she wins a hard point.

Agree 100%! Having had a hand injury myself I know how terrible they can be and for her to be able to play tennis at all never mind be in contention for a GS title is just INCREDIBLE!!!
There's a real scrap going on between Sevastova and Stephens at the moment - breaks galore in the third set - a real seesaw of a match. We could possibly have four American women in the semi finals!

yayyyy for Sloane !!!!! thru to the semis
Stephens wins - well done to her - she's just back from 10 months out with injury. It was a great match - well played to Sevastova too.

Many twists in that match , Sevetsova had leg in injury but came storming back and then Stephens fought her way back in the 3rd. An entertaining battle, well done to Sloane who's only been back a few months following surgery.
Sloane Stephens shows what can be achieved relatively quickly after a long break (which included foot surgery) from the game. She only returned at Wimbledon having last played at the Olympics in August 2016 and has since reached the SF in Montreal, Cincinnati and now New York.
Tumaini Carayol @tumcarayol
Sloane Stephens was ranked #957 last month. With her first US Open semi-final, she will be at least #34. 923 spots in one month. Insanity.

In the end Stephens went for her shots and it paid off, Sevastova (or Sevas tova if you listen to Mary Pierce) didn't have enough power to hit through the court. Amazing to see so many US women in the QF/SF, and all having a realistic shot at winning the title. With Tiafoe, Fritz, Opelka up and coming, the future of US tennis looks bright.
C'mon Karolina! I really don't want to see 4 American women in the semis - I have nothing against Madison Keys but I just can't stand Coco Vaneweghe.

Big win for Coco, taking out Pliskova 7-6, 6-3-was firmly for Karolina to advance and possibly take 1st slam but just didn't have enough today. would like Keys to go through though and clear fav in her match.
