5-5 in decider between Berdych and Shapavalov. Come on Tomas :cheer:
Tomas fought back from 0-4 in tb, but couldn't quite grab it. Denis wins, shame, gone right off him after his match against Kyle.
oop for Wednesday - http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/scores/current/rome/416/daily-schedule
Kyle vs Pouille on not before 6.00 pm on the Next Gen Court.
Watched shappy, berdy and though I am a fan of shappy berdy has had such a poor year I really wanted a good week for him here. I really thought it would go his way. He had a chance too, but let it go. They tie break was so close I really though he could Get there after an epic fight back. Not to be.
Luckily the next match went my way. Goff was great until 5-1 and then seemed to lose it. He ended up losing the set from the position, with the Italian playing better and being pushed on by the crowd. After he had the doctor and the trainer on it looked bad. Thankfully he managed to get the second set. After which is was his opponent’s time for the trainer. Goff took the match in the third set and can go and have a well deserved rest now
I didn’t get to watch much of the theim v fog match but looking at the score line it’s a familiar story. I have to say I am not a fan of foggy anyway. His tactics often pass into unsportsmanlike conduct for me and he seems to deliberately distract his opponents with blow ups at will. I don’t know if he receives criticism for this but my big from is with his pattern of play. If he gets behind in a set that won’t be a decider he seems too often to give up the ghost. Today’s match was no exception. He gave up on the second set to focus on the third. It’s a tactic that works well. It makes it hard for his opponent to gain any momonetum or keep a rhythm and it saves him physical and emotional energy. But it doesn’t male for a good match. As we are starting to address matches where players don’t try I hope we can get to sets they just bin off too. Sadly in the end he took the match which frustrates me. Firstly to be subjected to his tactics again and secondly as a fan of theim. Not to mention the whilstling and calling out during play, booing etc from the crowd to his opponents.
Having said that given his tactics and the behaviour of the crowd in the past I wasn’t surprised he got the win. Nadal match on the other hand was little more than a walk over. His opponent was thrashed in a no time at all. Djoko and CB both came through their matches though CB was a closer one than I would expect. Djoko seemed a little distracted and frustrated but it could have been a result of the wind and it was only at times.
I did catch the nishi v dimi match and kept switching sides. It was a great match but I wasn’t Susprised when kei got the win in the end. Dimi seems to be a bit hot and cold at the moment and kei is working hard to fight his way back. Kohls had and easier match which might give him advantage over kei in the next round. Same could be true for Djoko as RV his next opponent Had a much tighter match against isner.
Cilic match from yesterday continues and Delpo v tsitsipas is on now. First set. On serve. Bedene went through after Anderson retired.
Wish I could have watched Fognini v Thiem, it promised to be the match of the day.
oop for Thursday - http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/scores/current/rome/416/daily-schedule
Kyle vs Zverev fourth on Petriangeli where play starts at 10.00 am with Jo Konta.

Didn't see Domi v Fognini either but a dramatic match by all accounts with the Italian with some of the usual tactics, heard Thiem lost his cool at one point too though. A bit of a blow for Dom after last week's run but perhaps not too surprising. Good battle with Kei and Dimi , though was hoping Grigor might come through it. Cilic got through in 3rd set breaker, whilst Delpo winner in straights. Shapovalov had a tight one with Haase but won 6-3 in 3rd after splitting breakers.
There were a number of great matches yesterday. Sadly today’s matches aren’t doing as well. I had no interest in the foggy match. Watching his tactics gets on my nerves! He won that won.
Delpo v Goffin was good in the first set which goff won. Delpo has some medical treatment on a groin injury. The second set was very close with breaks being exchanged and Delpo had the trainer on again. At one point he has a set point at 5-4 but after Goffin won the next two points to get to advantage, Delpo walked to the net and ended the match. I guess as a result of the groin injury he had treatment for. He certainly doesn’t want to aggravate it with the French open on the horizon. Hopefully he will be better by then. So goff goes through to the quarters. He will play the winner of Kyle v sascha
Bedene lost his match after also having treatment, in his match against CB in 3 sets. He’ll play the winner of paire v jammy cilic. Cilic took the first set but is a break down in the second. I’m crossing my fingers for paire.
Shappy sadly is taking a beating from Raffa. He has been gradually fading since 4-3. He lost the first set after only getting 2 points of Raffa’s serve. In the second set he’s a break down and at 2-1 has finally just got his first point on Raffa’s serve in this set. It’s ceratinlu earlier than in the first.
Silly shappy 40-0 up on his serve. Umpire says serve is in. Raffa challenges. There’s a delay while the mark is checked and the umpire overruled himself. Serve is out. Because of the delay shappy wanted a first serve. The umpire said no. Rather than accept it he got frustrated, focused on it and ended up dropping serve from 40-0 up. He was still going on at the change of ends. He needs to let it go!

Had young Denis shown any sportsmanship and offered a let against Kyle ( in *much* more obvious circumstances that it should be a let) then I'd have sympathy for him, but he didn't so I don't. Karma!

Well Denis was no threat in 2nd in any case though, was going to be tough but not looks like not best performance. Pity for Delpo but wise not to take undue risks, had been hoping Goffin would come through though.

I don’t have sympathy for him because I think he was wrong. I don’t think it would have been right to get a first serve again. It’s not the junior tour. I don’t have sympathy for players in general when they let their own tantruming distract them. It wasn’t so much karma as something daft he brought on himself. I know he’s young so maybe he will learn like others have that focusing on one small thing (even if you are in the right, which he wasn’t here) it actually does more harm than good in most circumstances.
As for the let in the match against Kyle, I agree with you RB I better sportsman would have given it. In time maybe that part of his personality and game will improve. Make him a better sportsman and better able to hold focus. It can often be something that comes with age, experience and maturity. . I guess time will tell.
Frustratingly jammy Cilic turned his match around and got the win. I really don’t want to see him at the WTF again. So I really hope his next match is his last this week lol

You're right. He does need to let it go. Silly stuff. Tantrums the last few tournaments are unacceptable. He never used to behave like this.

Bit of surprise as Fognini takes recovers from double break down to take first set from Nadal 6-4, however Rafa up 4-1 in 2nd (imagine he will make it count this time) Straightforward as Nadal takes the next 2 sets 6-1,6-2.
Great match between Nishi and Djoko. Super tennis. And Djoko wins!!

Yes became great battle, was rooting more for Nishikori really but credit to Djokovic for some amazing tennis in the crunch moments-perhaps finding his way back back into the big time. Nadal awaits in the semis, hopefully he has enough left to test him.
Well done to Novak. Really looking forward to the battle between him and Rafa tomorrow -it'll be like old times. :yahoo:

Nadal goes on to take it 6-3 for place in final. Positive week for Djokovic and good effort here, however think really had to get upper hand in 1st-Rafa pretty strong throughout.

I know I'm late with this (sooo busy with exam season) but horribly disappointed that Goffin went out. He's such a talent, produced magical tennis in the second set and to go break up in decider, but Sascha just hit harder and harder. Would have preferred Nole to have come through but pleased to read that he seems to be doing ok and can take positives. Although I find Marin and Sascha likeable characters no real interest in any of the remaining players.

Woot! Rafa rocks once again! Nice to see Djoko getting his mojo back. Major threat at the French Open most certainly.
Meanwhile Zverev is acting like a major diva. Was hoping Cilic would win the first set but, alas, no.
Well, I think he was a bit hard done by but then I suppose it's a matter of opinion.
That was a tough hard fought match. Sascha showed incredible resilience. Hope he has enough left to give Rafa a good test tomorrow.

Perhaps but don't go smashing your racquet etc. Saw Denis do enough of this type of behaviour earlier in the week. :grrr:

Again tight and well done Sacha, however don't think he'll have enough to really challenge Rafa.
Well done to Sascha but I think he's done!

Hope Rafa wins tomorrow - I might find him irritating, but nobody can deny he's a legend. On the other hand, I consider Sascha's no 3 status an anomaly that will be rectified when Andy, Nole, Stan, Kei and Raonic return. Speaking of Raonic, I feel sorry for him - I put Sascha's current skill set about on a par with Raonic's when he was fairly new to the tour, the Canadian hit a brick wall when he kept coming up against the big 4/5 so worked really hard and added loads to his game. Imo Raonic (and Kei) deserved to taste master's success before Sascha who faces a fraction of the oppo, but hey ho life ain't fair.

What on earth is going on with Rafa. Was mullering Sascha to take first set 6-1 then went completely to pieces, bizarre. 0-5 down in second and fighting to avoid first ever bagel on clay. Pretty sure that he'll regroup in the decider, but very unlike Rafa.

Sascha delaying Rafa between first and second serves on a bp - Rafa broken- oooo this is weird. I think Rafa is uptight b/c he really doesn't want to lose to Sascha, there's been a bit of edge ever since that Indian Wells match.
JAMES4578

Nadal a bit out of sorts atm but Sacha took chances and playing well, Zverev now up 3-1 in 3rd but rain delay-imagine Rafa will find a way.
RosieBear
20-05-2018, 16:23
Mixed feelings about the rain delay - may help Rafa who was looking out of sorts, but then again Rafa lost his first service game in all three sets - can't afford a slow start upon resumption. Rafa's a legend for a reason so have to think he will find a way but not overly confident given his odd slump.
Just popped in to watch end of match and they are showing a repeat of an old final. Did they say the rain delay was likely to be a long time?

Now then. That's better, Rafa clearly had a word with himself during the break and again playing the kind of tennis we expect from him.

Rafa wins all 4 games on resumption - back to vintage Nadal after very odd phase  not a fan per se, but see all the big 4 as the golden benchmark that we want upcomers to have to meet. Once Sascha becomes better at the net and adds more shot variation he'll def make it. Think Domi closer at the minute though.
Well done Rafa
JAMES4578

Obviously Nadal picked it up when it mattered, but Sacha just couldn't quite find the attacking tennis required on resumption-potential and a talent but needs to add more to his game. Whilst rain delay . Target surely must now be to go deep in a slam with some disappointing past results , talk of 2nd favourite probably not realistic.
How often have we seen a rain delay change the momentum in a match? Rafa definitely played better at the end but I do feel sorry for Sascha - if they had played on he may well have won - who knows?

Was bit of a blow for Sacha but not sure as significant as some claiming, still would've been tough with only 1 break.
Who knows? Rafa was definitely rattled before the break.

Wow Rafa's really a fighter. I thought he was a goner. Lucky escape with the rain break. I thought it was going to be Hamburg final 2007 all over again for Rafa. Really happy for him tho'. I think Zverev is a definite contender for the RG title!
