Well done Rory McIlroy for winning the Shanghai Masters (and $1.25m) after a shoot out with Anthony Kim.
He was cheered on by Caroline Wozniaki who lost no time legging it from her losses in Istanbul to go and cheer on her boyfriend.

The golf clubs with WozzIlroy on are just (http://thetennistimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/rory_mcilroy_gives_catherine_wozniacki_a_distincti ve_golf_club.jpg) a tad cheesy though ...

Meanwhile, in Andalucia, Sergio Garcia took a leaf out (http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/10/30/article-2055354-0E99B82E00000578-562_468x286.jpg) of Rafa Nadal's book by testing the toughness of his winners trophy!
The Spaniards 2nd win in succession puts him in contention for the Ryder Cup team.

Congratulations to Diane and Luke on the birth of their second daughter. :swingin:

Luke Donald's wife gave birth to a girl Friday morning in the north suburbs of Chicago, and both are said to be doing well. Sophia Ann Donald was born at 2:11 a.m. CST. Donald has another daughter, Elle, who was born last year.

He couldn't help but notice that the year he went to No. 1 in the world, his second daughter was born on 11-11-11.

The No 1 has been gd 2 me, no more than 2day,'' Donald said on Twitter.

Donald, poised to become the first player in history to win the money title on the PGA Tour and European Tour in the same year, next plays the Nedbank Challenge in South Africa on Dec. 1-4 before ending the European Tour season in the Dubai World Championship.

Jack Nicklaus reckons that come the year 2022, China might have five of the world's top 10 golfers.

It is a staggering thought. At the moment there is not one in the top 250. Their number one Liang Wen-chong stands 252nd and their number two Zhang Xin-jun 622nd.

But Nicklaus believes that golf becoming an Olympic sport again in four years' time has the potential to change the sport dramatically and rapidly.

match play is always fun.

anything can happen over 18 holes. luke going out today means westwood or mcilroy can go no.1 if they win the tourny.

Well done Ernie but commiserations to Luke.

I've been following Manassero's progress with interest since he won the Silver Medal at the British Open in 2009. Think he is a potential star of the future.

He will be 19 in April but already has notched up some notable achievements.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matteo_Manassero

I don't know much about Ishikawa except that he is predicted to be one of the stars of golf along with Rory and has had some success in Japan.

^Yes, Ishikawa plays predominantly on the Japan tour but I remember he was the youngest ever winner of a professional golf event at 15. He's a big star in Japan already but not very well known this side of the world.

All the Brits have messed up their chances of winning the Masters a few after promising starts - typical. Can't see Lee and Paul making up ground in the final round with some good players ahead of them.

Sir Nick Faldo was the last Brit to win it in 1996 - he also won back to back titles in 1989 and 1990.

08-04-2012, 19:46
Wow. One hole by Mickelson and one by Oosthuizen has resulted in a six shot swing (-3 albatross never done before at the second and double bogey - first time ever by Mickelson at the Master's!).

PS Anyone within six shots of the leader could shoot six under in the last nine, so I still would not be ruling out anybody at this stage!

Wentworth, BMW PGA Championship
Rory out of Wentworth but a Brit is in the lead by 4 shots.

Rory McIlroy missed his second straight cut after a woeful two days at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The world number one carded rounds of 74, 79 to end nine over, three weeks before his US Open title defence.

England's James Morrison raced into the lead at 12 under with a stunning 64.

Defending champion Luke Donald, who can overtake McIlroy in the rankings with a top-eight finish, and Scotland's David Drysdale were four back in second, while Lee Westwood was one over.

Ireland's Peter Lawrie, the co-first-round leader with Drysdale, shot 71 for seven under alongside Spain's Alvaro Quiros (70), while England's Justin Rose ended in a large group at six under after a round of 71.

Open champion Darren Clarke has yet to make a halfway cut this season. He shot a second-round 77, coming home in a six over par 43 after being comfortably on course to make it through to the weekend.

Stunner of a shot from Rory just then to go tee to green on the 16th, just putted short but it's still a birdie 3 and makes up for the previous hole! Hit a howler of a tee shot on 15th - into the crowd, hit a spectator on the head and landed out of bounds. That cost him bogey.

-4: Snedeker (US)
-3 : Els (RSA), B Watson (US), McDowell (NI), Woods (US), Muto (Jpn) McIlroy (NI), Stricker (US), Hanson (Swe)

Adam Scott equalled the Royal Lytham & St Annes course record for an Open Championship with a 64 to lead after Thursday's first round. The Australian, who was 32 on Monday, set the early pace at six under in perfect scoring conditions on Thursday morning and stayed in front by one shot from Scotland's 1999 champion Paul Lawrie, former Masters winner Zach Johnson and Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts.

England's world number one Luke Donald shot level-par 70, as did Ireland's two-time champion Padraig Harrington.
But third-ranked Lee Westwood struggled with his game despite playing in the best of the weather early on and carded a three-over 73 after starting with two birdies. Phil Mickelson, who was runner-up last year, also took 73.

Defending champion Darren Clarke compiled a six-over 76 and said he was "disgusted with himself".

Consolation for Bristol boy hit by golf ball from BBC Bristol news (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-18922148):

Rory McIlroy has signed a glove for a Bristol teenager who was struck on the head by a ball the golfer had hit. Jason Blue, 16, received first aid treatment after the accident beside the 15th fairway at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes. The world's number two golfer apologised before giving him a signed glove with the word "sorry" on it.

The teenager was taken to a first aid point just behind the 15th fairway, where he was standing when he was hit – after the Northern Irish star had come over to apologise and given him an autographed glove. He was then moved to the main medical HQ at the course where he was seen by a doctor. Jason was allowed to leave and sent home in a courtesy car after about 45 minutes, having been given something to eat and drink. He had a bruise on his head but no stitches and left the course without a bandage or dressing.

Rory McIlroy paid for the guy he hit on the head & his mate to stay in a hotel instead of their tent last night, plus £100ish for dinner. @RobHodgetts (http://twitter.com/RobHodgetts) 14 minutes ago
McIlroy: 'It was the least I could do. If someone gave me a huge gash in my head I wouldn't be happy.' Asked if he had ever camped: 'No'. @RobHodgetts (http://twitter.com/RobHodgetts) 13 minutes ago

OPEN SECOND-ROUND LEADERBOARD

-10: Snedeker (US)
-9: Scott (Aus)
-6: Woods (US)
-5: Olessen (Den)
Selected others:
-4 Lawrie (Sco) McDowell (NI), -2 Donald (Eng),
Par Poulter (Eng),
+2 McIlroy (NI), +3 Westwood (Eng)

Brandt Snedeker matched the lowest 36-hole total in Open history to take a one-shot lead at the halfway stage at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

The American added a 64 to his opening 66 for 10 under to edge past first-round leader Adam Scott (67) with Tiger Woods (67) four back after chipping in at the last.
Snedeker emulated Scott from day one as he tied the course record for an Open at Lytham and has yet to drop a shot or find one of the 206 bunkers this week.

From the BBC Golf page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/golf/18940877)

Adam Scott will take a four-shot lead over Graeme McDowell and Brandt Snedeker into the final round of the 141st Open championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes. The 32-year-old Australian, who is chasing his first major title, fired a two-under 68 to build a decent cushion at 11 under par with strong winds forecast for Sunday afternoon.
Northern Ireland's McDowell, the 2010 US Open champion, climbed to seven under with a 67 and was joined by America's second-round leader Snedeker, who holed a big putt across the 18th for a 73.
Tiger Woods is one shot further adrift as he tries to win a 15th major and first since the 2008 US Open.
The 36-year-old, who won the last of his three Open titles in 2006, had to fight hard for his level-par 70 after dropping two shots in his first three holes. Woods has never won a major tournament when trailing going into the final day.

Wonder who'll win???

Scott isn't a good front runner, I think he may collapse somewhat under the pressure. Opening the door for Tiger or even McDowell perhaps.

Sorry, but for me it's anyone but Tiger - I feel the same way about him as I do about Fed. I do hope Scott doesn't blow up - he's played so well so far and it's good to see somebody new taking a major. Interesting that he and Anna Ivanovic both seem to be doing well since their break-up - maybe there's a message there for Rory and Caroline!!

US PGA SECOND-ROUND LEADERBOARD

-1: Baddeley (Aus), Scott (Aus), Adams (US), Immelman (SA), Hanson (Swe)

Tiger Woods is in a three-way share of the lead on four under at the halfway stage of a windy US PGA Championship.
The American battled wild conditions at Kiawah Island to fire a one-under 71 and top the leaderboard with Sweden's Carl Pettersson and Fiji's Vijay Singh.

England's Ian Poulter (71) is one shot off the lead, while Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy (75) and Jamie Donaldson of Wales (73) are two back. World number one Luke Donald (76) made the cut but Lee Westwood missed out.

McIlroy joint leader halfway through Day 3 of the USPGA.

US PGA THIRD ROUND LEADERBOARD (Play suspended and will resume Sunday)

-6: Singh (Fij), McIlory (NI)
-5: Scott (Aus)
-4: Pettersson (Swe)
-3: Van Pelt (US), Immelman (SA)
-2 : Stricker (US), Hanson (Swe), McDowell (NI), Poulter (Eng)

Rory McIlroy went joint top of the leaderboard before play was suspended during round three of the US PGA Championship because of a thunderstorm. The Northern Irishman hit five birdies in eight holes before a bogey on the ninth left him tied with co-overnight leader Vijay Singh on six under.

Joint overnight leader Tiger Woods had a terrible time, finishing on one under after three bogeys in just seven holes. Woods's poor start to his round saw him tumble down the leaderboard to a tie for 11th after he went into the third day leading on four under alongside Fiji's Singh and Sweden's Carl Pettersson.

The third round resumed at 12:45 BST on Sunday at Kiawah Island.

That must be mighty tricky at times when following sport ...

I don't mind Tiger when he's playing golf; the guy has a talent that is incredible. (just as Federer has IMHO).
I don't like him off court for various reasons (and Federer for different reasons). 2 guys who are sporting stars and legends already because they are so good at what they do but are somewhat flawed in their behaviour off 'court' and off 'green'.

Westwood has been the real disappointment this week - just not on form at all. Only Colsaerts and Poulter on the Europe side have looked consistently at their best over the last 2 days.

Watched the last few holes from yesterday this morning.....my blood pressure can't stand it! Way to go Poults!

Mr P reckons (sorry if this has already been said) that the course is set up to favour the USA - long straight holes for the long hitters (which conversely hasn't favoured Tiger at all so far), if you do miss the fairway then the wayward shots have an easly lie, there's virtually no rough, the bunkers are not much of a challenge (on Mr P's course you can't see someone once they're in the bunker!) and so it's down to the driver and the wedge. I can sort of see that but our guys are used to playing in the US and as top golfers have to play what's in front of them (a bit like Andy on court).

I did get frustrated though at the number of putts that went round the hole and back out for the Europeans where the US could sink everything. Began to wonder if there was a little mole under the holes with it's snout sticking up ready to divert the Euro putts

Mr P is a statistician and reckons we have very little chance of winning today. However, as a non-statistician, am I not right in thinking each match has a 50/50 chance? Haven't yet studied the pairings mind.

Can't stand Tiger - feel his game has gone completely off since his "misdemeanours" were found out and it couldn't happen to a nicer bloke so far as I'm concerned. If he never recovers form it's a small price to pay..........sorry just me being twitter and bisted!

where you not supporting the Europeans in the team? ;)
as for tiger i cant help but like him, i was working/playing at a very well to do golf course in surrey when tiger first came to prominence and the things that where said about the bloke used to make my blood boil. cant help but think if he was white middle class his extra curricula activities would soon be forgot

I couldn't care less what colour he is and hadn't given it a thought. I'm afraid extra curricular activities makes it sound minor. An affair is one thing (and bad enough in my book) but prostitutes and putting your wife's health in danger is something else entirely IMHO. How unfeeling could a man be?

When Woods first came on the scene I fully supported him - he was a fantastic talent and I thought a great role model especially for young black Americans. However, as time has gone on, his on-course conduct and his self-confessed litany of misdemeanours off-course mean there is absolutely no way I could continue to support him and it has absolutely nothing to do with his race. As far as HRH is concerned - although I don't condone it, I don't think having a long term affair with one woman in anyway equates to what Woods has done. Perhaps there is a difference in male and female perspective here?

Crikey! This is really going to the wire isn't it?

Europe snagged 5 wins and are on 11; the USA got 2 and are on 12.
5 matches out on the course; Europe are up in 2 and USA up in 3.

But anything could change - and since this is 'for Seve' I'd really love to see Garcia start motoring and get a point.

Oooh! Garcia has gone all square. Can he take Furyk out on the 18th???

There's a brilliant review of the Ryder Cup written by Tom Fordyce on the BBC website here. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/golf/19782304)

Here's a few extracts:-

And so, after a sporting summer that has defied belief, the final miracle came to pass.

Europe's 14½-13½ victory (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/golf/19780678) over a stupefied United States team in golden Sunday sunshine at Medinah was many things - a nerve-mangling epic, an unprecedented comeback and a criminal collapse, golfing larceny on the grandest scale.
It was also, in a year when the extraordinary became commonplace, perhaps the most remarkable afternoon of all.

So how did it happen? How did the day that at one point had them 25-1 for the win end with Luke Donald spraying champagne all over a cavorting army of overseas support, with captain Jose Maria Olazabal blubbing tears of joy, with the "U-S-As" overwhelmed by "oles" and Ian Poulter conducting it all with half-cut glee?

It began as it surely had to - with Olazabal's first few singles selections all taking the lead early, silencing the boisterous home galleries for the first time and applying pressure to their rivals.

It then continued as it had not before - with European putts dropping like the autumn leaves all around, with American efforts skidding past and stopping short. For the first time, mixed in with the cigar smoke and smell of beer and barbecue drifting across the course, there was something else: doubt, and then escalating anxiety.

So that was our summer of 2012. An Englishman won the Tour de France. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/18946960) A Scot won the US Open. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/19539257) In between, Britons won gold after gold (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19238084) at a home Olympics and won even more in the Paralympics that followed.

Watching these Europeans celebrate at the end of it - Poulter swirling a union flag over his head, Nicolas Colsaerts sparking up consecutive cigarettes, McIlroy staggering under the weight of a champagne bottle the size of his legs, all of it under a perfect blue sky, songs ringing out across the lawns - there could only be happiness at its final passing.

pabbers
01-10-2012, 12:52
Must go watch Woods/Molinari's finish - went to bed before that - couldn't believe it when I woke up to find Molinari had halved the final hole! Perfection, as I did feel a bit sheepish about us winning with a draw and the US on the other hand having to make 14.5 to win it. So this is VERY satisfying.

01-10-2016, 23:31

pabbers
02-10-2016, 10:11
Let's hope Reed's lights out golf has been extinguished after yesterday. I don't like him either. He has an arrogance that is irritating even though he played better than Spieth. I think a while back he said he considered himself to be a top 5 player even though he was well outside that.
Crumbs hadn't realised Westwood and Kaymer were coming out again. By all accounts we need some early blue on the board so putting those 2 out first might not be the best idea especially if Reed is out early.

AllyB
02-10-2016, 10:30
My thoughts were that Reed is almost a definite point against anybody the way he is playing so we might as well sacrifice Lee or Martin as I think theyll struggle whoever they play. I'd love to be proved wrong though

I agree Pieters has played a blinder and the Spanish rookie has done well too. I feel sorry for Fitzpatrick - only out once and suffered a loss, I really hope he pulls off a win today. God knows what Clarke was thinking about picking Westwood and Kaymer - cronyism at its worst I'm afraid.

Most impressive about Pieters is how he survived being partnered with woeful Westwood on the first morning to go on and play like he has. Rory said that playing with Thomas had never been discussed (let alone having practised together) before the Friday afternoon pairings had been announced. Makes you wonder what Clark and his entourage of vices talk about.
