Andy is heading to Basel according to this tweet for Stuart Fraser.
Intrigued 2 see tht @andy_murray (http://twitter.com/#%21/andy_murray) has chosen to head to Basel nxt week alongside Djokovic & Federer. Not played there since 2005 (reached QF)
He is on their Official website having been given a wild card. He is out I feel to show Nole and Fed where he is now, this will set him up for Paris and O2.

Now we know where Andy will be playing next week it's time to sort out the tourney threads ......
:)
Here (in German) is the Tournament Director's announcement on the Basel website.
Interesting that Andy has chosen Basel over Valencia - the court conditions should be better preparation for Paris. Also it would be useful to get some match practice in against Fed/Djokovic ahead of the tour finals.
Though accroding to @stu_fraser, Sky have chosen to show Valencia next week! Would be a real shame if there's no tv coverage of Basel, it's such a good line-up as well.

Yes I do. So I would assume Sky could easily change if needed.

Yes I remember hearing this. :) Perhaps they had to decide by a certain date and just assumed Andy would opt for Valencia again. I hope they are able to change, can't imagine their viewing figures will be that great if they stick with Valencia.
Yes Katie. One would think that at least one of the sports channels on Sky would broadcast a tournament
where 3 of the top 4 were playing. Maybe there will be a stream somewhere.

Go Andyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Andy playing here will mean that Andy is the no 2 seed and Federer is pushed down to number 3 seed.
Won't this be the first time Andy has been seeded above Federer in a tournament?
With a bit of luck Fed will be in Nole's half of the draw, although if Andy can continue his Far East form then he is more than capable of beating them one after the other!
Very interesting that Andy has chosen to play Basel - he must be feeling very confident - great stuff!

Basel is scheduled to be shown on tennistv.com, but only from Thursday.
I heard Marcus ask Andy where he would play, Marcus said they would show on Sky wherever he choose to play! Does anyone remember hearing this?
They did say that. but I have looked ahead on sky text and it is definately Valencia that is scheduled to be shown starting on the 30th October. I don't know whether they will change it but then I can't recall Sky Sports ever showing Basle.:)

Yippee!! Glad there is not a third Andy-free week. I'm thinking this means he is feeling fit and confident.
I guess as a WC he is not seeded and could be drawn against a hard opponent = and will have to play in the first round? Roll on the draw.
Well, I must say that I'm rather disappointed he's not playing Valencia. Apart from Andy, all the players I'd prefer to see are in Valencia, not Basel.

The Wildcard makes difference where seeding is concerned so the draw will show him as 2nd seed.
This is a 32 draw so everyone will be playing a R1 match.

yes I did hear it, but didn't necessarily take him at fave value! Maybe bit of a surprise he'll be at Basle but it is the stronger event and all being well Andy wants more of a challenge. Just hope he will be peaking for Paris and London though. A pity it doesn't seem as if this will be on TV at all though.

Surprised that Andy's playing this and not Valencia, hope he doesn't run out of steam for the rest of the year. Wonder whether he's getting a huge appearance fee to swing his decision????

Well, he's had 2 weeks off and at least if he plays here he'll have some match practice under his belt ahead of the Paris Masters - and on a similar speed surface. He gets another week off between Paris and WTF where he'd play alternate days for sure so the scheduling isn't that off really.
+ he's possibly looking at his ranking points to ensure he ends the year as #3.
On Monday he'll drop 45 points from Valencia 2010. If he doesn't play a 500 next week those 45 will be replaced by a 0 from Rotterdam where he went out in R1. His other 3 500 countables are Tokyo 2011, Monte Carlo 2011 and a Zero pointer from Dubai which he pulled out of.
So, whilst those 45 points don't mean a lot to outsiders Andy might have got his tennis brain in gear and decided to make sure Roger doesn't get ahead. Not that he can this week anyway because he won Basle last year and has to win this year to defend his points.

Re the ponderings whether he decided on Basel because of a huge appearance fee - I seriously doubt it. With Fed and Djoker already there, I expect the coffers have about run dry.
I think it's great that he's chosen Basel - it shows that he's brimming with confidence IMO. I really hope that he manages to keep his run going to the end of the season - it would be such a good launch pad for 2012.
one word, interesting:)
Totally off topic J but what are you paying for fuel at the moment? I filled up with diesel yesterday and it was £159.9 per litre - even by island standards that's steep!

Andy has chosen Basel, I guess because they use the exact same surface and balls as the London O2 He will be quite familiar when they get to the end of season finale, also good practice if he has to play either Nole or Roger before Paris and London. LSH is just as good as Sky with better commies than Sky. I usually listen to the French commies if there are Frenchmen playing. they are far better than the English speaking ones, who are often on Andy's case.

Wot's RET?
When I was up in Glasgow for DC in July and September the unleaded petrol prices were between 4 and 8 pence per litre less than around here but we've had a drop in price over the last month. Best I don't say what it is 'cos it's a lot cheaper than your islanders fuel.

Hi everyone, feel a bit out of touch cos have 2 kids poorly, when is the draw? Worried I'll miss it for FTM altho see there is no thread yet.
the draw i think is being held tomorrow afternoon/evening -
now we all know the rankings as they stand at the moment -
and that tournament draw rankings/seeds nos. 1 and 3 with 2 and 4 are how they are normally paired on the two halves of the draw
however -
would it be a huge surprise if neither Andy and Novak - feature in federer's half of the draw!!?
Nole and Andy will be in opposite halves, so Federer has to get one of them.

My guess is that Nole and Fed will be on opposite sides of the draw because they will be hoping for a Djoko/Fed final.

Is it definite that Andy will be no.2 seed here? What date do they look at the rankings to fix the seedings, and is there any chance that the organisers could do a Wimbledon and set their own seedings? I suppose I will find out when the draw takes place anyway, can't help being impatient ;-) (BTW is there a wink smiley anywhere on this new forum, it's my favourite ;-) )

As Jay and Pam have already said, the draw is at 4pm this afternoon.
N.B. That's 4pm Basle, 3pm UK but we're not likely to get full details then.
Most tourneys take an hour or so to get the draw onto a PDF so allow time for that.
GoldenLady (and others) - if in doubt your first port of call is to check the information in the first post of a tournament thread where we usually put the draw information/timings.
The Entry List also gives the information on seedings/ranking dates.
:)
In general, players have to commit to entering 6 weeks before the tournament starts and it's their ranking on that date which dictates whether they are entitled to a direct acceptence onto the Entry List. The Seedings are based on the rankings published the week before the tournament starts i.e. Ranking on Monday 24th Oct dictates seeding places for tournament starting the 31st Oct.
Usually only the #1 and #2 seeds have specific spots; in theory the other players, starting with the seeds in order, are drawn at 'random'.
*cough*

Such a tough draw! Am hoping he gets off to a much better start against Haase this time! Andy's draw is just full of people who he's struggled with in the past. But a Fed/Andy semi would be good to see :)
They are all top players, so chances are any draw would have been tough, top half, Baggy, Troicki, Berdych, Nishikori, Melzer and young, they could all have given Andy real tough matches. Bottom half are all beatable for Wawrinka and Roger because of home support but Andy likes to silence home support. Go Andy go. good luck. :cheer::cheer::cheer:

I'm sure Andy is up to the challenge re Robin Haase, he's been beaten very early on in tournaments just lately and not by top seeds either. Andy has beaten all those in his draw, and if he's playing as he played just lately he'll win this. Federer and Nole will be ring rusty.

(I won't say anything - more than I said on twitter xD - on Andy's singles draw. Just that's a nightmare for my nerves xD)

Well it is certainly good practice before Bercy ;)
Andy will have to start well to counter Haase, then see if Stan is on or off form, cope with Tipsy who is charging through to try and get to O2 (but possibly weary after two ATP titles or one title and one final in Russia), then Fed who will not be happy with Andy overtaking him in the rankings and meeting him on home ground, then the form player of the year, if all goes well. All in a 32-draw event!!!!
Not being an old cynic or even one to throw accusations around but if it's a DRAW, as in "luck of" Mr Federer is very lucky isn't he?:hmm::banghead:
Sure is SG!!!!
tough tough draw for Andy!! - however somehow I'm really looking forward to this tournament -
Andy obviously picked to go to Basel to play with the other top players around!! -
come on Andy!! - can't wait for it to start!!
really good test for Andy, presumably that's why he chose Basel. How does Fed manage to get another easier draw?
Looking forward to this week, wish it was televised.

You know what, Fed's draw looks lucky up until the semis. I reckon he didn't want that prospect at all, as a final appearance is surely in jepordy! So lucky? Perhaps not.x

Doubles draw added to the first post of the thread and FTM has been set up for 4 events in Basel.
:)
Main draw play does not start until Monday 31st October.
Since Jamie is playing with Andy (and Flemchins are also in Basel for the doubles) it's probably best to have just this one main thread and have match threads for Andy/Jamie doubles in Andy Rules too.

You know what. I strongly suspect he (1) wants a pop at Roger to show he deserves to be no. 3, (2) would like to win the tourney and show he is really on form and (3) wants to practise using the O2 balls etc. Personally, if Andy wins this tourney it would be great on the one hand but it might make him favourite for Bercy and the O2 and I am not sure whether flying under the radar might be a healthier position to be in. Oh well! Nice dilemma though! :)

Just checked out the players order pics on the atp website. A sweet sight. One more shuffle to the left Andy! Happy days!!!!!!!!
Looking at the Basel site it looks as if Andy won't be playing singles until Wednesday, they've put a list of players for Monday and Tuesday on their news re ticket sales.

The Basel OOP for Monday is up - link here.
As it's a 32 draw they'll probably drag out the early rounds ...
CENTRE COURT - starting 14.45 (13.45 UK)
Baghdatis v Troicki
17.30 - Opening Ceremony
Federer v Starace
Melzer v Young
COURT 2 - starting 14.45 (13.45 UK)
Kubot/Stepanek v Fish/Roddick
Llodra/Zimonjic v Lammer/Sadecky
ensuring the goat gets maximum possible rest between rounds, watch Andy get a weds start
Yes, my guess is that they will schedule him to play doubles on Tuesday and his first single's match on Wednesday. Not to worry - oor boy's up for it!

Considering that Andy has won three titles in a row very recently, I don't see why he isn't already a favourite.

Still I do think we should get in touch with the Basel organisers and tell them this is not acceptable. By the way Sky Sports is showing Basel instead of Valencia, it is now showing on their guide. Starts 1pm on Thursday with highlights in the evening.
 Totally unacceptable in my view. About time Andy really started stamping his feet - he's the world number 3 for goodness sake!!
At least we will be able to watch him on TV Thursday onwards showing why he is world Number 3 and can deal with all this.
It's a shame Andy and Jamie can't play their doubles match before Wednesday - would have helped Andy get used to the conditions in Basel ahead of his singles match. I see that Haase is playing doubles on Tuesday so he'll be used to the court conditions.

But seriously. Stu Fraser has just tweeted:-
Mardy Fish had to retire after first game in Basle after suffering a left hamstring strain. Race to London has become interesting again!
Wonder if he'll pull out of the doubles with ARod?
They beat Kubot/Stepanek yesterday 6'3, 6'7, 11'9.
The World Tour Finals still has some undecided places and the leading contenders aren't doing themselves any favours!
Tsonga is currently a set down to Spaniard Javier Marti in Valencia R1.
Gilles Simon lost in R1 yesterday.
Fish out of Basel (making Nole's half even easier!)

I didn't think Federer would be playing again until Thursday! So he'll have completed round 2 when Andy's only completed round 1.
Agree about the doubles scheduling making no sense, they could have scheduled it later than that. And if Andy ends up having a long singles match, then there's going to be a large gap of no play on Court 2.
Fish pulled out with a hamstring injury. Shame, I'd like him to make the O2.

A real downer when I heard the news but of course no point in taking any undue risks with Paris and London around the corner. Frustrating the way it happened, but looks like it won't be too serious. Feel sorry for Jamie too of course, but it was unavoidable.
Hope its a small injury and Andy recovers quickly.
I bet you Sky are not very happy having changed their schedule form Valcencia to Basel because Andy was meant to be playing.
Well, I'm not very happy either! Obviously I'm very sad that Andy has had to pull out of Basel. But as I said before, he was the only player in the Basel draw that I was interested in. Most of my favourite players are in Valencia. And I haven't been able to find a stream for Valencia all day :crying:
Its such a shame. With the Joker looking a bit rusty and Federer not impressing either, Andy had a real chance of winning this tournament. Just when everything was going so well this happens. Have consoled myself with some wine and a couple of recorded matches where he beat Federer and Djokovich.
I'm also consoling myself with some wine - after starting a diet at the weekend, it's now all gone awry :shamed:

Yes, unfortunate Colin/Ross couldn't quite keep the momentum going in the breaker! Baggy is a set up on Nole, having dominated the opener 6-2 so the world no1 with some work to do. Nole up 3-2 in the 2nd,on serve. Tight match but Kei beat Kukushkin 6-4 in the 3rd earlier.
