View Full Version : Jamie's career
it seems to me that Jamie's career is flatlining at the moment.
he is at a career high, but has just lost in the first round of two tournaments.
he doesn't have a regular partner, and the high number of dfs he is putting in may deter potential partners.
every now and again Jamie plays with kidbro Andy, and that has racked up points and spending money.
but I can't see a career plan here, so I am putting up a thread for us to discuss the way forward for Jamie.
I agree, Harriet, it doesn't appear that Jamie is following a particular career plan at the moment. I'm sure a regular partner would make a difference - I had hoped that he would team up regularly with Andre Sa as they seemed to work well together but that doesn't seem to be on the cards. It's such a shame that Jamie split with Eric when they were doing so well - but that's history now. He can't rely on Andy being available to play and boost his ranking every season though.

It is a shame after getting his ranking up that recent results have been disappointing. I too had hoped for a regular partnership with Andre Sa. Am presuming that he will play with Andy in the Olympics but he obviously needs to establish a partnership and stick to it. Do hope that he is putting some serious thought into his career prospects. Would hate to see him go down again.
the olympics is odd, the dubs team has to be Andy +another brit doesn't it.
at one point Fleming could have teamed up with either Skupski or Huchings but I'm not sure if that would be acceptable under Olympic rules.
mixed of course is a nonsense, apart from Hopman Cup when does that ever figure as an event for a national team?

I don't think mixed events are nonsense. I really enjoy watching mixed dubs. But I agree with you about Jamie's career. It seems a bit lackadaisical, come what may.
Can someone remind me of the rules regarding which players can be chosen for their country? I know Spain couldn't play their preferred doubles team last time due to the Olympic rules, but I can't remember what exactly the problem was.
hi RL, I only meant mixed dubs are a nonsense in the Olympics, because it has to be part of a national team.
yes, mixed in tournaments is great, fun for all, and of course it's Jamie's shining achievement to date.
but then it's just a scratch pairing, whoever is ready at that stage of the event

I'm really looking forward to the Olympic mixed event. I see Serena and Roddick are playing together. Eek.
Olympics rules - How to qualify
The top 56 players in the world as of June 2012 automatically qualify for the Games, with each country allowed only four entrants. There are also eight wild card picks, six of which are chosen by the International Tennis Federation and two by the International Olympic Committee. In the doubles tournament the top ranked 24 pairs qualify, with two per country. Again, there are eight wild card picks, all chosen by the ITF.
matches are best of 3 sets.
but the men's singles final is best of 5 sets
all dubs, including the mixed, have a tb10 if scores are one set each
Colin Fleming and Jocelyn Rae won the Commonwealth gold for Scotland - they could well be first choice for Britain in the mixed. Jocelyn is an Anglo-Scot - she qualifies to play for Scotland through having a Scottish father. Though maybe Andy would like to play with Elena Baltacha - the two British number ones together!
Thanks Harriet.

So although the top 56 qualify, they won't all be able to play, if there are more than four top 56 players in their country. I think that was part of the problem last time. Currently in the ATP top 56 Spain has 9, France has 6, USA has 5.
so Jamie must sustain his decent ranking position if he and Andy are to be the top ranked GB dubs team.
and they are not a customary team, there must be a date after which the rankings apply.
kidbro is playing in basel next week, not valencia.
Jamie and kidbro won in valencia last year, so Jamie has a lot of points to defend, somehow! this week
unfortunately kidbro has had to pull out of the tourny, having eschewed the gluten the glutes have been his downfall!
which has landed Jamie wth a right royal pain!
next week his ranking will plummet, just the incentive he needs? thanks kidbro!
Jamie can't rely on Andy helping him to boost his ranking all the time - about time he stopped messing about and found himself a regular partner!

I think that Andy playing doubles has helped him a lot with his game, so it has worked both ways. Maybe it's not so easy getting a permanent partner.

Maybe Jamie hasn't done as well as many hoped in the early days but this season has been relatively successfull, even if he'd still has some disappointing results. Of course many of the high points have come with Andy who of course is not always available. it's not always easy finding a regular partner, but Jamie could do with more continuity. Of course pity Jamie couldn't team up with Andy this week, but it was just bad luck!
I think Jamie will struggle to find a regular partner until he himself can find more consistency in his play. When he is playing well he is as entertaining to watch as anyone else on the circuit, but all too often his serve in particular seems to let him down (appears that way on livescore anyway).
I think you are right, Ally.
been following on LS the first round match in paris. jamie + colin fleming versus f.lopez+ f verdasco.
they won after the TB10, but colin must have nerves of steel.
jamie struggled to hold serve from the off, dfs and second serves galore; and in the tb, he was in a 'fair play crusade'
everytime his team had a minibreak, he gave it back!
fortuately verdassco dropped serve, and colin was able to come in at 9-8 for the W
if jamie is to have a career, he needs to get a serve, not a flashy just rock solid, for the sake of his unfortunate partner

The livescoreboard gets messed up though in doubles - especially in Tie-breaks and MTB/CTB's. At one point it was claiming an Ace was served by Lopez when in fact it was either Fleming or Murray because they were serving at the time and won the point.!!! Jamie gets nervous I think and then tries to hard; Colin seems good at keep him calm.

have to say Jamie's serve is at times something of a weakness
the ball toss is too high really but that shouldn't be a factor indoors so it probably is nerves
Jamie's charity (http://www.childrenoftheandes.org/) is a recipient of one of the 2012 "ATP Aces For Charity" grants.

jamie has put himself forward to play dubs with andy in the olympics. (at the RBS/museum talk last week)
will the fleming/hutchins pair also be able to play?
theres a maximum of 2 pairs per NOC.
theres a maximum of 2 pairs per NOC.
hi -J-, what's a NOC?
National Olympic Committees basically each country
another first round defeat, Marseilles, that won't be helping Jamie's bid to be in the Olympics

Ashh. I love Jamie and wish him well. He is a good player who's having a bad time.
I just wish he could find a permanent partner and stick with him for long enough to build some momentum.
