Absolutely thrilled coco is out. She was up to her usual stunts. Got a violation for refusing to play until someone provided bananas (that's not an embellishment), she flipped and said she wouldn't as the court wasn't properly prepared. I guess it's the bananas fault she lost. I rolled my eyes out of my head with that one. She was also shouting a searing at her opponent for a change. Yes, I'm still rolling my eyes!

Disappointed for Sloane tho'.

Kvitova sadly now also out to Petkovic (though like her too), was 10-8 in 3rd though.

Caro
16-01-2018, 13:51
Oh no! Sad Petra is out. I had picked her to go fairly deep I'm in the "Can't stand CoCo" camp so am glad she's out, although I also picked her to quarters I think (can't quite remember). No sure what has happened to Sloane, she just looks completely disinterested and like she just wants to be somewhere else. I'm hoping this might finally be Wozniacki's year.

I literally could not believe she came back from, what was it?, 2-5 to win!!! Just like Tsonga with Denis.

I watched the Gavrilova/Mertens match. Set 1 looked like a complete walkover for Gav, even the commies thought there was no way she was going to lose the first set, but Mertens somehow clawed her way back, won the set and the match. I'm sure Gav can still hardly believe what happened.

Oh dear - what happened to Jo?

RoastLamb

Sad for Jo and Mugu.

Genie is also, like Milos, a ghost of her former self. Sad to see this. Cdn tennis is going down the toilet.

JerryD
18-01-2018, 18:51
Shappy was fantastic though, even though he went out. I'm sure milos will be back once he dusts off the rust. I didn't see Jo's match in its entirety but after what I did see I wasn't surprised with the result. There will be more tournies though. Onwards and upwards

Who on earth is Jack Davis - the world no 1600 - who is playing Simona Halep tonight?

Hawkeye
19-01-2018, 20:07
It's world #50 Lauren Davis Halep is playing, which site has got it so horribly wrong?

Alis
19-01-2018, 21:11
Thanks, Hawkeye. I thought it must be Lauren Davis but, according to Livescorehunter, it is one Jack Davis - world no 1600 - that she is playing! !!:rolling:

Alis

Some battle with Halep and Davis with Simona taking it 15-13 in the 3rd,watched it to is conclusion! Was not up for the start of the night session but looks like it was a bit of a rout from Kerber, thought she would win but expected more of a test from Sharapova.

I have just watched the Aga/Hsieh match. (Good way to pass a snowy cold morning!) Watching Aga fight back in the second set was intriguing. There were some amazing rallies and I really hoped she could at least force a TB but not to be. I am not that au fait with Hsieh's game, though I should be as she is 32 years old, but today she was very accurate and aggressive, double-handed on both wings. She certainly ran Aga round the court and stayed strong until the end. Lovely interview afterwards.
I watched most of the epic final set between Halep and Davis. Such guts and determination from both of them. Both obviously struggling with and playing through pain...Davis's toenail came off () and a MTO was required for that.
Go Angie kerber! Good on you!:skippy:

I'm sure it was Hseih who gave Jo Konta the run around at the French last year. A very canny player, Jo is one thing, but not many out-wit Aga. Fair play to her but still sad for Aga. Watching the titanic struggle between Halep and Davis now - wow, complete respect to both, neither deserved to lose. Just hope it hasn't taken too much out of Simona as I'd love to see her go all the way.

JAMES4578
21-01-2018, 01:23
Hseih certainly tricky but disappointed for Aga (though not many great results lately). Certainly some drama in the Halep/Davis match,Lauren was close a few times but pity about the toetail. Simona was strong on this ocassion, though the match may take a toll.

Josephine
22-01-2018, 16:30
Watched some of this in middle of night when I couldn't sleep.

Hseih playing style was incredible - very flat double handed hitting on both sides and just swiping the ball corner to corner with Angie run to exhaustion, then finishing the point with an unbelievable short angle or drop shot. Angie only just too strong in 2nd set. Then I went to bed as winner was clear.

Alis
22-01-2018, 17:53
I've just watched the re-run of the Kerber/Hseih match - so entertaining. Hseih is so unconventional that she's great fun to watch. It was a pity that she ran out of steam in the third set but hats off to Angie for sticking with it. Surely Hseih will be encouraged to play more singles after the success she's had this last week.

I've just watched the replay of that amazing 3rd set between Halep and Kerber. They both gave it so much and both deserved to win. However seed #1 and seed #2 have now reached their appointed place: the final. So I am hopeful it will be a good one. Today's match would have been worthy of a final. On a more trivial note, I believe Halep is without a clothing sponsor at the moment. Her red outfit apparently bought online from a Chinese website. As she is currently world #1, to me that seems a little strange that she has no clothing sponsor? I wonder why?

Certainly great final with some drama (just finished watching recording without knowing the result), well done Caroline for coming through in the end and taking first slam (which many doubted not so long ago) ,whilst pity for Simona who came close and was gutsy at times of adversity. Whilst Caroline also had fitness issue towards the climax guess she had a bit more left and whilst I thought she was backing off too much at times the balance did work and defence was key in closing stages. Hopefully Halep gets another chance.

Congratulations to Wozniaki. She deserved to win and it's good she has finally won her slam.

I was also supporting Halep as have seen her lose 2 tough GS finals and watched quite a bit of her matches in Oz this year - somehow coming through really long and difficult matches. I have a soft spot for her as she also comes over as a really nice level headed person. She just didn't have the energy left in such sapping heat after so many long matches.

It was a bit of a mix of a match - bit error strewn mixed with amazing points but exciting as winner was unpredictable until the end.

Seemingly, Simona Halep was in hospital for four hours last night while they rehydrated her. Maybe that's why they decided to close the roof?

They closed the roof today because the temperature/humidity readings were higher today than yesterday and reached the measurement required for them to close the roof.

According to the commentators on Eurosport, the 'wet bulb' reading reached the required level but the temperature did not - it was required to reach 40 degrees and at no time during the day did it reach 40 degrees. It seems that some are more equal than others.
