A thread for discussing general aspects of British tennis and British players who do not have their own thread (2018 only):

This is positive news: I have long felt that the UK should have a version of the US college system:

'How British tennis is planning for life after Andy Murray'

https://metro.co.uk/2018/06/14/british-tennis-planning-life-andy-murray-7628683/

From the article: 'On Tuesday, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced Stirling and Loughborough Universities as the locations for Britain’s first national tennis academies, while outlining an ambitious project designed to revamp the sport in this country. In the first major act under new chief executive Scott Lloyd, the organisation will embark on a 10-year plan designed to boost numbers of British players in the top-100.'

WC Brit Harriet Dart puts out big serving Kristyna Pliskova 6-3 in 3rd (sister of Karolina who took Serena to Tb in 1st set of French encounter) at Eastbourne . Match switched to centre at last minute but only first 2 sets played there, just when seemed about to stop for night completed on court 1! Still perhaps was more likely to get the win this evening, She also has WC for Wimbledon.

That's great news about Harriet! She's been climbing the rankings well in the past few weeks.

Lloyd Glasspool (538) has just won the Iowa City ITF, beating Karlovskiy ranked 245 in the final. A good win. Well done.

Ha snap - I just put this in the WTA thread! Too many options! But what a great win!

Liam Brody and Jay Clarke are drawn against each other in the US Open qualies - what really bad luck!

And the same for Katy Boulter and Naomi Brody in the women's qual,

I've just read about that as well, jagmad.

I believe Jack Draper beat Filip Bergevi in last Saturday's final at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton. He then got compared to Andy Murray.

Blow it I'm gonna say it: So why the hell didn't we get Jack Draper v Jay Clarke as the 5th rubber in Glasgow?
If you asked them they both would'ave been more than up for it. IMHO.

Today has been a good one for GB tennis as, in addition to Kyle's great win in Antwerp and Luke & Johnny's in Stockholm, Jonny Gray and Emma Raducanu won 15K Futures in Tunisia and Turkey respectively. Emma's win probably will take her to top spot in the WTA rankings for a 15 year old - for 1 week at least as she turns 16 next month.

BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/60621966) - Lily Miyazaki switches nationality from Japanese to British

World 206-ranked Lily Miyazaki has decided to play for Great Britain in future.

Miyazaki, 26, lived in Japan for the first six years of her life before settling in London aged 10, where she trained at the Sutton Tennis Academy.

Japanese citizens are not allowed to hold dual nationality, so Miyazaki has opted for British citizenship.

She will become the British number seven, and eligible to play for GB in the Billie Jean King Cup.

Miyazaki been playing full-time since 2019 and has won four singles titles on the second-tier ITF Tour.

She recently made her WTA tour debut at the 2022 Lyon Open after qualifying for the main draw where she reached the round of 32.

Harriet Dart lost first set 3-6 in her 1st QR and lost second 3-6. Harriet was fighting but too many errors especially forehand.

She played a 34 year old German named Tatjana Maria & I suspect hated it. The German's a pusher. I didn't see the first set & when I started watching the German was slicing everything.....it looked like she couldn't hit a drive forehand. (but she eventually did) She was basically giving Dart junk balls & making her beat herself. The German's defensive skills were pretty good, but I think I only saw her hit two winners, a volley & a smash. Dart was pretty good at the the net, but she smacks everything......no nuances in her game. And a few times a lob would have been useful......didn't seem to occur though.
It looked like she almost walked off without shaking hands, & she might have said a few words. Deserved or not.....? Her coach has a job to do.

Yes. Sadly comes as no surprise. One daft parochial and short-sighted decision after another by the LTA. Really pleased things being done differently with/by our next big star, Emma - eg her trophy tour.

Are the Brits on a post Wimbledon holiday ? Apart from Andy in Newport, none of the main British players (Dan, Cam, Emma, Heather, Katie's) played last week or are playing this. Only the Challenger boys, Liam, Jay, Paul and some of the doubles guys are playing this week. I suppose as they were all in the country for Wimbledon, it makes sense to have an extended break.

Have the Brits started a secret breakaway tour, just for themselves. Still no main tour appearances by DE CN, HW, ER, KB. Perhaps they decided to go by minibus to Europe and are still sat on the approach to Dover.

I assume they are not waiting for visas as they can apply a long time in advance. Some of the Work Championship athletes didn't manage to get theirs in time as the USA are very behind in issuing visas.
