View Full Version : Denis Shapovalov
I can't see a thread for Denis so thought I'd open one up for him. He is clearly going to be one of the stars of tennis in the not too distant future.

And he's Canadian so what could be better?
I have seen him play live twice. Last year in Toronto at Rogers Cup he played vs Dimitrov and gave him a tough match. And again at Davis Cup this February in Ottawa where he had the infamous disqualification.
I saw potential but I didn't think he'd be the next big thing. I hope he is; I hope he lives up to everyone's expectations and I REALLY hope he does not go down the same path as Genie.

I really can't see that happening. He seems like a totally different personality - much more grounded that Genie, who was always a diva.
I don't think he will be like Genie. In his pressers and interviews he comes across as a typical 18 year old full of fun and life but at the same time there is an underlying determination to succeed in his career as a tennis player. It will be very interesting to see how he and Sascha develop their tennis and if they become great rivals like Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.
I hope he stays free of injury and that he has a good team behind him to keep him on the right path.
It was probably a good thing in the general scheme of things that he lost to Pablo.
I have yet to read anything adverse about him.
Never have I ever

Just hope he doesn't get bogged down with endorsements like Genie has. He's a good looking kid just like her so there's a very strong probability that it could happen. His team must protect him.
I think he is SUCH an exciting prospect and equally exciting to watch. I really like him and will be following his progress with interest.
Ditto!!! Fiona & Caro!!
It is great to have some younger guys to follow too. He is going to be great.

It's almost like he's become the leading player in Canada, given the way that he's being viewed as the player to lead them in DC in future. I suppose that because Raonic hasn't always committed to playing DC, and it seems like Shapovalov is, he's going to get all the headlines. If Canada can put out a team of Shapovalov, Raonic, Pospisil and Nestor they are a match for any-one in DC.

Well to be fair Milos hasn't played a lot due to his injury woes. What concerns me is that with Danny gone who will they replace him with? Vashy is an awesome dubs player but we don't really have anyone else.

Dennis is young and being a hard hitting leftie may develop to be a great partner for Vashy

Maybe. He has played dubs with Felix A-A and that's a good point re: leftie as Danny is also a leftie. But I doubt they'll want to stick him in dubs when he'll be the main singles player (I doubt Milos will play for Canada any time soon the way his injuries are going).
Really nice article about young Denis. Agree that he plays more like the young Rafa than the young Fed.

Interesting article, thanks. Though personally I don't see one iota of Rafa in Denis' game. He reminds me far more of Fed, Dimitrov and Kohlschreiber - players that have that panther-like slinkiness and agility (& stunning shbh). In an interview during Queen's Denis said Fed was his idol growing up and he tries to emulate him on and off court. I can def see that influence - great to watch.
Although I agree that his style of play is different - for instance, he takes the ball much earlier - he reminds me very much of Rafa when he was young. I think it is due to the energy & enthusiasm he brings to the court, as well as seeming to be a genuinely nice person.
Denis Shapovalov cracked the top-50 for the first time on Monday to become the youngest player to do so since Rafael Nadal in 2004. :pirate:

Disappointed he lost in Shanghai first round earlier today. That was a winnable match.
It really surprised me. I was sure he'd get the W. though I didn't get to watch the match

Then again Troicki beat Thiem today so there's that!
I was listening to Denis' presser after his first round loss and I thought how uncannily like Andy he sounded. Then my husband came into the room and said, 'Oh, is Murray playing?' - he hadn't seen the screen and thought it was Andy speaking too. Their pitch and intonation are very similar and I often think that Canadians pronounce some of their vowels similarly to Scots.
Well done Denis who was presented with two ATP awards after the first semifinal - Star of Tomorrow and Most Improved Player.
18 year old Dennis is now ranked #51 a rise from #250 as a result of beating Rafa in the Rogers Cup and going through qualifying to reach the 4th round of the USO. He also qualified for the NextGen Finals in Milan.
It's a real shame that after the defeat of Roger by David Goffin the arena emptied considerably and Dennis did not get the attention he deserved.

Yes, l like him, he comes across as a nice young man
I enjoyed seeing him on sky sports yesterday. He said that he expected to finish this year in 100-150 so to finish just outside the top 50 was amazing and unexpected. His main goal for next season is to win a title of the atp tour. He said he hadn't discussed ranking with his team too much but he's hoping for top 30 or top 25.
They mentioned the other stars of tomorrow who made it to the finals. He said he would love that but there was a lot of work to be done to get there. When asked about his thoughts on the big stages/arenas He said that he grew up watching the greats playing in huge arenas so he enjoys that. He likes to get fans involved in big matches like that and he thinks that is what sport is all about.
When asked about the changes in the Milan event he said that he was glad they had tried new things. Sports need to advance and change. He described the shot clock as "really smart" and he liked having that reference. He also enjoyed the automatic calling as it meant for less arguments and doubts. Of the scoring however, he said though it was more intense he really wasn't sure if it's theway to go. He admitted it was a leveller but I think that is what gave him the doubts about it.
I have to agree I don't think we really want the playing field levelled in that way. Where is the reward for being better? More of an athlete? (My questions not his). He said that the scoring meant more matches came down to one of two points. I'm with him that despite the instensity that is not what o want feel tennis.
Wishing him all the best for next year.
Jackie and I stayed to see him pick up his award.
Well done   I really do think he is a star of the future.

Yes I must say I'm impressed with the way he thinks and the way he comports himself. Doesn't seem arrogant and full of himself. Hope he stays that way - and stays focussed on the tennis.

I was a fairly long interview and he did seem very grounded and humble. He was asked what happened with the wild card for the uso. He said he asked for one but they said they just couldn't do. But he went to say that was because they have to give them to their own guys first and they were right to do so. He seemed to completely accept and understand it. I don't myself, I'm not a fan of tournie favouring home players when there are more deserving ones. But he didn't expect anything and I liked that. Sascha seems the same, nice to have new guys coming through with out the arrogance and level of expectation that others have. I'm certain he can finish in top 25 next year. It will be great for Canada to have and milos at the top of game next year. I like them both.

So did we, seems a nice lad. Plus I always find it a bit rude the way folk race out when there are still interviews and/ or presentations going on. I get some folk may have plans that mean they need to go- but practically an entire stadium?
Although I must admit that I rush out when Fed is getting yet another award!

Denis has been named Canada's male player of the year.
In 2011, Milos Raonic was named the country's male player of the year. Not any more.
Raonic was hurt much of the year, and now, the former 2016 Wimbledon finalist has now dropped to No. 24.
Shapovalov Can't Wait For Federer And Nadal To Retire
Teenaged Denis Shapovalov gives all due respect to his tennis elders - but the 18-year-old still secretly harbors the wish that longtime icons Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal sooner or later pack in their careers to give the emerging generation at least a fighting chance of advancing in the game.

Well he has a point. I hope Fed retires next year. PLEASE! Rafa, at least, is five years younger.
I knew there was a reason to support Dennis, my sentiments exactly. And if Novak could go too.....
