Most impressive about Pieters is how he survived being partnered with woeful Westwood on the first morning to go on and play like he has. Rory said that playing with Thomas had never been discussed (let alone having practised together) before the Friday afternoon pairings had been announced. Makes you wonder what Clark and his entourage of vices talk about.
Your guess is as good as mine Bardot! So it's McIlroy v Reed first up and poor old Fitzpatrick has to wait 'til last. Talk about drawing the short straw - if it's down to him at the end what pressure that will be and if it's all over by then he will feel it's not worth playing. Poor lad - it wonder what he's done to upset the Captain!
even if it means the difference between retaining the cup or not i would like to see woeful westwood get tanked
incidentally little picture of THE ryder cup ;)

And I thought I was weather-beaten!
I take it that's your course, J - is it you holding the cup?
I don't have the luxury of a cab on my tractor

I'm coming to Harris for a week next summer - I'll pop in and see you. How much is your green fee?

For you alis nothing
Looks like I'll have to bring my clubs then!
Oh Rory - how did you miss that?
Oh dear, Europe, I fear there isn't a replay of Medinah here. McIlroy will be absolutely gutted at losing his match.

Oh gosh I really do hope Darren's career won't be remembered in the same vain as Faldo's 'a useless Ryder Cup captain' but I fear it will be :sad::sad:
Pieters has been magnificent
Cabrera too
Rory also but unfortunately today was a stretch too far
Rose out of form, no more needs said as was Kaymer
Willett done for before it even started, with a brother like that who needs enemy's
Westwood, gawd bless trying hard
Sullivan and Wood a Ryder cup too soon for the both of them
which leaves us with Fitzpatrick under used, under valued
:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
not to forget Henrick Stenson and Serigio Garcia, both magnificent, each in his own way
It's official Westwood the man who lost the match giving USA the Ryder cup , disgraceful. He was ever allowed near the team
Well done the USA - good win.
Another European win would have been a bit boring.......rather like Djokovic winning everything all the time.
Why all the love for Fitzpatrick? He just lost 4&3 to a guy who only scored 2 birdies! Of the rookies, only Pieters and Cabrera Bello of the rookies did anything all weekend.
No apology from Clark shocker
Spectacular golf! I have never seen so many putts drained, esp from USA. Well done them...they can have the trophy for 2 years...we will regain it in 2 years time!!
Blood is thicker than water it would seem.
Danny Willett @Danny_Willett
Very strange week here at the Ryder cup.. Tried my best but played poorly.. Unfortunately some american fans showed that @P_J_Willett was in fact correct.. Nothing to blame my bad play on.. But still shows that sometimes fans don't know when to call it a day.. Shame really!!
He probably should have kept quiet but it's quite the contrast to the smug aloofness of Darren Clark and his "we win as a team, lose as a team, shoulder to shoulder" twaddle.
So if the critics of Darren Clarke had been captain, who would they have fielded?
One team had to win and one lose. Our team did the latter and not all down to Westwood. Had his been the last match with everything hinging on it then yes. Plain fact of the matter is that the Europeans need to go away and practise putting.......the Americans had difficulty missing! They deserved to win. Other than play better I'm not sure what would have improved team Europe's chances by changing anything.
Well said pabbers. Totally agree. And the whole thing was exciting to watch...all the guys put on a great show of golf.

oh i dont know any one of the six europeans ranked higher than westwood would be a good starting point, no? with my personal preference going to russell knox not only WR 19 but 7th in the us pga order of merit so well used to taking on the yanks in thier own back yard
and yes westwood desicion can be seen to directly cost us the match he lost all three matches he was involved in, gifting the americans a six point swing
if people believe teams should be picked on auld pals act or through long gone past glories thats up to them. me i would much rarther see a team picked on merit
Knox and Casey were the 2 I thought were unlucky to miss out, although to be fair I probably would have had one o them in place of Pieters who really shone.
Not verified, but I read somewhere that Europe scored 9 points out of a possible 13 in matches not involving an Englishman :sofa:

Clarke was asked at the end if there was anything he would change and he almost admitted it was a mistake to drop Cabrera Bello from the Saturday four-ball (duh!) but his ego prevented him and said he wouldn't change anything. Other than the lucky strike of Pieters & McIlroy he handled the rookies poorly believing that the seasoned veterans of Westwood & Kaymer would eventually come good. After their first morning performances they should have been sat out until the singles. Their wealth of Ryder Cup experience could have handled that whereas the rookies would have thrived (like Pieters & Cabrera Bello) on playing more on the first two days.
3 Captain's picks is too many and encourages cronyism in place of form as apparently Luke Donald was likely to be the third pick until Pieters won in Denmark, incredible.

Casey ruled himself out by not joining the European tour. Strange decision unless he's after an American passport. ;)
Knox most definitely should have been there - he has every reason to feel hard done by.

Was at the Portugal Masters today and was thrilled to see Podraig Harrington win his first tournament in a long time. Wasn't sorry to see Andy Sullivan come a close second as I'm still miffed with his performance in the Ryder Cup!
Oh well done Padraig! So pleased to hear that. Am very fond of Padraig.
This really made me smile!

Fantastic - well done Matthew.
Sergio looking good at Augusta tonight, although he's been known to implode before now. To finally win his first major on Seve's 60th birthday could be very emotional.
He's fine, Seve must be watching over him again

So pleased for Sergio!!
Fantastic - absolutely delighted that Sergio won. :yahoo: I would have been happy if Justin had won too but it's great to see Sergio winning a Major at last.:yahoo:
Totally concur with that Alis!!
Agree Alis. Very happy for Sergio.
Well done Tommy Fleetwood finishing 4th in the US Open with a level-par 72 to cap a career best performance.
Tommy said he was looking forward for The Open at Royal Birkdale next month. “It’s going to be brilliant playing for the home crowd. Not many people get the chance to play a major or even a tournament where they’ve grown up, so it’s special for me."
Congratulations to Brooks Koepka on claiming his first major tournament success at Erin Hills.
The American's triumph made it the seventh consecutive major that has crowned a first-time winner.
The American's triumph made it the seventh consecutive major that has crowned a first-time winner.
Amazing - could you see that happening in tennis?
No golf is really interesting for that reason - an unheralded player can play well for 4 days and end up with a major trophy.
Great excitement here in Portstewart Golf Club, where I am a member and play my golf. The Irish Open starts tomorrow. The pro-am is today, but I am unashamedly staying put in front of my green TV screen all day! Wouldn't miss the tennis for anything today! The golf is on Sky and RTE, worth watching for the scenery alone! I may pay a little visit tomorrow, but tennis always comes first. If you don't want to read the whole of the link below, scroll down to listen to Justin Rose's interview!

I took this picture of the view from the first tee last Wednesday. The stands are just off to the left of the picture.

Johanna's match was well worth staying at home for. To pot with the pro-am!! Will definitely be staying home on Friday so it's Irish Open tomorrow followed by "Alliss through the looking glass" tomorrow evening. Peter Alliss will be spending an evening with us members!
Hope you have a great time at the Irish Open, Pat; it looks a great entry list. Hope the weather stays fine.

The Irish Open this weekend to be followed by the Scottish Open next weekend at the Dundonald Links, Troon

Shame they both clash with Wimbledon.
Have done my duty and went to the golf today. Jaw dropping to see how far some of them drive the ball! (Just going by how far I usually get which clearly isn't very far!) Had a fun evening with Peter Alliss. Not going back till Sunday because there will be no tennis to miss on Sunday!
Jon Rahm, the 22 year old very much up and coming Spanish golfer won the Irish Open today. Although it rained all day today, there was very little wind all 4 days to seriously challenge them! Lucky them! We rarely get 4 days in a row in Portstewart without a hefty breeze blowing! Look out for him at The Open in Birkdale.
Thanks for the info, Pat. Glad you enjoyed the Irish Open and the weather was fair - hope it was well supported and raised lots of money for Rory's Foundation. :).
Well done Jon Rahm.
Jon was the number one golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for a record 60 weeks and was the low amateur at the 2016 U.S. Open. Prior to the 2016 U.S. Open, he was ranked No. 551 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Today he has reached a career high ranking of 8 after winning the 2017 Irish Open.
From this definitely a young player to watch out for.
Also well done Richie Ramsay, Matthew Southgate, Justin Rose, and Tommy Fleetwood all finishing in the top 10.
http://www.golfchannel.com/tours/european-tour/2017/dubai-duty-free-irish-open/
Apparently 92534 attended the Irish Open! Jon Rahm drives the ball prodigious lengths! Can be wayward but recovers well! Seve? Good luck to all at the Scottish Open this week.
I watched the final round on Sky , brilliant win and spectacular course with Mussenden temple in the background .A typical dull drisley day on the north coast looks a lot better on HD TV than real life ! ! Pity Rory didn't do well.
Yes dull and wet it was on Sunday, unlike Saturday which was sunny and sparkling, but there was virtually no wind the whole time which made the difference. Portstewart is brutal 95% of the time, believe me!! Disappointing Rory couldn't make the cut and surprising G Mac didn't either as he was reared around here! But Rahm was amazing.
Can Jon Rahm go better than Seve at Birkdale?

Ive just watched the final few minutes of that win, hard to beat links golf, what a low score from Rahm.
I grew up in the North West, but not playing the game, never appreciated how good the local courses were. Ill be at the Open Portrush in a couple of years time though, unmissable chance .
At least the Open in Portrush (2019) will not clash with Wimbledon!
Watched the highlights of the Scottish Open last night. Brutal weather yesterday. Sort of weather we are accustomed to here too, though lovely today. Good to see Poulter up there along with Shinkwin and Sullivan and I'm keeping a close eye on who qualifies for Birkdale. I hope G Mac can manage that today.
Exciting finish at the Dundonald links in Troon. Sadly G Mac didn't qualify for the Open.
Looking forward to seeing the highlights after the Wimbledon highlights.
I only managed to see about 15 minutes of it but enough to see Rickie Fowler give his white gloves to a wee boy standing in the gallery. I think this is really nice. Hope the boy will now be inspired to take up golf and become a champion. :)

Pretty much my plan too karanga.
I saw the little boy...he looked totally befuddled to me! Think he was still hurting after Fowler's ball had struck him and he couldn't quite take it all in!
Thanks Pat, for that info. :) I just saw the tail end of the little boy incident. Sorry to hear Rickie hit him with a ball. Hope the little boy is OK - he must have got a shock.
I missed the highlights of the Scottish Open because of Wimbledon, but The Open starts on Thursday and I'm determined not to miss any of that. Hope it is as exciting as last year and that the Europeans play well.

My liking/support for GMac reduced dramatically as his "fake" US accent strengthens - makes me cringe!

I actually thought he was losing that a bit :)

Yes his accent is a bit weird, but he is a really nice guy. It makes me cringe how everyone mispronounces his surname!! He doesn't mind though. Locally it is pronounced M'Dole!
Another really nice guy is Justin Rose. When in Portstewart at the Irish Open he made my friend's 8 year old granddaughter a very happy bunny when he signed a glove, picked her out, walked over to her and said "Here is someone who would like this!"
Justin is my favourite along with Ernie Els. :) Yes he is a really nice man.
I've liked Justin since he played at the age of 17 in the 1998 Royal Birkdale Open Championship and won the silver medal for the low amateur. I felt sad for him when he missed 21 cuts after he turned professional but he persevered and eventually his career took off with title wins in South Africa. His career has been full of ups and downs but he is more consistent at the moment.
Hmmmm ....... Ernie Els had quite a reputation with the female students at St Andrews when he played there!
I have a golf ball and a baseball hat with Ernie's autograph on them! When he came to Portrush (2019 Open venue) to get some links practice prior to the Open, (can't remember the year, quite a while ago) word got round he was there and we chased round to Portrush as fast as we could and stood like a pack of groupies! He really was very nice. His dad was with him.

My brother is driving one of the courtesy cars for the players at the Open. Will let you know who he gets to drive around.

That's fantastic to have Ernie's autograph. He seems to me a very caring and genuine person. I read his weekly diary in which he shares his views [always positive and optimistic] on how he has played, and always makes a point of praising any South African golfer who has had success as well as acknowledging the support he gets from fans. I'm happy for him to read that he has been shortlisted for the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award presented by ESPN.
This is a very interesting article that shows how he [as well as Phil Mickelson] must have been demoralised by Tiger Woods. I always felt very sad for both of them that despite playing great golf Tiger was just that bit better.

Interesting articles karanga. Thank you. As I don't have Sky (wouldn't have time to sit all day to watch the golf anyway!) I am listening to radio commentary on BBC Radio 5 as I get on with some chores. Guess who is the main/link presenter! Inverdale! Apart from one slip, when he asked us (radio listeners remember!) to "look what happened", I have to say in fairness he's not too bad. At least he is not commentating! He does tend to ask questions in a very roundabout long-winded way! Poor Tommy Fleetwood. I had hoped he would have had a much better start. How damaging pressure can be!
Branden Grace, a former participant in the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation programme, is now tied second on the leaderboard as a result of shooting a round of 62. Well done Branden.
I'm rooting for Richie Ramsay - my son played with him when they were Juniors.
I'm cheering on European Tour players but so far a disappointing Open for them.
It looks as tho Jordan Spieth will win it. He's playing really well.
Pairings and tee times for next week's PGA Championships.

Really interested in the McIlroy, Rahm and Fowler group!
I'm very interested in that pairing as well.
I'm also interested in these pairings
Kuchar, Rose, Snedeker
Matsuyama, Els, Poulter
Walker, Mickelson, Dufner
Fleetwood, Thomas, Reed
Watson, Schwartzel, Casey
Day, Johnson , Stenson
Laird, Haas, McDowell
:yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
Watched some of the golf last night. Thank you BBC! The greens at Quail Hollow are ridiculous! They make such a monkey out of some the players! Just don't see the point of that.
I will try and see some of the PGA Championship tonight.
http://www.pgatour.com/competition/2017/pga-championship/leaderboard.html
My favoured pairings after the first round are
McIlroy, Rahm and Fowler
Watson, Schwartzel [hope he will be inspired by the performances of the South African athletes in London - 3rd in the medal table] and Kirk
Day, Dustin Johnson and Stenson
Golf disappointing as far as the Brits are concerned! Paul Casey, 7 shots adrift of the leader, is the closest. Really disappointed with Rahm and Rory. And poor old Jason Day really scuppered his chances with an 8 at the last hole yesterday. It's a bummer of a course.
The golf is boiling up nicely now to an exciting climax. Very packed at the top. Keeping an eye on it as I watch Fed and Sascha.
I didn't see any of this but congratulations to Justin Thomas on winning the USPGA Chamionship
Well done to Oosthuizen, F Molinari, Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar and Jason Day all finishing in the top 10.
Another disappointing major for Rory McIlroy. Perhaps the best thing he can do is to take the rest of the season off and sort his injuries and his game out.

-8 Thomas
-6 Louis Oosthuizen, Reed, F Molinari;

+1 McIlroy, Poulter;
+2 Spieth;

After a mundane and dull few days the golf did bubble up to an exciting finish. Any one of 10 or so players was in with a chance pretty much right to the end. Was able to give it my full attention after the tennis finished!
Well said Jimmy. Seve was a great golfer with a charismatic personality. He was the golfer responsible for my becoming interested in golf. He will never be forgotten. Nor will the other great golfer, Jack Nicklaus, Jimmy mentions.

Justin Rose continued his good form as a final hole birdie saw him win the Turkish Airlines Open to make it back to back wins. Justin shot a magnificent birdie filled 65 on Sunday to hold off Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium and South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli on 18-under par.
Justin now has a Rolex Series win to add to the 2013 US Open and two World Golf Championships, the latest of which came last week, having previously not recorded a victory since his Olympic gold in Rio last summer.

Tiger Woods plans on bidding for a fourth Claret Jug success at Carnoustie Links in 2018 after his comeback at The Hero World Challenge this week.

Looks as tho Tiger might be on the comeback trail.
Tiger is one shot off the lead going into the final round of the Valspar Championship in Florida after a four-under-par 67.
The 14-time major winner is on eight under, one behind Canadian Corey Conners, who carded a three-under 68.
Woods, who last won in August 2013, is joint second with England's Justin Rose and fellow American Brandt Snedeker.
Rose's five-under 66 was the joint second lowest round of the day and moved him up five places from seventh.

Rory McIlroy missed the cut.
Congratulations to Paul Casey, a surprise winner of the Valspar Championship in Tamp Bay. :bravo: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :trophy: :GBflag:

Casey understood all the focus was on the resurrection man in the red shirt, yet after his Sunday magnificence for a 10-under total he was unashamedly in ecstasy in Tampa Bay.
“Sorry, Tiger, but I’ve been waiting for this for so long,” Casey said. “It’s very rewarding to have a good putting Sunday. It’s the thing that’s been holding me back and the frustrating thing for a couple of years.”
Rory McIlroy back to winning ways. He had a storming round today to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Well done Rory! Justin Rose finished third.
Great news. Congratulations to Rory winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Happy for him and hope that this is a return to his best form especially with the Masters now far away now. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :trophy:
Well done Justin finishing third and Henrik Stenson 4th.

On the Houston leaderboard on Friday Ian Poulter was 123rd, but after three rounds under 20 under he forced a play off with a brilliant 20 yard birdie at the final regulation hole. He then beat Hossler at the first extra hole to claim his first Tour victory since November 2012. He also secured a place in this week's Masters.
As well as this he moved back into the world's top 30 having fallen to #207.
Well done Ian. :bravo::trophy: :GBflag:
It was really amazing Poulter won Houston knowing he absolutely had to win to qualify for the Masters. That must be the hardest thing to achieve.
It was really amazing Poulter won Houston knowing he absolutely had to win to qualify for the Masters. That must be the hardest thing to achieve.
Yes it was amazing but no surprise really when one remembers Ian Poulter's part in the 'miracle at Medinah' in the Ryder Cup when all seemed lost for Team Europe.
“The journey continues,” Poulter said. “I’ve had 19 good years on tour and I guess I’ve got another couple coming. So there’s life in the old dog yet.”
There is also life left in the old putter. Telegraph Sport revealed two weeks ago that Poulter had dug out the flat-stick which inspired Europe’s dramatic fightback at the “Miracle of Medinah” Ryder Cup six years ago. For all that time the missing piece in his comeback was gathering dust in a bag in the corner of his office. “It’s not going anywhere now,” Poulter said.
José Mar*a Olazábal, the Spaniard who was the captain in 2012, welcomed that news. “It’s good to see the magic putter back in use,” Olazábal said.

Best of luck to Justin who is four shots off the lead in the Memorial Tournament. Should he win he will become the World #1. :yahoo:
Brooks Koepka won the US Open Championship 1 over par and Tommy Fleetwood was the runner up 2 over par.
Congratulatons to Brooks.

Shame Fleetwood missed that last put but he did well. Was really hoping Koepa would drop some shots, but congratulations to him. Two back to back US Opens.
I was hoping that too that Brooks would miss some shots but he played well and deserved his win. I'm really glad Patrick Reed did not win his second major of the year - he is my least favourite US golfer!!!
I was cheering on Tommy who played some brilliant golf in the final round. It's a real shame he didn't play well on the other days as he would surely have won the title.
Hope for home success in The Open. :yahoo:
Really nice article about Tommy

Great to see Phil Mickelson will be playing.
The five-time major winner will be making his 15th appearance in the event, having claimed the title in a play-off at Castle Stuart before winning the Open Championship at Muirfield a week later.

The way this Wimbledon is panning out unless there are major shocks by the time the first round tees off I will have lost interest in it and be glad to follow this instead. :shades:
Congrats to Scotland's Russell Knox who won the Irish Open at Ballyliffin today. He holed a monster putt to win the playoff.

No! I was at Wimbledon! Was travelling home at the weekend.
Tommy Fleetwood got paid more than $150,000 in prize money from last month’s Open. It was not paid, however, to the Tommy Fleetwood who played in the championship and finished equal 12th at Carnoustie.
Instead, it was sent to a 58-year-old man by the same name who caddies at the Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Florida.

And fingers crossed for Justin Rose who is currently involved in a play-off with Keegan Bradley at the BMW championships. I think this will make him #1....he will def be #1 if he wins this play-off.
Edit: Justin lost the play-off! But congrats to him. A very good performance.
And as far as I can make out, he will be the new world #1! Huge congrats to Justin. Team Europe will be fielding the world #1 in the upcoming Ryder Cup. Cool.
Thanks Pat. Yes he is the new World #1.:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :GBflag: I am so happy for Justin who I have followed since he finished 4th in the Open as an amateur. He is not only a great golfer but a great person.
Justin Rose is the new World No 1 despite losing a play-off to Keegan Bradley at the rain-extended BMW Championship last night after knocking Dustin Johnson off the top of the rankings.

His Dad will be so proud looking down on his son.
By ascending to the top of the world rankings, Justin Rose has established himself as the lead character in Europe's team-room for this month's Ryder Cup.
Furthermore, he has added one of golf's rarest and most meaningful achievements to a career resume that includes a US Open, nine PGA Tour wins among 22 professional victories and an Olympic gold medal.

More congratulations to Justin Rose for winning the $10m FdEx Cup.
And also to Tiger for winning the Tour Championship. A lot of people understandably don't like him because of some unsavoury moments in his private life but surely his return after major surgery can only help to inspire Andy to keep fighting.
Congrats Justin. Happy enough for Tiger but what really gets on my goat is the never-ending press coverage (adulation) which goes on and on ad nauseum to the exclusion of other players who are often as deserving. It happens in tennis too, I know! No prizes for guessing!
Of course the hype about Tiger Woods is never ending but huge congratulations are due to Justin Rose who pipped him to secure the season long FedEx Cup ahead of Tiger Woods and by so doing pocketed $10m,
I really hope the upcoming Ryder Cup is about golf and not Tiger Woods.
Well done Justin :bravo::GBflag::trophy:

Really surprised to hear about Justin as all I have seen on the news is Tiger! Didn't know anyone else won anything.
The Ryder Cup has been pretty compulsive viewing over the last two days. Europe are doing brilliantly - leading the much vaunted American team by 10 points to 6 going into the last day. :bravo: Of course, it could all change tomorrow but so far, so good - go Europe!!!
I agree it is really exciting to watch and the coverage by Sky is excellent.
Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari are the stars of the show.
Difficult task ahead of Europe as we've been here before when Team America comes back to totally dominate the singles. Hope the Europeans keep the momentum going.
Surprising poor form shown by American stars especially Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed and the much praised Tiger Woods after winning the Tour Championship a week ago.
The crowd support is really amazing.
Come on Team Europe and the best of luck to them all tomorrow.
Fleetwood and Molinari have been brilliant so far - winning all four of their matches - something never achieved by a European pairing before. After all the hype surrounding Woods, it was quite refreshing to see Tommy and Franco beat Tiger and his partner three times out of three!

Absolutely - five wins out of five - well done, Franco Molinari :clap::clap: ................. and Sergio, as a wild card, records the most ever wins for a European in Ryder Cup history! :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: So much for Tiger Woods, who was to be the star of the show according to the media and played four and lost four! The real difference was that Europe played as a team and the USA quite simply didn't. Well done the underdogs, well done, Europe!!!!:dance::dance:

Last time out is the only time I can remember real team spirit in the USA team, but this time they went back to being 12 "stars" rather than 1 team.
Take nothing away from Europe, to a man they played brilliantly, I really had doubts this year but happy to be proven wrong!
Congratulations to Captain Thomas Bjorn and Team Europe. A really great achievement considering that on paper Team USA should really have thumped Team Europe. About half way through it really looked as tho Team USA were coming back but I missed the bit where Europe came back at them. Will watch the highlights.
Really great sporting event - great golf, great sportsmanship shown by both teams, great team spirit, and perhaps more important great respect for not only their colleagues but the members of Team USA.
A very memorable Ryder Cup. Special well done to Francesco Morinari 5 wins out of 5 and Sergio Garcia become Team Europe's highest ever point scorer.

Francesco Molinari is my choice for the overseas sports personality of the year. I hope he gets recognised for all the great golf he has played this year. He has a great personality - not only a great golfer but an unassuming humble champion.

He would be a very deserving winner of the overseas personality. What a competition the Ryder Cup was
If we were making a list of 100 potential newsmakers at the start of the year, Francesco Molinari may not have made the cut. Heck, the same straw poll taken in early May would have turned up nary an Italian mention.
But after laying waste to the competition on both sides of the Atlantic for a summer and capping it with a Ryder Cup to remember, Molinari comes in at No. 10 on our list of the biggest newsmakers of 2018.
https://www.golfchannel.com/news/newsmaker-year-no-10-francesco-molinari
GolfChannel.com’s No. 7 newsmaker is all about the depth exhibited in both the men’s and women’s games this year.
In fact, it may be historic.
We saw that in all the battles waged for the No. 1 world ranking this year, in the musical chair nature of that struggle.
The top ranking exchanged hands nine times in the men’s game. That’s more times than any year in the history of the Official World Golf Ranking, since it was initiated in 1986.
The ranking changed hands seven times over the last three months, with the possibility for continuing change in the immediate future as just .01 average world-ranking points separate No. 1 Brooks Koepka from No. 2 Justin Rose (as of the publishing of this story).

Great start to 2019 by World number one Justin Rose who held off the challenge of Adam Scott to win the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines by two shots from the Australian
The Englishman had three bogeys in his opening five holes but played the last 12 in five under to card a three-under 69 and win on 21 under.
Scott birdied the last four holes to shoot a 68 and finish second.

Law birdied the 16th and sank an eight-foot putt on the par-five last to card a six-under 66 and win on 18 under.

The course is beautiful and obviously made with fans in mind. Very easy to walk and see the golf.

Glad you enjoyed your experience at TPC Sawgrass. And I'm even more happy with the result! Well done Rory! So pleased he is on the winner's rostrum again. Preparations are well underway here for The Open in July. The course is looking magnificent, as always, and Portrush is having a bit of a makeover. Would be so nice if Rory could win here! But first it's the Masters! Go get it Rory!
I didn't want Rory but that's ok, still a Brit.
That is great Pat. I looked at that, as will be in UK in the summer but it's the same weekend that my son is getting married, so don't think that will work.

I live here, Sally! Royal Portrush only 5 minutes down the road from me, and I happened to be passing last Sunday, so I stopped to take a few pics. Luckily I was travelling in the right direction as there was a 4 mile queue of traffic going the other way! Clearly everyone was out curious to see what was happening! Not up to facing the traffic during The Open so will watch most of it on TV!
:shamed: Sally, I've just realised you were replying to Big Al! Sorry. Thought it was me at first! Read the question, Pat!

Are you planning to come to the Open? I might go to one of the practice days.
Why is this the one weekend we can't go!!! My son is getting married, so priorities win. If this was the following weekend we could have killed two birds with one stone, a visit to Ireland and The Open. Oh well, another time maybe.

If you are driving from the Belfast direction, you could use the park and ride facility at Coleraine Rugby Club. It's situated more or less as you arrive in Coleraine (Lodge Road roundabout) and when you are returning home again, you should be able to avoid most of the traffic.
I will now be attending the tournament on Friday.

Had a great day at The Open. Very dramatic (and ultimately heartbreaking) watching Rory trying to make the cut.To come so close!! But there are plenty other 'locals' in there with a chance: Lowry, Fleetwood, Westwood, Rose. I would be delighted to see any of them lift the claret jug. This whole area is buzzing this week. Today was sensational! More like the Ryder Cup than The Open! As you say Sally, it will be nail-biting tomorrow with the weather likely to play it's part in the proceedings.

Seems they are aware of the bad weather looming and are starting play early tomorrow at 07.32am!
Leaders out at 13.47pm.

I was at a wedding all day today and had to peek at my phone under tables (I wasn't the only one but have to say I was the only female)
Great results so far, hoping for good things tomorrow :) on Stena at moment on way to Lakes so might still be sleeping when it is all over!
Enjoy it all Pat especially the buzz :yahoo::cheers:
Fantastic days golf ,and I hope they all get a good nights sleep, esp. Shane !
Most spectacular scenery for any Open championship, said Tom Watson and I agree.

I agree too! (But then I am biased!;))
Monsoon conditions here! I don't know how they manage to play golf in this. We play in loads of wind all the time, (cos we have no option: it's always windy!) but we would draw the line at these conditions!
What an amazing Open! So happy for Shane. And for Tommy too. I hope his turn to win will come in 2020 at a major.
Shane wins !! that eases the disappointment of Rory's early exit . He's such a natural player esp on the links .
Droves of Irish fans there today , I wonder how they all got tickets, they were supposed to be sold out long ago!
Sad that that's the last major of the year .

Over the moon for Shane Lowry! What a fantastic 4 days of golf he had, kept his nerve on the last day and won clear of the field chasing him in front of an ecstatic Irish crowd. Fabulous for the whole island of Ireland and put Portrush right on the map!
I felt for Tommy Fleetwood who kept edging closer then losing the gains he'd made. But that is golf ... Good to see Westwood playing better, Justin Rose faded a bit at the end. All in all a lot of lovely golf to watch.
I stopped playing 10 years ago (rubbish handicap of 45 ...) when my first knee needed replacing but am very tempted to see if I can still hit a golf ball. Stand by the local driving range - my one-eyed aim isn't very true!
Congrats Europe girls! Won the last 3 matches and pinched the Solheim Cup! Exciting finish. Well done them!
Quite, quite incredible! Europe looked dead and buried pretty much right up until the last 5 minutes.
So exciting - absolutely brilliant - well done the girls!!!:yahoo::jitterbug:
Rory McIlroy will lead golf's return after a two-month hiatus in a televised charity match in Florida next week.
The world number one will play with Dustin Johnson against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Woolfe in a $4m skins game on 17 May in aid of Covid-19 charities.
With the backing of the PGA Tour this will be seen as a first tentative step since the coronavirus lockdown.
There has been no professional golf since the Players Championship was abandoned after one round on 12 March.

Lee Westwood has been named 2020 European Tour Golfer of the Year. :bravo:
It is the fourth time the 47-year-old Englishman has won the award.
Westwood began the year with victory at the Abu Dhabi Championship in January, and ended it by winning the Race to Dubai after finishing runner-up to Matt Fitzpatrick in the DP World Tour Championship this month.

Apparently, Woods is “In moderate to critical condition” according to a medical statement, has suffered "multiple leg injuries" and is currently in surgery.
