Venus Williams out of RollyG2018
@Tennis (https://twitter.com/Tennis) 3 minutes ago (https://twitter.com/Tennis/status/1000757916008316928)
Venus Williams has been eliminated from the #FrenchOpen (https://twitter.com/hashtag/FrenchOpen?src=hash). She fell in her opening-round match against Wang Qiang, who won 6-4, 7-5. Venus did her best to battle back into it in the second, but she came up just short.

Venus does not have best results on clay, however a surprise going out to 91st ranked Wang. Probably bigger shock in defending champion and 5th Ostapenko going out though Victor Kozolova also won two previous matches.

Petra Kvitova the latest casualty after she goes out in two breakers to Anett Kontaveit unfortunately, following on from on from 4th seed Svitolina's exit yesterday. Sloane Stephens beat Giorgi 8-6 in 3rd and very easy win for Muguruza over Stosur. Meanwhile Sharapova thrashes 6th seed Karolina Pliskova 6-2,6-1, will meet Serena next if the American overcomes 11th seed Julia Georges (having come from behind to beat Barty in last match).
Ahh Kvitova is my second biggy in my pickem and TFF to go out.

In match carried over from yesterday 2nd seed Caroline Wozniacki's bid ended by 14th seeded Russian Daria Kasastkina 7-6,6-3. A surprise though Kasastkina has 2 previous wins this season and took it to Caroline.

Williams pulls out due to arm injury. Big shame.
What a shame - I was looking forward to that.

Aw no, I was looking forward to the big grudge match as well.

Me too - was hoping Serena would come out on top for sure.

Disappointing though may not have lived up to the billing. (not great match up for Sharapova even with relative lack of matches) Serena/Venus lost 3rd set of doubles 6-0 yesterday (even if it was against 3rd seeds) so wondered if there was some issue there. Think Muguruza fav in that quarter (and Gabrine only had to play 2 games before Tsurenko retired!) ) and may have been the case even if as I expected Serena got through.

Semis are Halep v Muguruza and Stephens v Keys, at moment Garbine would seem fav but Simona eager for first slam. Garbine brushed aside Sharapova 6-2,6-1 and in great form even if disappointing as a contest. Mind you Maria had error strewn performance and serve was not effective. Simona lost 1st on TB to Kerber but came through 6-2 in 3rd (bits I seen in 1st half of match were entertaining )
Vamos Garbine (the only woman left in my dream team).

Convincing win over Mugu sees Halep into the final. Rooting for her so hard, her struggles for a maiden slam remind me of Andy's. This one's yours, Simona :cheer::cheer::cheer:

Sorry to miss all that match. Yes Go Simona - I really hope she does it this time!

Halep was in great form though Muguruza had poor start-expected more from Gabrine and couldn't take advantage of 4-2 lead in set 2. . Some great rallies in 2nd though and long game at 4 all proved crucial. Sloane Stephens has just beaten Madison Keys 6-4 , 6-4 to join her in final. Sloane the better defender of the two Americans , Simona the fav but disappointments before and Stephens may not necessarily make it easy for her however may be her time.
Really hope Halep can do this!

Halep for me too - she's been so close, think it's her time.
No sign of nerves from Stephens so far... Looks like this baseline slugfest could go on for a while.

Halep having to work so hard for every point at the minute :faint:
JAMES4578

Stephens with the stronger start and pretty much dictating Halep right now ,though Simona kept it to a single break. Looked like half chance at 15-30 but Sloane holds for 5-2.

Oooh Simona will kick herself for missed return on bp. Sloane serves out first set. Agree with MB, Halep isn't going to win this from the back of the court, needs to mix it up at the net.

Halep with it all to do as goes down break at start of 2nd, some great points but definitely needs to vary tactics. A more aggressive Simona right back on track, 4 successive games for 4-2!
RosieBear
09-06-2018, 14:25
Back on serve. Risky tactic to hang back and hope oppo fades. Hope Simona can wrangle proper control, c'mon!

Now 4 all and a few loose ones from Simona again putting set in balance, needs to step up again!

Simona took it to Sloane as she had to at end of set, helped by a few errors. Hopefully an entertaining 3rd to decide champion!
Sloane has gone off the boil slightly imo. I really want Simona to win, doesn't seem right that Sloane will have two Slams to her none.

Halep with the momentum at 2-0, however in this match can't take anything for granted!

Simona 3-0 now and looking energised but can't let up.....C'MON!!

Omg, Simona playing like a woman possessed. Reminds me of that fifth set uso 2012 when Andy said no regrets and blew Nole away. Simona just wants it more.

Simona takes it 3-6,6-4,6-1 to take first slam, well done! Bit of a disappointing decider but Halep in some awesome form and Stephens couldn't respond, still Sloane can take credit for good run and put Simona under pressure for a while. It was an enjoyable final!

Great result. Looked like Sloane was going to walk it, but Simona proved she was stronger.
Had a few tears in my eyes when Simona won that game to go 4 -0 up. So happy for her. She totally deserves it.
Sure Andy must feel happy for her too after his experience.

Am I the only person who wanted Sloane to win? I really liked her attitude when she won the US Open and didn't much like Halep's at the Fed Cup re Jo. However whatever the result, it was an enjoyable, ferocious match.

Looks like you are! ;)
Halep calmed the crowd down at Fed Cup by appealing to them to be quiet. She did all she could. It wasn't up to her to cuddle Johanna when she started crying.

I'm not a huge fan of Simona but did want her to win. Having followed Andy's struggle to win his first GS, I was sympathetic to Simona having been so close 3 times. So 3 first time GS winners in the last 3 slams. I wonder if someone else can join the party at Wimbledon.

Nope tbh I didn't mind who won this one. I really like Sloane too and her attitude is so lovely (compared to other players I could mention) but I am happy for Simona as she really deserved to win it after losing in three finals. Maybe coz it reminded me of oor Andy.
