Last year on my birthday unable to celebrate in the usual way I invited girl friends to my home for a gathering to raise money for the PSPA. Everyone was very generous and we raised quite a lot of money. These contributions were also increased by donations to my Just Giving page which many of you supported.............This year am being a more adventurous. I am hosting a Charity Evening on Friday 22nd June in memory of Alan at West Park Rugby Club, St Helens. Now I realise this during the grass season and some of you will be at Queen's and already know that a few of you will be at concerts but would like to extend an invitation to everyone. If you fancy an overnight stay in St Helens there are quite a few hotels to choose from. The Eccleston Arms not far from the venue, Park View Hotel and Guest House also near the club, The St Helens Hotel, The Griffin Inn and two Premier Inns in the area. For those of you not going to Queen's it could be a little reunion of AMFFers. .....................The evening will include a quiz, teams of 4-6, Stand-Up or Silent Bingo and the Raffle. Tickets are £5 on the door which include refreshments. Entry to quiz £1 per person, Silent Bingo at £2 and Raffle tickets £5. I already have the promise of raffle prizes including alcohol, a St Helens Rugby League jersey, a Lancashire Rugby Union shirt, gift baskets etc. I would really love to see some of you there if you think you can spare the time to support this good cause. It's just one of the things I can do now in memory of Alan and supporting this little-known charity for this very cruel condition is close to my heart. Please think about it. Thanks.

Is your Justgiving page still open SG? If so, perhaps you could repost it here so that those of us who can't make your event can still support you. Good Luck - hope you raise lots of money.

Wishing you all th very best with th event. I am one of those heading to Queens. 2 long standing colleagues who retire at the end of this term are having their retirement 'do' that evening as well ( they have only just arranged it, am sorry to be missing it). It seems I shall be raising a lot of glasses between Glasgow airport and the pubs of Earls Coyrt,

Is there no way of doing it electronically - I don’t use cheques these days. It would upset my microchips......!!!

You could send it to my account. Some people have sent cash and it got here safely.

There is an option on paypal to pay friends so no commission is charged. Don't know if that is any use.

If you can pm me your account details, I will do the transfer today or tomorrow. Once you have got it you can buy the tickets on my behalf if you like? I would like to support your event, but can’t be there. I am having to palm off the dog for two weeks over that period as it is. Shetland and my first trip to Liverpool.

In the middle of painting at the moment.

It's just past 2 am and we are home after a wonderful evening. We raised over £800 and plus over £500 on my Just Giving page and cheques and cash donations the total is probably over £1500. Big count tomorrow. In the raffle Harriet was successful twice. Well done. Private message tomorrow. Thanks so much for your support. Goodnight all. X

Although last night's event was deemed a success and everyone told me they enjoyed themselves I won't be doing another one for reasons I'm just sharing on here and nowhere else. First of all the no-shows even though as recently as last week they were coming. 18 in total just didn't turn up and buffet paid for. Now some people don't seem to grasp the word CHARITY. It was £5 entrance which included a really lovely buffet. Then raffle tickets were £1 a strip. Some people bought one strip. The quiz was £1 per entrant. I was told that some people didn't want to do the quiz. It's fun for goodness sake and it was clearly explained on posters and other publicity platforms there would be a quiz. There were grumbles from a few that it was £1 for the stand-bingo. Only a handful of people joined in with roll a £1 coin at a bottle of whisky which was a lot of funl creating a lot of banter. Some people wouldn't even pay a £1 for choosing a number in a card, rather like a football card and the winner got half the proceeds! The prizes were very good, some worth £50 or more. I'm so grateful to my family and those friends who joined in everything including my son who successfully bid £130 for a signed Saints shirt though we were expecting at least £150. If people attend a charity event surely they expect to donate at least £20. Some tight wads got away with £5 + £1 for raffle tickets and they were fed enjoying a very generous buffet. It was a lot of work, getting lovely raffle prizes, phoning round and visiting shops and the theatre and cinema etc. Organising raffle tickets which I bought with pens, buying bingo tickets, booking the venue which thankfully was free as we were members there and everything else on the night. We did raise a lot of money but it could have been much more if people had turned up and if others there had understood what a charity event is all about. My rant is over. Thank you for reading. Thanks again to those who supported by donations to my Just Giving Page, cash, cheques and the purchase of raffle tickets. The first one was on my birthday last year at home so we have come full circle. As my son said to me "You need to rest now, you've done your bit".

Some people can be so strange - fancy going to a charity evening (if you actually turn up) then acting like a burden rather than support. So sorry it didn't go quite as planned, Mo, but you still did wonderfully and your son's quite right, you've done your bit.

The Charity Event raised just over £1500 with donations on the night, cheques, and My Just Giving Page. Thanks to everyone on here who contributed so generously. Information from the PSPA informs us that vital research is now taking place at Cambridge University funded by the Medical Research Council in PSP research and other research at Oxford University funded by the PSPA. This is hopeful news for the future. This will be my last post on Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and the PSPA.

Maureen, thanks for that positive news about research into PSP. You must be exhausted after last Friday and the lead up to it but you must feel that it was very much worthwhile, although feeling a bit let down on the day. You have done your bit and more for the cause so time to chill out and enjoy Wimbie. :strawberry:

Thanks and you're right. I did feel exhausted and a little flat. The long summer days are lonely without Alan but Wimbledon will keep me occupied. He used to say he could leave the house and I wouldn't know he'd gone when glued to the TV. Another thing I will miss is the excellent room service he provided throughout the fortnight. :strawberry::big grin:

Well done Maureen, that's a fantastic amount of money. You've also done a terrific job to raise awareness of this illness. You should be very proud. Now enjoy a break and some tennis!
