Hi all, we are looking ahead past this year to adventures for next year. I was looking through trip advisor and I thought people on here maybe trips they are thinking of going,or have been on. They may have places they can suggest or review. Companies they've used or hotels they've stayed in etc. Or just be looking for hints, suggestions and inspiration.

We used audley travel to put our Peruvian adventure together. Usually I do it myself but it was so easy having someone else do all the work and less stressful. They were fantastic and helped when there were strikes and things beyond their control. I would travel with them again but they are expensive. They are worth it. But for next year we are looking to spend a lot less.

So it will be put together myself or maybe be a cheaper alternative agent. Does anyone have an agent they liked? I don't know anyone who has used on the go tours, I looked at them.

My brother and his wife are off on honeymoon on Saturday. The are traveling across Canada. Flying to Vancouver, train through the Rockies (one of those with viewing platform), flying up from Winnipeg to Churchill for the famous polar bear experience -the bears come right into the town and mooch around. They're also going to a couple of national parks, in Jasper and Banff. It all looks incredible, simply out of this world. My brother is a keen photographer so will no doubt take lots of pics. I'll post some when they get back.:)

That sounds amazing, I haven't heard of the polar bear experience. I'll be having a nose :) looking forward to seeing the photos :)

They'll have a great time, did a similar trip a couple of years ago. I love Jasper in particular and they should do some white water rafting there which is great fun as well as walking up Mount Edith Cavell to see the glacier. Banff a little more touristy.

If they're feeling fit enough they should take on The Grind up Grouse Mountain in Vancouver - it nearly killed me!!

One of my most enjoyable holidays was a winter activity holiday in Slovakia. It involved dog sledding, skiing (both downhill and cross country), snow shoeing, hiking in the mountains and swimming in thermal pools.

I did that when I was in Canada but it was many years ago when I was younger and fitter. I'd still give it a go though, never one to be defeated!

Oh that sounds great Linda. I am looking at winter short breaks for our 25th wedding anniversary next year. It's in December so perfect for winter stuff. I was looking at northern lights locations though but Slovakia would be a lot cheaper if we were willing to forgo the chance of the lights

Always fancied doing that in New Zealand. Now that is somewhere I would LOVE to go to.

Iceland was amazing for a winter holiday :) we saw the northern lights and many waterfalls and beautiful landscapes. It was bitterly cold. - if you are photographing the northern lights keep a spare camera battery in your glove so it stays warms as the cold kills the charge, really quickly.

We got the flights cheap with easyjet. I don't know if they go through brum. We didn't have the time or money for a hire car so instead got some tours from Reykjavik on Viator. If you go on a northern lights trip with gray line in Iceland and don't see the lights you get a voucher for another trip. We planned a trip to glacial lagoon (an overnight), but when we reached vik, a hurricane was hitting full force. They knew people continuing would have to stay in vik and not continue the trip for a day, to wait for it to pass. Sadly we had a flight two days later so there wasnt time for one night in vik and one near jokulsurlon. So we had to turn back. The agency arranged everything though. Taking us back to Reykjavik and giving us the money back for the entire trip even though we'd had a days worth of it. That was extreme Iceland.

We got our hotel from booking.com for a great price. It was about 20 minutes walk from the centre but it was a nice walk.we want to go back to Iceland for a summer walking and whale watching trip :) its on the endless list.

I've been wanting to go to Iceland for ages. I love snow and ice. I did the Hurtigruten voyage up the coast of Norway a few years ago. Sadly the weather was too bad to see the Northern Lights but it was still an amazing trip.

I spent 3 weeks backpacking round Iceland one summer. It’s a truly amazing place. Saw whales and Dolphins. I love swimming in warm water so it suited me down to the ground. I managed to get sunstroke there. I had wanted to go since Blue Peter did one of their summer expeditions there when I was a child. Managed to get across the interior. Can really recommend it.

Went in summer so no Northern Lights, but got those one Autumn in the Outer Hebrides.

We went in February 2015 as the start of an amazing year of holidays for my 30th topped off with the final of the DC in Belgium. I'd go back again in the winter as the hurricane meant we couldn't see the glacial lagoon or hike the glacier. There is an iPhone app you can download to help predict the northern lights in areas of icelenad during your trip and a little before. It was really good. We stayed in 22 hill hotel in Reykjavik. I would recommend it. We got a great deal so didn't pay full price.

That year we followed Iceland with a little easyJet and booking.com trip over my birthday in the August. We went to nice and took the train to Monte Carlo one day, boat to st tropez and boat to Cannes. It was a busy few days but really good. The beach there was nice too. It's pebbles but they are large and smooth. It was boiling. We ate in a fancy restaurant famous for its famous guests, when in Cannes. It was my birthday and we felt a little out of our depth surrounded by glamourus folk but the food was fantastic. Nice is such a good base as it's much cheaper than the others places but you can travel to th easily. I didn't realise until we got there that the beach at Cannes is sandy. I love the beach and the sea I would have spent more time there rather than st tropez. We did the touristy catamaran thing which was fun. All in with easyJet and a booking.com hotel a nice walk from the the town centre. We stayed in the hotel nice Riviera which I would recommend but we didn't pay full price. We got an awesome deal on that one too :)

It was. I went onto the lagoon, and did the boat trip, and did a 4*4 trip up onto the Glacier, (hiking is beyond me). I also rode an Icelandic pony, over some fairly rough terrain. I almost got run over twice, firstly by a wild stallion when I was sitting up on a hillside, and secondly when I didn’t look where I was going in a car park watching the eclipse.

I think the most awesome bit was the 3 hours I spent on the beach at Vik. I couldn’t get my head round the fact the sand was black, even though I understood the reason. The Blue Lagoon was another great experience.

I did it via backpackers hostels and a full circular bus pass.

Your trip sounds amazing Teresa! I have a massive urge to travel, always have, probably always will. We did a fair bit when we were young but hubby is now not interested in the slightest (he doesn't like leaving the dogs and is happy just to stay in the UK). Means I have wanderlust and a BIG list which once we don't have to work any more, I intend to tackle either alone or with any friend I can persuade. At the moment having to take time from work, holidays are all spent either with hubby or doing tennis stuff. When there's no work there will be more time .... that's the theory. If it all changes so be it. I can live with it. I really enjoy my UK holidays walking with hubby and the dogs. We can't always have everything we want and I consider myself pretty fortunate in life.

When we get our dog, we have family who have dogs who can baby sit but we will reduce the number of trips we do, dramatically. The UK is beautiful too. For our 15 year anniversary next year we are looking at Borneo. But I think tha will be the only abroad trip with the exception of how ever many rounds of DC we get too. We plan to spend more time in Scotland or see Ireland next year. With a name like mine you'd expect that I'd been to Ireland but I haven't lol. Anyway we will be looking for dog friendly places then :) fingers crossed. Besides I'm hoping Kev lets me name the dog Doyle so he'd fit right in. He likes Watson but that's clearly a retriever name :p :)

Anyway yesterday I got a Borneo travel guide to start having a nose. I know all the info is available on the web but I like to have a book!

I knew with my hips being as they are I had to do things earlier, now with the Rheumatoid and deafness I am reluctant to travel alone these days. I would still love to do Alaska, Antarctica and Faroe, (not sure why Faroe). It has to be said though that of the places I have been to Scotland still wins hands down. I am fortunate that I have people who are happy to have Madam. Hoping for Shetland again next summer.

Re: Scotland, we have been to the Trossachs, Rannoch Moor area, Skye and Mull. Would love to explore more. Where have you been and where would you recommend? Scottish folk, please feel free to join in ;)

It’s a bit like asking a kiddy in a toy shop which one they want......!!!

I think Shetland remains my top favourite. There is something about it that’s hard to define. The puffins at Sumburgh Head in season when you are only a few feet away is something else, as is the boat trip round Bressay and Noss, when you can almost touch the gannets (my favourite bird because they are so agile, and such show offs). I have also seen lots of otters on Shetland, plus a Minke Whale and a couple of Orcas.

My favourite view is the view is the one from Gairloch, as you go across to Inverewe looking up Loch Maree.

Favourite Glen is Glen Docherty on the way to Gairloch. You can almost imagine the clansmen still hiding amongst the rocks.

Favourite Castle is actually Crichton in the borders. Mainly because you look at it, and the way the floors have been altered and bits blocked up, and think in a dreadfully sexist way that it had to have had a women chatelaine at some point, driving the builders crazy with her demands. I laughed my head off when the guidebook confirmed it. However Edinburgh and Urquart undoubtedly trump the Scotish Castles, with Dunnottar in the mix as well.

I also like Aran - Scotland in miniature, although I am still scarred by walking on the beaches during the Wimbledon Final of 2013, without access to my phone.....!!!

Kinross and the East Coast is well worth a visit as well.

As a student I used to spend hour after hour just watching Loch Ness from the Windows of the Youth Hostel I was working in. It never palled.

The Outer Hebrides also have their charms. I was fortunate enough to see the Corncrake on North Uist. I have had some great trips there.

St Kikda was extra special. It was my pre hip replacement treat.

It’s hard to think of any bits I don’t like.......... my main love is the Highlands and Islands though.

Cairngorms!!!!!

JerryD
13-10-2017, 16:26
We took the kids to the aviemore side of the Cairngorms as there is more to for them to do, through we prefer the other side near braemar and the linn of dee. The walks there are less populated.

On the aviemore side there are beautiful lochs, my favourite is lochan uaine, it's a nice walk up to it past the reindeer centre, the waters look green, it's beautiful. Kev prefers loch an Eileen, with the ruins on an island in the centre of the lake. The walk around that lake itself is nice, but is you want a longer less popular walk you can walk around the smaller lake behind. When you park you will pay to park and support the park. It's only a couple of pounds. For that you get a map with all the walks around the immediate area on it. That lake is also a good starting point for other walks.

If you prefer holiday cottages to camping, there is a dog friendly place I can recommend. It's called crubenbeg holiday cottages and it sites just outside Newtonmore, far quieter than basing in aviemore. They one story cottages sit at the foot of a mountain. It's beautiful. They are very eco friendly and the owners are lovely. http://www.highlandholidaycottages.com/

If you are dog free but don't want to camp, we like the balavil in Newtonmore. http://www.balavilhotel.com/m.index.html I can't recommend the hotel's the other side as when we go there we always either wild camp or take advantage of the mountain bothy near the devil's point.

Same goes for places to eat, as we don't eat out on the other side I can only recommend places around aviemore. The cairngorm hotel is a great place to eat. We always want to stay there but it's never in budget. The food is good and the staff are nice. There used to be a really nice pizza pasta place but sadly it closed down. We like to get takeaway and drive it to the lake, we usually go to smiffys in aviemore which is amazing :)

From glenmore forest you can do a beautiful walk down to the lairig ghru even if you don't follow it the whole way. There are so many great walks all around the Cairngorms though. We just keep going there rather than trying other places in Scotland lol.

Planning for our states trip is continuing. We are going to Boston, New York, D.C. the falls and 2 nights over the boarder in Canada. I hate picking hotels so if anyone has any recommendations for these places I’d be very greateful.

Same goes for restaurants/ things to do etc. Obviously we are hoping to do a few days USO while we are there

Well I am off to Flanders and the Somme next Friday on a 4 day trip to see the First World War Battlefields. Not sure enjoyable is quite the right word, but I am looking forward to it. It includes the Last Post at The Menin Gate, which I am expecting to be incredibly moving.

Then Shetland at the start of July, (bad timing but it was the only week my friend could do). One day at home then off to Liverpool for a few days to see the Terracotta Warriors from China.

Not quite as exciting as other people, but I am going to be wrecked at the end.

When you're in Canada (I live close to Niagara Falls) you should definitely visit Niagara-on-the-Lake and perhaps stay there - Pillar and Post, Queen's Landing Inn, Prince of Wales Hotel, Charles Inn. Charles Inn has an amazing restaurant!!! Queen's Landing Inn does the most fantastic Sunday brunch and Pillar and Post does delicious breakfast buffets. I find Niagara Falls a tourist trap and very crowded. The Fallsview Hotel there is nice. It has a casino and shopping mall and overlooks the Falls. Nice restaurants and diners there too. You should visit the Botannical Gardens just outside of NFs. There's also a butterfly house next door.

I expect NF will be very touristy. I understand the Canadian side is better than the US one, but I still expect it’s going to be a bit more touristy for me. Still a place to see once though. Thanks for your recommendations :) I’ll check them out. Narrowed Boston to 10 hotels thanks to friends and finally settled on one. Fairly central, more expensive than I’d like but all of Boston was insane. New York is just a sea of hotels :(

Did the trip to WW1 battlefields and cemeteries a few years ago with a cousin. We were the first to visit and lay a wreath on our great uncle's grave. It was a very moving and yet enthralling visit.

We had a wonderful little hotel over the Easter weekend. Camping in the Cairngorms. There was snow on the tent most mornings but it was a great trip. The worst of the weather waitied for us to be packing up and driving home. We did a number of short walks and one big one up the lairig ghru. Though we forgot to fill the kettle from the stream on the way up so we filled the kettle with fresh snow for our tea :) can’t wait to get back there in May :) hopefully it will be warmer in the tent then too

Jerry deffo go to Niagara on the lake, it's beautiful. And the mid of the mist boat tour is stunning. I loved visiting the falls, I was just awestruck by the sheer volume of water going over. It was mesmerising.

Just back from my west coast America trip- we cruised from LA to San Francisco, Monterey, San Diego and Ensenada. Really liked San Fran and San Diego-. We were then based in Anaheim for a few nights. Our hotel wasn't near anything other than Disney so I am now an Uber expert lol. We visited Santa Monica- people watching on a whole new scale - and Laguna Beach- beautiful. Plus an obligatory trip to an outlet mall for my shopaholic friends. Quickest 12 days ever. Highly recommend the Pacific coast.. can't believe it's over. But several tennis trips to look forward to.

Yes definitely we will be there from mon - Thursday first week. I’m really excited about the trip. Kev is taking me in a helicopter over the city while we are there as my anniversary present. Very sappy and touristy but still exciting. I’m currently looking at restaurants and thinking about daily itinaries. It will be a trip full of highlights, hopefully with whale sighting in Boston to make up for him sacrificing the blue whale ocean giants trip to the Azores for this one :)

We did a helicopter over the falls. It was good but standing at the top and dong maid of the mist was just as impressive- though possibly our helicopter ride in New York a few days before spoiled us fir further trips. Goodness, that trip was 20 years ago this summer and still the memories are vivid.

The helicopter over NY was something I only considered for a second and then left as the trip was already running into the pricey side. But i’ll take it as a present :) we are saving our fancy anniversary dinner for NY too. Maybe have my birthday one in Boston :) Now I just have to think what to get Kev for putting up with me for 15 years. Maybe a medal lol

Jerry, We are hoping to go in June. Did you manage to get tickets for a specific time? The tickets I have seen you are not able to book a certain day and time, you just buy the ticket for any day/time and then just show up. Makes me a little nervous in case its so crowded you can't get on.

For your west coast trip I loved Yosemite & the Giant Sequoias at Sequoia National park or further north Avenue of the Giants are amazing. Here's one of my blogs from a trip there if you're interested. https://lilypadtravels.blogspot.com/2016/05/sequoia-national-park-nr-three-rivers-ca.html

Ours was booked as a dual thing so it’s a tour and the boat trip. Though it has a set date and a time, the time is for the pick up and not the boat in particular. It was on Expedia. Think I saw them on viator too.

Thanks, I saw some tours so will probably book one of those I think. We're staying in a military hotel on a guard base there. Getting excited. Last time I was on my way there, mum got sick and i ended up coming back to be with her, so this is kind of bitter sweet and I keep wondering if I'm jinxed and something else will happen.

Loved California. We did a 3 week trip there years ago. Visited LA (wasn’t a fan), San Diego, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon (did a flight there from Vegas over Hoover Dam, flew over the canyon then had time there in foot too). Then drove through Death Valley to Yosemite, on to San Fran and down the Pacific highway via Monterey, Santa Monica etc back to LA. It was an amazing trip with so many highlights.

Have also been to NY and Boston, loved both. Stayed in Cape Cod during that trip which was amazing and went whale watching there. Have never been to Niagra and would love to see the falls.

These posts have brought back so many happy memories of our travels in the USA. One trip started off in Colorado where we visited and stayed in Aspen and Vail. Flew to Las Vegas for three days, loved it, then flew to Los Angeles. We enjoyed that visit also seeing all the sights including Universal Studios and a tour of the Stars' homes, taking in Rodeo Drive. Then road trip to Salinas, Carmel, Monterey and San Francisco. Came back on the coast road, Santa Monica and back to Los Angeles. When we did New England in the Fall visited so many interesting places including Cape Cod, Boston, Concord and Salem. Been to New York five times and San Diego with Davis Cup. Love California but also have had great times on the Eastern seaboard. Both Alan and I just loved America.:/

I LOVE California (and Hawaii) - I'd totally live in either of those states (altho' not right now I wouldn't). And I LOVE L.A. mainly because I'm a film and tv fan. I took my 16 yr old daughter to L.A. a couple of years ago for her b-day and I got tix to be in the Ellen show audience and we stayed at this cute Tangerine boutique hotel in Burbank and ate at a really old diner called Bob's Burgers and sat in the same booth that the Beatles sat in when they appeared on Ed Sullivan's show. And we took the hop on and off bus tours all round L.A. and the coastal areas. LOVED every single second. So much movie history from the golden era. I've been to Ca several times. The first time I went to San Fran, not a huge fan, bit it was OK and then we drove from there down to L.A. along the coast through Carmel, Monterey, Santa Barbara, etc. LOVED IT!!! And we scored tix to the Tonight Show - the last season with Johnny Carson no less. And on that day Kenneth Brannagh was one of the guests. We've also stayed at Palm Desert (near Indian Wells) - fantastic!

Well made it back from an exhausting trip to the battlefields. The whole thing was quite mind blowing, seeing the sheer numbers of names on the Memorials at The Menin Gate, Tyne Cot and Thiepval. The whole of Flanders and Northern France seems to be endless cemeteries to the dead of the Great War. Walking on The Somme Battlefield, and realising that the mud on my shoes probably contains DNA of the dead was sombering. Also saw the beautiful memorial to the Newfoundlanders at Newfoundland Park, and The men of the Ulster Regiments at The Ulster Tower on The Somme.

On the last day we went to the preserved trenches at Sanctuary Wood. Even on a spring day they were wet and muddy. Horrible places. Made me feel very uncomfortable.

All in all very thought provoking.

It was incredibly moving. A lot of people there, with complete silence apart from the buglers. I read that in WW2 when Ypres was in the hands of the Axis Powers, as soon as the Menin Gate was liberated, even though they were still fighting elsewhere in Ypres, they began the Last Post again.

As a local, I think you'll really enjoy Kent, Jane. As Teresa mentioned, Chartwell is interesting. So too is Dover Castle with the Napoleonic tunnels and WW2 rooms underneath. There are fun and interesting powerboating excursions off the the coast of the iconic white cliffs too. Canterbury also historic and lovely. And of course, Paris easily doable as day trip. I went to the Louvre last November on a Monday morning with a pre-booked ticket - never again!
It was already heaving with large groups of tourists who moved en-masse making it nigh on impossible to see artwork properly. Once in you first have to leave coats/bigger bags in lockers and the room access was narrow and all very cramped. Eating places had queues and all in all it was not a good experience. I ended up feeling very claustrophobic and left after 90mins! There's lots more to do and see around Paris and anyway the rest of the week I was watching Masters tennis at Bercy.

If it's raining a really good place to visit is the Museum of Architecture. It's (a) vast, (b) not over-run with people, (c) has some amazing statuary and chunks of buildins in it, (d) has a brilliant cafe with decent food and (e) finalement, has stunning views straight across to the Eiffel (or Eyeful) Tower.

Of course, if it is raining, there's also plenty of 'le shopping' to be done ...
Galleries Lafayette is vast - you can burn a weeks' worth of calories going from one end to the other.
Bon Marche (NOT the chain of stores of the same name) is wonderful with a fabulous foodhall with mini-brasseries.
erm, neither of these aforementioned places are cheap.

When my daughter went travelling she waxed lyrical about the north island of NZ until she went to the south island which she thought was absolutely amazing. Our son lives in Wellington and says there is so much to do and see there that you probably won't make the south island - which he concedes is worth a visit - good luck!

As far as Paris is concerned - I can't see past Montmartre - particularly on a Sunday morning. With the bells of the Sacre Coeur in the background and the portrait artists plying their trade - there's nothing quite like it.

Wow Pat when you went to Denver did you do any of the national parks? That’s on my list too. We went to Iceland in February which was great for snow and northern lights and seeing the waterfall fairly frozen. But not so good for whales. Kev wants to go back in the summer.

It was all amazing. We hadn't the time to everything we would have liked to. I have a friend who has just returned from Boston. She had a 'whale' (sorry!)of a time there when she said the highlight of her trip was being out on the whale spotting boat beside humpback whales. She found it a very emotional experience. Have fun Sally. Hope it's restful after your recent busy time. When we went to Denver years ago, a train broke down blocking the line just outside the station. This delayed our train through the Rockies by 12 hours meaning we went through at night instead of daytime - most frustrating. However, there was still plenty to see and it was a great trip. Hope yours is too.

Met a 'girl' on my cruise in summer who was travelling alone. She'd never cruised and decided to do it as she fought no herself with no one to holiday with. By half way through the week she had booked next year's ( another solo one) She found it so safe, she had company when she needed it- by booking tours, set dining - and folk then befriended her, arranged drinks and lunches etc. But she cold enjoy alone tim when it suited her too. Maureen you will have a ball- and no doubt com home with some new friends made and some great new memories to add to all your lovely ones. Just make sure you are sharing the fun on Facebook fir us poor mortals shivering through the dark mornings and the start of a British winter

I'm off to Cornwall next weekend for a week of walking if the weather is not too bad and relaxation as well of course. We're staying right down south near Lizard.

Then in December we are going to Norway for 3 nights at a wilderness resort for our 25th wedding anniversary. It is quite far north and away from the city (Tromso) so apparently an excellent place to see the northern lights. Never guaranteed of course but we also have husky sledding and snow shoeing to keep us occupied. Really looking forward to that. Debated Iceland too but maybe we'll do that one summer if I can get Steve back into going abroad again! If not, when we're not at work anymore I will be off on my own with one of these solo companies!

Someone was asking about the National Parks near Denver earlier in this thread. We flew into Denver and visited Rocky Mountain National Park and also Yellowstone which was our favourite. Highly recommended - absolutely stunning. We went in September went it wasn't crowded like it gets in summer. Would love to go back there. Saw so much wildlife including a bear with 2 cubs just sauntering across the road in front of the car!

Leaving a rather chilly Boston around midday and hoping to see plenty of "fall" colours on the train ride to Chicago - where it promises to be just above freezing when I arrive around 10am on Wednesday morning!
:brr:

I'll have to plan some brisk walking around the city tourist trail to keep warm, and maybe fuel up with a 'donut' and hot chocolate. I only have Wed daytime and Thu until 1pm to fit a lot in... I'll be glad of some fresh air to see off the sore throat/cold that has been threatening to take hold since I started my trip. Going in and out of air conditioning doesn't help!

But, it's all part of the adventure!
:big grin:

Boston is lovely and I have enjoyed my time here before and after the cruise.
Bermuda was as beautiful as ever. I'll be back...

Fabulous Sally. I loved Boston too. They serve some of the LARGEST steaks I have EVER seen! Enjoy next stage of your trip.

At Changi Airport waiting for Singapore Airlines flight to London. End of my trip.
Doing something I've never done before and eating a Krispy Kreme for breakfast...
It has a hole in the middle so that's zero calories, right?

Finally had a Singapore Sling in Raffles Long Bar, it's been on the bucket list for 45 years!

I can't wait to get some cold weather!!!

Home from holiday. Arrived at Manchester airport at 0730 Tuesday. Spent day and night with my son and daughter-in-law. Home yesterday evening. I intend to write a blog but today have been shivering then sweating, sneezing, sore throat etc. Watched two of Jamie's matches but slept through singles today. Watching doubles now but still feel terrible. My next door neighbour brought me lemsips, soup and throat lozenges. Hoping this doesn't last as need to feel human again.

Welcome back, Maureen. Sorry you're ill - I expect it's one of those bugs that gets churned around the air system on planes  Looking forward to reading all about your trip.

Hi Mo, :flowers: one word for you, Echinacea.

The sooner the better though. I take 2 before every plane trip.
Or if I get close to anyone who can pass it on.
Which is difficult when you look after grandkids twice a week.
:ill:

I've found Morrisons to be the cheapest but most supermarkets stock it.

I was hoping some of our Scottish friends could help. My hubby is off on another yomp next week, this time across Skye, and I was thinking it might help if he knew how to pronounce the places he's staying in!

Firstly there's Uig, which I was thinking could be pronounced wig or oog? Or even uig!
His other one is Feochan which I was thinking could go badly wrong

at least his accent should help coming from the coast at Ballyhalbert, it's closer to Scotland than it is to Belfast :rolling:

I would say oo-ig for Uig and fee-u-chan for Feochan. Of course the ch as in loch (not lock!) and not as in char. You can probably find a website that gives pronunciatons.

Thanks! Yes I had thought of googling it but they're not always great with things like this :)

I stayed at the Youth Hostel at Uig once upon a time, the only good thing about it is the ferry to Lewis.
