phew Andy avoids the bagel.
Only just... Nothing on the second serve at all and he's had to hit too many. 6-1.

Could easily have been bagel, bread stick not much better! Serve real liabilty at moment, however hopefully start of 2nd a bit different-needs more first serves though! Hit a few good shots but needs far more of them, hopefully not too much of a physical problem.

Looking better now from Andy- this is a kind of weird match though. He's not touching his back any more and seems to be moving ok so hopefully it was just a bit or rustiness in the first set. He's made slow starts before of course
I tried it and found I was back in the second set. It then stopped working and the one from Hawkeye doesn't work for me.

Pouille holds to go 3-1 up in the 3rd set.
I was thinking that grandstand wouldn't be the court that Andy would normally play on? So perhaps it has taken him the first set to settle in and adjust to? Think he's more comfortable now so hope he breaks back soon. And it's a bit quieter!
*4-3 Pouille. Like to see Andy break this time!

Match play practice needed for Muzz methinks.

He got to the quarters in Washington, but couldn't get past the first round in this one. I believed he should have played better. Maybe, he shouldn't have given up at the Washington Open.

Still not got the full range of movement & the second serve a liability at times. Hope Andy ok & can find some answers soon.
very noisy wasn't it, scores and music
Sad to see a short and not sweet Cincinatti tournament for Andy. Can't see how he's going to cope with a slam.
All part of the trials of a comeback. It'll all come together in due course. As someone has already said, patience required....more from us than Andy! I'm sure he's prepared for these ups and downs.
JAMES4578
13-08-2018, 19:07
oh well not to be, whilst some impressive play from Andy could not find the consistency required in the 3rd and after a lull Pouille impressed with power hitting and the odd touch to gain the upper hand. Still disappointing and better start might have made difference, mind you some positive signs even if spirit maybe was not quite the same.
Pouille is a streaky player, and he got lucky on net cords in set 1, he made outrageous winners in the back hand duels, and when he got the chance to use his fore hand it was devastating. tough for Andy to meet a player with such an unusual game so early in this tourny, but on to the next show. one loss, nothing to write home about.
The humidity was clearly very high. His shirt was soaking. Given he's not had his usual training block in Miami, that may have affected him more than normally.
Sad, but it was quite close. He obviously needs practice on the court. Didn’t I read somewhere that he has got to modify his serve, to allow for the hip. It will take a while. I still think he needs to practice with easier players to build his confidence up, and get the match practice.

13-08-2018, 19:13
So so disappointing...the consistency just not there - yet ! Some of the instinct is showing but at times I think he is thinking about it too much.
I honestly think he needs to play a couple of challengers - matches against lesser players to boost his confidence and get the whole game working again - I dont see how he'll manage in a slam at the moment - he just isnt where he wants to be and he could be so dispirited
Its a long hill to climb for Andy....but on the bright side both Rafa and Djoko have done it - patience and practice. He'll get there
When Djokovic came back, wasn’t he going out in the first or second rounds initially?
just so hard to see Andy a shadow of his former self :(
really hoping lots of match play can bring him back somewhere close to where he was

Sad to see Andy go out like that today; wonder if he will take a wild card into Winston Salem next week. Needs more match practice.
I hate it when he loses, and always feel a bit down, but this is only his 5 match since being out for a year.
He lost to Kyrgios in 3 sets in Queens
Beat Wawrinka, then lost to Edmund in Eastbourne
Beat McDonald , Edmund and Copil in Washington (and if it hadn’t been for Asterisk scheduling he might well have beaten De Minaur as well).
He has just lost to the world No 17 in 3 close sets.
It’s going to take time. He is obviously as rusty as hell. Hopefully it will come with time.
I know he is a super fit athlete and all that, but it took me ages to learn to trust my hip again, after it had been fiddled with. Doesn’t it also take 12 months to fully recover from a General anaesthetic?

Yep there were definitely shouts of "come on" from Andy - though it was hard to hear them with the distracting music soundtrack and announcements from the main court. I don't necessarily expect the cathedral-like atmosphere of Wimbledon at every tournament but it really was a bit ridiculous on Grandstand Court today. I know it's the same for both players but it really doesn't make for the best playing environment. Sort it out Cincy
Def were fist pumps and come ons. It gladdens my heart to hear the big roars. As I said earlier this is all.part of the ups and downs of a comeback. I'm not feeling sad or down like I would have been before he got injured. Like Angie, I am loving him being back out there.
lovetennis
13-08-2018, 21:17
Definitely right to expect ups and downs. At this point in his comeback I find myself looking more at how Andy is moving rather than how he is playing. If his movement and fitness is improving then he will play himself in over time. Today he seemed to struggle a little in the 1st set but then got going, and then moved pretty well with little sign of the limp. I wonder if he has some stiffness at the start of matches, which hopefully will improve as he gets more match practice.
I do think he needs to play Winston-Salem or a challenger to get some matches. Such a shame his body wasn't quite ready for the Loughborough & Glasgow Challengers pre-Wimbledon, which I suspect was the hoped-for plan
Thanks to everyone for the match reports. I was unable to watch the match today or record it. So I appreciate reading the comments here. Hope Andy is Ok and just needs match practice.

Yes a very rusty looking Andy - his movement and timing need work.
And that second serve especially!
The different surfaces of each tournament seem to vary so much that when he gets a run in one tournament it's still really such a different experience for him in the next. Patience for him and us and hopefully it'll all click like it has for Djokovic.

Think he wd be wary of having a Washington type run then having nothing in tank for New York.
There were lots of positives to take from the match last night but the most encouraging, I thought, was that Andy seemed to be moving much more freely than he was in Washington.

Step back:
Top player coming back from injury/operation clearly shows signs of not being fully recovered, takes world ranked no. 17 to 6-4 in the third set.
Yes, all about the bigger picture of Andy and his body getting back together again!
