http://www.protennislive.com/posting/2018/422/mds.pdf the draw - Andy gets Pouille in the first round

And possibly Federer in the 3rd round if he were to get that far.

Fairly tough draw but then going to be at a Masters, in the past Andy tended not to have too much trouble with Pouille but different circumstances now. Still all being well hopefully will get another few wins under his belt.
ATP site have spelled out the details (https://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/cincinnati-2018-draw-preview)
talk about a jinx! someone ride to Andy's rescue NOW!
That’s a bit XXXX. Poor lad. On the whole I would prefer him to avoid a match up with Federer at this stage, so if he goes out I won’t be weeping.

He is bound to come across top players in first few rounds. Could have been worse. I'm certainly not hoping he goes out before 3rd round. Do I expect him to beat Fed if they both get there - frankly no - but better than losing in 1st round!

Reckon Andy would be pretty happy to get a couple wins under his belt then a match up v Federer to see where he's at against the big guns.
Yes, two wins then a reasonable performance against Fed would be good at this stage.

That was exactly my first thought too Clare. I think Andy would quite like the opportunity to face the likes of Fed to guage his fitness. match play, everything. However, both have gotta get there first! A loss to Fed at this stage would be no big deal IMO. And who's to say he would lose anyway!

Are you kidding me?!! Are you seriously hoping Andy gets beat just because you don't want him to play fed....that's just weird lol

No I just want him to play sensibly. I don’t think being thrashed by Federer would do his confidence any good. It’s about building himself up mentally as well as physically at this stage. I think a Masters 1000 is too soon for him. I would rather he played 250’s or Challengers at this stage to build up match fitness.
I am weird..........!!!

Well he played a 500 and had to withdraw exhausted! Then he was sensible and withdrew from Toronto. I don't think there are any easy matches. I think he has to face a few losses and then get back his form. Just as Novak did and Stan too. Stan played great against Rafa even though he lost.
Andy has ambitions to get back to the top - and he needs to get his ranking up so he can get direct entry to tournaments.
I think playing Federer, Andy would know where his game is at and what he would need to do in the future.

Rafa is out of Cincy per his Twitter account @RafaelNadal (https://twitter.com/RafaelNadal) 7h (https://twitter.com/RafaelNadal/status/1028806348979494914)
I am very sorry to announce that I won’t be playing in Cincinnati this year. No other reason than personally taking care of my body and trying to keep as healthy as I feel now. I am very thankful to my friend Andre Silva, Tournament Director of the Cincinnati tournament, who after speaking to him on the phone understood what I said and understand the situation. I am sure the tournament will be a success and I wish him and his team all the best.I am also sad for those amazing fans in Cincy and around who always gave me great support.
I fully expected that if he got to the latter stages of Toronto he would withdraw from Cinci. The older players like Rafa, Fed and Andy don't want to take risks by overplaying before USO.

Good luck this evening, Andy. Definitely hoping for a match up with Fed - agree with those who say it would provide Andy with insight into where his level sits. Can't hide from challenges in life (and Andy never does).
All the best of luck today, Andy.

Malek Jaziri as LL takes Rafa's place in the draw.
That. to me, is what was wrong with Rafa's withdrawal, it should have come much sooner.
Well the nerves are already starting..........

He couldn't withdraw before playing the Toronto final as it would give confidence to his opponent. The problem is with tournaments now scheduling one or two main draw matches on the Sunday. If they went back to starting on the Monday, the problem wouldn't occur.
oop for Tuesday - https://www.atpworldtour.com/en/scores/current/cincinnati/422/daily-schedule
Kyle on not before 1.30 am UK time.
Looking forward to Tsitipas and Goffin in about a couple of hours time. I wonder can Stefanos adapt quickly to change of court speed etc after his great run in Toronto.
Goffin takes the first (close) set. He looks so different under his baseball cap!
Daveed wins! Stefanos looked exhausted- unsuprisingly. Not an exciting match but interesting.

To be expected really, Stefanos had some chances but could not capitalise, break in 2nd did not last long. However hopefully Goffin can progress further ! Pouille went out to Mayer 7-6,6-4 and Kygrios through in final set breaker with Kudla.
Goffin seems to be beefing up his serve, aces evident; Nick Kyrios beat Denis Kudla with a constant stream of aces, unreturnables and dfs - NK basically couldn't move and his right knee was heavily strapped.
Wow! Some impressive play from Haase to beat Sascha in 3! Sascha will not be a happy camper.

Sacha failing to deliver though strong play from Hasse to take 3rd 7-5, looked as if Zverev might prevail when he broke back.
oop for Wednesday - https://www.atpworldtour.com/en/scores/current/cincinnati/422/daily-schedule
And just to cap off a miserable day, there is no live tennis to watch as the rain continues to pour in miserable Cinci!
(Ah, just remembered. Dan is playing. I'll watch him! That's better.)

Quite a good contest between Djokovic and Cilic but Nole took decider 6-3 to reach final , Fed just taken first from Goffin on breaker and unfortunately David retires at 1 all in 2nd. Did have some shoulder trouble.

Surprised myself by finding I want Djokovic to win this final. Made my mind up when the players walked on court with the child mascots. Djoko chatted to his mascot allowing the boy to enjoy his special moment walking onto court and gave him a friendly pat on the head as they parted company. Fed strutted on holding his mascot's hand, never spoke a word to her while he acknowledged the crowd and just let go of her hand at the net without so much as goodbye.

Enjoying the final. Novak takes first set 6-4, playing really well and seems back to his best. I'd be really happy for him to win tonight and complete his masters set. So funny seeing Fed get obscenity warning - first time I've ever seen that.

Yes that obscenity warning made me chuckle - bit disappointed I didn't hear the obscenity:big grin:
Fed breaks early in the 2nd set

Djokovic was in better form, however a few errors and down 2-0 in the 2nd-more than anything just want it to be an entertaining contest. Nole may have a few points in his favour compared to Fed but had his moments in some of the other matches. Roger though could not take advantage, broken twice and Djokovic back in ascendancy at 4-3.

:confused:I'm trying to decide who I want to win. It's not easy. Is it a fun thing that Novak could be the first winner of all Masters 1000s or is it completely annoying? It was fun seeing Roger get an obscenity warning though.
Going for Novak as I think he's going to do it so I'd be right at least Also Roger looking like a grumpy old man. :)

He's now got the full set = all the Masters and Slams.
(but not an Olympic Gold Medal ...)

Too true. Novak is good with his mascots - I've noticed before. He's also kind when he loses. He's accomplished something unique today yet Federer didn't manage much of a congratulations.

Not quite the match I was hoping for but Djokovic in the zone for match of the match and a deserving winner, fed though was a bit below par. Certainly great to be the first player to take all the Masters!
I'm a bit late to the party here, but I had to watch the replay (someone dropped by just as the match was starting!) and I watched it as a neutral. It wasn't exciting, but it was really interesting. I enjoyed watching it purely for the tennis and to see the tactics and strategies they employed. It was also interesting to note that when really challenged, Fed was not as invincible. Congrats to Nole for being the first player to win all 9 ATP Masters tournaments. And what about Fed's line in his speech "He's the champ", and a little aside, "for today." In other words, *Enjoy this one today buddy cos I'll make darned sure it won't happen again.*

I didn't stay tuned for the trophy presentation- sounds like Fed was up to his usual tricks  . I agree that Djokovic is always very gracious in defeat, but Fed...not so much.
Fab achievement by Djokovic

I've been so tired recently, I fell asleep and missed the end. Congrats to Novak, I'm happy for him. I agree with the comments - I know he can come across as a real dork, but he is genuinely lovely and generous to a fault with children, how he has changed things in Serbia is staggering so I can forgive the dorkery. I love and respect Fed's play but it's a shame he couldn't muster some congratulations for Novak (must admit that personality-wise I've never been particularly drawn to the Swiss that I've met).

He did congratulate Novak quite appropriately at the start of his speech. Yes I did notice the 'for today' later on as well! But he did say all the right things as well. And later in the press conference:
'In press, Federer acknowledged he played poorly but didn't want to dwell on that today: "Novak, he's a great champion and this is what this should be about, this press conference: not about me missing second-serve returns; it's about him making history. That's my opinion." '
I was supporting Novak too so not out to defend Fed just give a bit of balance.
Yes Josephine, you beat me to it! I was also going to clarify that #1 point in Fed's speech was to congratulate Novak on making history, he should be proud and well done. The 'for today' aside came later. The rest of his speech was thanking his team, the fans, the tournament organisers and even for the sunshine which was 'a treat'. And, fasten your seatbelts, he hoped to see everyone next year! Well actually, good on him if he does. He will be 38 then.

Ah - I didn't see it - thanks for the clarifications.
I also noticed the quip "for today" & just started to  and thought that's b***dy typical of Fed, he is not going to change, as Anna said sublime tennis & great to watch & he does deserve all he has achieved, so I just let things like that go over my head, but glad Pat noticed it, thought it was just me!:)
Picked it out immediately Lynne! It was quite glaring! (I thought.)

Does anyone know how many Masters titles Andy, Federer and Rafa have won ? Are they a long way behind Novak

I have to agree Pat, but I just couldn't help but laugh, maybe the shock of him saying it & that was just my reaction!

Actually Nadal is in the lead with 33 Masters titles, Novak now just behind with 31 whilst Federer fairly close with 27. Andy has still done pretty well with 14. http://www.ultimatetennisstatistics.com/record?recordId=MastersTitles
An amazing achievement - well done, Novak. He doesn't have an Olympic gold medal though! I think Andy just needs Indian Wells, Monte Carlo, the Oz Open and the French and he will have the whole set - there's still time.
