View Full Version : Eastbourne 2018 R2: Andy vs Kyle Edmund - Wednesday not before 4.00 pm
Andy vs Kyle. Not before Wednesday.
I know radio five sports extra will be doing cricket, tomorrow, but I hope they'll also do this match. Carrying on, from yesterday, I don't understand why the BBC couldn't pay some money to whoever has the men's rights at Eastbourne. I know the BBC can't have the rights to every sporting tournament they show and must pay someone else to show it as well.

sadly not that simple - it goes to highest bidder. And Amazon is making lots of money partly by exploiting people who work for them. BBC cannot compete.

Depends on nature of deal,on occasions a few broadcasters have rights. However many deals are exclusive as is the case with Amazon's rights for several ATP events.

Very true that it is not that simple. The contract between Amazon and the tournament may have included an exclusivity clause. I know it's frustrating for people with so many platforms showing tennis but ultimately the rights are sold to the highest bidder - it's a business decision pure and simple. At least on this occasion the free 30 day Amazon trial is an option.

Me too HoopGirl ... I am meant to finish at 4 today but I swim after work and I can't not go as I'm at Wimby all next week getting no exercise and eating and drinking too much no doubt!
Best of luck today. Andy:thumbup:

Future star maybe !
Kyle is dominant at the moment. Not sure what Andy can do other than hang onto his own serve in the second set and hope for a dip from Kyle.

Kyle fights to get to deuce on Andy's serve. Andy wins a rally to get the adv and shouts "Mon!" at himself. Kyle gets an adv of his own, Andy saves the BP. Kyle is allowed a late challenge and gets us back to deuce. It's a (tennis) dogfight out there!
Deuce again...
mickeypops
27-06-2018, 17:33
... a loose DF from Andy sets up another BP which he saves. Another BP, and Andy DFs again to hand the break. 2-3

I am finding it hard, because he has overtaken AM as British No 1. He is also 24 soon, and has yet to win an ATP singles title.

That's it for Andy I'm afraid as Kyle goes up 2 breaks, obviously Edmund has yet to truly excel in latter stages of events. However is a slam semi finalist (better than 250 for instance) and if a bit behind some still has the potential.
There have been numerous glimpses of Murray magic. Kyle will never be a Murray.

so Kyle takes it in straights and overall it was a great performance from him, he handled the ocassion very well. Disappointing for Andy and had hoped he would at least get a set but still relatively close and we seen some gems from Murray, early in the comeback and just was not quite sharp enough and Edmund put him under pressure at times with serve and movement.

So sad that Andy lost :crying: - wouldn't care to speculate on whether he will play Wimbledon because I don't have all the facts.
Ok so Andy didn't get the win today but Kyle has been the most consistent opponent he has faced yet. And also this is what a comeback is all about, finding out where you are etc. Some very encouraging signs in Andy's game and it's just so good he's back out there. I thought there was some good tennis played today and hey, that was 2 Brits playing! How good is that? I think today showed how very far Kyle has come and well played to him. Good interview too.

Well done to Kyle, he played really well. Andy a bit more fatigued than on Monday I think. It's hard not to be greedy and expect Andy to win again but overall the signs are encouraging. I think he probably shouldn't play Wimbledon but it will be very hard for him to resist

Andy fought really well, but Kyle player better. Andy was a bit hit off the court with power of Kyles' serve and forehand.
Not sure Andy will play Wimbledon. Does he feel he can beat top players yet - I don't know.
Fair play to Kyle - he was the better player. Which is completely understandable given Andy's situation. To be honest I'd have worried about Kyle's game if he hadn't won. Andy will get better and sharper. When/if they play again it may well be a different story. If Andy was to lose today, I'd rather he lost to Kyle than anyone else.

Kyle always likely to be a particularly tricky opponent simply because he's been practising with Andy and therefore has best info on what - at present- is likely to make life tricky for Andy.

27-06-2018, 18:38
Kyle's game has improved so much - and his mental strength - remember DC when he was ahead and then lost it. He's only recently got on top of that. He looks very strong now and has an unpredictable game.
Andy looked more predictable today - maybes it's the opponent. He's not as quick around the court as he was.
Not surprising at the moment. Tough match for them both - the No 1 versus the one we all feel is No 1!
After Monday's match I thought Andy would play Wimbledon. Not so sure though now. But the best way he can get match fit is through playing matches. We've been saying for years he needs to emulate what Federer does to preserve his body - he's got to make preservation his top management strategy now. Whatever that means for him.

He probably shouldn't have played Wimbledon last year and definitely should not have been playing a 5th set in the QF.
However, it is Andy's decision and whichever way it goes we will respect that. To me, whatever the draw, Andy is unlikely to make it to the second week if he decides to play, just hoping people do not expect him to perform miracles!
“Not surprising at the moment. Tough match for them both - the No 1 versus the one we all feel is No 1!”
That’s the point. I resent Kyle for being No 1. It’s completely unfair of me, and I probably should grow up. But there it is. I will treasure the win against Wawrinka. That was a delightful bonus.

Whatever Andy decides is probably not going to give the outcome we all want.....another win. Having said that we are all going to have to accept a few losses and a slow build up to the Andy we all love.

A definite case of tennis (in the from of Kyle) moving on whilst Andy has to sit on the sidelines. Thought Kyle was very focussed today, positive until nerves took over near the end but showed how he's progressed by getting the win. He took charge of the occasion and played exceptionally well. We are lucky to have someone else at such a high level to follow whilst Andy finds his way back. Personally I'd like Andy to keep playing matches even if he doesn't win. If he loses very early he can still practise, if he can win a few then that's positive progress. It would just be very hard if he meets the best players so early in every tournament at this early stage. I'm greedy and want to see him. It's been so good to be reminded of his skilfull shot-making and his competitive fighting spirit.

Just in case anyone like me needs this to see a summary of the match in eleven and a half minutes... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUOR_QGzs-0
I thought Kyle outpowered Andy today and, yes, Andy was not as quick on court. But... Krygios, Wawrinka and Kyle as first three matches back... that is a bit like jumping back in the pool at the deep end. Think how many tournaments Andy went through without having such a difficult draw! Good luck with the comeback Andy! I suspect at some point Andy will get his old game back less some speed and then make a few changes based on the "new" body!
Playing Andy seemed imo to bring out the best in Kyle, and was certainly a demonstration of how his game has improved overall. The loss may have hurt in more ways than one at the time, but I also think Andy will be pleased to see the future of British tennis is in good hands, and know how much Kyle has appreciated his support.

Kyle certainly played very well and earned the win. Andy still a little rusty with serve and his movement was not up to his usual standard. But he's getting there. Whether he feels he's there for Wimbledon is the 64 dollar question. Only he and his team can make that decision. It was a treat to watch two British players do battle and even though I desperately wanted Andy to win must congratulate Kyle as he has improved so much this year. He did say some lovely things about Andy and I'm guessing it was a little emotional for him.
Josephine
28-06-2018, 08:36
Yes - the 64 dollar question
From the Times article
Andy Murray on Wimbledon: "It’s just whether I feel like I’m able to do myself justice. I don’t want to go out there to just play, I want to be able to compete properly. If I don’t feel like I can do that, then I won’t play."
Just finished watching the match on Prime and have to say I feel British men’s tennis is in safe hands with these two. Andy still getting match fitness back, but sparks of the old Andy coming through his game, though I don’t think we have seen the best of post-operation Andy yet. I’m certain we will if he takes his come-back steadily and he seems to be philosophical, thinking intelligently and realistically about what he needs to do. Kyle goes from strength to strength and is developing into a fine mature player. He has a great game and has, without doubt, benefitted from his friendship with Andy. I see a future grand slam winner here! Go Kyle! And welcome back Andy! And what about young Cameron then?? Tennis certainly is exciting with these three, and hopefully Dan doing his talent justice as well. Go guys!
@ JennieF - I think we have some great players coming through. I can’t see Kyle as a Grandslam Winner. He is 24 this year, and has one ATP Final to his credit. He is yet to break his duck. I see him more as a Henman. He might pick up the odd ATP title, but I suspect GS Titles are beyond him.
I have great hopes for Jay Clarke though.
