View Full Version : Washington 2018 QF: Andy withdraws, de Minaur wins by Walkover
Andy vs de Minaur.
Last match of the evening, second match not before midnight UK time (7.00 pm local time).
de Minaur played 2 matches yesterday, so hopefully he will be tired too.

I know they can't control the weather but surely their scheduling, or maybe playing numbers, has to be looked at
According to the BBC, Andy might not play his match. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/45055266

Who could blame him for pulling out. I sort of hope he doesn't but he has the rest of the year of recovery to get through which means a lot more
If the weather forecast is bad again which I believe it is, they may not get to play today at all ... then again after last night's debacle who knows? Either way I very much doubt I will get to see this as I'm travelling up to Glasgow first thing tomorrow morning and have to be up and doing early and then it will be late night on Saturday so I don't want to be half dead.
Of course Andy may not play at all ... would serve the tournament right! But such a shame for Andy for whom pulling out with exhaustion would go against every sinew in his body!

Not wishing to be unpleasant....but I hope it pours and pours all evening and night

According to the hourly weather app.... it is!!
Has anyone heard get whether or not Andy is going to play?
He is still on the schedule, and the good news is there is lots of rain forecast.

Not seen anything else posted on Twitter or other media but this is what
Kevin Mitchell has just tweeted ... is it so? Or just his speculation/incorrect?

@andy_murray (https://twitter.com/andy_murray) right to pull out of Washington after appalling scheduling this week and three fighting back-to-back late-night wins. Not going to Rogers Cup, and will warm up for #USOpen (https://twitter.com/hashtag/USOpen?src=hash) in #CincyTennis (https://twitter.com/hashtag/CincyTennis?src=hash) "I need to be smart with my rest and recovery as I come back from injury"
Just announced on Tennis Channel here that he has withdrawn from this tournament.

Andy Murray has withdrawn from the #CitiOpen (https://twitter.com/hashtag/CitiOpen?src=hash), but his performance this week made us appreciate again what’s most important about him: His raw dedication to his profession.

Yes it's on the tournament livescore now. It's a shame but totally understandable

Whilst pity obviously Andy felt he had not sufficiently recovered, got to think of bigger picture.
Good decision I think! As James says you have to look at the bigger picture!!

:crying::crying:Yes but I'm sad
Sad to read that Andy has withdrawn but looking at the bigger picture Andy has made the right decision. He was clearly exhausted towards the end of that match against Copil.
I wonder if Andy's decision would have been the same had he and Copil not been expected to play until 3 am in the morning.
:crying: :crying:
Och well, nothing to cry about! :pirate:

I would say definitely a good decision given that the second QF is not yet finished - maybe back on court soon after a long rain delay and tomorrow is SF day.

Just hope that this hasn't caused any problems with his hip.
Shame he can't continue but for the best.
Just woke up to the sad news but completely understandable. Realised how much I have missed seeing him play. x

Completely agree. The scheduling was ridiculous. Starting a match at 01:00 on the morning, was a joke. Just really hope it hasn’t impacted on his recovery.

Sad, but sure it's for the best. Having the excitement of watching him again this week reminded me how much I have missed him . One day We will have to accept the inevitable , I suppose, but I think this decision is the right one to prolong his recovery and give him a few more years.
Looking forward to Cincinatti

Shame for Andy to be forced out but agree it's for the best. Saw marked improvement match-to-match and glimpses of the level he can reach again, so will focus on these important positives. Every reason for Andy (and us) to feel very bright about the future and sure he will after initial frustation passes.
well, my first thought was 'what a wuzz!' but Andy's had a good run, and as RosieBear says there has been improvement in each match. lots to work on with his team, but the desire is there and the fight, the strength will come, the strategic brain is evident, but not yet the execution of the winners. he needs more match play, so the US Open may be too soon, but he's back, and he'll be back to his earlier ranking before long.

Andy knew from the moment he completed that match that he couldn't continue in the tournament - he said immediately afterwards he possible wouldn't play. He gave everything hence the tears - but was he worried by the effect the matches were having on his body? As in can his body cope with the strain. Hope so but withdrawing from 2 tournies a bit worrying.
I'm not sad at all, just relieved Andy made the right decision with regard to protecting his body. And we've all been treated to the most marvellous three matches this week. What a bonus! What would we have given a few months ago for matches like that!! Like Anna I am very optimistic for the weeks ahead and like Andy, for 2019 going forward. This week has put a spring in my step.

It's just one of those that nhs we may need to get used to as he navigates competing with his body.
He is such a battler but he does need to adjust his game so he can be as aggressive as possible to minimise the strain on his body and reduce the length of these mega matches.
But he and Jamie will be well aware of that. And this experience will give them lots of information about what they need to do.
Just wondering how Kyle feels about Andy’s withdrawal. ;)

Why? It's not as if Andy beat Kyle, and then withdrew.

Just thinking if Andy had withdrawn before his match with Kyle, he (K) might have gone further in the tournament. As his friend though, I’m sure Kyle is gutted for Andy. I was just musing......;)

But he had no need to at that point. It was three successive long matches, the last at crazy o'clock, that created the need to pull out. I'm sure had he won the last match in a routine 2 set 90 minute match he wd have played the qf.
( just back from my hols, been relying on updates from my brother so maybe I'm not seeing the full picture )
