Hope Andy has taken some pleasure in his 6 months off.....and lets hope that his break does as much for him as Rafa and Fed got out of theirs

We can now start to see where Andy will be seeded for the Aussie Open. Looks like he'll end the year at number 15 (only Isner or Sock can change that if they reach the Final or win Paris respectively). With 150 to lose from Doha he will drop below Pouille unless he replaces those in Brisbane.
But looks like he'll scrape into top 16 for the seedings although being 17-20 doesn't make a whole heap of difference.
Clump of earth’s law being what it is, he will get either Federer, Nadal or Djokovic or all of them in the early rounds.

There is certainly the potential for 3 of the 4 to be drawn in the same half. But Djokovic could well be in the 13-16 category too making it impossible for him to meet Andy before a semi final. But you would certainly want to avoid Federer/Nadal as the potential last 16 opponent.........although from where we are now, making the last 16 would be a decent step forward.
Rafa is injured, Fed is old and Djoko is away with the fairies . . . I'd be more worried about the young guns!
Your comment made me laugh, Djoko.

Personally, couldn't care less who Andy faces - old dogs or young bloods, bring them on - Andy will be well rested and absolutely raring to go so very tough to beat and I'll be beyond thrilled just to be watching him again. There's been a serious Andy-shaped hole in my life in 2017, so whatever happens the AO is going to be amazing.:no worries:
Me too - couldn't care less either who Andy faces as long as we see him back on court fit and healthy and playing the kind of tennis only he can play.
I've really missed Andy.

Andy will almost certainly have to make the final in Brisbane to maintain the number 16 seed ahead of Isner.

To be honest its fairly easy to pick up tickets on the day. In fact if you have a specific court booked-say Hisense- and you fancy a match on Rod Laver we found it pretty easy to switch. Everything is much more relaxed than dear old Wim bledon
The 4 grand slams have agreed to cut the seeds in the main draw to 16 from 2019. Just as well it's not next year as Andy might have been unseeded. ;)
Other changes at slams.

Points 1 & 2 are going to have a major impact on Nadal. Not sure he can organise all his bottles and towels into the correct alignment inside 1 minute.
Rafa will never be ready 1 minute after walking on, it's impossible. I think most players take two or three minutes, and Rafa takes a minute or two more. If they stick to this there will be a lot of fines.
It's sensible to move the time between points to 25 seconds, the same as the other tournaments. The clock might help players who aren't sure how much time they are taking, although some might finds it adds to the pressure. There are some players who think they're quick when they are actually slow, so they will be surprised! Hopefully the umpire will still be able to use his discretion when, for example, the crowd takes a long time to settle down after a particularly exciting point.

Really good to have the timing enforced before the match starts - what a lot of time is wasted so often. Very boring.
I think the first round prize money is a good idea. Hopefully it will cut down on players playing the first match when they are clearly not fit purely because they need the money. More lucky losers will benefit from being in the draw and have the chance to earn first round winner's prize money.

Yes, and the fact that if they play and they are unfit they might lose that money anyway. It would be good to do something similar for the points, but I guess five points at that level isn't that much anyway.

I look forward to seeing the start of a Rafa match at the AO, it'll be fun!
I've always thought that the 20 second rule in GSs is crazy, so I support this 25 second move too. I really don't understand how it's going to work with a rowdy crowd though. I mean is it umpire discretion when the clock is started or will the timer start when the last ball dies? If it's the former then it's still unfair as the more popular players on bigger courts will get more time. Will there be a challenge system, or lives for each time violation?
I've read elsewhere that the changes only apply to the qualification draw, not the main draw.

It's a shame about his coach. As we all know with Andy a coach that suits is really important. I wish him (and Andy) well in finding a new one.
Losing Magnus Norman will be a huge blow to Stan. He really was the mastermind behind his 'late blooming'.

Agreed, tough blow for Stan - he and Magnus Norman truly connected. Neither Stan or Andy are credit-hogs, rather both were quick to acknowledge how much they gained from their coaches. I hope both, but especially Andy, manage maintain their mentors' influence going forward as neither are likely to find such a formidable connection again.

But the Grand Slam Board granted the Australian Open’s request for a waiver of the rule change. The shot clock will only be used in the qualifying rounds on a “trial basis,” much like the U.S. Open did last year.

The draw definitely seems bottom heavy. Throwing a lot of my faves in together. Also looks like a potential meet of the zverev brothers :(
http://www.britwatchsports.com/australian-open-2018-mens-draw/
Defending champion Roger Federer has already played down his chances of repeating his fortunes of last year, and opening against ex-Brit Aljaz Bedene, he can look forward to maybe a third round against Richard Gasquet and a fourth round against either Sam Querrey or Milos Raonic.
Instead consider this – David Goffin‘s end of season saw him down both Nadal and Federer on his way to the ATP World Tour Finals, and he looked impressive at the Hopman Cup. Would anyone be shocked to see him edge ever closer to a first Slam final?
Nope. This could be goffs year. I also liked berdys chances having seen him this week. But his first round though wash on paper (ranking wise) could be a tough one. dm is riding high, making semis in Sydney, a home player and a rising star, playing with all the confidence of an 18 year old with nothing to lose. Now I don't like berdys chances as much as before.

Tomic out in final round of qualifying. No great loss there.
At the risk of sounding like the Daily Mail :p but with only Kyle in the men's main draw, GB are on a par with Tunisia, Israel, Cyprus, Norway, Georgia, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Bosnia, Uruguay & Uzbekistan and someway behind the likes of Austria(4), Italy(7), Argentina(7), Spain(9), Germany(10) & France(12). Kyle will not be facing Pouille in r3 if he beats Istomin, Bemelmans just won 6-4 6-4 6-7 7-6
Great opportunity for Kyle to reach the QF as all the seeds (Anderson, Kohlshreiber, Pouille, Sock) are out and he's the highest ranked player remaining amongst Istomin, Bemelmans, Nishioka, Seppi, Karlovic, Sugita & Basilashvili.
Correction: Sugita(41) is the highest ranked player who Kyle(49) could meet in the 4th round.
Yoshihito Nishioka is a great injury comeback story which should inspire other injured players. ;) He beat Kohlshreiber 6-3 2-6 6-0 1-6 6-2 and it was his first ATP match for 10 months since tearing his ACL in his 2nd round match against Sock in Miami. So cruel as he was in the form of his life having reached the 4th round (from qualifying) of Indian Wells the week before, losing to Wawrinka in a third set TB.

on a slightly off beat note, Ehrlich & Nestor are playing together in the doubles, combined age 85 !! They are giving away 35 years to their 1st round opponents, Albot & Chung (49 years combined). Has there ever been a greater combined age for a pairing. If they reach the final and play the Bryans, the total combined age would be 163 years. Tennis is a young mans sport ??

Tough one for Wawrinka but got through in 4 v Berankis, in contrast Djokovic only lost 7 games but will be up Monfils next. As I expected really Bedene couldn't do too much against Fed with Roger taking it 6-3,6-4,6-3. De Minaur took 2nd against Berdy but comprehensively outplayed 6-0,6-1 in next two. Still a good experience for him!
I was sorry that De Minaur's opponent in the first round was Berdy. That was a tough opener for Alex. Berdy just had too much for him. However looking forward to seeing him play throughout this year. Bit of a surprise that RBA beaten by Verdasco? And Milos gone after round 1 too.
Yes I was surprised about RBA but knowing how Verdasco can play when he's hot, maybe not as surprising. Not shocked about Raonic really as he lost early in (was it) Brisbane and has been out for a while.
How did Djoko look? I picked Monfils to beat him but that was assuming he was nowhere near 100%
Frustratingly I was not surprised by the verdasco win. I had been considering placing a bet on him to win as the odds were mad and I really liked him chances. Kev said I should but I thought as I wanted him to win, losing even £2 on it if I was wrong and he did lose would add to the sting too much lol.
No surprises in raonic going out either, I didn't expect him to bounce back from injury very quickly. Especially not over a long match. He had some positives too so he can feel good about those and work at getting fitter for the next tournie. I'm sure he'll back near form in the not too distant future. No surprises in the wins for goff, delpo and sascha either. Though sascha wasn't as good as I expected him to be.
Gutted about Lopez :( I'm not a lacko fan at all either so it sucks all round. Did anyone see the monfils match to know what the dispute was? I saw a glimpse of it but had it on mute incase I heard the score of something else, whilst I was fast forwarding to find anither match lol.
Caro - in my post on the djoko thread are my thoughts on his match. I'd put him at 75 the first set and most of the second. Bit wobbly after that, 6 match points to get to the win, a howler game. I think monfils will be tough. .

This is already such an interesting tournament- the Margaret Court controversy, Sharapova draw ceremony debacle, now the apparent player dispute ( which makes me feel old as I recall the origins of the ATP after the players held a meeting in the US open car park in 1988 to form a union)..
Oh wait, there's tennis too! I must say all the side stories make it slightly easier to bear Andys absence. Much to discuss.
Curious- why did my post need editing

What happened with Dimi. First slam after his WTF win, so maybe feeling the pressure? Or was McDonald playing out of his skin?
Oh my! Grigor got out of jail there. Young McDonald (with the very impressive name of Michael Mackenzie Lowe McDonald) played so well and as Dimi said, it was a matter of a few points here and there and in the end it was perhaps experience which got him through. I'm glad Dimi still in though. The tournament would be the poorer without him.

Nick is acting very strange. Very restrained. Very professional. he seems very in control of himself, as if he wants to show people that he can behave and play well. He's still good to watch though, and he can make the ball talk at times. Next match v JWT should be good to watch, neither player hold back.

Absolutely! When I was watching Denis last night I was struck at what different games these two men have. Denis has a much better all-round game AND he has great speed. Milos is just not a good defender/returner nor does he have the speed but he has a killer serve and forehand. I'd prefer Denis' game in the end. I do hope Milos can rebound and get some decent fitness training.
Shocker from Goffin losing to Benneteau(36) 6-1 6-7(5) 1-6 6-7(4). Benneteau served for the match at 5-4 in the 4th set and had 2 MPs and after Goffin saved the second MP he won the next 10 points and I was convinced Goff was going to win but it went to a TB in which he was 4-2 up but then seemed to come to a standstill and lost the next 5 points with Benneteau not having to do much.
Oh dear - another shock defeat. So sorry to see Goff go out - I had high hopes for him and I had hoped for better from Monfils.

Sandgren had an operation to repair a torn labrum in his hip in 2014 and was out for 6 months. He's another American player who is charm personified but then you look at their social media and are disappointed. Cameron Norrie beat Sandgren in 3 consecutive challengers in September/October last year.

Aw, thanks Pat :) Yes, I'm desperately disappointed for him. I know he finally got the better of Fed and Rafa at the O2, but, realistically if Goffin is going to get a slam it will be when the field is depleted. I so, so wanted him to take advantage here. I've loved his game ever since I saw him at Wimbledon 2012, when he was 20 but looked about 12. Talking to him over DC final weekend just cemented in my mind how lovely he is. Oh well, maybe the French (but obvs not Wimbledon, as Andy will be back!:))
I too was really disappointed when I saw Daveed's result this morning. I agree about the heat maybe being a factor but I also wonder if he is suffering from his exertions at the end of last year as Andy did after '16.

Well there is grunting and then there is outright screaming and shrieking? Surely the latter can't be included under the 'grunting' umbrella?
Grunting I can cope with but the SCREAMING (Yes, Shazza and Mugu I refer to you!) is horrific and so offputting. I can't bear watching a lot of WTA tennis anymore. And some of the men are ticking me off too.
I was expecting goffin to go through so it was a horrible mix of shock and disappointment. Like you Rosie, I thought a depleted field would be his best chance. Fingers crossed for the French though. He fought hard but I wondered if the heat played a part in the end.
It really surprised me the way people talked of stan's loss. As if it was some major upset, but I felt from his pressers etc before the tournie that he saw it as every win would be a bonus and he was just seeing where he was at. So I didn't expect him to win, it seemed like a matter of time. The heat couldn't have helped.
Theim and zverev have surprised me as neither is played as well as I expected. They are both getting through but I guess the matches this round were less straight forward than I expected. Could just be the heat again. It's hard to tell. I don't think zverev has a big test in the next round but theiims could be. It would be easier to judge where he is anyway.
The djoko match was a let down. For obvious reasons but the delpo khachy match didn't disappoint. I'd been looking forward to it when the draw came out. Khachy is another great new guy to watch, much like shappy. I thoroughly enjoyed that one at least. Though delpo looked wiped in the end. He will pay Berdy in the next round, though he dropped a set his match seemed like less work. He seemed to have more energy when it was over. It's a tough one to call and though I like delpo more I wouldn't mind too much I'd Berdy won. He is playing well. He has a tough draw ahead but no one said winning a slam was easy. Or even reaching the final of one. I hope I'm wrong but I think Berdy will get the win over delpo.
Well done Nick! Great match to watch. Shame for Jo who probably hasn't played so consistently well for quite a while.
Kyrgios and Tsonga...in Jim Courier's words, that was a 'fun match'. Better than that, it was a great match, a real crowd pleaser.I am so pleased Nick won, though I do have a wee space in my heart to feel sorry for Jo-Willy. He's a great guy and played a fantastic match. So good to see Nick focussed and playing 'big boys tennis'. I bet Andy will be pleased for him too. Becoming interesting now. Dimi up next for him. Absolutely agree on both counts. I have alsways liked Stan too and Goff but I wasn't a really big Goff fan until the O2 last year when he beat Fed. I was there screaming my head off for him with the Fed fan club just to my left giving me the "if looks could kill" stare! Absolutely loved that match and was so delighted for Goff. I really didn't mind who won the Jo v Nick battle but I'm sorry it didn't go to a fifth - I think both Jo and the match deserved a fifth set. Jo seemed to be having a problem with his knee in the tie-break though so maybe he wouldn't have done justice to a fifth. I really don't know who I want to win the Grigor v Nick match. This happens on tour a lot as well. Can't see how it benefits anyone. Can't possibly be healthy for players or the folk working the court. I mean there are ball kids!!!! Also keeps everyone who works behind scenes in the event to a ridiculous hour - how are they getting home/ back to hotels- then needing to come back next day. Can't imagine it's what tv wants- I doubt ratings are great - and unfair on fans. A lot will need to leave due to transport issues and/ or needing to be at work next day. Which is again unfair on players to have a dwindling crowd. Remember Andy playing well into wee small hours in Madrid. Thinks the court officials outnumbered the crowd and the umpire was singing along to help stay awake.

I absolutely agree - I have deliberately avoided Rafa, Fed and Djoko too and have enjoyed the tournament so much more because of it. I expect I shall have to watch one, two or all of them eventually but it's been nice not to have to do it in the early stages.
The rapport at the net between Dimi and Nick was great to see. Did Nick say to Dimi something like, 'Believe in yourself - you can do it.'? I don't know but that's what it looked like to me. They both seem to be genuinely nice guys who have real respect for one another - well done to both of them.

Dimi is just more mature and experienced and DISCIPLINED than Nick BUT Nick is defo improving. Once he matures he will be laser-focused and annihilate his opponents one by one.

Dom and Sandgren locked in a really good battle. Sandgren takes the 3rd on TB to go 2.1 up. Deserves it, playing great and coming forward at every opportunity, but hope Dom can get the win.

Though Dom played a pretty average tiebreak. Now 5-5 in the fourth. Tense.

If Djoko loses this set I would put any money on him retiring.

Sandgren holds to love 5-2, looking like either Sandgren or Chung will be a semi finalist

Sandgren through 6-3, Dom never really played like a top ten player, just a few flashes but didn't do enough

Chung 6-5, Novak needs a hold and a tiebreak win, otherwise at 2 sets down, he is as good as out
