View Full Version : Alexander "Sascha" Zverev
After watching sascha In person for the first time on Sunday, he is even better than he seems on the tv when playing his best. At a career high of 3, first time at the O2 and only 20, as much as I wanted him to do well and knew he was capable I didn't want to expect it. Many players I like jo willie being one, struggle to find their best in the wtf.
I really enjoyed the match against cilic, sascha was a deserving winner. He is even better today. Though due to a techinal malfunction I missed everything form 3-0 in the breaker to 5-5 in the second set. Go sascha.
Poor sascha - that last set was so bad. It was hard to watch. A mix of low belief, snatching at things and running out of steam. It was so sad. I really feel for him as he will kick himself for losing that first set. I hope that beats sock and qualifies for the semis :)

Me too! If after the 2nd set. Couldn't believe Sascha lost it so easily
Sascha admits he lost concentration during the match but takes positives from it and says he still have a chance to qualify. I'm glad this match didn't defeat that hope in him. http://www.nittoatpfinals.com/en/news-and-media/tennis/federer-zverev-nitto-atp-finals-2017-tuesday-naf

All this talk about Sascha not getting past the 4th round at a major - quick look at his potential 4th round opponent this time - Djokovic. Now yes he is a former champion but he isn't 100% plus he is trying out a new serve sasch has to like his chances. The potential third round against his brother may be more difficult. Mischa is a great player but also it must be tough facing your brother. Serena's method when facing Venus is not to look at her. He could try that. All that said, even if he doesn't get past the fourth round here and don't think it's a bad omen for his future. He's a young guy, with growing to do (tennis-wise) and needs to add to his mental strength. There will be more wins and I'm sure majors, in his future.
Sascha says that if he does face mischa it will be a happy moment for the family https://ausopen.com/articles/news/zverev-hunting-deep-run-melbourne

There's been another rumour about Lendl coaching Sacha which was put to Andy at the Washington event. However may not necessarily be credible if you go by this this fairly recent article https://www.tennisworldusa.org/tennis/news/Tennis_Stories/58131/alexander-zverev-trains-with-ivan-lendl-who-won-t-become-his-coach/
I wouldn’t be bothered about Lendl now. I will remain forever grateful for him for getting AM over that hurdle to his first GS title, but I don’t think he is the right coach for AM now.

Many said that after Andy's back surgery, but we all know what followed: Ivandy 2 and more glory in the shape of no 1 ranking and second gold. Really hope they make it a trilogy with aim of career slam in the third installment - these two are tennis soul mates!

Good luck to them. Realistically Lendl was always going to coach someone else at some point. Still feels strange mind you.

Yes I thought I saw Lendl with Sascha when the latter was practising in NY yesterday. Was on Instagram.

Unsurprising. Although nowhere near as talented, Sascha is in the same situation as Andy was - masters titles but can't break through at slams. Lendl looking to be the missing piece of the puzzle again. Disappointing, but it was always going to be a good while until Andy was physically ready for Lendl again, and sadly Ivan got snapped up. Just wish it was by a player I liked more - (can't make my mind up on young Sascha).
I think Sascha's main problem is his temperament, and Lendl could possibly help him with that.

Time will tell but I hope the relationship works well

I'm the same RB - can't really decide about Sasha. I want to like him but there's something I can't put my finger on that's not got me bought in yet!

Maybe not directly related but little sign of Lendl having great impact thus far. However I know that Sacha has had some health issues this season so that is maybe more of a factor

What has happened to Sascha?
Tennis Now:- Zverev to Lendl.."Focus on your job...... http://www.tennisnow.com/Blogs/NET-POSTS/July-2019/Zverev-to-Lendl-Focus-on-Your-Job.aspx
Well that’s going to go down like a lead balloon with Lendl. Any predictions on how long it will be before Lendl tells him to stuff it?

Good, good, this on top of Sascha's R1 defeat at Wimbledon is welcome news to me. Sorry, not sorry - Lendl belongs with Andy, and if they reunite soonish there is time to have a genuine shot at that elusive Aus Open title. It's not about the physical/technical training, which Andy is more than capable of directing himself, it's that Ivan knows exactly how to make Andy believe in himself.
......it's nothing personal against young Sascha (although think he's been overhyped and imo Stefanos and FAA are the megastars in waiting), it's just that Andy's wants and needs come first!
Very true RB, especially about Stefanos & FAA, but what has annoyed me is Sascha talking to the media about his coach, can't see Lendl liking it either, in my mind what is said between coach & player stays between coach & player.

Not surprising.. Ivan lendl ends coaching Zverev "I have a lot of belief in Sascha who is still very young. I think that one day he may become a great player but currently he has some off court issues that make it difficult to work in a way that is consistent with my philosophy."
Now I wonder where Lendl might go next.

Wonderful, wonderful news!!!! A coaching relationship, is just like any other relationship, can't force or fake it. Andy and Ivan share a chemistry that neither are going to find elsewhere. Now bring on Ivandy 3:Unfinished Business. :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

Latest on Sascha Zverev is that it's looking like he'll be out for 6-8 weeks. No Wimbledon but hopes to come back ahead of the US Open. Not great, but could have been a heck of a lot worse.
RosieBear

Sascha has had surgery and updated reports suggest that 6-8 weeks is overly optimistic and it's looking more like 4-6 months and that he will miss the hardcourt season as well as Wimbledon because it would be very hard on the ankle.

That is a pity but would obviously the recovery will take some time and will be for the best longer term.
