View Full Version : BASEL 2011, R1: Andy v Robin Haase. Andy withdrew - muscle strain

Andy's on his way to Switzerland today ... and has a R1 match-up against Robin Haase (NED) ahead.
They're 1-1 H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=H756)
Andy lost in R1 in Rotterdam in 2008 but levelled their H2H earlier this year at the US Open.
Not without a mega-battle though - it took him 5 sets to beat Haase in the R64.
Score: 6-7(5), 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4
This R1 match has banana skin potential written all over it.
:sofa:
Haase seems to give Andy a lot of trouble for some reason; mostly because the Dutchman can hit the ball so well WHEN he's having a good day. He's at a career high ranking of #40, having been written off almost with injury woes in 2009/2010, and won his first ever ATP title earlier this year at Kitzbuhel on clay.
However, his Asian campaign was dismal with R1 losses in Shanghai and Tokyo and a R2 loss to Nieminen in Bangkok.
By comparison those 3 weeks for Andy were stellar! 3 titles in 3 weeks - 250/500/Masters - so the Scot's confidence will be running high and he's an opportunity to get off to a good start in Basle if he can post an easy win over the Dutchman.
:)
Play in Basle starts on Sunday 30th October - OOP not yet available.
tough draw for Andy , alot of the guys in his half hes struggled with in the past

Today's matches are all qualifying, the main draw starts tomorrow.
Very tough draw, potentially Haase - Stan - Tipsy - Fed - Nole.
It will be very interesting to see if Andy can keep his very good form going. He will certainly need it for this very tough draw.
All the best Andy hope you can keep your great run going.

Looks as though Andy not playing singles until Wednesday as the programme for centre court for Monday & Tuesday is in the news section of the Basel website http://www.swissindoorsbasel.ch/News.443+M5e4b80e2907.0.html (sorry not sure whether this will work as a link) - I can see it does now!
Presumably Andy & Jamie will play doubles on Tuesday.
I would have predicted Andy playing doubles on Tuesday and singles on Wednesday - giving Fed the maximum amount of rest time between matches.!

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but Sky are showing Basel from Thursday - another reason to hope Andy gets through this encounter (and I believe he will). I remember Andy being interviewed when he was in Shanghai; Marcus asked him if he would be playing Valencia or Basel. Andy smiled and said he would play whichever tournie was shown on Sky. I thought he was joking...

yes, it was till showing Valencia when I checked last night anyway, though would be delighted if they showed at least some of Basel. Obviously a tough opener as Hasse as certainly been awkward for Andy so even if Robin hasn't been in the best form lately he needs to be switched on from the word go. Hopefully Andy can continue the fine form though!
Dont seem to be able to find streams for Basel anywhere. Anybody else found one?

Just checked online and it does indeed say Valencia. On my V+ box TV listings, however, it says coverage of the ATP World Tour 500 in Basel! I suppose Sky's own website is more likely to have it right, but I'm still crossing my fingers!
I see there are some streams for Federer's match this evening

Wednesday's schedule is now up. Andy plays not before 4pm (3pm GMT) tomorrow, with the doubles fourth match on the other court with play starting 1pm (noon). If there are quick matches on Court 2 that could cause some problems!

They'll have to allow him "suitable rest" which is at least an hour...
But you have to wonder WHY they can't put his doubles match on in the latest afternoon slot anyway OR in the 8pm slot.
Daft.

Why do you think that, Linda? On the entry rankings, Fed cannot increase his points this tournament as he won last year so is defending 500. On the Race rankings, Andy is about 2000 points ahead of Fed.
Oh yes! Sorry, I was looking at the rankings from a couple of weeks ago when there were only 45 points between them. :shamed:
(Although I was looking at the normal ATP rankings, not the race - they are still fairly close in the normal rankings, it's only in the race where Andy is so far ahead of Fed.)

Andy is 2015 points ahead of Federer because that's how many points he has won this year (7200), with all previous points deducted already. ie Valencia for Andy and Basel for Roger and all points also been deducted for Paris. Whatever points Federer wins in Basel will be added to his 5185 Even if Federer wins which will earn him 500 points, he still has a long way to catch Andy evin if he wins Paris and andy not playing.. If that's helps.
That's in the race - I was quoting the rankings, where Andy is on 7825 and Fed is on 7530 (my error above was that I had Fed on 7780 as I'd forgotten to take off the 250 for Stockholm).

Anyone know how serious this kind of thing is? All I could find was this report, which in this particular case talked about precautions to avoid a hamstring injury as load would be transferred over to that...
"There are concerns that Horne's glute problem is associated with his protracted battle with hamstring injuries. Waratahs coach Chris Hickey last week ruled out any association between the two injuries, but yesterday confirmed there are now fears they are linked.
Asked if Horne's left hamstring injury could flare up again from the added loading in his strained right glute, Hickey said: ''It can, because if any of those muscles in the hip area are not working properly, one of the other muscles picks up the load. Therefore it could transfer across to that left hamstring.''
There are also worries that Horne's glute strain could extend down to the right hamstring, and that the injury could be a result of overcompensation in the right side for the weakness in his troubled left hamstring. The pelvic region is linked with ''slings'' that impact various muscles in the area.
''On the MRI, it's next to the right hamstring,'' Hickey said of his glute strain. ''The [right] hamstring is OK. It has not been injured, but it's adjacent to it. The concern is that with the glute not working, it puts a load on to the hamstring and that could move from being a glute to a hamstring injury.''

Muscle strains are graded according to their severity:
Grade 1
Stretching with some microtearing of muscle fibers
Recovery—2 weeks
Grade 2
Partial tearing of muscle fibers
Recovery—1-2 months
Grade 3
Complete tearing (rupture) of muscle fibers (This is rare with the gluteal muscles.)
Recovery—more than three months
It can't be very serious if he just did it turning over in bed.

I'm really sorry for Andy having to pull out of Basle (and Jamie too of course!) but from the News reports, posted by Cazza, it seems as though he really did try to play (and hoped he might) Such a shame that the momentum he had in Asia cannot be built on here! I really think Fed has dropped several notches and there was a chance here for Andy to post wins over both Fed and Nole and cement that confidence he's had for a couple of months.
Hum ho. He's in pain so it's best to rest and hope for a good finish to the season at the World Tour Finals on home soil in in 18 days time. If Paris isn't successful I can live with that .....
Glad Chiudinelli took the LL spot after initially losing his promised WC to Andy!

Hi all. I won't be playing this upcoming week the tournament in Paris Bercy. It's been a difficult decision to take but I understand that it is what I need to do right now to prepare well for the end of this season and also for 2012.
