Defending champion Gabrine Muguruza drawn against Brit Naomi Broady in 1st round ,Watson will play Flipkins 1st round .Konta has Vikhlyantseva which some considering to be fairly tough, Cornet/Cibulkova in 2nd and possibly Metens in 3rd and Halep in 4th should she progress. Tough draw for Harriet Dart as draws 7th seed Pliskova, Gabrielle Taylor has got Bouchard (who qualified) in 1st, Serena in bottom half and first seeds she could play would be Svitolina in the 3rd R, Keys/Rybarikova 4th and possibly Wozniacki in quarters. Two former finalists Kerber and Zvonereva meet 1st R. Great match with kerber and Wozniacki in Eastbourne semis, however Angie lost momentum when she failed to convert mp in 2nd after 24 stroke rally, going down 6-4 in decider. Projected quarters according to seeding (though of course could be upsets) are Halep v kvitova, Muguruza v Garcia, Pliskova v Stephens, and Svitolina v Wozniacki (Serena/venus could well be there) Venus in same section as Pliskova and Stephens. Sharapova in same section as Ostapenko and Kvitova.

Yes great win for Katie, well done! Harriet Dart took 7th Seed Pliskova to decider but went down 6-1 in 3rd. Biggest upset thus far is defeat of 4th seed Sloane Stephens, looked like it might be tricky draw with Donna Vekic but frustrating she only won 4 games.

Big upset as Petra Kvitova knocked out by Sasnovich 6-0 in 3rd who played great match, some picked her for title. Wasn't so sure as despite tour success most slams not great lately, however certainly expected her in 2nd week. Did have hamstring injury earlier forcing withdrawal after 1 match at Eastbourne, anyway disappointing. Katie Boulter now in 3rd set, Gabrielle Taylor earlier lost to Bouchard 6-3 in 3rd.

I was on Ct 2 yesterday so saw the Konta match and the Sharapova match. The latter was very loud - from both players but Sharapova started it. Convinced her opponents often think "if you're gonna screech, so am I".
Witnessed an interesting scene. At start of 3rd set we moved seats as plenty of spare by then so we moved forward. There was a guy at the other end of the row who seemed to be part of Sharapova's team- wearing accreditation and started saying loudly stuff like "keep it low", "stay back". He called her Baby and something like "Mash" or "Masha" which I took to be a pet version of Maria. Shortly after he moved a few rows further forward. By this time he had been spotted by several in the crowd and one guy told the stewards. I was sat on the end of the aisle so saw what happened next. The stewards asked several of us to point out the man and then they watched him. When he next called out to her a steward went to him. Too far from me to hear but the guy made a "what me? I'm not doing anything " expression then shrugged and left. This was at the south end of the court under the commentary box. Few minutes later we spot the man reappear in the players guest seating. Stewards were stood by me discussing and watching. It was clear from their conversation that a message had been given to the umpire to be aware of suspected coaching. A few minutes later I noticed the guy had gone from the players box and didn't see him again. May have gonecompletely or moved somewhere I didn't notice. Anyone watching on TV or not sat in the section I was in would not have known what happened but stewards took it really seriously and had no hesitation in responding to concerns of the crowd that coaching was going on.

Makarova and Wozniacki are being hampered by some sort of flying insects. I remember, when I was a child, my grandparents (my mum's parents) had an apple tree at the bottom of their garden. Whenever it had been a hot and sunny day, the same flying insects would appear near the tree in the early evening. So, nobody went out into the garden at that time.

JAMES4578
04-07-2018, 17:49
Another upset as 2nd seed Wozniacki went out to Makarova 7-5 in 3rd,though the one slam where Caroline never past last 16 and Ekaterina had some good wins on grass. Mind you looked like she might throw it away as was up 5-1 but finally won it on 6th match point.

Ekaterina Makarova is the first women into the quarters, beating Lucie Safarova.

Last 16, Evgeniya Rodina has just joined her putting out 10th seed Madison Keys 6-4 in the 3rd.

That was exciting - despite some rather lacklustre tennis. Injured qualifier beats 10th seed. Go Rodina! Hopefully her back/leg will be better with the extra day off.

JAMES4578
06-07-2018, 13:02
Only really watched fist 2 sets but kept eye on it , Keys looked the more likely winner after she somehow turned the 2nd around, Rodina done well but not great for Madison ! Faces Serena next though who came through two tight sets against Mladenovic. However Venus out to Bertens 8-6 in 3rd, Kiki originally served for match in 2nd.

JAMES4578
07-07-2018, 15:19
The upsets continue as top seed Simona Halep goes out to Su Wei Hsieh 7-5 in the 3rd, despite having a 5-2 lead. Of the top ten only Pliskova still in contention. Serena's chances seem to be increasing by the day.

Bizarre situation with only 7 women's seeds remaining going into week 2. I had a fantastic day at Wimbledon last Tuesday. Sorry this is a bit late and behind the times, but I am only managing to get on here now between one thing and another. Saw Muguruza play Naomi Broady. Was impressed how hard Naomi made Gaby work in set 2. Also saw Halep...she was very good on Tues. My fav match was watching young Katy Dunne play Ostapenko. Katy took her to a TB in the second set and I was so impressed with Katy. I really took her to my heart, she has such an endearing personality and I love her attitude. Will be keeping an eye on her progress. My only regret last Tues was not being able to meet up with other forummers, though I did manage to catch up with lovetennis which was great. It was SO hot, I had to take frequent breaks from the court to lower the body temperature. Wish I were still there. Loved the match yesterday between Halep and Hsieh, such compelling viewing. Though Hsieh is very entertaining and also very endearing, I thought the tournament needed Simona to stay in. But wide open now, so what will happen?.....

Bencic had chance to serve for 2nd but broken back and Kerber the highest remaining seed took the breaker,Kasatkina has early break in decider at 3-1. Pliskova came back from set and a break to win 3rd R but could there was no repeat, fought back from break down in 2nd but Bertens easily won TB.

I agree :cauldron: :smashed:

I do not remember such a fuss being made when Kim Clijsters won the US title as a working mum.

As a curly-haired 18-month-old toddler, Jada melted hearts as she ran around on Arthur Ashe Stadium in September 2009 but her presence also celebrated the fact that Clijsters had just become the first mother to win a Grand Slam title since 1980.

Clijsters went on to lift two more major trophies and she remains the only mother to have claimed any of the four slams over the past 38 years.

Seems like great play from Giorgi but likely Serena will step up, was watching more of Bertens/Georges. Serena has break in 2nd up 4-2 ,Georges did have break but Bertens back on serve at 3-4.

Good effort from Girogi but Serena too strong in the end taking decider 6-4. Georges broke again at end of 2nd and ran with 3rd 6-1.

JAMES4578

Angelique Kerber first in final with 6-3,6-3 win but Ostapenko disappointing as her game became ragged (particularly in 2nd) , a lot of power but could not get right balance and the German's defence was strong. Got something going at end and even had bp for 4-5 from 1-5 but was not enough.

Serena through pretty comfortably 6-2, 6-4 and Georges had almost double no winners/unforced errors. Julia broke back at 5-3 with great pass but then wasn't great service game though Williams stepped it up. Whilst would like to see kerber take it will be tough if Serena near top form. Has great defence but will need to attack more. Whilst before tournament wasn't sure if Serena would be fit enough/in best off form certainly see her as favourite.
