I had wondered why Jos Rae didn't feature in the team, I hadn't noticed she has retired through injury at just 26.

I did hear previously, frustrating to have exit at early age (certainly for doubles) but probably best decision for Jos.

Portugal by far the easier of the group matches, if Kontaveit plays then Estonia will be a much sterner test.

Portugal by far the easier of the group matches, if Kontaveit plays then Estonia will be a much sterner test.

Whilst Kontaveit (27) will provide a sterner test, the rest of the Estonian team won't as they don't even have rankings. And nor should any potential opponent in the play off (Sweden, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary) none of whom are represented by a top 100 player.

This ought to be a very straightforward process this week......

So hope we end the group Top and win the "final" then we can have another go at getting out the flaming thing! - Has anyone worked out the potential opponents yet SHOULD we make it that far <anti jinx emoction> and if they would be home or away (Romania would be home if they are in the WG II Playoff)

The 8 teams in World Group II playing this week are Russia (1) v Slovakia (C), Ukraine (3) v Australia (C), Canada v Romania (4C) and Spain v Italy (2C). So I guess the 4 losers of those ties are the potential opponents. No idea on home or away.

Given that Italy and Romania are both seeded and at home, I'd expect them to win.

@russellcfuller (https://twitter.com/russellcfuller) 2h2 hours ago (https://twitter.com/russellcfuller/status/962417320219041792)More

Looks like the draw is on Tuesday at 10am - GB could still be seeded but more likely not to be and to have to face one of the losing sides from this weekend’s World Group 2 ties.

glenys
11-02-2018, 08:06
Only one definite home tie would be Romania if they lose - all others would be drawn by lot, so chances of a home tie are still out there - hoping for a home time or a really easy to get to European tie

suttontennis
12-02-2018, 13:11
Seedings announced https://www.fedcup.com/en/news/281464.aspx

Each of the seeds will be drawn against one of the following unseeded nations:Canada, Japan, Latvia, Paraguay.
going on past history, we haven't played Paraguay, last played Japan away, have only played Latvia on neutral ground, last played Japan away, and last played Canada at home (except for neutral ground), so Paraguay and Latvia would be drawn by lots, Japan would be home, and Canada away. Or I've probably got this completely wrong.!!

sir coolerking
12-02-2018, 15:54
So rough strength of the top two in each Nation:

Canada - Bouchard 116, Abanda 123
Japan - Osaka 50, Hibino 91, Nara 103
Latvia - Ostapenko 6, Sevastova 15
Paraguay - Cepede Royg 84, Gonzales 367

So ideally anyone but Latvia, although that would be dependent on their top 2 being fit.

glenys
12-02-2018, 18:56
I need to double check but according to this Wiki link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Britain_Fed_Cup_team#1963%E2%80%931969

The last time we played Canada was in 1984 and that was in Brazil as it was in the knockout stages. Prior to that we go back to 1963 and 1966 pre open era

Incidentally, never played Canada in WG II (or WG etc) always in the "knockout" stage. - my head hurts and I'm still unsure LOL

glenys
12-02-2018, 18:59
From @gbtennis on twitter (cos i asked)

Yes, with FedCup, only World Group I/II/PO venues since 1995 are taken into account (cf 1970 for DC) so by lot v all nations unless we’ve met them away in playoffs since 2012

I've thought that for a long time. If she could find herself a regular partner, I think she could do really well on the doubles circuit. I know the money isn't as good but losing first round in the singles on a weekly basis can't be very lucrative either.

Such a pity and must be so gutting for Jo/Heather and of course the team lead by Anne , was looking promising earlier on in the doubles but the Japanese the stronger pair in the end. Just wonder the difference had Heather taken those sets points against Nara after Johanna's impressive over Osaka.

Pretty disappointing and once again Watson chokes from a good position in the singles. You have to wonder why we took a doubles specialist if we weren't going to use her. Given the form Watson was in, it seemed odd to play her again.

i agree that with hindsight Anne could have picked Smith instead of Heather. But H is the more experienced doubles player ahead of Jo so Anne was probably Jo's power a singles player and Heather's doubles experience would see them through. It almost did. As a aside, I would make it a rule that the doubles rubber has to be played by the nominated doubles pairing. But it would be impossible to manage properly, teams would just say that one of the doubles players was 'injured' so they had to get one off the singles players to play instead.

I heard about it on radio five live. The sports presenter claimed we'd finally been given a home tie at Bath University after 25 years. One of my cousins is at Bath University, so I would be interested in going. Will Sally organise the tickets for us or would we have to do it individually? Maybe, we could have our Saturday meal somewhere in Bath.

Not sure about the line calls the Greeks were complaining about, but there was a very bad call from the umpire in the second set which went against Katie. Ump called the Greek's ball in, it was definitely out, we saw it on the slo-mo, and instead of Katie having 2 break points, score was 30 all. Exciting tense match!

Same as in DC (or at least the format they've now dumped) - depends if the teams have played before. Drawing of lots if they've never played or a home tie for the team that was away the previous time

Edit: The tie is Easter weekend 20-21 April

Am I right in thinking the play off team possibilities are Russia, Brazil and Kazhakstan?

I'm trying to understand it too - looking at the Fed Cup webpages. Russia have qualified like GB have from the Group but won't the other teams in the World Group II Play-Offs be the losers of the World Group II ties being played this weekend? That's how I think it works but it's about as clear as mud

Status of those ties are

Switzerland lead Italy 2-0
Latvia lead Slovakia 2-0
Spain and Japan are 1-1
Canada lead The Netherlands 2-0

The result of those ties will be known tomorrow but it's looking like Italy, Slovakia, Netherlands could be opponents, with Spain or Japan still in the mix too.

Have I got this right do you think?
