We know they have a choice of available venues so hard to make a case for a delay......but this is the LTA!

No announcement today then. I suppose the "deadline" is when the LTA have to inform the ITF, rather than making a public announcement. Not even a sniff of "details to be announced soon" on the LTA website -the event is listed in their events calendar but when you click on it you're just directed to the news of the Marbella tie

Unless they just want us to think they are considering other venues :P lol

Many a true word spoken in jest, Jerry. No city has dominated DC the way Glasgow has and it's become increasingly controversial, not least because on several occasions people have missed out on tickets when bigger capacity venues were available. It's becoming harder for the LTA to justify its obsession with the Emirates. And before everyone jumps in with oh but I love Glasgow, the atmosphere etc I'd say you wouldn't feel too happy if you were one of those to miss out on ticket. DC is exciting and atmosphere can be created in any indoor venue. DC was always the people's tennis, ridiculous to then make it inaccessible. If this is the last proper year it's more important than ever that maximum number of people get a chance to attend.

Hawkeye
04-05-2018, 10:35
They allegedly keep using the Emirates because it is (very) heavily subsidised by Glasgow City Council, i.e. the LTA loves the cheap option.

Davis Cup to light up Glasgow once again
Davis Cup action is set to return to Glasgow when Great Britain take on Uzbekistan in the World Group play-offs in September. The Slice understands an announcement will come from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) in due course that the Emirates Arena will play host once again after the roaring success of the previous three ties held there in 2016 and 2015.

This is potentially the last Davis Cup tie that will be held on British soil if the International Tennis Federation’s proposals for a one-week World Cup-style event, to start in 2019, receive approval from member nations in August.

lovetennis
04-05-2018, 12:05
Yep, definitely think a sweetheart deal exists. Cheap but shortsighted option.

Pretty sure this is true, but also wondering if the LTA are thinking Glasgow is a safer bet for putting bums on seats. Uzbekistan are not exactly a big crowdpuller (sorry Uzbekistan, but its true) and it is "only" a play-off which to us DC nuts is fine but to the average punter is not a big deal. Maybe they are hoping for some local loyalty after the previous ties. Andy's involvement in the tie is a complete unknown at this point but Jamie & Cam are almost dead certs for the team so maybe the LTA are thinking the average punters are more likely to turn out in Glasgow than somewhere with no local connection to the players like Newcastle or Cardiff. They didn't fill the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham for the Japan tie - probably due to the extortionate ticket price for a 1st round tie- even though Japan were fielding a top player in Kei and Andy & local boy Dan were playing.

Or maybe the LTA are just going for the easy option. Either way I wish they would confirm it - I have now booked PI George Sq on the flexible rate. Stu Fraser is one of the more reliable tennis journalists so I'd be surprised if he's got it wrong

JerryD
04-05-2018, 12:49
I was only half joking RB. It wouldn’t surprise me if that was the motive at all. I know other venues maybe expensive but given the hole the one in Coventry is in I bet they would have been the cheapest. The council just need it to be used

For many Scots a Glasgow tie is their only chance of getting to see the Scottish players in action as factors such as travel time and costs prevents them getting to DC ties and tour events else where. So if it is Glasgow it is possible the LTA are taking into account the possibility this nay be last chance fir many Scots to see their heroes in action. ( and guarantees filling the arena)

Obviously I'll be delighted if it is as I can definitely go on the Saturday and Sunday but I do understand the feelings of those fir whom Glasgow isn't accessible and sympathise. No matter where it is, someone will be disappointed.

The only problem we had when the match was on the same day at the Tennis was you had to find somewhere else to park. Some people said you could just park at the tesco, though there were signs everywhere saying you’d be fined. This time we booked our hotel early enough so we are near enough to the venue and not out in Coatbridge so we won’t be using the car after we get to Glasgow. Other than for the trip home. Glasgow is certainly easier for us than Cardiff or down south: But luckily Kev is prepared to drive or split the drive. Not everyone has that option.

We didnt ever run into any problems in the union jag stuff. When we played OZ there was a guy in front of us going mad about union jacks being sold there. Though he did buy one. Then as we got closer to the venue someone was selling Scottish flags and he asked to swap his jacks. The guy said no as he wasn’t selling jacks so the guy had another rant before buying the Scottish ones anyway. Then as we approached the bins he snapped the sticks on the jacks and shoved them in the bin. All whilst still ranting. No one felt unsafe though, we just assumed he was in a mood. Right too, because as we got to the venue he was then complaining at the speed the line was moving.

Caro

Happy with Glasgow. I’ve always enjoyed visiting and never had any problems. The venue is a bit of a pain to get back from and as RB says, the size has been an issue for world group ties when a bigger venue would have meant more people could go, but that’s not a problem this time with it being a play off.

Wherever it is, it is not going to suit everyone, although for me anywhere is ok because I can get time off work whereas teachers or school staff in general can’t. That goes for wherever you live so the closer to home the better for you guys.

I think in general people just get annoyed when one city gets so many ties. I remember in the early 2000’s when Birmingham had loads of ties. Anyone saying they’re not going to go on principle if it’s Glasgow is cutting off their nose to spite their face IMO. I would not miss this tie for the world!! For the casual DC / tennis fan, people will only go if it’s close to home but that’s not us is it? So let’s just all stop moaning and go enjoy ourselves eh? :big grin: (sorry for those who actually really can’t go).

Thanks Caro - we weegies love having u all come to our city. DC aside it's actually great hosting the ties here to help promote tennis in a football mad part of Scotland ( I'm talking the west of Scotland as a whole, not the fact that the stadium is next door to a football club). Holding onto juniors who are also footballers is often a problem in clubs so every bit of positive exposure really helps grow the game and get people hooked.

My first DC tie was at Braehead and I fell in love with Glasgow then. I love the Davis Cup and I always have to travel. If people are not supporting the team because it's in Glasgow again then they are not supporters. Tennis fans who live in the south have access to so many tournaments so why moan because it's in Scotland again. I'm not a big fan of the Emirates but at least there are clean inside toilets! Getting back to the city is a real pain but that won't put me off. Seeing live tennis, supporting the boys and being with friends is what makes it special for me.

I would not have a problem if the tie is going to be Glasgow, l have been there a few times and really like it, it's just bad timing on my part, l will be driving from Essex going for a weeks holiday to Durham which starts on Friday 14 Sept, so for selfish reasons was hoping it would be Birmingham then l would have stopped there for a few days before travelling on (missing a few days of my holiday, but watching DC would have been worth it).

I don't mind Glasgow. I usually book the Travelodge in Braehead, as it's easy for me when I come off the M8. Also, for Emirates Arena, I park at the Forge shopping centre which is about a ten or so minute walk to the stadium. The car park is opposite some headstones, but it's free and has all day parking. I think the car park, opposite the stadium, is only for three or four hours free parking but I could be wrong.

Delighted its Glasgow again but TBH was planning to go wherever it was held in UK - this might be our last world group tie in the old format if the DC changes go through.

Re parking - there's an industrial estate just opposite the Emirates and I parked there every day last time with no problems. I made sure to get there pretty early as I thought everyone would have the same idea but it was fine, even on the Friday when most of the businesses on there were open.

I don't recall it being any sort of issue. The DC team were invited to Celtic park during the week and the club noticeboards displayed good luck messages. The fans were happy to distinguish between tennis and footie fans and didn't mind our get up!

Exactly right, Westie. Bit surprised by some of the comments. Never felt anything but welcome and that includes being in my union jack catsuit in the middle of Celtic car park. Another time we were walking the wrong way to the arena  and some locals pulled over to tell us and gave us a lift. How nice is that. For several reasons I don't think DC should be confined to any one city, but non of those reasons is anything to do with bad Glasgow experience. I'd have liked a change of scene but decided to get it by doing a road trip and stopping at Lake District, Peak Distict or Yorkshire Dales, so all good.

But it's not that simple though, Mo. I have a good friend in Bristol who would love to take her 8yr old daughter to DC - Cardiff would be manageable whereas Glasgow is not doable. Just because they are in the south they don't swan along to tournaments in London and even if they could go they are not the same, especially when it comes to taking children along. I feel every child should get a chance to see Andy in the unique DC atmosphere. And surely we want children from all over the UK to get hooked on exciting tennis, build on Andy's legacy and become the next generation of players. But at the end of the day venue choice is an LTA decision and seeing as, in a similar vein, they built one huge £40m tennis centre rather than 40 regional ones, helping people access tennis clearly isn't a genuine priority for them.

You can take the train to Balloch direct from Glasgow ( queen St except Sundays) and walk to the loch on the path that is reached just over the bridge from th station or at the Loch Lomond shores gateway centre. Both very near the station. It's all walking distance from my home.

Should have added that on Sundays the train to Balloch is from Glasgow Central. Just in case anyone wants to head that way after tennis. Trains are half hourly every day, whether it be Queen st or Central. And same back.

You can do a boat cruise of the Loch from Balloch- they have ones of different lengths. Sweeneys Cruises- right opposite the train station. There's also a tourist info there as well.

But the LTA are meant to promote DC and grow tennis across the UK - it's "only" Uzbekistan, it's "only" a play off, need for a local connection etc are surely the very last sentiments they should be projecting, but true to fashion.....

I went to Loch Lomond last year. We stayed in Balloch (got the train there from Edinburgh) and took a bus to Luss for the day. So it is doable by public transport. We also took a bus from Balloch to Balmaha and a boat over to Inchcailloch, which I highly recommend.

I do understand, sympathise and agree that it would be much better if venues were chosen in more UK cities .Glasgow has had the lion's share of the Davis Cup and probably because it has a Scottish team captain and the Murray brothers. My post really was in answer to the people who are saying they won't go if it's Glasgow. Obviously not everyone can make the tie for various reasons but if we are supporters and if we are able we support the team wherever the tie is played.

Didn't make the Naples tie, but remember seeing the gorgeous setting by the sea on TV. Imagination and the LTA don't go together do they? I'm always surprised they thought outside of the box if we had staged a home final in 2015 in the Millennium Stadium with the roof closed. Oh wait, they pinched that idea from the French didn't they. Edinburgh Castle would have been fantastic. Could even have left the stands in place from the Tattoo in August. I expect that once the roof is finished on no.1 court at Wimbledon we might get more ties there.

The nearest train station to the Emirates is Dalmarnock. There's a regular service between there and the city centre in the evenings apart from Sunday when the last train from Dalmarnock leaves just after 6pm (unless they put on extra trains, which I doubt they will). Used the trains for the Argentina tie and it was easy so long as you don't mind a 10 minute walk from Dalmarnock to the arena

I've found the same - I catch the train at Preston and I can book an Advance ticket to Glasgow with TransPenine Express, but only off-peak ticket with Virgin. Much prefer the Virgin trains and the journey time is shorter with them. Sometimes it's a 12 week window and sometimes a 24 week - have never been able to work out why. I know there is a new rail timetable being published later this month so not sure if that may be why - as Advance tickets can only be used on a specified train maybe they hold off until the timetable is confirmed - but then again TransPenine are selling their Advance tickets now so maybe that's not it

Personally I wouldn't try fit it all in b4 the Saturday tie unless you don't mind being up b4 5am...it's too nice a place and too much to see to rush. There's the lovely wee high st shops, museum, lovely river walk, postbox, Andy's first tennis courts, and cathedral all to see. Not to mention a lovely bar restaurant overlooking the river! apologies for the delay and I can see in the meantime that others have givem good advice. I didn't have the luxury of a day and wasn't going to have that in the foreseeable future therefore I took the train around 8am and met some tennis fans (who were locals who had kindly offered to take me around) at the station. So I then had the luxury of their car plus their local knowledge. I managed to see the museum, the cathedral, the high street, postbox, seat. We had a stroll on the golf course and they even took me out to the Cromlix - although it was shut as Andy and his family etc were staying there. It was Di Magio's in the Royal Exchange Square. I remember asking someone for directions at Buchanan Galleries and he told me to carry on down the same route and to turn left at the Tardis, which sounded strange at the time.

I know pizza express in Newcastle let me sort make the booking for last September’s Forum meal over the phone and took the deposit from my card. Then I sent them the orders by email. There was a menu change so we had to update that by email. But any other issues were sorted on the night. Handy because I live nearly four hours from Newcastle and had never been before so didn’t even know the area lol. So maybe Glasgow Pizza express will do it by phone and mail too. I’m not sure if it’s a company policy or not.

They didn’t have a set menu option in Newcastle. Which made it a bit more difficult organising but did give a little more choice.

DiMaggio's gets my vote - 6 starters and 14 mains to choose from (OK, only 3 desserts) which makes it much easier for the organiser and the restaurant! They were very helpful last time round IIRC and the food was pretty good for a set menu. I think they were helpful with special dietary needs too.

Funnily enough we suffered with menu changes in September. I placed the orders in July and then a few weeks before the pizza express got in touch to say that a number of items were on the summer menu and the menu would be the autumn menu when we came in. I had to change more than 10 meals lol.

The only problem I had with DiMaggio was that I ordered the chicken pasta without bacon. When it arrived I asked if it was without bacon (I don’t eat red meat of fish or pork - only chicken) they said yes it was bacon free. Took a bite. It had bacon. So I sent it back they said they were so and the next one would be bacon free. Again it wasn’t. By the third one most people had finished their main meal lol. Next time I’ll just have something else :) :)

It doesn't even need to be someone in the Glasgow area that does it..if you are all happy with di maggios then it's just a case of someone whose willing to gather numbers phone the place and book It!! They will want a deposit though...I found it easier just to pay it myself then take it back on the night altho if folks not wanting to do that they could get others to pay them up front. So come on folks whose volunteering???

Really looking forward to seeing some of you again in Glasgow (assuming Sally got my ticket request pm a few weeks ago, but it seemed to go through ok), Caledonian Sleeper booked both ways along with a hotel - PI George Square. I've heard transport from the arena back to the centre can be awful but that looks walkable, only about couple of miles, if necessary.

It'll be my first time at the Emirates (though I've been to ties in Braehead) and, realistically, it could be my last live tie unless we ever play the Americans in Richmond (as if ... it did hold one tie in the late 1960s but only because Arthur Ashe, a native of the city, was playing), Washington, New York, Baltimore or Philadelphia, so I intend to make the most of it!

Sounds like maybe they have engineering works scheduled on the Sunday, possibly? I booked to go on Thurs and return on Monday so must have avoided the problem. At least with flying we save a night's accommodation but I would much prefer to travel by train on a cheap ticket on the Thursday and pay the extra for hotel ...

I think the team will be Kyle, Cam, Jamie and Dom, with possibly Dan or Jay as reserve singles player. As there is nothing at stake there is no need to push for Andy to be there just in case, although I'll guess that he will be there anyway. As long as Andy fine it would be be good to play the doubles, however I don't particularly want him to play the singles (this time still best of 5) so soon after Us Open (whilst unlikely to go far) when there is little at stake even if the temptation.

From the little bit Andy said on the Instagram Q&A I do think he's changed his stance to a few weeks ago when in another livestream he said he wouldn't be playing the tie. The difference presumably being the latest livestream came after the DC changes were confirmed and he particularly referred to it maybe being his last chance to play in Scotland. I guess how involved he wants to be will depend on how USO goes, but whilst I would love him to do well there, if we're being realistic it's unlikely he'll be playing the latter stages of USO at this stage of his comeback. A little break and then DC as an intro to the indoor hard court season might actually suit him, but it would surely be unwise to do what he's done in the past and play both singles and doubles. I guess he will see how he is and discuss with Leon
