GLASGOW CHALLENGER 2018 - new event

The Glasgow Trophy is an inaugural men’s indoor tournament of ATP Challenger Tour level. The tournament will provide high-level competition on British soil ahead of the highly-anticipated grass court season, and is set to attract British and international stars to compete for the $100,000 title. Follow the Brits live through live streaming on British Tennis Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/britishtennislta/

There was a rumour that Andy Murray might return to the tour at this event but that hasn't proved to be the case. Initially there were no British players on the Entry List but Wildcards were given to some for the Main Draw and Qualifying event.

I enjoyed my trip to Glasgow Challenger today. Dan v Ed was very entertaining with Dan having the upper hand throughout and the backing of most of the crowd. I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout with lots of kids there. Dan is obviously not back to full fitness yet but his skills have not gone awol and his determination was pleasingly evident.

On either side of Dan's match, 2 youngsters (Jacob Fearnley (16) and Connor Thomson (17)) played vastly experienced pros and each fought very well and showed why they are well placed in the junior rankings.

Leon and Colin Fleming were courtside and I also saw some familiar faces from DC matches, including Jamie from Stirling Barmy Army. However I didn't spot Angie but she might have been alongside Leon of course. ;)

Angie is there on Monday. I had a long chat with Jamie from Barmy Army- he was there to support friends playing. He was very friendly - and they are crossing everything Glasgow gets the tie. ( and that DC changes don't go ahead). Had great fun volunteering this morning- good variety of roles, courtside helping folk find seats, in the corridor directing folk through bag search - and a bouncer at the player cafe. They must have their meal token!!! Saw Dan a few times but there was always someone talking to me so didn't get chancero speak to him. Looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow. Then that's me til next weekend when I get to be a spectator. Some folk doing loads of volunteer shifts - sadly gotta stick with the day job!

Another good win for Dan 4 & 1 against Barry. 5 pts for qualifying puts him in rankings at about #1200. A few wins in the main draw will take him up quickly.

Just had a thoroughly enjoyable 2 days volunteering at the Glasgow Challenger. Very well organised and the 500 seat stand has been well filled for the qualifying event- even with a big Glasgow football match on. I had a range of jobs- courtside helping folk find seats and stopping them enter during play, bouncer on the door of the player cafe and various crowd control areas. Most of today was courtside- a great job as you get to see the tennis. Saw most of Dan"s match today, Highlight has to have been finally getting to meet our lovely Leon. First was while Judy's pal Laura was chatting to us- he came over to speak to her and I asked him how the football had gone .( he was in good spirits over that) Then later folk were asking him for photos so I decided I had to do likewise. Think I'm still scraping myself off the ceiling. Looking forward to going back next weekend as a spectator but definitely recommend tennis volunteering.

The thread for new Challenger events has been split so there is a a separate one for the Glasgow event for future reference. Posts relating to Glasgow have been moved over here. We'll set one up for Loughborough shortly.
