Good shout! The two matches on centre are potentially more deserving. If Federer and Anderson want to prove everyone wrong with a nail biting 5 setter then all the better.
I don't think I actually believed this was going 5 when I wrote it!

Go Kev, following you on livescores while I watch Andy (err sorry, Delpo & Rafa ;))
Stu Fraser on Twitter: "A well-researched Andy Murray reeling off the stats again during commentary says that Rafael Nadal is the all-time no.1 in terms of points won on the second serve.
He's right."
Crunch time as Federer leads 5-4*.
Now 7-6*, who will blink first?

Even in Fed wins this, got to wonder what a long 5 setter will have taken out of him for the semi

This 5th set is amazing. Who needs football?
We are being treated to the best QF's in a while. Stunning. During the last change over I took a wee peep into #1 court and pity for Milos and John that the stadium is very empty. I'm sure their QF is good.....just so much else going on!
Possibly decisive breaks for Rafa and Isner at exactly the same time.

Long game but Nadal holds for 4-2 after saving bps ad same in marathon game for 5-3, tough for Delpo now.
Isner beats Milos:crying:
More BPs squandered by DelPo.
Sad for Milos. Really hoped he'd win through. :wimcry:
Come on Rafa.

What a fabulous match. Delpo will rue that missed volley on BP. Wanted Delpo to win but quite like Rafa so happy to support him now. Andy loved it didn't he - think he would only have enjoyed it more if he had been playing himself. Wonder if Andy will come back for the semis & final?
I think I heard Andy say he has a wedding to attend and then it's off state side for him so he is probably not available for weekend commentary more's the pity.
Really enjoyed Andy's commentary - well done

Soooooooooooooo disappointed that England and Milos both lost yesterday. But happy that Rafa won and Fed lost. However, I don't think Rafa will get by Djokovic, more's the pity and I reckon John Isner could win the whole thing. We will see. It would be nice to have a new champ but I'd rather it go to Anderson than Isner.
I enjoyed listening to Andy. Unfortunately, my stream slowed down as the match went on and I was unable to see/hear the last 3 sets. Hoping for Rafa/Anderson but unfortunately think Djoko/Isner.
Hmmmm - not sure about the outcome of the Anderson/Isner match. I hope it doesn't become just a servefest and I really hope Anderson emerges as the winner. I definitely think Rafa will beat Djoko though. Djoko's not back to his best yet and is easily rattled.

Agree on both points - I doubt there will be many rallies in the Anderson/Isner match but hope Kev wins it (will be forever thankful to him for knocking out Fed and he is a bit more interesting to watch than Isner). As for Rafa v Djoko - the latter is definitely on his way back but there are still doubts in his mind and I can't see him resisting the iron-will of Rafa.

It's just a whole other viewing mindset. Rafa v Djokovic should be great to watch in terms of strokes and strategy. This is intriguing in a very different sense , who will break through the big serves. Both fascinating contests. To enjoy both you have to be ready for two completely different matches.
I'm surprised, but also very pleased, to see the level Kev is producing and maintaining in the context of the length of his previous match. Am actually enjoying this a lot

Certainly some exciting points even if serve dominated but getting a few interesting exchanges. Sure Nadal/Djokovic will be more entertaining though. Haven't read back so sorry if this has already been said. For those who don't approve of tie breaks determining matches, this is an example of when it really should be used. Whoever wins this is going to struggle on Sunday and so it'll be a non final, unless Rafa and Nole have a marathon too.

Whilst not that keen on TB at 6 all in final set, think there should be one before it goes on as long as this, dramatic as it is. This match must have some effect on winner, particularly if it's Anderson.

Yes senior tennis but...
I watched Jack Draper get to the final of the Juniors. 19-17 in the third. His opponent was crying like a baby at the end. An emotional mess. With Juniors there is a duty of care. Four hours plus for a three set Junior Match is NOT carrying out that duty of care. The ATP and WTA are far more careful about teenagers starting professional tennis careers. Today was perfect proof you cannot have open matches at the Junior Level - serious harm could be caused.

Local bureaucracy - the council will only licence the club to play until 11pm. Something to do with it being in a residential area
WimbledonWestie
13-07-2018, 22:19
Wimbledon is in a very residential area- the curfew is partly to minimise the disruption to them late at night( given they are hugely disrupted over th fortnight) and to prevent fans being trapped in suburbs if matches go beyond the times of public transport.

But the roof is closed , would there be much noise ?
I get the transportation thing , but couldnt they extend the hours of transit during Wimbledon ?
seems so silly to me
WimbledonWestie
13-07-2018, 22:58
It's not the noise from play, it's the noise of 15000 people ( plus those on hill) leaving the grounds. Also ground staff have to work on the grass at end of play then again next day,. So it's to take into account staff working at the grounds who will be there later than spectators regardless and have to get home.
I'm ok with it.... have enjoyed many late matches at Oz open.... but at same time commentators have been wondering how crowd are getting none/ to accommodation. So I like that Wimbledon is considerate that way. I know it's frustrating not to finish a match esp a semi- but it is an unusual occurrence for the semis.

Possibly more to do with the noise created by 15000 people leaving the grounds when it finishes. The vast majority would take the 15 minutes walk back to Southfields tube station which is a route directly through a residential area.

And London transport is not that great. It is already a sea of people walking down that road and a fight to get on the bus home when a big match finishes.
And I've seen late night matches in Oz as mentioned above with half the crowd gone as they need to get home.
What I can't understand is why they will play under the roof tomorrow. Another rule that needs changing. OK to complete a match on same day under roof - but not when it goes on to next day. It is the most beautiful day here and roof will be closed at an outdoor tournament semi-final!

I agree about the roof Josephine. It is really weird that they consider it ok to start a match outdoors and close the roof if required, but not to do it the other way around. The players have to adapt in the first instance, so why can't they in this situation?

I heard they would complete the match indoors unless both players wanted the roof opened, suppose difference in other situation is that they no have no choice whether it's due to weather or light. Think the curfew is more to do with the fact it's a residential area, though transportation an issue. A while since I've been to Wimbledon though and never experienced a late finish. Some underground lines now have night services at weekend but it will be some time before it's rolled out everywhere.
If they start a match outdoors, are forced to move indoor and then don't finish, does it have to remain indoor?
Josephine

The rules are ridiculous. About time Wimbledon reviewed that as well. Why is this the players choice? Andy didn't have a say when they closed the roof in his semi against Jankowic - he was furious. Outdoor tournament - play outdoors when match restarts on a different day. Seems simple to me.

Apparently both players have to agree to have the roof opened today. Djokovic exercised his right to refuse
Boo to Djoko for refusing to have the roof opened (both players have to agree) :grrr:

Should be decision of the tournament if the weather is fine. I don't understand it at all. Why do the players have the choice. Henman just said there is no rule - it's common practice!! About time there was a rule.
JAMES4578

Anyway long first game could well be decisive in this set, Djokovic unable to take chances and now Nadal up 3-0. However Rafa now puts in poor service game and it's 2-3.

so disrespectful of the women's final - I think that should have been the first match, on centre, at 2pm. it's their day and the finalists should not have to hang around waiting for the men to put a shift in and wrap up their semi.
These 2 guys are producing some amazing tennis!

Bit of a pity it ended like that but Djokovic finding a way in the end, bit of a classic and credit to both! Nadal slipping at -0-30 was unfortunate.

Becker saying no real disadvantage for Anderson as both played long matches, however think Djokovic will still be fresher (even if no rest day) and on experience clearly has the edge.
As Andy said, Djok could win it, but it ain't over yet folks. Anderson just might have something to say about that. Agreed that Djok the hot favourite but you just never know. That is the beauty of sport.
Missed all of today's play. Not really sure who I wanted to win, to be honest.
But will be rooting for Anderson tomorrow.

Yep very true it aint over until the fat lady sings.
Nobody would have predicted that Kevin would beat Roger. Apart from perhaps Mats Wilander who if I remember correctly said that the change of court might upset Roger because he was away from his court where he is used to the playing conditions. He thought Kevin would feel happier on the court where he is used to playing.
Vamos Anderson! :swingin:
I must be one of the few that was rooting for Novak today! He's always been my no 2, although way, way behind Andy; think he just wants to be loved and goes about it in a way that makes people cringe. Obviously he will be favourite for tomorrow but won't be too upset if Kevin
upsets the apple cart as he surely deserves his place in the final.

Well I am glad Novak one for several reasons. Firstly it proved Andy right - not saying he will win tournament - but he beat Rafa
Secondly I am tired of the last 6 slams being won by Roger or Rafa - time for a change.
Thirdly I thought we wanted to see a player coming back from a long injury lay off and getting back to the top - gives us more hope for Andy
Finally and with least justification something about Rafa's support box gets on my nerves. And Jelena Djokovic looked so nervous and stressed I wanted it for her.
So well done Novak. Great match and play by both.

And Jelena Djokovic looked so nervous and stressed I wanted it for her.
Wasn't she just. I was stressed out watching her getting stressed out.
While Djoko is in no way a favourite of mine and I am one of the biggest cringers at his "love me, love me" antics he is undisputably one of the great players so it is good to see him back to his best. I hope Andy is inspired by Djoko coming back from injury. Anyone but Fed would have been a satisfactory winner for me- so bored of him winning it. I'll support Anderson but if Djoko wins then well done to him
Well done Nole and Angelique!
Didn't we all moan when they introduced a 5th set TB in DC?
Anyway, Anderson with 2 BPs.
NO!!!
Always been against 5th set tiebreak, but leaning towards a 12-12 one- still creates drama but fairer on winner fir next match- and those waiting to play.
Maybe not have one in a final?
Good idea
I agree. I've always been against tie breaks, but I now see the need for one. In the final set it should come in at 12-12 and be a match tie break to 10.
Yes, the tennis traditionalist in me really likes the fact that Wimbledon have resisted the final set TB, but maybe common sense has to prevail. It should certainly be later in the set, as others have suggested. 12-12 seems to be a good consensus. And I like Linda's idea of making it a longer TB.
It is interesting to note that is only the bigger servers (Isner, Anderson, Mahut) that get into these really long sets, perhaps they should change their style of play?!
With regard to final set TBs at 12-12 as a few have suggested on here, it was interesting to note that both Isner and Anderson, when asked in their post-match pressers about final set TBs, suggested perhaps 12-12 would be a good idea!
Alternatively you could ban all players over 6'6" and you wouldn't have a problem! Or increase the height of the net. Or do away with the second serve.
IF Kev can pull this off today surely he must be the most deserving winner ever? What a passage he has had to get to this point. Interesting listening to Mats Wilander chatting to Celina Hinchcliffe this morning. He was positive for Kev's chances and after chatting to Kev yesterday, Mats described him as 'glowing'. (This was in terms of how he was recovering after the SF).
With regard to the roof being open/closed, apparently Rafa would have wanted it open as the 1pm start would have meant Nole's serve would have been affected by the sun! As Rafa is a lefty, it would not have bothered him!
And all the very best to Jack Draper! I hope he has recovered well to play a good match today.
And I've already got a lump in my throat at the thought that the party is nearly over. I really hate it when it's all over. I love it so much and live for it year upon year. I'm sure I am not alone!
Anyways, going to enjoy today and let the tears flow tomorrow!! There's always Andy to look forward to at the end of this month

What a lovely post Pat. You write so eloquently. I had the privilege of being there on Friday (until end of the 1st set of Rafa v Novak) and again yesterday. I thought Wimbledon was going to be disappointing this year without Andy playing but it ended on a high note and for me will always be the high point of the tennis calendar. When I left Centre Court yesterday I shed a tear or two and kept looking back as I walked up the hill towards Wimbledon station and the ground were out of sight. Looking for an excuse to go back soon although I have been to the Lawn Tennis Museum twice. That's it for live tennis for me until WTF in November as I can't do DC because I have to be around for my ancient mum

Kev's match would have been over mutch faster if one of them had a decent return of serve. I like Kev but dislike his style of play.:sleepy:

Aw thank you themass15. Mind you only one big head around here, Nole's, is more than enough!! I can empathise with your feelings as you left Wimbledon yesterday. I don't mine who wins. I'm just interested to see how this match pans out.

What worries me is that if big servers take over the game we will lose the creativity of the "real" top 4-including Andy & Novak. Pete Sampras put me off tennis for quite a while.

Unfortunately Draper goes down to Tseng 6-4 in 3rd but certainly good effort after marathon semi. Anderson maybe a bit more solid but still making little impression on Djokovic who serves for 2nd at 5-2.
Yes shame for Jack, enjoyable match though, Jack is surely one to follow for the future, I know I will!!... now to switch to Noel .....Come on Kev!!
Jack should be proud. He gave it his all and he is full of personality.

Men’s final been boring most of time so far been watching Jack Draper on TV (move men’s final to my PC). Jack match much more entertaining. He lost but he did so well! Some brilliant play.
Now back focus men’s final. Need decide men’s final or World Cup final on TV and other be on my PC. TV obviously have better quality. If Anderson can’t challenge Nole still then World Cup be on TV and men’s final PC.

Djokovic wins Tb comfortably to take 4th title and clearly was better player today, even if disappointing he was not extended too much (though not really surprised). At least he had classic with Nadal and seems back in big time. Anderson finally got going and had some chances in the 3rd, but probably left it a bit late. A 4th would've been interesting but probably would not have affected the outcome. Time on court was clearly a disadvantage for Kevin, however hopefully can take the positives.
