I did suddenly notice the year in the heading, today.

Jessica Peris of Australia, the daughter of Nova Peris, has failed a drugs test. Jessica had hoped to get into the Aussie team for the Commonwealth Games.

Dai Greene, the former 400m hurdler, has completed his first race since June 2016 in 50.08s which is 0.58s slower than the qualification time. He's already been included in the Welsh Commonwealth Games team, but needs to run faster before the 4th of next month.

Helicopters could be used for the athletes to get them to their venues, if the roads on the Gold Coast become grid locked with traffic.

I wouldn't call it a city. More of an urban sprawl with a beach. There is a great theme park, though - Dreamland - which includes Tiger Island where you can pet a tiger!

If you know anyone aged between 16 and 25 years old and they live in the Birmingham area, the council would be interested in hearing from them. As they're looking for dancers, no experience needed, to appear on the TV during the closing ceremony on the 15th of next month.

Alistair Brownlee will carry England's flag and Jazz Carlin will carry the Welsh flag at the opening ceremony tomorrow.

I wonder if the flag carrying for Alistair impacted on his performance. I didn't see the triathlon and only heard the result but I wondered at the timings when I saw the length of the ceremony yesterday.

Looks like an unwise decision from Alistair, however may not have been the crucial factor. Both brothers citing injury over the past month, they were in leading pack after swimming/cycling but struggled in the run. Jonny was 7th and Alistair 10th. Scott Mark Austin took Bronze(though don't know much about him) with title won by South African Henri Schoeman. Scotland have taken cycling gold with Neil Fachie, and Matt Rotherham, well done. England's Amiee Wilmott edged out Scotland's Hannah Miley in 400m individual medley, whilst pity for Hannah well done to Amiee! England have also now taken Men's Team Gold Gymnastics with Bronze for Scotland, great stuff! Bronze for James Guy in 400m free style with Olympic champion Australian Mark Horton taking Gold.

BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/commonwealth-games/43650292) - Commonwealth Games: Scotland's Marc Austin wins bronze, Brownlee brothers miss out

Alistair, who carried the England flag during the opening ceremony, said his build-up had been hampered by a calf injury.

He said: "I would have preferred my calf to be good two months ago. If it was and I was able to train in that time, I reckon I would have been able to win that race."
Jonny said his training had been disrupted by an issue with his thigh.
"It was pretty terrible today," said Jonny. "My first thought was 'I wish I was fit'."
The Brownlees have a second chance to win a medal when they compete in the mixed team relay on Saturday, 7 April at 04:01 BST.

Congrats to Adam after another yet another Gold, well done! Perhaps not his best but can't always totally excel though he wad said to not be happy with performance. Another gold for Neil Fachie, fab! A Bronze for Scoland's Duncan Scott in 200m Butterfly for his 3rd medal, great! Welsh cyclist Elinor Barker pipped Kate Archibald to take Gold in the points Race, a great silver for Scot Jack Carlin in Men's sprint but was so close to taking New Zealand's Sam Webster to a final leg-well done all! . Gold and Silver for England in the All round Gymnastics with Nile Wilson and James Hall last night, great stuff! The Brownlee Brothers got on the podium with a silver in the Mixed relay with Jess Learmonth and Vicky Holland but too big a gap for Alistair to make up at the end with Australia taking the honours -still good result and great to see! In overnight action great Gold for aptly named Duncan Scott in 100m freestyle whilst England's Sarah Davis gets silver in Weightlifting 69kg, good news. James Guy fastest qualifier in 100m butterfly after pulling out of event yesterday, Scott Sean Campsie 2nd fastest.

A great swim from Duncan Scott today defeating the reigning Commonwealth and Olympic champions to claim gold. Well done, Duncan!!! My daughter taught him History and says he is a lovely lad - he used to bring her lunch from the dining room sometimes because he worried about her working through her lunch hour and not eating! How many teenage boys would do that? Great performances from many other athletes from the home countries too. It's so good to see them all doing so well.

Major surprise and pity for Adam, however hasn't been performing consistently in top form. South Africa's Van Der Burgh takes 50m Breaststroke title again, James Wilby 3rd. Not great for Jasmin Carlin though. Earlier James Willstrop takes the squash Gold at age of 34 and with Sarah Jane Perry also for England taking silver after losing 5 setter, well done! Gold for Alice Kinsella and Nile Wilson for England in Gymnastics, Holly Arnold has world record taking Gold in Javelin F46, fab!

The organisers of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham want to show it as a "diverse, young and a contemporary city". On Sunday morning, during the closing ceremony, there will be 400 dancers in Birmingham dancing to Mr Blue Sky by ELO. Amerah Saleh, a poet, will also be there as will Lady Sanity, a rapper. Great gold for Ben Proud in 50m freestyle and silver for Duncan Scott in 200m Individual Medley just missing out to Aussie Mitch Larkin. This is 6th medal for the Scot , well done! Bronze for Welsh swimmer Georgina Davis in 50m backstroke with Gold going to Australian Emily Seebohn. Didn’t go well for Pozzi in hurdles unfortunately and injury forces Tom Daley out of individual platform but will compete in syncro. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/commonwealth-games/43376891

Toni Minichiello seems to curse the athletes that he picks for medals. Yesterday, he claimed Pozzi would win. Pozzi came nowhere. Today, Toni claimed Robbie Grabarz would win either a gold or silver medal in the high jump. Robbie did a no height in three attempts.

JAMES4578
11-04-2018, 12:16
Commentators curse though pity for Robbie, though a few do the same here  Jack Laugher had the Gold touch in retaining 1m Springboard, great stuff! Scott James Heatley (with some heritage) performed well to take the Bronze, well done!

England's Zharnel Hughes disqualified for impeding Jareem Richards after apparently coming 1st in 200m (Trinidadian named winner) Appeal underway but has now been upheld. Northern Ireland's Leon Reid in 3rd place. Earlier Jack Laugher with another Gold in 3m and Virgin Island winner Kyron McMaster in 400M Hurdles, fab and Sophie Hahn takes 100 K38 fab!! Silvers for Scot Elidh Doyle, silver and Bronze for English athletes Kyle Langford and Dina Asher Smith. Pretty good performances from all, well done! Kenya's Wycliffe takes Gold in 800 but celebrating a bit early nearly cost him!

More great results in the diving as Tom Daley/Dan Goodfellow took the Gold in 10m Syncro (though tight in the end and a mistake from both in comp - taking silver English pair Dixon and Williams who pushed the Australians into 3rd place), Still great from both after a lack of training. Scott Grace Reid took the 1m Springboard over Aussies Sheehan and Qin. Laugher and Mears also took Gold in 3m Syncro- congrats , all-fabulous!

Katarina Johnson Thomson won the Heptathlon , well done! Not best performance and picked up injury at end , hopefully ok going forward. Bowler Alex Marshall also won Gold for Scotland in Men's Fours, well done! As expected Caster Semenya easily won the 800 for the double as did Uganda's Joshua Kiprui with 5000/10,000 double.

on the penultimate day the Home Nations won 14 out of 44 possible medals, fabulous!

Definitely heartache for Callum and distressing scenes, shocking it took so long to get help! Australia's Michael shelley took the Gold in Marathon followed by Uganda's Munyo Solomon , fellow scot Robbie Simpson done well to take the Bronze. At least Callum seems to be recovering well. Final Day (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/commonwealth-games) Some other news on final day, Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge win Badminton Doubles Gold over Indian 2nd seeds Rankireddy and Shetty, England also took netball Gold over Australia. Scotland missed out on Badminton Bronze to New Zealand.

I really feel for poor Callum Hawkins. I was watching the marathons and it was really distressing to see him weaving about, collapsing and then getting up to try to finish the race before finally collapsing.

Glad to hear he is OK and sitting up in bed. Such a brave athlete and so disappointing for him that he was not far off the finishing line and a gold medal.

I agree with Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe that he should have received medical help sooner than he was. Surely the organisers would have had people watching the event on screens and at the first sign that he was in trouble have organised medical help. I've read that he refused medical help - it was obvious that he was in no condition to make such a decision.
